However, the new building will not he a reconstruction of the original 130-160-vcar-old stone farmhouse. According to a report from Town staff, the new structure will rather replicate the appearance of the origi- nal "to a reasonahlc extent" . Last lune. Council approved an agreement with a developer under which the developer would dismantle the house and remove all reusable ,;onstruction materials w a storage area before using them to reconstruct the building somewhere in Pickering within two vcars. Council had moved quickly to get the house out of the park at the request of area residents, after defer- ring plans six months earlier to desig- nate it as a historic site and have it restored for community or private use. Heritage Pickering had commis- sioned an investigation of the proper- ty which concluded the one -and -a - half -storey fieldstone house had his- torical significance and was worthy of preservation. But area residents said they didn't want the house turned into any private or community facility because it would create traffic and noise, take away a portion of the park, block their view of the park and create a security hazard. Councillors were told last week the proposed reconstruction in Clare- mont would have an addition to make it more marketable, additional win- dows similar to those on other build- ings of the same vintage, and a differ- ent internal plan "consistent with the spirit of a typical centre hall plan" like the original had. As well, for cost, energy and other reasons, differ- ent construction methods are to be used and not all the original's reusable materials will be employed. The executive committee's deci- sion last week to approve the recon- struction remains to be ratified toy Council next week. IPACt 2-A•THE NEWS ADVERTISER. Under a new plan which came into effect Monday. approximately 40 uniformed officers and four detec- tives assigned to 2.1 Division in Ajax will relocate to Pickering's 25 Division at Brock and Kingston roads. The centralized police service will now be known as .19 Division. The Ajax station. meanwhile. will remain open as a 'community policing centre' and will operate the same hours it no%% does to take reports and provide assistance to residents. The point is our secretaries and caretakers are hard working (usually overworked), caring, dedicated indi- viduals who do their best to maintain safe, clean, efficient and inviting schools for Ontario children. Secretaries and caretakers are often employed at schools for years, they get to know the children and their fam- ilies and become a niccessary and inte- gral pan of schdxrl life. Think about it, parents, would you really want the secretary and Caretaker at your child's school replaced by someone from a secretarial pool or a contracted cleaning company? Do you for one minute think that your child or the seh(oi or you would receive the same service you receive now? I think not! JOANNE BURCHAPD-F. Editor -in -Chief STEVE HOUSTON.
