The gas would be used to fuel EPD's existing methane plant, with nothing, according to the company, having to go to landfill. Economist tells Ajax, Pickering business group future is bright BY MARIANNE TAKACS S LV 1 RLI'Ok I Lk The 1990s have been a tough time for Canada economically but our past and current suffering will bring rewards over the coming years. So says John Johnston, senior econ- omist with RBC Dominion Securities in Toronto. The Pickering resident was guest speaker at the Ajax -Pickering Board of -Trade's 1997 Economic Out- look luncheon Thursday at the Regalis restaurant in Pickering. 'I-hc difficult tirnes have been the result of" restructuring in both the pub- lic and private sectors, Mr. Johnson told the assembled hoard members, and Canada has had a jobless recovery. But, he added. "a number of important changes have been made which are permanent and which are going to gen- cratc hcnefits." One major change has been the reduction of government expenditures (as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product) to levels which haven't been seen since the Korean War. Mr. John- ston noted the spending cuts made by governments in Canada have been pro- portionally greater than in the rest of the G-7 and Canada has made the greatest progress in cutting its deficit - - greater than Gcnnany. Japan and the U.S. This effccti-,c deficit fighting has made the country extremely attractive to offshore investors. As well. Another major change has been a dramatic decrease in inflation, with the Canadian rate below the American rate. Imrstors like low inflation and it appears the rate here will continue to he below that in the U.S. "There's no fear of inflation in Canada for the foreseeable future," noted Mr. Johnston, with one reason hcing the relatively high level of unem- ployment. Low interest rates which are accom- panying low inflation, he added, are also bringing a payoff in economic growth. There are two major challenges ahead which Canada must deal with if - the economic future is to remain hri(Tht. maintained Mr. Johnston. One is to keep interest rates and govern- ment deficits down to promote the kind of productivity growth that made the '60s such prosperous times for most Canadians. "Productivity growth is what gener- ates a high standard of living." he told the hoard members. 1%It. Johnston suggested the best route for the Bank of Canada to follow in the future will be to move interest rates up early and moderately in response to inflation so it will not have to move them up more later. The other challenge will he dealing with a Canadian dollar which is cur- rently "hugely undervalued" and likely to get stronger. RBC Dominion Securi- ties is forecastimt, the dollar will go up to 7`{ cents U.S. by the end of this vear and Kt) cents by the end of next. The good news is Mr. Johnston believes the increasingly less resource - dependent Canadian export sector has become less sensitive to currency fluc- tuations. As for unemployment. Mr. Johnston expects the rate in Canada will remain relatively high for awhile even as the economy grows because many people who had given up looking_ for work will return to the Joh market. EPD vice-president Gregory Vogt says he's surprised the report was issued before his company was able to complete and hand over the traffic and environmental studies it was -- asked to provide and for which no deadline was set. "We're trying to co-ordinate with them and they're saying there's no point, we're going to refuse you." Mr. Vogt says the Region has been sloth In providing the information needed to prepare the studies and estimates it will be another 60 days before the documents are finished. "I was about to go out my front door when this van came careening across the yard," says Carole Goodfellow, who lives in the townhouse complex at 925 Bayly St. "If I'd hccn It) second,, faster I could have been in front of the van." The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when a two -axle straight truck rear-ended a minivan as it was attempting to turn into the complex parking area. says Durham Regional Police Constable Julia Whittaker. Neither the truck driver nor the woman and children in the van were seriously injured. The truck driver was charged with careless driving. Mrs. Goodfellow hopes her close call will serve as a warn- ing to all motorists who drive fast on Bayly Street in front of her and others' homes. Mrs. Goodfellow also hopes the Town of Pickering and Durham Region (which is responsible for Bayly) take notice of the accident and finally give some considera- tion to lowering the speed limit on the road. She's made the request before, but her efforts have been in vain. All successful Reform Party candidates have legitimately won their position on the next federal ballot. There are no token_ women anywhere in the Reform Party — not in the back room, not seeking nominations, not seeking election, and certainly not in the House of Commons. This is yet another blatant example of how desperately out of touch the prime minister is with the Canadian people. Voters have had it with special interest groups, special status, and special consid- eration for the chosen few. Patronage makes Mr. Chrdtien and his less -than - honorable recipients look pathetic. The long; campaign: Here's a rea- son to criticize the provincial govem- ment: In an admiral attempt to cut down on the amount of paperwork municipal election candidates have to deal with, the Province has made some changes. One allows candidates to file a combined registration and nomina- tion form beginning March 31. Once a candidate has tiled this form, thev can start campaigning — raising money, knocking on do ors, and l(x)king tor y our support. That means eight months of campaigning. I bet you can't wait. D> ja vu all over again: Here's my municipal election prediction: Every candidate will say "Vl'e need to attract more industry, more high-tech jobs, to our community to give our young peo- ple a chance at a decent future.' Trust me, every municipal candidate in every community in Ontario will make this statement. When you hear a candidate sav this, do me a favor and ask where these high-tech