Durham MDs urged to reject deal BY MARIANNE TAKACS STAFF REPORTER The local representative of the Ontario Medical Association is recommending doctors here reject the agreement reached last weekend between the Province and OMA on doctors' fees and related matters. "The agreement really doesn't address the funda- mental issue of underfunding of the health care sys- tem," says Dr. Romas Stas, who represents physicians in Durham Region, as well as doctors east of here to Napanee and north to the Haliburton area. "If we approve it it will give the impression to the public that everything is A -OK again -- which it isn't." Under the tentative deal inked last weekend, the clawback of doctors' fees would be reduced from 10 per cent to three per cent, the maximum amount doc- tors are allowed to bill OHIP would be increased sand new doctors who set up practices in over -serviced areas would receive reduced OHIP fees. "We should be working together. li' you can't, stay out of the room and leave it to us to make improvements," Ajax Councillor Roger Anderson said. "Amalgamation isn't ncccssarily the be all and end all. If we're dismantling the Region. I defy anyone to take our water and sewer and police and save money. It will cost you money." But. Oshawa Mayor Nancy Dia- mond dismissed Coun. Anderson's chargc. say Oshawa isn't capable of looking after services done by the Rasion is totally prcprr,,tcrous. We are capable of it and have done it in the Doctors to vote next month FROM PAGE I a "short-term Band-aid solution". He notes the agrccinent would onls cover the rest of the fiscal year which finish- es at the end of March, and that the $;.S billion the Pros ince is willmi-I to spend on OHIP billings has not txcn increased. The doctor says it appears the Province wants to ,irllply dish out the same size of OHIP pie by reducing the fee paid to doctors fur specific scr- Vices. Dr. Stas believes the statement made hN Hcalth Minister Dave John- son that some scr%ices might he dc - listed so that people would have to pay for them themselves is Just a "trial hal- kxm". Whether it will happen, he says. will depend on the public reaction to the idea. In any case, says Dr. Stas. the prop- er way for the government to deal with the health care funding crisis would he to consult the public. ' he cilizcns of the province should be allowed to decide what kind of' health care system theN want. I1 the public decides they're quite happy with a reduction in services, that's fine, we can continue in that fashion." If citizens don't want more hospital hed closures and longer waiting lists, then other options need to be l(x)ked at, according to the doctor. Those options might include more public funding, more private funding in the form of measures such as de - listing, or allowing a private health care system to coexist with the public one. What's not right, maintains Dr. Stas, is for these issues to be decided by the government unilaterally or with input only from doctors. The Coalition of Family Practition- crs of Ontario, of which Dr. Stas is a' member, is planning to hold 'town hall' meetings across Ontario in the new year. The goal, he says, is to get the pub- lic involved in the health care deci- sion-making process. He expects there will be at least one such meeting in Durham. Doctors across Ontario will vote on the new deal in January. Dr. Stas believes they are likely to reject it. - Gast," Mayer Diamond said. She also stated the city doesn't want to he part of the Region. "Oshawa Council was elected to represent the City of Oshawa and we will do that. Our council feels our citi- zens would be better served if Oshawa was out of the Region," Mayor Dia- mond noted. In September of 1995. Oshawa Council apprord a motion calling on the city to merge with Whithv and the Courtice arca of Clarmeton. "To simply say 'that's the way it's been for the last 22 years and the way it should bc' is doing a gross disservice to the taxpayers of this Region." she said. Whithy "\1ai\rrr`Ii,m I:dwards ripped Oshawa Council. saying it "came up with it plan for a neighboring commu- nity without discussing it with them." -I'bexe's no support in her cornmum- ty for merging with Oshawa. Claring- ton Mayor Diane Hamrc noted. A respect that Oshawa Council was elected to represent the citizens of" Oshawa. I respect that they don't want to he part of Durham Region. But. they weren't elected to represent the people of Clarington. Do you know the