CUPS protest is
`Straight From the Heart'
Schoen board support staff will be talking Straight From
the Heart when they take their protest against education
reforms to area MPPs' offices today.
Hundreds of members of Lox:al 218 of the Canadian
Union of Public Employees (CUPE) were expected to
descend upon the offices of Durham West MPP Janet Ecker,
Durham Centre MPP Jim Flaherty and Oshawa MPP Jerry
Ouellette late Friday afternoon.
Straight From the Heart is the theme of the Valentine's
Day prinest.
We have jobs at stake. but we also feel we are part of the
security blanket of children at school." explains CUPE
Local 218 president Coxa Lee Bugden. "if a child isn't feel-
ing secure, it will affect their work in the classroom."
maintains Ms. Hugden, referring to a proposal to '*out-
source" all non -classroom jobs, including custodial and
clerical.
The Province has announced that starting next year it will
fund education, taking it off the residential property tax
bill.
Supporters are invited to join today's protests, which run
until 5:30 p.m.

In response to last Fridays editor-

for tearing their uniforms in pub-
lic protests of Bill 84 while Ajax
firefighters didn't don their uni-
forms, our readers say:
♦'I agree AhAehcartcdly with your,_dilunal."
*Till a Toronto firefighter and 1 agree with the Pickering
firefighters. They've earned the right to wear their uni-
forms because they put their lives on the line for the citi-

Bill 84 puts

.in jeopardy
To the editor:
I .un wwiny this letter to express
my Concern over a piece ill legislation
put forth by the %like Ham, gok,crn-
ment, namely Bill >SJ, The Fire
Protection and Firc Pre%enuon Bill.
This hill make, chinge, that w ill jcup-
ardizc public ,alety and the fire protec-
tion that the public reties on.
A, a Citizen and a proud profession-
al firelighter for more thin 30 vicars. 1
am appalled at the government's lack
of Concern for public safety in the
province of Ontario. If this ACI is
passed, it will affect the responsc tunes
of firefighter, getting to emergencies
by allowing municipalities to under -
fall' fire stations and emergency %chi-
cles. Can you risk delay when lives are
,in the line:'
This hill allows part-time firefight-
ers with less experience and training to
replace full-time firefighters. It takes
four years to train a tint -Class fire-
fighter. Firefighting is a tough.
demanding jobs but it is only part of the
job.

"I think the fact that in the past six or
seven years we've won a number of
championships has caught the attention
of a number of people in the higher eche-

Although a number o[' details are yet to
be worked out, the Blue; Jays will send some
of their best baseball instructors to the camp.
There's also a chance some Blue Jays play-
ers may be on hand at the camp on their off
days, if they're available.
Blue Jays scouts will also be sizing up
some of the local baseball talent at the
two-week camp, notes Gummow.
The PBA will also host the S.U.
Baseball Camp at Dunmoore Park on the
first two weeks of July. This day camp is
for players 10 to 13 years old.
The PBA is also making a pitch to
host the All -Ontario Major Bantam
'AAA' All -Ontario Championships over
the Labor Day weekend. The best major
bantam teams in the province will be fea-
tured. Gummow says the association was
encouraged to apply to host the champi-

its bid has been successful.
The association is also looking to host

old elite baseball team to be formed by
