BY LINDA WHITE STAFF REPORTER For more than three years now, life has been "like a chapter out of Alice in Won- derland" for the parents and sisters of a teenager critically injured in a car accident. That's how lawyer Joe Pileggi describes the Arsenault family of Pickering, who have been riding an emotional roller coast- er since Nov. 2, 1993. That's when Jose Arsenault -- then a 16 -year-old student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School -- was thrown from a car driven by a friend on Hwy 2 near Fairport Road in Pickering. She suffered se%erc hrain damage and doctors say there', m, chance ft,r :oinpletc recovery. She nods her head occasionally and though Viola Arsenault is certain her daughter recognizes her, no one knows for sure. Jose was in a coma for three months fol- lowing the accident and has been to numer- ous hospitals, including Sunnybrook Health Science Centre and Bloorview Chil- dren's Hospital in Toronto, as well as Ajax - Pickering General Hospital. For the past year, Jose has been at the Lake Erie Institute of Rehabilitation (LEIR) in Erie, Pennsylvania. Before she went there. Jose spent nine days at home with her family. "it was tough, but we had nurses and got through it," recalls Mrs. Arsenault. " 1 was able to sit with Josd any time of day or night and hold her hand." Mrs. Arsenault was told Jos@ would stay at LEIR just five months, and though she's been told several times Jost would be sent back to Ontario, she doesn't know when that might happen. See INJURED/page 3 head injury Josd Arsenault was a well -adjusted high school student in Pickering when her life was unalterably changed in a car accident in 1993. LIS 2H5 . Pablisber: Tim Writtaker ♦ Editorial AIDS kit could help save lives Isn't it amazing how any parent would support educa- tion about the dangers of smoking. drinking or using drugs. but some parents see red f or blue) set hcn the issue of AIDS. HIVor any other sexually -transmitted disease comes up, Surely trying sex comes as naturally for most teenagers as does smoking. dnnking or any other No -called 'adult' behavior you can name. Yet some parents. whether it he under the guise of religious beliefs or otherwise. refuse to face the facts when it comes to the sexual bchavtor of their children and their children's peers. The issue became heated earlier this week when the Durham Board of Education spent three hours during a public debate haggling over five lines of an AIDS/HIV pamphlet prepared for the board. The pamphlet discusses the proper way to use a condom, among other things. Some parents hound the language in the pamphlet'crotic' or'Ixxnographic.' That certainly wasn't the intention of the pamphlet's author, board program superintendent Bey Freedman. who said. 'When I wrote this 1 was thinkinc about death and dying. The message is clear AIDS kill,." While parents wishes must always be respected by boards of education, they shouldn I be allowed to get in the way of the facts: the pamphlet a being prepared for Grade 1 I and 12 students whose average age IN 16 to IS. health statistics indicate 20 percent of this age group is sexually active, while at Icast halt have had sexual intercourse at least ome: and statistics showthat the ayYfagc age at which people contract HIV has dropped tram the early 30h a decade ago to the early 20s now. Common sense sug- gest, most of these students know a good deal more about sex than their parents would like to believe. Something must he dome to protect young people from this terrible disc ase. The most important argument made in the pamphlet is that ah%tiricnce Is the only surefire way oto prevent AIDS. Its the first -- and most Important - message young people can hear aN)ut this scourge. Its also n:uvc to expect its the only trieuiW they should he getting. ( 7..rvpmd rn ala.. rdUmr.J , u// /nom wurcr uI ntittsotsrct- rw; 7r4n and dwl 5109 ♦You said it... Clic guest column 'Racism hurts all of us' on Jan 22. 1997 reminded me of an inci- deni which happened to me a few months ago at a Pickering gasr .ation 1 went to get gas and noticed all the pumps were busy and. as 1 drove further. 1 nuticcd a fellow had parked his car in the middle of loth gas pumps. As a result, the other pump was not being used Since 1 was pressed for time. 1 decided to park a, close as I could without hitting that car and tried it) pump gas. As 1 drove closer. I saw a European white woman in her late 50, sitting in that car looking upset After getting out of my car 1 heard her yelling at me I walked up to her and asked her "H hat seems to be the pnohlcm?" She said I almost hit her car. I told her I had not hit her car and reminded her that her car was parked the wrung way. 1 tried to he courteous I came back to the gas pump and struggled to get some gas while she continued w yell at me. I looked at her and said. '*Be quiet."' She got out of her car, came up to me and said. "Go home and wash your face" as she dcmonstrat- ed face washing. "When you will look like this', pointing to her white skin color. "then talk to me." I could not believe she could use such strong racial comments and 1 realized racism may never diminish around us. This experience made me feel sat low. Roland Rutland wrote in his article racism is a disease and 1 agree with him. I'm a proud East Indian/Canadian. coming to Canada 24 years ago. I believe in manners and respect for each other and so should everyone around me. 1 know everyone is not a racist, but those who arc should he edu- cated. The transfer is expected to foe fin- ished this spring. Pickering-Alax Citizens Together (PACT) for the Environment endorsed the idea of cleaning up