BY LINDA WHfffE STAFF REPORTEY For 23 -year-old Tiffany Dawe, living in a co -opera - five housing community has created opportunities her family never dreamed of. She helps out once a week in Pickering's Rouge - mount Co-operative Homes office, assists with floor maintenance, lends a hand at social events and is the dri- ving force behind a walking club. She has also begun a small catering business called The Tiffany Touch and hakes diabetic goodies for peer pie she knows and for meetings of nearby organizations. Tiffany who is developmentally disabled, is proud to live in her own apartment with assistance from family, friends. a roommate, neighbors and some paid support staff. "Thirty years ago, a woman like Tiffany would be living apart from her family and her community in an institution with 500 other people with disabilities," notes Janet Klces, family co-ordinator of the Deohaeko Sup- Ixm Network, "Ten years ago, she might be found living in a group home with six other disabled people and working in a workshop with 50 other people with disabilities." Today. "she is a busy, participating member of a vibrant co-operative community" and her story is only one of Ill, Ms. Klees reports. The difference was made possible through the effort% of a dozen parents and one grandparent of developmen- tally -disabled children who came together to ensure their offspring lived in a welcoming community. Those families formed the founding board of Rouge - mount Co-operative Homes and received funding from the Ministry of Housing. They oversaw the construction of a non-profit apartment building which would meet the housing needs of more than 200 people -- including their developmentally -disabled children. At the same time, they formed the Deohaeko Support Network, which exists to consider how the sons and daughter, of the founding families might best be sup- ported at Rougemount. A Family Benefits Allowance pays for housing charges, food and other expenses. Special Services at Hume funding from the Ministry of Community and Social Services pays for needed support. A 17 -year-old student of St. Charles Garnier Catholic school in Whitby also faces charges of uttering and possession of counterfeit money after a bogus $50 bill was used to pay for a meal at the school cafete- ria, said Inspector Greg Reid. Police say there are several signs which give away the bogus bills: • The hologram on the glossy gold square at the top left of real bills is missing on dupli- cates. • The shading of the goose in flight on the back of $100 bills should be consis- tent. On some fakes, the outline of the wings is of a higher gloss. • The texture of the paper is notice- ably different. cadtcei► for Y to THE NEWS ADVERTISER WEDNESDAY, MARCH S, 1"7 - PACE S NAPx4ftle ootardiefolw P/we e 3t ;-aPEC P—AIAMCH I % kids - Come to Hon Garlic d . .
