Ajax picks March 31 for meeting with Pickering AJAX » Town councillors have set Easter Monday as a possible date to discuss some form of amalgamation with their Pickering counter - Parts At a meeting of Ajax Council's general gov- emment committee on Thursday, politicians selected March 31 at 4:30 p.m. in the Ajax coun- cil chambers for a meeting. Earlier this month Ajax politicians had select- ed March 6 or 7 as a possible meeting date, but neither day was suitable. Whenever the councils meet, it will have to be a public meeting, Ajax clerk Martin de Rond and Town solicitor Ron Hawkshaw told the commit- tee. Pickering councillors have been pushing for a meeting, with amalgamation of the two commu- nities to be the main topic of discussion. Ajax councillors don't support a merger, but are willing to look at more partnerships that save money and improve efficiencies. A report from acting chief administrative offi- cer Richard Pansotto outlined some past and cur- rent partnerships, including the Pickering -Ajax F .:FREE CLU Give the gift of Mobility and receive a free CLUB vehicle anti -theft device and Whitby Animal Control, handi-trans opera= tions and the Pickering -Ajax Rescue Unit. The towns also share a hospital, the United Way and the board of trade. Mr. Parisotto noted during meetings between staff of the two communities, additional partner- ship opportunities have been identified. Among issues and concerns Mr. Parisotto identified are "fear/threat of amalgamation", "loss of 'control"', loss of Town identity and history, public apathy, job loss, and resistance to change. Mr. Parisotto will contact Pickering officials to determine if the meeting can be held on March 31. 72x-1212 Bell Mobf 1t ' { RAGE 2 -THE NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY, FEBRIIARN'23.1997 q hvmffqm v "" ................ .0 w no GENERAL ELECTRIC HOTPOINT O GENERAL ELECTRIC. The Registrar has the power to cancel a carri- er's licence. Truckers say manufacturers to blame for defects FROM PAGE: I a result of flvine truck tires in Ontario in the last two years, three of which have been in Durham Region. Art Decocne, an owner -operator from the Woodstock area, agrees "there are vehicles out there that need to be better maintained," but he thinks the government should target the com- panies which manufacture hearings rather than drivers and owners. "A lot of the stuff that is happening right now is unpreventable," he says. "The majority of tires that are coming off are because of hearing failures and there's nothing the driver or the owner of the truck can do unless he tears hk truck apart every week." Norm Haynes, a driver with Sanford Trucking, says the increase in fines doesn't bother him as long as the government goes after the owners. "As a driver there's only so much you can do...we're just trying to make a living," he says. However, Mr. Havnes says there are a lot of "lazy" drivers on the road who don't check their rigs regularly. Mr. Ihcocric agrees, saying there are companies on the road which don't operate safe rigs and "until they get a big fine, they'll keep on doing what they're doing." New Pickering library on the books after budget talks BY LINDA WHITE STAFF REPORTER PICKERING -- A new library in the western part of town is one step closer to reality after $650,000 for a new facility was approved in preliminary budget talks Thursday. And, earlier in the week, a zoning review of the Rouge Hill Library site was approved, paving the way for its eventual sale. The new library carries a price tag of $1 million, but the Town already has much of that money. It collected $249,000 from the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, which pur- chased a portion of the Rouge Hill Library site to facilitate the widening of Hwy. 401. The Town also has $276,000 set aside in development charges and expects to net about $360,000 from the sale of the Rouge Hill site. Town Council authorized staff Monday to commence a zoning review of the site - the capital funding needed in 1997 to pro- - located on the west side of Rougemount ceed with the western library branch pro - Drive, south of Kingston Road -- and ject" in that location was shot down at adjoining properties to the north and west. Meanwhile, in other budget news, numerous councillors have expressed con- cerns that interior walkways in parks are not being maintained during the winter months. Ward 3 Local Coun. Enrico Pistritto believes the Town should also maintain the Waterfront Trail, as Ajax does. "It's causing problems," he said. He was told it would cost about $65,000 to purchase another machine to clear walkways, which doesn't include manpower. He has asked staff to determine if it's possible to clear more paths within the Town's current budget. Finally, councillors approved a new park at Brock and Rossland Roads at a cost of $200,000. They will look at building a park at Pinegrove Avenue at the