the Brock North Landfill Site. PACT did not endorse the moving of waste from that site to Brock West Landfill Site for technical, environmental and moral rea- sons. PACT had and still has concerns with the rationale of the method it) move Brock North Landfill garbage to the Brock West Landfill, however, the move is being made regard- less of our documented con- cerns. The intent from the concep- tual stages of Brock West Landfill was to tum the land over to the Metropolitan Toronto and Region Conservation Authority for recreational purposes when the landfill closed. The Brock West Landfill Site has closed and, as the landfill's licence and the agreement among the Ministry of Energy and Environment, Pickering and Metro to close the dump all state, the area should now be turned over to be landscaped and used for recre- ational purposes. Dave Steele, PXCT chairman PCs cleaning up mess of previous governments To the editor: I'm getting tired of this I-ory hashing due to the tinan- ,ial changes taking place. All rou hear is that it's the Tones' cult health care a being cut. is the Torics' fault social spending is being cut, it's the francs' fault the world is com- ing to an end. Get real, people. Two points: First, and let me emphasize this, they have no choice. There is no money to spend on these programs. They still are spending S8 billion a year more than they collect in taxes. They have a total debt load of SICK) billion and inter- est payments are nearly more than total spending on health care. With that fact, what would you do in their shoes? The same thing! Secondly, why are we in this predicament? Who should we really blame'? Well, it seems some have very short memories. I don't. I can still remember NDP finance minis- ter -Pink" Floyd Laughren standing in the legislature in 1990 and saying they will spend their way out of this recession. It was past, irre- sponsible, socialist govern- ments, right up to the federal level (they have a 5500 -billion debt) whose spending sprees have put us here today. It does not matter which political stripe is in power right now, be it Conservative, Liberal, or NDP. The current situation would be the same. Make no mistake people, if Bob Rae was still premier, he would be doing exactly the same things right now. Wake up people and stop crying. I'm being affected, too. Richard Wakefield, Pickering WILLIAM E. RAE , Guest Column A pro's tips on airing your beefs Have you ever written a letter to the editor'? The freedom to worship is not reserved exclusively for the clergy and the freedom to vote is not the sole prerogative of politicians, so why should professional journalists be the only individuals to exercise our free- dom of the press'? Thirty years ago. I became dissat- isfied with the excesses of big gov- ernment, but in addition to badgering my wife with my endless grumblings, I decided to put them on paper and send them to someone who's paid to listen — the editor of your local newspaper. 1 was not so naive or opti- mistic to believe that my letters would prompt any politicians to apply the brakes to our governments' increasing involvement in our lives. but at least I wanted to draw attention to the fact that brakes existed. If no one bothered to vote or write letters or attend meetings and get involved, and if we were all apathetic, then van- ity spending, corruption and tyranny would flourish completely unchecked Almost 14(x) of my letters, columns and articles have been print - cd in various publications. 1 have sent well over 3.(xx) letters in what rcprc- sents my tiny, modest attempt to at least partially balance what 1 believe is the left-leaning media blas. (Studies reveal that the letters to the editor feature is one of the most wide- ly read of every newspaper.) The News Advertiser Is an excel- lent publication — even unique in many ways — with more than the usual number of insightful arocle, and provocative columnists. However. 1 want to commend it for also includ- ing the views of the most essential person affected by this publication — and that is you. the reader. Short. neatly written letters have the best chance of being published. Surely. the editor has enough trouble trying to follow the logic contained in some form of the correspondence that is received without also being forced to decipher the handwriting. If you're sick and fired of vocal pressure groups and professional hand-out artists slurping at the public trough, be a member of the silent majority no longer. Vent your frustra- tion by writing a letter to the editor. It's cheaper than visiting a psychia- trist. But, perhaps this isn't your "cup of tea". We can criticize, but we can also try to contribute in some manner by making the communities of Ajax and Pickering a better and safer place to live. You would be amazed at the number of volunteers who try their best to -make a difference'...and they succeed. Neighborhood Watch is a self-help crime -prevention program to reduce threats to you and your neighbor's property during times when burglaries are likely to occur. If you have not developed this program in your area, contact your police. Block Parents is another excellent organization. Unfortunately, problems don't solve themselves. I would agree that we don't always have time to get involved in preventing crime, but criminals have all the time in the world. They also seem to receive more support than their victims. That sounds like another letter to the editor to me — a letter that is just waiting to be written ... by you! The News Advertiser invites readers to sub- mit columns for Be Our Guest on current issues facing our Darhatn Region comuuuin - ties.
