About 130 residents filled the chamber for the event, held to coincide w ith the week of United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Discrimina- tion on March 21. Students of the Grades 3 and 4 choir from St. Antho- nv Daniel Catholic School opened the evening with O Canada and a sign language rendition of What a Wonderful World dedicated to the memory of Susan McKenna, the school's principal recent - ly killed in a car accident. The theme for this year's forum was 'Iivough Our Eyes', and it presented racism as it is experienced by young people. There were performances on the theme of racism by theatre .uts and dance groups from ional high schools, and pre- ,entations by three accom- plished young people from fickcnng on the themes of hreaking down racial and :ultur l stereotypes, cross- :ultural sensitivity and the :hallenge of belonging to two cultures. Jason Humphreys, a for- rner top student and vale- dictorian at Dunharton High School now studying at the University of Toron- to, made his presentation in verse. 'What is Black:' dealt with the stereotypes and expectations usually associated with black youth. Education es chapdrawg fire at forum BY LINDA WHITE STAT+ REPORrLR The Province's "obsessive inter- est" in education is "undermining the future of our children" and will lead to a "two-tier system" in which only the well-to-do can afford things like music and art lessons. That's the message Royal Com- mission on Learning co-chairman Gerald Caplan shared with several hundred concerned parents, educa- tors and school board support staff at a forum held at Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby Wednesday night. "You'd think they didn't have kids," Mr. Caplan said of Progressive Conservative MPPs and their plans to approve Bill 104 -- The Fewer School Boards Act -- next week. Mr. Caplan is critical of plans to reduce the number of elected trustees, whom he believes have been made scapegoats by the Province in its bid to convince taxpayers the edu- cation system no longer works. And plans to increase the power of parent councils at the same time the responsibilities of trustees dimin- ishes is ill-conceived, maintains Mr. Caplan. He fears the handful of people who sit on parent councils -- no mat- ter how dedicated they are -- will have little contact with other parents "who will be left out in the cold." Instead, teaching all parents how to help their children at home "would help more kids than a million parent councils," said Mr. Caplan. Pickering resident Aisha Umar, a young woman now completing an exec- utive %1BA and preparing for work at IBM. told the forum what it was like to grow up belonging to two culture. Ms. Umar recalled how she used to tell other children she was frorn Iran so she wouldn't be, picked on for being from Pakistan, and how she wasn't com- fortable with her dual heritage until she was about 20. She urged parents and youths from minority groups to combat racism by educating the rest of the com- munity about their culture, interacting with people from other cultures, sharing their experiences and being frank with each other. "It's fixable." she said of the racism problem. "I am so positive it is fixable if we all work together." The forum was well -attended by local government, police and education officials, including Mayor Wayne Arthurs, several Town councillors, Durham West MPP and Minister of Community and Social Services Janet Ecker, and Ontario Riding MP Dan McTcague, who gave the keynote address. Mr. McTeague told the forum Cana- da is a "moxfel" country and that its tri- umph is a result of its success in bring- ing together a diverse mix of cultures which represent " the very best the world has to offer". So instead of waiting for the Easter Bunny at home last weekend, he made his wav to Huntsville for a clearer view of the comet Hale - Bopp. Comets like this don't come too often." he says. Mr. Carlson, who works as a security guard in Toronto, has been an avid amateur astronomer since his wife bought him his first telescope as a gift five years ago. He has since bought two big- ger ones, but notes you don't have to have a fancy telescope, go anywhere or know anything about astronomv to enjoy watching Hale -Bopp. "If you use binoculars that's really the best thing to look at it with.