Frontiers Foundation - Operation Beaver has built more than 2,000 homes for off -reserva- tion natives since 1964. But, in an attempt to lower the provincial deficit, the provincial Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing last March slashed the $500,000 annual grant the organization received, However, Frontiers already has 38 projects lined up for this summer, execu- tive director and Pickering resi- dent Reverend Charles Catto ,lays. "We sympathize with the gov- ernment and the idea of cutting the deficit", but unless the gov- ernment restores funding, the program is cancelled, he says. The recent Royal Commission on aboriginal affairs noted Frontiers is the only program to help the housing needs of off - reservation natives, he notes. Cancelling the program's funding is the "final blow to their hopes", Mr. Catto charges, "We're aware that (Minister of Culture and Citizenship) Marilyn Mushinski has $10 million ear- marked for volunteerism and not one dime has been spent yet. We'd he happy to accept $500000 from that department. We know of 38 native families that would be happy," Mr. Catto says. "These are people in need of basic shelter." Frontiers had been receiving funding from the housing min- istry for 10 years. Now "it's down to zero in the interests of deficit reduction. I , Yvq • T i Learning` to read `opens up a whole new world FamilyLiteracy Week is Feb. 22 to March 1 in Durham Region BY LINDA WHITE STAFF REPORTER For a 34 -year-old man, picking up the phone and admitting to a stranger that he needed help learning to read was a difficult first step on a confidence -building road. "It was hard to make that first step." recalls Mark (not his real name). "I had a friend who knew I didn't read very well and he helped me make that call." Mark has been a student with the Literacy Council of Durham Region for about a year, and in that time, his confidence has increased along with his reading and writing skills. He belongs to a Bible study group at his church, and remembers a time when he would pass whenever it came his turn to read aloud. A knew my reading wasn't too good. but now I read out loud and feel OK about it," says Mark, who graduated from a vocational school and managed to get by with poor reading skills. "My tutor is great. He's number one. If only there were more people who would give up their time to help others..." says Mark, who'd one day like to be a tutor. In the meantime, he encourages others with poor reading and writing skills to call the Literacy Council, which is celebrating Family Literacy Week from Feb. 22 to March 1. "What do you have to lose'? You have more to gain. You need an education these days to get any- where in the world." The Literacy Council is made up of volun- teers who tutor adults in reading and writing. Volunteers must attend a three-day workshop and are trained and certified as tutors in accor- dance with basic minimum requirements of the Literacy Council of Durham Region and Laubach Literacy of Canada. Tutors are paired with students in a confi- dential arrangement and together decide when and where they will hold regular meetings. Tutoring gives Pickering resident Angela Ahchong a chance "to give something back. I realized that I'm OK and maybe someone else could be helped. I like reading, put two and two together and here I am." A tutor since 1994. Ms. Ahchong has worked with two students. The first "went as far as he could ... To see someone have the con- fidence to go on, well, that's as much as you can do." While she can imagine how difficult life would be without the ability to read and write, Ms. Ahchong also recognizes "these people are really ingenious. To get this far in life without reading takes a lot of skill. If you can't read a street sign, think of how lost you'd be. We take that for granted." But she hopes learning to read will "open up a whole new world" for students. "Just sitting down and reading a novel is such a simple joy. For others. it's wanting to read to their grand- children" that leads them to the Literacy Council. Indeed, young children are often a catalyst for adults wanting to learn to read, the Literacy Council reports. Others want to learn a specif- ic skill for a specific purpose, such as getting a driver's licence or apprenticeship ticket. For some, the loss of a support person through death or divorce forces them to assume dailv administration of life skills, while others are seeking advancement at work. For more information, call the Literacv Council Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 a -m. to 4:30 p.m. and Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. .'We're the one stop 2 t for all our m ,"t- en ce needs. l '•r 031 ahaasos, schedatt•d mafist•aaao•, tuxes -%W a" a bleak• wofrk, LhaflWs oaW mw p"m W j o. 1s.03 = Taco Auto ft•' m =et only ft we pnimm an aw" a. Our labor costs are extremely low because most are volunteers. They don't expect to get paid. They bring their training and expertise," Mr. Presley says. Volunteers come from across Canada, Turkey, Germany and Ireland, Mr. Presley says, adding volunteers are lined up for this summer. "We're committed to these (38) pro- jects," Mr. Presley notes. "We're look- ing for the dollars and we don't have it. When there's no money from the gov- ernment, we have to ask individuals and service clubs. But they're reluctant to help because the government isn't helping fund us." Leertsm, surely they can give to some people in need rather than squeaky wheels in our backyard," Mr. Catto says. Frontier members met recently with Durham West MPP and Community and Social Services Minister Janet Ecker, hoping she would fight in cabi- net to get the funding restored. "We all had the feeling Janet would do her best to fight for us," Mr. Catto says. "We're really pleading with (Premier) Mike (Harris) and (Treasurer) Ernie (Eves) and the whole gang at Queen's Park to get in and do their share" "Thee had hcen told by two min- istries there wasn't the money available for their program," Ms. Ecker says. "It's an excellent program and they had other sources of funding." Ms. Ecker says she approached both the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Al Leach and Minister of Citizenship and Culture Marilyn Mushinski about providing money for the program. "There are more good programs out there for us to support than we can afford," Ms. Ecker notes. Frontiers is a registered charity and will give receipts, Mr. Catto says. You can donate to Frontiers Foundation at 2615 Danforth Ave., Suite 203, Toronto, Ontario, M4C 1L6 or by calling 416-690-3930. WEIGHT RESTRICTION REGULATIONS will be in force on roads under the jurisdiction of the Regional Municipality of Durham, effective March 3, 1997 to approximately May 2, 1997. One thing is abundantly clear -emotions are running very Ice escapades high these days as nervous public servants see their livelihoods threatened by Progressive Conservative reforms in this province. The CUPE members we heard from were angry about the areal