north end of the Valley Ridge development in next year's budget. Flood alert in Ajax, Pickering The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority has issued a flood alert for arca residents. Donald Wright, the director of environmental approvals and plan- ning for CLOCA, says a combination of warm temperatures and rain could produce higher than normal levels in area creeks and streams and there could be some flooding in low-lying areas. Ice on all bodies of water "will be extremely unsafe throughout this weekend and into next week," says Mr. Wright. CLOCA is recommending parents alert children to stay away from streams, ditches and storm sewer inlets. The flood alert remains in effect through Sunday for waterways in Oshawa, Whitby, Clarington, Ajax and Pickering. For more information on the weekend alert, call CLOCA at 579- 0411. If the sight of an infant, tine T-shirt with a plaintive wail of sorrow written on it doesn't grab your heart, you should check it, see if you still have a pulse. The Clothesline Pr(,)ect shows man dozens of different colored T-shirts which sharply focus the viewer's attention on abuse. The white shirts show a date and name for women who died from violence: yellow or beige shirts reflect bat- tering or assault; black shins tell the tales of women who have been emotionally or verbally abused: other colored shins highlight rape. sexual assault. incest or child abuse, sexual orientation abuse and racial or ethnic abuse. The purpose of the shins is fourfold: to bear witness to the survivors as well as the victims of the war against women: to help with the healing process: to educate, docu- ment and raise society's awareness of abuse against women and children: and to provide a network of support, encour- agcment and information. The exhibit is painful to the soul, but as necessary as the air we breathe. The problem for too long has been the cover- up of abuse. By designing the shins, abused women are try- ing to break the silence and climb above their cycle of pain. At Monday's luncheon in Kitchener, Mr. Snobelen astonished his captive audience of 300 with the acrimonious testament that "about 17 million school days" had been lost to "job action" in the past 20 years! It just does not add up. If all of Ontario's teachers (about 200,000) took an entire month off (20 working days), the total is only 4 million days! Within the past 20 years, how many teacher "job actions" have lasted more than one month? Even the largest strike, by Ontario secondary school teachers in 1975, lasted only eight weeks, but that was not part of Mr. Snobelen's 20 -year calculation! Since 1977, there have been, at times, many teachers/boards in "job action" positions or involved in one -day "job action" demonstrations. Did Mr. Snobelen include in his calculation those days when teachers were locked JOANNE BURGHARDT, Editor -in -Chief STEVE HOUSTON, Managing Editor BRUCE DANFORD, Advertising Manager ALVIN BROUWER, Retail Advertising Manager FRED EISMONT, Classified Advertising Manager MONIQUF. It's hypocritical of us to ship our waste to some other locale. It's a fee - hie attempt to bury our heads in the sand and ignore the fact that this is a local problem that needs to be solved here, not passed on to others. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Pickering became a world leader in effectively and efficiently dealing with our own waste? I've lived in Pickering for 50 years and I hate to see our land and sideroads constantly being dumped on with costly garbage. Perhaps the community should pay contractors to take this waste to a con- venient centre for proper disposal. This could eliminate the higher costs for the clean-up of illegally dumped waste. In addition, an csthestically pleasing community could be main- tained. Yes, we've had more than our fair share of other municipalities' trash, but the Brock West site is not good for anything else. Is it really our turn to push the problem of garbage contain- ment on to others? Let's keep our own waste in our own backyard. Of the residents in the vicinity who opposed the EPD plan, 99 per cent of them did not live there before Brock West opened. Why not encourage a business that can give the refuse a sec- ond life? This would be more consis- tent with our vision statement, "A complete community, striving for excellence and ready for the 21st cen- tury. Remember: "Yesterday's trash, Tomorrow's Future!" Radiation dose due to emissions from the Pickering Nuclear Station. Dose is reported in microsieverts (NSv), an international unit used to measure dose. Proposed legal limit— October 1 to December 31,1996: 1.8 for dose from — previous quarter. 