Although the bandit got away, netting $2(X). Sgt. Grimley said the robbery and hostage -taking could have ended with lar worse results. The councillor describes the final closure as "a great day for Pickering" and notes it came after many years of community effort to have the issue finally resolved. Andrew Heit, Metro site engineer for Brock West, says co-operation and quick approvals by all parties involved — the provincial Ministry of the Environment, Metro and Pickering — led to the quick closure. The deadline set in the out-of-court settlement had been April 30, 1998. "It would have delayed the capping of Brock West for another year," says Mr. Heit. Capping the site now, he explains, means there will be less water flowing through the waste and therefore less leachate coming out of it, and allows for better containment of the gases produced by the landfill. "It was in everybody's interest to do it more quickly" The transfer from Brock North apparently went off without a hitch, after problems with odors and hazardous waste had been anticipat- ed by some. The move was monitored by the Town's health and safety co-ordinator. "As far as waste goes it was not very odor- ous at all;" says Mr. Heit. "We didn't find any surprises in there. did not have to remove Father Goose and the roosters any hazardous wasteto at all. There was nothing we came across." LiS 2H5 • Publisher: Tim Whittaker ♦ Editorial Getting public info like pulling teeth The idea seemed simple enough: Collect data on Durham Region's three sitting Liberal MPs, put it together and let constituents draw their own conclu- sions. The three MPs — Ontario Riding's Dan McTeague. Oshawa Riding's Ivan Grose. and Durham Riding's Alex Shepherd — were sent to Ottawa in the Liberal tide that swept through Ontario in 1993 and have, in vary ing degrees no doubt, served their constituents ever since. Imagine our surprise when, atter nearly seven weeks. we were still pleading for perfectly public information from local and parliamentary offices. What we wanted: Voting records of Durham Region's 'MIPs in the House of Commons. the number of private members' bills the,. have introduced in this term of office. the number of times they've voted against parte bills; and certain constituency expenses charged to the taxpayer. That information. we believed, would provide a glimpse into the parliamentary life of your ;t1P and per- haps stir interest in the federal election expected in June. But the frustrating lack of co-ordination by parlia- mentary offices in Ottawa, the reluctance in some instances to provide what should be readily obtainable data, and the general surliness of toxo many bureaucrats turned the effort into an ordeal. Calls to various Parliamentary records offices brought the news information wasn't kept by them in all those areas. and their computers were down indefinite- ly so they couldn't provide even the information they usually kept. A helpful assistant to one of the MPs provided infor- mation on the private member's bills. But the Liberal Whip's office was unwilling to part with the voting record information, only to provide it to each MP's office which might in turn provide it to the News Advertiser. Only travel expenses were available from the Comptroller's office, because information on indi- vidual office and other expenses were not compiled until this past fiscal year and that won't be available until June — if there's no election before then and if it's released after being tabled in the Commons. Overall, getting what should be public facts about public representatives was an unpleasant and ridicu- lously complicated process for a member of the com- munity press. Imagine what it would be like for an elderly person, an unemployed father of two or a grad- uating college student with fewer contacts and less experience in dealing with government. The idea seemed simple enough. The task was not. It does grave injury to the dignity of its partici- pantz, since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit fitr oth- crn. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offence.' I may also point out that these adult movies and video depict adultery, ti>mi- cation and sodomy, all of which are intrinsic evils, described by Mr. Nadeau as the sex is nicely crafted" There are no moral norms which exclude intrinsically evil acts, there are no privileges or excep- tions for anyone. "Ihe first precept of moral law is .that goxid is to be- done and pursued, and evil is to be avoided" Upom this precept are hased all other precepts of the natural and moral. And for Mr. Robert Paterson's enlightenment, absolute moral norms are not related to the contingent social and historical realities — the flawed propositions of "teleologism" and "proponionalism" notwithstanding! I heartily commend Susan Sheller and the members of the Durham organization People Against Pornography. I whole- heartedly support their objectives as we do not need nor do we want adult movie stores in Durham. I didn't know decisions were there to be taken — like money from taxpayer~' pockets. I thought decisions had to be made. And how about people who say "as far as whatever" and then never complete it with the "is concerned" so that the listen- cr is left hanging — as in "as far as a 5(XI- per cent tax hike I think it's a great