mean- ing of 'no'." We don't want any part of- it." fit." Mayor Hamrc said. But. white doves are a\ailahlc at S25 each or 550 a pair. Lisa suggested we to PJ. Pets at the Yorkdale Mall. %&rc we spoke to a line \sung lady who informed us they don't have any, turtle doves. Does it sound like it might be easier to find a Tickle Me Elmo than a turtle dove'! But they do have diamond doves. There's "not much" difference between the two, except the cost. A diamond dove comes in at $35 each, or $70 for a pair. For the record, we're going with the white doves. Cost of gift: $50. Running tonal: $151.99. DAY THREE A French hen. Mr. Koenig, God bless his soul, says a French hen is "a barn yard chick- en hen" and they go for two or three bucks each. "It's a regular brown hen. It's a French hen because it's from France. It isn't a particu- lar breed, that I'm aware of," Mark says. That's good enough for us. We'll take three regular, brown barn yard hens, and we'll keep the birds happy by separating ourselves of $9. No problem here, as we'll just slip over to Galbraith Jewellers in the Ajax Plaza and speak to the owner Donna Dickson. Donna says $140 will get us a "decent" 10 - karat woman's wedding band. For women thinking of following the 12 days, a I 0 -karat wedding ring for a man retails for about $160. "It's not a heavy band, but it's a band," Ms. Dickson says. If you really love him or her and want to get a 14 -karat ring, Ms. Dickson says add 40 per cent. That's $200 (we're rounding up) for a woman's ring and $225 for a man's. We're going for the 14 -karat ring. That's 1,000 clams. Cost of gift: $1,000. Running total: $1,39m DAY SIX DAY FOUR Bark to birds, so it's back to Mr. Koenig. DAY SEVEN What's a Christmas without seven swans honkin' away? Mr. Koenig says swans go fug around $100 each. These, by the way, are European swans. Mr. Koenig says for the same price we could get mute swans. 'They're the ones you're re probably interested in. Again, you won't have to get into permits." Cost of gift: $700. He knows his way around a cow.1 use to milk cows years and years ago, by hand." The minimum wage is $6.85 for adults, but with 1997 being an election year, Mc Johnson says he'd pay the maids $7 an hour. That's eight maids milking for an hour in the morn- ing and an hour in the evening, for a total of $112 a day. Cost of gifL- $112. Running total: 41 $,2,m99. The song can also be interpreted in a way that you'll have to give your to one 12 pear trees and 12 partridges, I I turtle doves; and so on. If that's the case, the total bill wig. run you $40,939.51 We don't want to throw you off now that you have everything, but 9you're going to need a place to store all these gifts. BIG SCREEN N AJAX yly St. W. 619-9881 I realty don't understand the NHL's thinking. I keep hearing about how they want to see their stars shine and then they put in a rule that they can't be protected. In the 70's, we took care of our own. Nobody took liberties because vie had "policemen" like TerryO'Reilly, Dave "The Hammer" Schultz and Dave Semenko to protect the stars. These days the stars are always hurt. Pat LaFontaine (broken jaw and knee) out last year, Steve Yzerman (knee, back and neck) post-Probert, Gretzky has had numerous ailments, Mario's back was so bad he had to take a year off. People pay big money to see Wayne, Stevie, and Mario. They should be protected. Now, I'm going to keep my promise and tell you about the time I thought Wayne's number had really come up, and it ties in with what I've been saying. Wayne was SO protected out there, he became careless when Semenko was around. Really, it was your life to touch him. So, one night I was doing color for Hockey Night in Canada with Bob Cole to Edmonton. I would tun down after the first to do Coach's Corner and, that night, I blasted Wayne for something. They started the second period and Wayne was reaching back for a pass while crossing the blueline, with his head down. Along came a Leaf named Bill McCreary, who caught him in the trolley tracks and knocked him out cold. I was hoping he wasn't dead because it would have looked bad since I'd just given him heck. Gretz survived, but Bill McCreary never played another shift in the NHL. Figure that out and try to explain it to people who believe there was never a rule in the NHL about not hitting Wayne. I often wonder what McCreary thought; he gets sent down for throwing the best check of his career. Life is funny. See ya', Grapes.