3.4 emissions: 1000 per year — TOTAL FOR 1996: 11.3 from a single chest X-ray: about 70 Note: Natural background radiation, the annual legal limit for station emissions and the dose from a typical X-ray are provided for reference. Emissions are in addition to background radiation. The radiation doses due to emissions are for the most exposed persons living near the station. They would typically apply to persons living just outside the station boundary who are at their residences 24 hours a day, who drink local water, and eat local fish and produce. The doses were calculated using actual data from routine analysis of air, water, fish and vegetation samples. as well as station emission data. Most persons would actually receive less than the doses indicated because they have different eating habits or live farther away from the station. Radiation doses decrease significantly as the distance from the station increases. Less than 3% of the radiation dose received from the station was due to liquid emissions, wF.ile the remainder was a result of airborne emissions. GMAC has smart idea about leasing G be Leasing is fat RTLEASE .one ct the most popular options to financing a vehicle. And GMAC's SmartLease wants to show you how. Consider these benefits: Leasing has lower monthly payments: you get more value for vour automotive dollar and: you only pay for the use of the vehicle. In plain language, you buy more vehicle for less money. Leasing benefits the buyer and the dealership alike. Thanks to low payments and c charges, purchasers get more vehicle f their dollars. You can choose either more options or move into an upper level vehicle. Dealerships Ilk the prospects customer retentior leased vehicle has t to the original dea comes the opportunity to put the customer back in another vehicle. The factors that determine the monthly lease payment include the size of the downpayment, what the vehicle will be worth at the end of the lease period and the length of the lease. The principal portion of the lease payment is the depreciation. That is, the difference between the cost of the new vehicle and what the car will be worth at the end of the lease period. Figuring out your lease payments is easy. Subtract the figure of what the car will be worth at the end of the lease from its sticker price and add the appropriate GST and PST. For those who don't wish to buv the car of their dreams outright, leasing is a viable option. GMAC's SmartLease enables you to drive a new -chicle more often, without worrying about trade-in value and other vehicle ownership -related problems. With SmartLease, you have the option of purchasim-, the vehicle outright at the end )eriod or just move 1wer vehicle. There also potential tax vantages. More and more people are turning to leasing their next vehicle and Ford Credit Red Carpet Lease rolls out all the options in a Plan that offers complete flexibility. The beauty of this unique two-year Red Carina Lease is that it's so affordable. When you lease a vehicle, your payments are based only on the value of the car for the term of the lease. Because you pay for only a portion of the vehicle's total value, your Red Carpet Lease payments are much lower than what you would pay monthly if you were to finance the vehicle over a 49-month/60-month term. On delivery of your new vehicle, the first month's lease payment and a refundable security deposit are all that, is required to get you into a brand new Ford car or truck. However, if you wish to make a downpayment, that is applied toward the value of your vehicle and it actually lowers the monthly lease payment. For example, for every $1 ,000 down, monthly payment is reduced by approximately $50. These lower monthly payments mean that you can effectively carry a 24 -month lease term and free yourself from long-term financial commitments. Throughout the lease, you're covered by Ford's comprehensive factory warranty. Now compare that to financing a car over a longer period such as 49- Ford months. By the time that car is paid Taurus off', your warranty has already expired and you're likely to experience maintenance and repair costs associated with owning an older vehicle. With the Red Carpet Lease, you're never driving a car that's more than Toyotaleases With TCL! Toyota treats its customers' leasing ', needs with Care. Unless your friend is in the room with you. chances are you use the telephone. The telephone was invented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell. Alexander Graham BeU was born on March 3, 1847, in Scotland. He was a scientist who wanted to discover a way for deaf people to communicate better. He studied the telegraph, which was then the only way to send messages long distance. But the telegraph required the use of Morse code, which made it difficult for many People to use. Bell believed that the same wires that transmitted the teleBmPh signal could also be made to send the sound of a human voice. Bell created a working model of his device in 1876. He was granted a patent for his Idea on March 7, 1876. On March 10, 1876, Bel] sent the first telephone message ever. He said -Mr. Watson, come here. 1 want you to his assistant.