- he says. explaining a telescope pro%ides too narrow a N iew. And all you have to do to avoid the "light pollution" spoiling the view to urban areas is to drive a short distance north. "Even up by Brougham or Hwy. 7 you'll real- ly see a big improvement." But you can probably see Hale -Bopp from your own yard without binoculars. According to Mr. Carlson, the prime viewing dates started March 25 and will continue through April 8 as there will be little interference from moonlight. The comet can he seen between 5 and 5:45 a.m. to the northeast and between 7:15 and 7:45 p.m. in the northwest, about one-quarter way up from the horizon. Look for a fuzzy blob as bright as the brightest stars. With binoculars you'll see a tail growing in size over the next few days. Hale -Bopp has been expected for two years, ever since it was discovered independently by Alan Hale of New Mexico and Tom Bopp of An - zona on July 22, 1995. The comet is a huge piece of ice left over from the beginning of the solar system, explains Mr. Carlson, and it's estimated to be 20 to 40 kilome- tres wide. Its orbital period is approximately 4,000 years -- gravity from Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune make it vary a bit -- and it isn't expected back until 4380. Hale -Bopp was closest to Earth, about 210 million kilometres, on March 22. Man killed in crash was `mellow and easy-going' Pickering driver charged after weekend crash A Pickering man faces charges after a single -vehicle accident in Toronto on the weekend killed a former town resident remembered as a man who never did wrong. Glen Sullivan, who grew up in Pickering before moving to Port Perry last summer, died in Toronto East General Hos- pital early Saturday morning after being admitted hours earlier. The 25 -year-old father of two young boys was a passen- ger in a car travelling east along Danforth Road near Winter Avenue, when the vehicle jumped a curb and struck a tree. From his home on Monday, Kirk Sullivan fondly recalled the nephew he affectionately knew as 'Midge'. He loved the outdoors," said Mr. Sullivan. "He loved fishing. He was his dad's best friend. Thev were veru, very close. They were buddies. "There's really nothing Midge ever did wrong. He was mellow and easy- going. You'd never know he had any problems." He also noted that just, before his death, Mr. Sullivan and his father Glen Sr. were preparing for the launch of a business that was to focus on duct and related work. In honor of Mr. Sullivan, Bassma- nia, a new fishing circuit, will pay tribute to him, and a trust fund has been set up for his Iwo boys, six-year-old Matthew and Dillan, four. Donations can be made at any Royal Bank in Durham Region Along with his boys and father. 'qtr. His funeral was scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Low and Low Funeral Home in Port Perry. Until your boot gets stuck in the mud and your daughter proudly proclaims, "Mommy's dancing" as you hop around on one foot trying to rescue that fine piece of rubber. • You take your van through a car wash, pick up your kids from Gramma's house and they giggle in delight at the "new blue van" Mommy bought while they napped. They can't figure out why it's brown by the time they arrive home a short while later — or why Daddy would have a fit if Mommy actually did pick up a new van while they napped. • One of the first words out of your 13 -month-old son's mouth is "mud". And if you leave him alone for even a second outside, it's apt to be one of the first things IN his mouth, too. Linda White writes in our Tuesday rotation of staff columnists. Saturday, April 26 is your day to improve Frenchman's Bay Help us plant a cottonwood forest and clean up a wetland by picking up litter: Wetlands are one of the most important hahitats found along the Lake Ontario shoreline. Help us protect Frenchman's Bay by planting eastern cottonwood trees at the wetland in the South- West corner of the Bay and picking up litter within the area. Cottonwood forests are found adjacent to wetlands within the Great Lakes basin and provide important cover for wildlife, and often act as a protective buffer for wetlands. Help build a home for common terns: Common toms are a small colonial bird that are declining in numbers throughout the lower Great Lakes. Small colonies of these birds can be rehabilitated effectively by providing proper habitat in the form of a wooden nesting raft placed in a suitable location. The MTRCA needs your help in constructing a common tem raft for Frenchman's Bay. Where: Frenchman's Bay Yacht Club, Parking Lot, 635 Breezy Drive, Pickering. (West side of Frenchman's Bay). TO THE NEWS ADVF.KTISER For the last year -and -a -half. the North American stack mar- kets have been riding a wave of high prices. For about the same length of time, analysts have been predicting they will drop as the result of what's known as a stock market correction. But what is that, what causes it to happen and what could it mean for people who have money invested in the stock market? To answer those questions we first need a quick lesson in Eco- nomics 101. "Price is determined by sup- ply and demand." says Durham College professor Rick Hird. "In this case people are driving up the price of shares on the stock market by demanding more." Due to low interest rates. the traditional alternatives to the markets --bonds, GICs and the like -- just aren't profitable enough. The result is that every- one is investing in the stock mar- ket. After a prolonged period of heavy buying, some stock prices can be, driven so high that they cost more than they may actually be worth. "Some people are look- in.