idea". Oh -oh, I think I'm beginning to rant. But if you want to make me feel better about this mania by letting me know oth- crs share it, send me a mote about sloppy language habits that grate on your nerves. I'll include some in a future column, along with the list somebody will undoubtedly provide of the errors I made in this one. Marianne Takacs writes in our Tuesday rotation of staff columnists. PAGE S - THE NEWS ADVERTISER TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 197 YourBusine ss March a roaring month for auto industryin Durham BY JOE DUARTE SPECIAL TO THE NEWS ADVERTISER March went out like a lion in Durham, and the region's automotive citizens roared to increases in passenger car and light truck sales. Heading the pride was General Motors of Canada, which delivered a total of 39,973 new vehicles in March, a jump of 21.9 per cent from the 32,805 units deliv- ered in the same month last year. Car sales accounted for 22.486 of that total. an increase of 2 1.6 per cent compared to March of last year, while truck units were up 22.1 per cent to 17,487 units. Over the first quarter of 1997, GM has delivered 94,780 vehicles (53,703 cars and 41,077 trucks) for an increase of 7.5 per cent over the same period last year. Trucks accounted for a 9.9 -per cent increase, and cars for a jump of 5.8. Leading the way for GM, and the Canadian market in general. were the Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire. The compact cars (coupes, sedans and convertibles) currently sit one and two, respectively, atop the passenger car sales charts in Canada with year-to-date (YTD) totals of 11,348 and 10,350. That represents an increase of 19.8 per cent over the first quarter of last year for Cavalier (Canada's top selling car for the past seven years), while Sunfire sales surged ahead 29.9 per cent. Those totals combined to propel GM's 1 -cars to the top of the selling platform title in Canada, leap -frogging — Chrysler's Minivan family. GM's YTD share of the overall market stands at 32.5 per cent, up slightly from its year-end share of 32.3. Meanwhile. Cars running in extreme climates — very hot or very cold — and those driven with "a lot of stop and go", will need oil changes more frequently than others. How do you tell if the oil is dirty? "Even experts have a difficult time with this question. Depending on how frequently the oil has been changed will determine how quickly the oil "appears' to be 'dark' on the dipstick. The Car Doctor recommends keeping with a careful record of how many miles, or how long between oil changes, and stick to a strict maintenance schedule." The oil filter should also he changed every time you charge the oil. The oil filter removes micro fine particles from the oil that can act as an abrasive to critical moving engine parts. If the filter is not changed regularly and becomes restricted, then something called a "bypass valve" in the filter will allow dirty oil to recirculate through the engine. Obviously, this is not a good prescription for your patient. Ounce of Prevention Two other filters that require occasional changing are the air filter and the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) filter. Some vehicles may have only one of these filters, usually the air filter, and visual inspection is oftentimes difficult on modern vehicles. For these modern vehicles, the Car Doctor recommends having the filters inspected by a qualified service facility every other oil change. In older vehicles that use carburation, the air filter is usually easy to remove. A wing nut secures the top of the air cleaner. Simply remove it and the cover to inspect the air and crankcase filters. To inspect belts and hoses, simply look at them. If the belts appear to be cracked or worn, it's time to replace them. Through inspection, drivers can eliminate costly repairs resulting from their failure on the highway. Hoses need replacing when they're beginning to bulge or leak. Finally, when and why should a car be brought in for a tune-up? Say Burrows, "A tune-up or tune-up analysis should be performed annually or when one of two things occurs: a decrease in gas mileage or when a car begins to run rough." Burrows points out however, that in many instances, a rough running p1,priS COs o _ ` ALTO • RUST PROOFING • AUOGLASS (WE PAY MOST DEDUCTIBLES) I • AUTO & MARINE UPHOLSTERY • HIGH SPEED BUFFING & POLISH • ACCESSORIES (running boards, t spoilers & more) . With fuel injection and computerized systems, a simple tune-up may NOT be the answer. Burrows recommends careful communication with the service facility to understand the exact needs of your vehicle. Customers who adhere to this schedule get a lot better efficiency from their engines." To get that efficiency, car owners should expect their auto care centers to provide the following: • replacement of all spark plugs (just one had plug in a four-cyclinder engine reduces power by 25 per cent and uses 25 per cent more gas; misfiring or fouled plugs can waste hundreds of dollars in fuel): • an inspection of the condition of the distributor cap, rotor, high-tension (ie., spark plug) wires, PCV and emission systems; • a tailpipe emissions analysis. If an oil change isn't performed with the tune-up, Burrows suggests doing the oil change first. Dirty oil can affect the emission readings.