treat outsourcing of jobs and by being 'insulted by our home town newspapers'. Yes, the News Advertiser has been supportive of most of the reforms the Harris government has put into place during this term. The people of Ontario certainly got the government they voted for. But we have not supported all changes — most particularly cuts to health care spending at the hospital level. We still expect the government to deliver on its proposals for the roles of hos- pitals in Durham Region and feel it should have done so before spending cuts were made. And we do recognize the value of teaching assistants and clerical staff in the day-to-day lives of our children. There are zertainly not too many of them in our schools and we're glad to see them there. Cuts to education should come in the form of sharing of ser- vices, a realistic approach by workers to today's workplace and the downsizing of the bureaucracy - not in taking bodies from the classroom. Reform is necessary in Ontario to keep the economy on its tentative road to improvement and ensure a financially stable future for the province and our children. 0 '. v Letters to the editor Still early in his hockey career, my son Taylor's tickled pink to have shared the same ice surface as his heroes from the Buzzards. On behalf of fellow secretaries in Ajax public schools, we would like to let you, know a little about our jobs and the present situation we find ourselves in. We are protesting against Bill 104, which if passed would eliminate full- time custodial, secretarial and educa- tional assistant staff we currently have in place in Durham public and separate schools. We have grave concerns regarding these proposed changes and the impact on our schools and children. We believe the quality of the class- room education is dependent upon the many services which have been defined as "out of classroom". We do have a right to our jobs, at which we work as hard and suffer the same stresses as anyone in the private sector. Those of us in Durham who have clerical, custodial, technical and educa- tional assistant positions are certainly Students not overpaid, even when compared with the private sector. Please check your facts before making negative, all-encompassing statements against us. You also called us a "diminishing breed". We're sorry but we don't think of secretaries as a diminishing breed. You will find most secretaries have been in their current schools for a number of years. We know the students by name and the parents have come to know and trust us. Our schools and children are depen- dent upon the services of the school sec- retary. She manages to act as a public relations officer to parents, staff and stu- dents; computer expert; handles money, school bank accounts and the school Block Parents budget; publishes the school newsletters; is nurse, office man- ager; student information record keeper; the person who ensures the safe arrival of students; confidante and friend to many parents, students, staff and com- munity members. This role cannot be fulfilled by a sec- retarial service which would be unable and paren their school's non-teaching staff to provide the high degree of proles-- sionalism, confidence and knowledge that parents, staff and students have come to appreciate and expect. We feel that schools need consisten- cy, dependability and trustworthiness as qualities of our "out of classroom" sup- port staff. We urge you to visit our local schools in Ajax and watch us at work; walk a mile in our shoes before you make pre- sumptions and insulting remarks about jobs and positions you know nothing about. Our children's education, health and safety does not begin or end in the con- fines of the classroom. Jane Bailie, Roland Michener P.S. Linda Brisbane, Duffrns Bay P.S. Judy Ste. Have you ever worked in a school'? I do! And for you to discredit the quote "the security blanket of children at school", is alarming and disturbing. I urge you to ask parents and students how important they feel custodians, educational assistants, clerks and secre- taries are to their school. I'm sure you will discover that a good number of them are grateful for the "non -teaching" staff. I am a secretary in a Durham high school and I pose these questions to you and other members of the disapproving public: Who do you think answers the phone after hours and on unpaid time when a distraught parent calls, looking for their son/daughter, who has not arrived home by 5:15 p.m.? And who do you think gives or loans a student money when they have forgot- ten their lunch, or needs a taxi to get home when they are ill and there is no one to pick them up? I'll tell you from experience that I'm one of the many who has answered such a phone call and given or loaned my own money. Yes, that was my choice but when I am working my number -one pri- ority is the safety and well-being of the many students who cross my path every day! I'm telling you from personal experi- ence if the children were not first and foremost on the lists of the non -teach- ing staff then we would not be the "security blanket of children at school"! -Ann Molloy, Pickering wslovb o ive ifi your al".- "'T y.2, o the editor: e Do you really think CUPE members are 3 [making to the streets to "preserve the security Ling for too many jobs of too many CUPE members," as you said in your Feb. 18 edito- Your smugness is scary. :You want to separate two moral issues b hat can't be divided: the right of taxpayers Cd families to preserve education standards d the right of taxpayers and families to jobs. The team went 5-1 in the event and won the B side of the double knockout playdown. The rink defeated last season's provincial champion Don Glintz foursome from the Whitby Curling Club in the B side final. With Norton and Bob Rudkin at vice, Barry Scott at second, and Bert Durand playing lead, the team now advances to the region playdown this Saturday and Sunday at the High Park Club. The Ontario Curling Association playdowns are already nearing completion for this season. There is only one zone playdown left — the Curling News Governor Generals for pairs of mixed teams. It's slated for the Oshawa Golf Club March 15 and 16. Annandale still has two bon - spiels yet to run. The St, Pat's Mixed Bonspiel goes March 15, and then the last chance Bonspiel is set for April 12 and 13. Annandale has a bantam mixed rink that has participated all season in one of the four Intercity Leagues. The team of Blair Metrakos, Jason March, Kade Bulger and Shauna Critchley was in a Feb. 23 play - down to determine which Division Trophy it will play for this Sunday. The rink ended up in a three- way tie for third position out of eight teams, so it now advances to group C. D or E in the Toronto Curling Association Bantam Intercity Championships. Rinks from the other three leagues are also ranked through their playdowns; four teams in each group will play a single knockout playdown to determine each group champion. The Annandale bantam rink will travel to St. George's for its games.
