Today, many such stores call Durham home. Accord- ing to a number of their owners. that's simply because more and more residents in the region's bedroom com- munities want to add a little spice to their -- well -- bed- rooms. "You'd be very surprised by our clientele." says Bill Nadeau, co-owner of Erotica Video on Bayly Street in Ajax. The vast majority' are married couples aged 20 to 55 years I(K)king for something w "enhance and spice up their relationship". Mr. Nadeau says he has some older clients aged up to about 75 years and secs a lot of businessmen -- bank managers, lawyers and doctors -- and heterosexual women. "Only five per cent are your typical common stereotype" of people who frequent adult movie stores, estimates Mr. Nadeau, whose store has 5,000 members. Z)JJ For the most pari. the stores go quietly about their business. But it wasn't always like that. Many residents tearcd X-rated movie stores would attract seedy cus- nnncr, and would contribute to the mural decline of cleaned up th cleaned u th p their community. Protests outside adult movie stores were fairly common and police regularly monitored the movies being rented and sold. Since then. the stores "have pretty well cleaned up their acts," says Durham Regional Police Detective Jim Smith. He credits improvements at the Ontario Film Review Board -- which gives stickers to all approved movies -- and the pressure police put on adult movie store owners several years ago. "We only go to stores when we get complaints, and that's not very often;" notes Det. Smith. 1 haven't been to (a pornographic movie) store for several years." But "you still get individuals going to the (United) States and Quclec for movies (not approved by the Ontario Film Review Board)," says Det. Smith. "Then you have to prove they're selling it or importing it, which is difficult." Today, police are focusing more on child pornogra- phy -- both on the Internet and on film, Det. Smith reports. ❑0❑ While Mr. Nadeau believes members of such organi- zations as People Against Pornography are "entitled to their beliefs". he maintains it's unfair w label people See OWNER/page 2 photo by A.J. However, other councillors defended the project. Ward 3 Region- al Councillor Rick Johnson pointed out all the money is coming out of Town parkland reserve funds which can only be spent on parks and that the project is being built on inexpen- sive land. He maintained it's a worthwhile expenditure that will keep kids out of trouble and wondered whether the Town should continue to sit on a sig- nificant amount of parkland reserve money while its younger residents go without some facilities. "We're going to save it for a rainy day when these kids are in jail?" Ward 2 local Councillor Sherry Senis said the money being raised in the community for the park is all going into a trust account and that youths are indeed organizing and running much of the fund-raising and have brought in $3,000 so far. Picker- ing's insurance premiums will rise about $1,200, she admitted, but added the Town should also avoid building playgrounds and other com- munity facilities if its only goal is to keep insurance costs down. Court . Senis also reminded every- one there will he facilities for activi- ties other than skateboarding at the new park. "Let's not just call it a youth park. it will he used by many resic•ents." Councillors were also told there will he further discussions involving the Town, the community, youth groups and others before final deci- sions arc made on what the park will include.
