Five times as many motorists

tie before hitting Durham roads
this holiday season over last —
despite tough new impaired dri-
ving penalties.

RIDE: (Reduce Impaired Driving
Everywhere) unit charged anoth-
er eight drivers with exceeding
the legal alcohol limit during its
second week of operation,
Sergeant Rick Bates reports.
That brings the number of
automatic 90 -day licence sus-
pensions — issued immediately
under new provincial legislation
— to 15 so far this year in
Durham.
In 1995, Durham's RIDE unit
stopped roughly the same num-
ber of vehicles over the two week
period but laid just three
impaired driving charges, Sgt.
Bates said.
Roadside spot-checks set up
in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby
Oshawa and Bowmanville Iasi
week flagged down 8,860 vehi-
cles. Of those, 132 drivers were
give breath tests, 22 of whom
had their licences revoked for
12 -hours after blowing into the

Regular patrol officers have
laid 10 impaired driving charges
in addition to the 15 motorists

they insist on a dog.
While the thought of an
adorable puppy licking their faces
Christmas morning is a nice one,
it's not fair for the animal, the
Oshawa & District Humane
Society advises.
"Christmas is a stressful time to
begin with," explains shelter
supervisor and veterinary techni-
cian Kathy Alston. "It's hard on an
animal to be adopted at that time
of year, especially if they're going

Significant improvements have
been made to the Province's emer-
gency plan for dealing with a seri-
ous accident at either the Pickering
or Darlington nuclear stations,
according to Durham Nuclear
Awareness.
But, the citizens' lobby group
on nuclear issues still has serious
concerns about the new emergency
strategy, which is at the draft stage
and won't be finalized until next
year.
DNA is particularly pleased
with the fact the new plan makes
provision for worst-case scenarios
not considered in the old one, such
as possible failure of the contain-
ment system designed to prevent
nuclear contaminants from escap-
ing into the atmosphere in the
event of a major accident at one of
the stations.
"We're very serious about say-
ing to the Province we really are
glad to see some of the changes to
the assumptions behind the plan,"
says DNA spokesman Irene Kock.
'17hat's very positive in our view."
She adds the assumption that
nuclear fallout would be contained
for at least several days before
being released in a controlled
manner is a "big hole" in the exist-
ing plan.
Two of DNA's major concerns
with the draft plan involve the size
of the zone for which emergency
plans are being drawn up and the
pre -distribution of potassium
iodide pills to protect the thyroid
gland from radiation exposure.
Both issues have been left open
pending a review by scientists due
many months ago, according to
Ms. Kock.
DNA would like to sec the
emergency cone cover all of urban
south Durham, while the review is
only looking at extending the
existing 10 -kilometre zone around
each local station to 13 km. M,,.

Local cabbies pack weapons in dangerous job

Driving a taxi cab in Ajax and
Pickering can be a frightening
experience for some drivers who
have begun carrying weapons with
them, but others don't worry too
much about what could happen.
Those are just some of the
comments expressed by taxi dri-
vers in an informal poll by the
News Advertiser in light of a
recent study out of the University
of Toronto which claims taxi dri-
vers are 20 times more likely to be
victimized on the job than other
Canadians.
The study focused on cabbies
from Vancouver, Winnipeg and
Halifax. Sixty per cent of the dri-
vers involved in the study said
they had been robbed or assaulted
at least once in the previous year.
Sixty-one per cent of cabbies
reported having customers jump
out of the taxi without paying their
fare, according to the study, which
also says relations between drivers
and police were rated 'mediocre,
bad or very bad'.
"Here in Pickering, things
aren't so bad;" says a dispatcher
and former taxi driver who doesn't
want his name published. "I know
people are scared driving at
night ... Drivers all carry weapons
of one sort or another."
The man believes relations
between taxi drivers and police are
"OK" but says "police are getting
called to stupid things, like fights
between drivers, sometimes from
the same company. I'm sure that
doesn't make them happy"
He believes cabbies must fol-
low their gut instincts while dri-
ving, especially at night. He
recalls getting a call to pick up two
men on the side of the road, but
says he drove past "because I had
a gut feeling that things just
weren't right.'
About an hour later, he heard
about a driver from another com-
pany who was held up at gunpoint
by two men fitting the description
of the men he passed.
"Things here are nowhere new
as' bad as they are in the city
(Toronto), though we've had a few
drivers roughed up and held up at

lems). It's part of the job. If some-
thing's going to happen, it's going
to happen. Just like you can't

