on a sample assessment of $23.800; Pickering. 1.14 per cent.
or $20 based on an assessment of $26.900: Uxbridge, .54
per cert. or $IO based on an assessment of $4,500; Brock,
2.61 per cent, or $33 based on an assessment of $8,000: Scu-
gog; t 27 per cent, or $19 based on an assessment of $3.800.
Oshawa gets an estimated decrease of .95 per cent, or $10
less on a sample assessment of 58,000. Whitby gets a
decrease of .23 per tent, or $4 less on an assessment of
$6,000.
These figures are board estimates only. Actual increases
will come from individual municipalities.

starting in September,
The Durham Board of F,ducanon and the
Durham Region Roman C'athullc Separate
School Board have developed a
common school Year calendar that
co-ordinates as many instructional
and prtlesstonal development days

Some people just don't get it.

tax increases
To the editor:
I am sure that thrwNarkls of txtrteowners are
fed up with .school tax incroNiscs. People work all
their lives to keep a rxif over their heads and
food on the table and when they retire aid have
to meet the household bills each month and pay
more in property taxes each year, they have very
little to look forward to.
Our taxes in Picketing are higher then the city
Of Toronto. The sooner Mike Harris gets his bills
Passed the better for all louse owners.
I don't know how seniors on their oven are
managing it all. 1 pay $3,610.114 for a small one -
storey house, $1,900 of that in school taxes.
i didn't vote for Mike Harris, but next time he
will get the vote of my entire family. He is the
only politician who is doing what he promised
he would do.
Get lid of some of the so" bureaucracy
and get somebody who can manage the taxpay-

In this day of computer%. immediate infor-
mation would make it very caw to have the

tx,m at the time of the completed require-
mentN and curse,.
The delayed graduation seems anti-clr
mactic even compared to Grade N gradua-
tions. After students have already gone away
to college or univcrshics, it seems absurd fur
them to have hi travel hack to their high
schoxrl when they have already moved on
from that part of their lives. Since our daugh-
ter was unable to afford to return — troth in
terms of time away from courses as well as
the money for travel — we all felt cheated of
this important celebration. The rest of the
family attended the graduation to support
other students and to report back to our
daughter about -'her” graduation. We were
sad to find that if you fail to attend, then they
don't even read out your name.
Deficiencies of graduation ceremonies
include the deletion of caps, gowns and other
pageantry, which only reinforces to our
young people the lack of importance of their
excellence in high school education. Every
graduate should feel excited about their grad-
uation and rewarded for their efforts with
memories to last a lifetime.
We should do everything we can to
encourage young people to complete their
education including giving them the standing
ovation they deserve, and not at a delayed
time.
Let's do more than complain and be disap-
pointed, as parents make sure the needed

Poets speak with their inner voice

It was poetic justice.
The inspired work of a few Durham -
area poets was judged impartially, and
then nghtfully recognized at a breakfast
awards ceremony recently In Whitby
The annual awards event, put
together by the Writers' Circle of
Durham Region (WCDR ), goes by the
name: The Dan Sullivan Memorial
Poetry Contest.
Who was Dan Sullivan, you ask.'
The question was answered by Mar-
jorie Green, president of the Writers
Circle, in her introductory speech Sat-
urday morning. Sullivan, she said.
"kept us amused with his Poetry - he
was a very gored poet,"
He also had a very ghortous, even
poetic, ending, and it was tamed out
with impeccable timing His very last
act on this earth was a poetry reaidmg.

counting.
In his turn at the mike. Steven laird
IMC for the morning ceremony, and
director of poetry and songwnung fir
WCDRI described. rather lyrically, the
process of writing a poem: "Poems get
started in all kinds of way, - sonic
phrase rattles aruund in your head, or
something you see or feel moves you to
write it down... then the hard work
comes, giving it shape and sound on
paper'. he said.
"Finally you think n', done. Fxcept
it's not dune. not until you breathe n out
in your town voice to hear. Because
poetry is a special kind of language.

He went on to dcx'nhe Petry as

But in the end, he said, they didn t
have to make such a judgment. In,tead

moved us - made us want to laugh or
cry. enchanted us ... or made us think
more deeply about something we all
take for granted"
There were three categories in the
contest. adult, youth and children Each
category included first. second and
third prize, and various runners-up
First prize in the adult category was
Julia Swiggum of Whithv for her P,cm.
'Shoiting the Breeze.'
In the youth categury (ages I VI X)
first prize went to Lindsay Spi mann
of Por Perry fur her poi rn. 'A Stalker's
First Love.'
In the children's category, Sarah
Scutt of Oshawa won fiat prize for her
Poem 'Sister Spirit.'
