"This council has no

our report, she added. "It's
not within the purview of
this council to approve or
reject a motion of any mem-

Oshawa is only "express-
ing its feeling" to the
Province, the prerogative of
every community, she noted.
The City's report is "our
opinion to Milt Farrow. Stop
looking for bogeymen under

Brian Nicholson said.
"We have the local tier,
the regional tier and now
we're going to have a Toron-

"Ask vour constituents

Oshawa Councillor Jim

the city helped build
Durham.
"We brought you running

Coun. Potticary said.

Durham school support staff staging protest against Tories
Support staff at Durham public
and separate schools will stage a
10 -minute protest at noon Monday
against provincial education
reforms.
School secretaries, educational
assistants, custodians and mainte-

staff will protest in front of the
schools and the headquarters of
Durham Region Roman Catholic
Separate School Board on Ross -
land Road in Oshawa and Durham
Board of Education on Taunton
Road in Whitby starting at noon,
says Cora -Lee Bugden. president
of Local 218 of the Canadian
Union of Public Employees
(CUPS), which represents the more
than 1,6(x) support staff. The local
will concentrate most of its mern-
bers at the Catholic school board.
" \Ve need to let people know we
are here:' Nis. Bugden says.
Bill 104, the Fewer School
Boards Act, will set up an Educa-
tion Improvement Commission to
oversee the implementation of edu-
cation reforms in school boards
across Ontario.
Ms. Bugden says the legislation
calls for the commission "to pro-
mote and facilitate the outsourcing
(or contracting out) of support
staff:" That could mean all those
jobs will he gone and so will the

the money required to build the sign.
Originally. it was to be built at the cor-
ner of Whites and Kingston roads, but
there were concerns it would create traf-
fic safety problems at such a busy inter-
section.
The Town of Ajax already has its
own community information sign on the
south side of Hwy. 2 dust east of Wcst-
ne% Road. which was pard for by the
Rotary Club of Ajax and has apparently
been well-received.
"The sign has been really successful
in the community, when it's been work-
ing:' says Mauro Crrellr. programmer -
analyst in Ajax's information systems
department. It was completed in Octo-
ber of 1995 and worked fine until Janu-
an 1997, sa} s Mr Cirelli, when prob-
lems with the modem and LED panel
made it impossible to change the mes-
sages on display. The sign has oni, been
operating intermittently since then.
Ajax's sign was provided by a different
manufacturer than Pickerine's.
Ajax community groups pay S i 0 to
have their messages run continually (in
rotation with others) for two to 10 days.
They pay an additional $1 per day after
that. to a maximum of S 15 and I days.

Act on your
conscience
The times. as the% say, are a-chanein'.
Adult movies. accordin-, to local merchants who sell
and rent them (and indirectly, the law enforcement
agencies charged w ith momtorin_ them) arc no lunger
the domain of dirt, old men clad in lona trench coats.
Thc,'yc become mainstream and couples around
Durham arc creating ;t brisk trade with their patronage
of these % idco and so-called spice' shops.
That's good new s for the man,. axcragc couples who
routincl, rent adult videos to add a little variclx to
their relationships. People who enjoy such entertain-
ment no longer hayc to oo undcrcoxer to find it.
That wasn't alwa,s the case. It wasn't long aLo that
man, people feared X-rated 11101 i outlets would
attract a 'had element' and contribute to the oycrall
moral decline of their community. Protests outside
such stores were commonplace and police rcgularl,
monitored the rnoxics heing rented and sold.
But. in recent xcar., adult nioyic outlets "have prct-
t, well cleaned up their acts." report Durham police•
w hu credit the pressure the, put on stores and improve-
ments at the Ontario Film Rc,iew Board. In fact. it's
..not %cry often" police rccci%e complaints about a
store that prompts them to pay a visit. the, say.
Nk'c'xe matured. it would seem, to recognve there's
nothing far wronL with consenting adults xicwing erot-
ic imagery, in the privacy of their own homes. so long
as no one ,acts hurt.
But, because people are indeed still getting hurt. the
war against pornography continues, as it must.
Police and watchdog groups are still doing battle
against those who produce moy ies and magaiines that
depict the sexual exploitation of men, women and chil-
dren.
As Durham's People Against Pornography puts it,
"If it's violent, it speaks for itself."
But even thoueh the law says duly classified and
approved materials of an erotic nature are legal. it
doesn't mean you wouldn't or shouldn't he offended. II
you are. you ha,c a compelling right to complain to
your local merchant, council member. police or other
agency.
it's also the obligation of every decent human heing
to play a role in the ongoing fight against child pornog-
raphy. I1'you come across such imagery your responsi-
bility is clear: call police immediately.
\ 'e may have come a long way in our acceptance of
erotica, but there's still much work to be done in the
fight against pornography.
There is indeed a fine distinction between the two:
by acting on your conscience. however, you can do no
wrong even if the law says it's acceptable.