jobs will come from. Jobs, jobs, jobs: Was KIIrI Campbell right when she made a com- ment in the last federal election cam- paign about unemployment remaining high for years? Three -and -a -half years later and unemployment is still hover- ing around 10 per cent. Now, Progressive Conservative leader Jean Charest releases his party's election platform which, he says, will create one million jobs. Problem is about 2(X),000 people enter the work- force every year. You do the math — five-year term multiplied by 200,000 equals one million jobs. Where does that leave the unemployment rate'? "She was warm, even when the sun wasn't shining," a St. Anthony Daniel Catholic School student carrying a paper sun explained at a memorial service for Susan McKenna, a Whitby resident who started her 27 -and -a -half year career in the local separate school system in Ajax. Another student held a paper wreath of spring flowers to "remind us of how fresh and alive Ms. McKenna was." A girl carried a pot of tulips "because Ms. McKenna loved plants... During spring, nature is reborn, just like Ms. McKenna is reborn with God." Dozens of parents also attended the memo- rial, where many pupils, teachers and other Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board staff broke down in tears. Ms. McKenna, 50, was killed March 13 on Hwy. 401 in North York just before K p.m. when the Camaro she was a passenger in swerved to avoid a collision and lost control. The vehicle crossed three lanes of traffic before crashing into the guard rail on the south side of the westbound express lanes near Allen Road. A piece of the guardrail broke through the Camaro's rear wind- shield, striking Ms. McKenna when the car was forced into the bar- rier. According to Ontario Provincial Police, the accident was caused by motorists in a Mcrcun Topaz and an A.M.C. Renault who were dri- ving erratically. An Etobicoke man has been charged with criminal negligence and dangerous driving caus- ing death. Police sa% the driver of the Mercury Topaz fled the scene. The Panthers play Downsview in the tournament final at the Garden Sunday. The Panthers lost 2-1 to Burlington in their first tournament game, which was dominated by hot goaltending at both ends. It wasn't until the second period that Koufis scored to give Pickering the lead. Assists went to Ryan Lamanna and Steven Shanks. Burlington battled back and popped two in the third for the win. Pickering goaltender Kevin Prebble was named MVP of the game. Pickering captured the must -win second match 3-1 over the Barrie Junior Colts. Barrie scored early in the first period and was pressing for more when Shanks tallied unassisted late in the frame to tie the game. Both teams missed opportunities in the second stanza and went into the third tied 1-1. With 4:14 remaining in the game, Koufis worked the puck free and Michael Hurl buried the go- ahead goal for the Panthers. In the last minute, the Colts pulled their goaltender hoping to tie the game, but Kavanagh dug the puck out of the corner, fed a pass to Hurl, who relayed it to Stark, who tallied the empty netter. Hurl was MVP of the game. Other team members included Blake Coultice, Adam Morra, Matt Frawley, Michael Carey, Christopher Paul and James Jarvis. Head coach is Rick Lamanna, assistant coach Mitch Kavanagh and trainer Tom Koufis. Explosive bantam Raiders suffer scoring drought in tourney final The Ajax -Pickering Raiders Julie's Esso major bantam 'AAA' rep hockey team went into a goal -scoring drought at the wrong time at the recent Welland tournament. The Raiders couldn't muster enough offence in the champi- onship final against the Detroit Falcons and dropped a 7-2 decision. The Julie's Esso bantams advanced to the championships after winning all three round- robin games, while outscoring their opponents 16-6. Match - ups and scores for the round- robin contests weren't provid- ed. Brian Hughes led the way for the Raiders in round-robin play, winning most valuable player awards in two games and scoring four goals in one of the contests. Also scoring during the tournament were team captain Jeff Miles with eight goals and four assists, defenceman T.J. Kemp with two goals and three assists, and forward Oliver Lopez with five assists, Jason MacDonald with four points, Garett Winder, Mike Sauter and Shawn Silliphant with three points each and Dave Visconti, Mike Roga, Tim Despres and Pat Tobin with two apiece. Goalies Paul Guthrie and Dave Nortes shared the net - minding duties at the tourney. Earlier this month, the Raiders were eliminated by Peterborough from the Eastern Ontario 'AAA' playoffs in a best -of -three series. No scores were provided. Scoring for Ajax -Pickering were Miles with a goal and three assists, Winder with three assists, Tobin, Roga, Lopez and Silliphant with a goal each and Sauter and Visconti with one assist apiece. That was evident in game four of the Panthers -Oshawa 1_egionaires playoff series at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium Thursday night. Pickering forwards couldn't muster much offence as the Panthers went down to defeat 3-1. The Metro Junior Hockey League best -of -seven intradi- visional playoff series was tied 2-2 going into Friday night's fifth game at the Pickering Recreation Complex after our deadline. Game six of the series will be played tonight. Sunday at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium at 7 p.m. Game seven will be played in Pickering Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m., if necessary. The lack of scoring punch in Thursday's contest has Panthers' head coach John Blackburn shaking his head. "This is no time to go through a slump. In both of our losses we scored only one goal. One goal in a playoff game isn't going to get it done. Some of our key kid. who've been leading the charge all season just haven't been there in the losses. If you're a scorer. you have to score: if you're a checker, you have to check. We just have to get back to basics:' says Blackburn. However. the Panthers' coach gives Oshawa full praise for a well -played game on Thursday. "You have to give Oshawa lots of credit. You could tell from the drop of the puck that they were hungry.
