"The recent recommendations ... have struck fear into the hearts of all school board workers just before Christmas," says Charlotte Monardo, chairman of CUPE's committee. "We are desperately concerned that the Crombie recommendations could mean the loss of tens of thousands of jobs in the education sector." In Durham, CUPE represents 1,250 workers with the Durham Board of Education and 450 with the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board. They arc "worried because of the uncertainty" but the last thing they want to do is strike, says CUPE Local 218 president Coralee Bugden "We don't want to disturb the chil- dren," she says. "We don't want to strike. The province is "playing with lives. It's not just the 1,7(X) members of LUPE, it's the teachers. it's the students and their parents." Durham Board of Education chajr- man Ruth Ann Schedlich didn't know of LUPE threats until contacted by the News Advertiser. "I sympathize with them, I really do ... They're part of the school team," she says of non -teaching staff. A would hate to see their work outsourced and have some cleaning service come in at night, for instance." After a long year of cuts. Santa Claus Snobelen was in a giving mood this Christmas. But the Minister of Education has a problem on his hands in Durham Region. The local public board has seen a two per cent student growth rate over the past year. The separate board is battling to deal with a whop- ping fire per cont jump in enrolment. with more stu- dents coming into the system, there's a need for more funding and a mill rate increase, right:' Wrong. There's still some fat in the education syslem. espe- cially at the administration level. Is c%cry single Job necessary'' Can some jobs he combined with others:' We're not corn inced everything has been done to save dollars. On the plus side, the local separate board has taken the intttattse to save money by dropping Oshawa Transit passes for high school students in favor of private bus- ing. Yes the students will have fewer options (school buses only run at certain times to limited destinations. unlike Oshawa Transit) but the deal promises to save the board about $5OO.(X)O per year. Surcly there arc many other ways to save money. Could the boards share more services (secretaries. jani- tors, maintenance workers, equipment) as hospitals are doing to save even more money'' The education minister has a number of options open to him in anticipation of the 1998 budget year. There's been a suggestion that the province's 150 -plus school boards he dumped in favor of five super -boards province -wide. That would certainly save tens of millions of dollars and not just in trustees' salaries. Imagine going from 150 -plus superintendents of education to five. That's an immediate cut of close to $15 million. Following this logic throughout the whole process would lead to hundreds of millions of dollars in savings. It's one option for Mr. Snobelen to consider. Meanwhile, it should be possible for our local boards to reach the desired level of funding needed without lay- ing off teachers, and without raising taxes. We shouldn't expect school boards to eliminate them- selves, but the Province can do the job if it has a plan in place which won't hurt the only thing that really matters — the education of our students. respond to this editorial call Infosource at nfosoii. Three of them were best offers, while one was for 5700 firm. In September. I had one of these toys in my hand at K -Mart. It was $39.95. Since that ume they have become quite popular and are in high demand. However, in keeping with the true meaning of Christmas, I find this dis- gusting. More and more, you hear about toy and food drives to help needy fami- lies make ends meet over the holidays. Many non-profit agencies, fire halls, etc. are asking for new, unwrapped toys for those who are less fortunate and then you read ads for people trying to get rich on a child's toy. I hope when these people get what they want for these dolls they are going to be able to sleep peacefully with them- selves over the holidays. I know I wouldn't. Is this what Christmas has become? All of those charged — plus three who refused to provide breath sam- ples — immediately had their licences suspended for 90 days under new provincial legislation. RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) units set up last week in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington and Brock Township charged led to 11 motorists being charged with impaired driving. So far this year RIDE has laid 32 impaired driving charges — com- pared to just seven in the same peri- od last year — while regular police patrols charged another 30. Of the 27,215 vehicles checked, RIDE has also issued 12 -hour sus- pensions to 68 drivers who blew into the alcohol "warning" zone. But don't expect to see widespread use of all -girl classes, says board program superinten- dent Bev Freedman. "We are proceeding with the implementa- tion (of workshops for teachers stressing teach- ing techniques used in all -female classes) as opposed to an all -girls pilot at the elementary level," she says. Then it takes away the child. -- Informration poster AJAX — In many ways. Dylan Carr is a typical four- year-old: he's happy, he's independent and he fights with his older sister. But in one way. Dylan is ycn different. He suffers from Batten's Disease. a rare genetic disorder that leaves him with a lite expectancy of hetwren eight and 12 years. Batten's affects how brain cells store materials. Suffer- ers don't ha,,,c en/,,mes to break down the materials. caus- ing the brain cells to grow and break down. It's such a rare disease that "most of the medical pro- fession don't know amthmg about this." says Dylan's father. Clifl' Carr. "Our doctor didn't know am thing about this. Ihats not uncommon. A lot are misdiagnosed or undiagnosed." Four children in Ontario have tax: disease "that we know of'. says Dylan's mom. Sue Carr. Therc are more than 20 cases in Ncwf0undland. but no known cases in Quebec. For some reason. there's a large pocket in Finland. Mr. Carr says it's a "Scandin:ayian disease. It's where it's based. 'Ihere's an international efli)rt in research to identify the gene involved. Once that's done. they can wort: on treat- menLs and cure." There are tour types of Batten's Disease -- infantile. late infantile, juvenile and adult -- but onl\ the gene for juvenile Batten's has hecn identified. '-Ir. Carr notes. Vl'hen Dylan, who has late infantile Battcn's. began haying seizures. his parents thought he was suffering from epilepsy. recalls Dad. 'He was on three drugs. We tried fi%c. Dylan's balance will continue to worsen to the point he won't he able to walk. Although his eyesight's "OK" now, he'll eventually lose sight. And, while the tot will one day lose his intellect, he's now "intelligent", beams Mum. "He's sort of a little Rain \tan (like the lead character in the moyic about an autistic sa-vant played by Dustin Hoffman). He knows his upper and lower case letter`. and his colors. He has a great sense othunwr. He likes to he read to. He could do that all day." V1hen his intellect. his sight and his balance are ,one. "Vb'e 11 try to be as positive as we could be. There's no mir- acle cure until they find the gene." But, children with Batten's often succumb to a sec- ondan disease. such as pneumonia because their bodies can't take it anymore. Mrs. Carr says. Dylan still goes to nursery school and is involved in TRACK. in organization that helps disabled children ride horses. Esposito - and played in exhibition games against Cheevers. Parent, Dryden. The bottom line - none stood taller than Terry Sawchuk. As far as I'm concerned, Terry Sawchuk was the topper. If you don't believe me, listen to the incredible stats he racked up. Games plaved. 971: shutouts, 103: career goals against average was 2.52. That last stat is amazing since towards the end of his career, he played for some pretty stiff teams like the N.Y. Rangers and the L.A. Kings. Terry was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and got his first set of goalie equipment when his brother got sick and he was talked into wearing his brother's gear. He played two years in Omaha because very few rookies just walked into the league at that time. Players were taught their skills in the minors. He got his break when he was called up to replace Hall of Famer Harry Lumley. All he did was lead the league in shutouts with 1 I and win Rookie of the Year honors - ho hum! This guy was a player. His Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup three of the next four years. In the 1952 playoffs, he was truly unbelievable. Detroit swept the semis and the Cup finals with Terry tallying four shutouts giving up only five goals in eight games. He earned the Vezina Trophy in 1952, 1953 and 1955.