To the editor:
]'hiss letter is written in regards to
the recent Ncws Advertiser article
'Blue boxes produce greenhack.'. It
has some interesting points about
recycling that deserve credit but
there are still a lot of gaps with rccy-
cline in Pickerine.
The article says that adding the
new #1 products .doesn't just make
good em irorunental sense, it's eco-
nomically sound too... as they are
highly marketable products". Why
weren't we allowed to put out
mouthwash, juice, liquor and yeg-
etable oil containers hefore'? We'vc
heen putting pop bottles in blue
boxes for a long time and they have
a# I on them.
What about the other plastic items
that don't have a #i on the bottom?
Where do they go'! Probably in the
landfill or maybe to your school or
day care but they can only accept so
much!

City playing
big bad wolf?
Durham Region should be disman-
tled.
That's Oshawa's latest salvo in the
run-up to the Noxemher municipal elec-
tion. Politicians need an issue, either real
ur manufactured. to campaign on. tcllin,
Oshawa taxpayers they're getting a raw
deal from the Region qualifies as such
an issue.
Oshawa is also askin,, the Province to
redraw the houndary Innes so Whith%
and the Courtice pigrtion of Clarington
would Fx come part of the city. Askin•
for Vhith, and Courtice is either a har-
gaining chip to he: negotiated •away or
the City coveting the assc;ssmcni poten-
tial. Don't expect either community to
he willingly swallowed up by (Xhawa.
Part of O.hawa's position is a set-up.
City Politicians are saying to the
Pro\ince. "Get rid of Durham Retnon
and while you're at it, give us \k nhy
and Courtice" When the stuff hits the
fan and regional politicians return the
lire. Oshawa politicians can tell their cit-
izens. "See, we told you. The rest of the
Region hates us. Let's leave"
In the past. Oshawa Mayor Nancy
Diamond said Whitby y and Courtice
would only become pari of the city if
residents in these communities wanted
it. Now she's saying making those cont-
mumues part of the city would -,,i%c
Oshawa the clout it needs.
What does all this mean here in Ajax
and Pickering.' If the City gets its wish.
the Province will probably merge other
communities in Durham. including Ajax
and Pickering. Why stop when the anial-
garnation ball is rolling?
My guess is the Province will
announce something in either June —
just before the summer when most folks
are thinking of cottages and vacations —
or in January, after the municipal elec-
tion.
One of the arguments of the pro -
amalgamation folks is that Ajax and
Pickering should merge on their own or
someone will force it on them. That
'someone' usually means the Province.
Now, it could mean Oshawa.