-, at the stock market and say- ing that maybe these share prices have been driven up too high," says Mr. Hird. Thus the talk of a correction. A stock market correction is an across-the-board drop in the price of'sto cks. The stock market crash that led to the Depression is an extreme example of a correc- tion. But it's usually not that bad. Some would argue a correc- tion is already under way; others suggest recent volatility on the Toronto Stock Exchange is busi- ness as usual. So, is a substantial correction on the horizon? "I think the smart answer is Yes because sooner or later you're going to be right," says James Schofield, a financial planner in Ajax. "The market has got to cor- rect at some point. The question is when?" Stopping car fraud tie% Ontario rules have been adopt- ed to help find so-called ghost cars that cost insurance firms millions of dol- lars. The new regulations require insur- ance companies to inspect cars before issuing policies. The rules %ere supported by the Cana- dian Coalition Against Insurance Fraud. Insurance fraud costs Canadians $1.3 billion each ).ear. Part of that money goes to paying claims for cars that never existed, inflated equipment costs and old damage on vehicles in i new collisions. "In some cases, companies have been asked to repair damage from what is supposed to be a "eek -old accident only to find that the scratches and } dents have rust," says coalition execu- tive director Marc -Andre Charlebois. : "Inspecting cars before they are insured should present that. "Inspecting vehicles before writing an insurance policy will help ensure that the car described on paper really does exist so honest policyholders will not be paying for those who want to cheat the system." The Panthers earned the point after playing to a 2-2 overtime tie with the number -two Caledon Canadians at the Pickering Recreation Complex Sunday evening. Pickering began the second - round series by losing 4-1 to the top- ranked Aurora Magna Tigers at the com- plex Friday night. The Caledon and Aurora games are two of six the Panthers will play against the top three teams which won in the first playoff round. The Super Six series continues when the Panthers visit Caledon at the Albion - Bolton Union Community Centre tonight, Tuesday, at 7:30. The Panthers are "elated" to take a point away from the weekend games, says head coach John Blackburn. Caledon finished second overall in the league during the regular season, 12 points ahead of Pickering. The point puts the Panthers in fourth place of the six teams, ahead of both the Thornhill Islanders and the Wexford Raiders who failed to earn any points after the opening week- end of play. "I'm elated that we came away with a point," says Blackburn. A don't think our weekend was that bad. Sure, our goal was to win both games. But, you have to remember that we played two quality teams who finished one-two overall in the league standings. We could have easily been 0-2 after play- ing those two clubs." After a scoreless first period in Sunday's game, Caledon got a goal in the sec- ond period. A powerplay marker by Panthers' Shane Terry early in the third period knotted the score at I-1. Caledon scored six minutes later to go ahead 2-1, but Pickering cen- tre George Trifon tallied with nine min- utes to go to tie the game for good. A five-minute overtime frame failed to set- tle the issue. The first star of the game was Panthers' goaftender Key in Boyle, who faced 41 Caledon shots on net, including mix in the live minutes of extra time. "tie's been fantastic all through the playoff's and last night he might have been better than fantastic," says Blackburn of his number -one netminder. Q LER C. •f ; 4,yTHEQ Meanwhile, in Friday's contest against the Aurora Magna Tigers, who've lost only five games all season. the Panthers trailed 1-0 after one period and 2-1 after the middle frame. The Tigers scored an insurance goal with eight minutes to go in the final stanza and added an empty - net marker for good measure late in the contest. Rob Dancey scored the Ione goal for the Panthers. The Panthers will have to go through the Super Six series without the four vet- eran players who'll be lost through the second round of the playoffs and possibly for the remainder of the season. Pickering has been without Jeremy Schott who has an infected elbow and is at least another week from returning to the line-up. Jon Cartile and Paul Howes are both out with ligament damage in their knees and have vet to start physio- therapy treatments. Defenceman and team captain Richard Spooner suffered two concussions in the Oshawa series and it's doubtful he'll return this season.