Second Chance • Wildlife Sanctuary gets its chance to help animals
By MARIANNE TAKACS
SIAIT HITOKIIA
.Durham's recently -established Sec-
ond Chance Wildlife Sanctuary has
found a new home.
Clubl.ink Properties Ltd., which
owns the Cherry Downs Golf & Coun-
try Club in north Pickering, has donat-
ed a 75 -acre property for the sanctuary,
which will provide care for sick,
injured and abandoned animals.
Second Chance is a nun -profit orga-
nization led by Joyce Smith of Picker-
ing, who has been caring for sick and
abandoned animals ever since she was
a child. The donated land is being made
available for the sanctuary for a period
of five years.
For about the past 10 years, her own
home has served as a sanctuary for
dozens of hungry or injured animals at
a time before she found new homes for
them or returned them to the wild.
"This is indeed a 25 -year dream
come true;" says Ms. Smith of the sanc-
tuary's new home. -I very much
believe in the importance of the work
we are doing, and I am gratified by the
enthusiasm and interest of the entire
com mull i t v."
Located in rural north Pickering on
Seventh Concession Road adjacent to
the Cherry Downs golf club, the donat-
ed property includes 25 acres of land
with a house, barn and shed, and
another 50 acres for releasing rehabili-
tated wildlife.
When the circa -1860 house is ready.
it will provide living space and shelter
for volunteers who will care for the ani-
mals 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
ClubLink has also pro-, ided a cash
donation of $5,('(X) to help fund capital
and renovation expenditures. Canada
Trust, through its Friends of the Em i-
ronment program, has awarded a grant
of 57.5(X) to the sanctuary.
Victorian Homes, Durham Materi-
als Recycling and Cashway Building
Centres have donated materials and
labor to the project.
The Second Chance sanctuary, a
federally -registered charity, will be the
only organization of its kind in Durham
Region.
Ms. Smith will run the sanctuary
together with a group ol' volunteers she
has assembled over the years who have
helped her in providing care liar sick.
abandoned and abused animals.
In addition to rehabilitating animals
in her own home, she and her volun-
teers have travelled regularly to several
locations in the region to feed large
numbers of homeless wild cats and
other animals in danger of starvation
and disease.
Ms. Smith notes she is particularly
grateful to Bruce Simmonds of
ClubLink, Eileen Beal of Canada Trust
and Pickering Ward 2 Regional Coun-
cillor Doug Dickerson, without whose
commitment she says the new home for
Second Chance could not have been
established.

playoff game
Tuesday night
BY AL RIVETT
SPORTS REPORTER
PICKERING — The
Pickering Panthers finished the
playoffs and their season with a
lopsided loss to the powerful
Wexford Raiders at the
Scarborough Arena Garden
Tuesday night.
The Panthers were demol-
ished 12-4 by the Raiders in the
final game for both
teams in the

Hockey
League's S,
Super Six
quarter -final play-
off round. The contest was
meaningless for both teams as
Wexford was already assured a
semi-final berth while the
Panthers were eliminated after
two losses last weekend.
* The Panthers finished last of
six teams in the Super Six series
with a record of no wins, five
losses and one tie in their six
games against the top three
teams in the league during the
regular season.
Scoring for the Panthers
against Wexford were Rob
Dancey with a pair, Mike
McCormick and Dan Cioffi with
one each.
Injuries to key players during
the first-round playoff series
against Oshawa severely ham-
pered the Panthers' drive for one
of four semi-final playoff berths.
The Pickering juniors played the
quarter -final round-robin playoff
series without team captain
Richard Spooner who suffered a
concussion, Paul Howes and Jon
Cartile who both suffered liga-
ment damage to their knees and
Jeremy Schott with an elbow
injury. The club has also been
without George Trifon for the
latter half of the playoff round

The Panthers made huge gains
as a hockey club this year, more
than doubling their point output
of the 1995-96 season. Their
record for that season was 14-32-
6 for 34 points, which left them
in fifth place in the league's East
Division and out of the playoffs.
In fact, the Panthers finished
with more points this year than
they accumulated in the previous
three seasons of play.
This year, the Panthers fin-
ished the regular season in first
place in the East Division with a
mark of 34-12-4 for 72 points.
The Panthers ousted the Oshawa
Legionaires in the first round of
the playoffs four games to two in
the best -of -seven series.

Gardiner's Duct Cleaning tackles

downstairs unit.

ensures ducts are
completely rid of dust and