Room for improvement
in nuclear emergency

left a 30 -km area around that nuclear plant
uninhabitable.
On the matter of the pills, the review is
only looking at distributing them to resi-
dents within three kilometres of
the stations, says Ms. Kock,
while DNA maintains they
should go to all residents in the
emergency zone. She adds, how-
ever, that pre -distribution in the
three -kilometre zone would be
"a good start".
Another major issue for DNA
is the provision for alerting the
public after a nuclear accident.
The draft plan states each station
must have a system in place to
inform area residents of a major
accident within 15 minutes after
it occurs. Ms. Kock describes that target as
"not bad", but notes there are no time lim-
its mentioned for the rest of the emergency
zone and no specifics on how the notifica-
tion will be done- It appears the method of
notification has been left to local authori-
ties.
Under previous plans, first notifications
were done by police driving around with
"loud -hailers", and subsequent notifica-
tion methods included a computerized
phone -calling system that performed poor-
ly in a major test of the existing Durham
plan in 1995.
"It's probably important for that to be
ruled by the Province because it's been
such a difficult thing to solve. It appears
they just don't have a good answer."
Other concerns about the draft plan out-
lined in a letter from DNA to
Emergency Measures Ontario:
❑ The plan does not deal with
long-term rehabilitation of peo-
ple after a severe accident
because that would not be under
provincial jurisdiction.
J It triples the allowable dose of
radiation to the thyroid gland
without explaining why in any
detail.
❑ In the scenario under which
local food and drinking water
might be contaminated on a
large scale, the plan suggests
cost/benefit analysis be applied to deci-
sions on control of food and water. DNA's
letter states a policy should be established
to protect public health and that the orga-
nization has "noted with great horror the
relaxing of radiation standards for contam-
inated foods in parts of Europe and the for-
mer Soviet Union following the Chernobyl
accident"

ty of Multi -reactor accidents or dual -site
failures which could occur in an event

Think twice
Unconditional love. The patter of tiny feet on the floor.
Loving kisses on your face.
There can be no better gift under the tree Christmas
morning than a living, breathing puppy dog, right"
Wrong. according to Humane Society representatives
here at home.
Christmas, in fact, is one of the worst times of the year to
bring a pet home, the}' say.
So, the Humane Society is asking families to consider
giving living gifts after a time of reflection, to determine if
the recipient can indeed properly take on the responsibility
of owning a pet.
And it is a substantial responsibility. New pets need
attention and training. They need proper nutrition. The,.
need exercise. They need loving care.
In the frantic rush of the Christmas season -- visiting rel-
atives far and wide, preparing meals. opening gifts. shop-
ping -- pets are often overlooked once the blush of that first
morning kiss wears off
If you're considering a puppy or a kitten as a gift, take the
good advice offered by the Humane Society: Give a picture
of a pet to the intended recipient to gauge whether it's the
right gift for that person.
The pet will still be there after the Christmas rush. and
delaying the decision can work out best both for your fami-
ly and the animal you've chosen.
But before you head out to your local animal shelter,
reflect on your decision. will the animal receive the care it
needs` Is the pet owner going to be committed to this ani-
mal'? Can the required costs of care be met? Will the animal
be treated fairly and get the proper nutrition and exercise'
All of these are important considerations. Take time.
Think about it. Then decide.

Nobody hurt in $60,000 Aja bre
AJAX — Nobody was injured in a Friday
evening fire that caused about $60,000 damage to
a home on Coe Drive.
Ajax Fire Department spokesman Thom
Evered says the blaze was mainly contained to
the garage of the north Ajax home, but there was
some damage in the dwelling.
Neighbors who spotted smoke coming from
the garage called 911 and 10 firefighters were
dispatched to the blaze.
The family of four was out at the tinge and
there were no vehicles in the garage.
The fire was still under investigation on
Monday.
Bandits get cash, lotto tickets
in armed heist at Ajax gas bar
AJAX — Two balaclava -clad bandits made
off with cash and lottery tickets in a gunpoint
robbery at a gas bar here early Sunday.
Durham Regional Police said one of the rob-
bers was carry*.ng a long -barrelled handgun when
they entered the kiosk at the Esso station at
Harwood Avenue and Hwy. 2 just before 3:30
a.m. and demanded money.
The thieves fled on foot after being given a
small amount of cash and about $300 in lottery
tickets.
Both bandits wore black balaclavas, while one
had on a blue and grey jacket and the other a
green and grey jacket.
No one was injured.
Police continue their investigation.

hamsters.
"We had a man who wanted to get a
dog so his kids could see the miracle
of birth;' recalls Ms. Alston. "But he
didn't know w hat he was going to do
with the puppies and said he would
cross that bridge when he came to it.
That's not good enough for us. That's
one of the reasons we have so many
dogs here, because people don't know
what to do with them.-

Honda enters SUV market with dynamic CR -V

automakers are only too willing to

The latest entrant into the segment is
3onda, whose CR -V will have to do bat -
le for a share of the market with the likes
AToyota, Suiuki. Geo and Jeep.
The SUV market is swollen with
choices and Honda has decided, perhaps
correctly so, not to go head-to-head with
the full-size sport-utes on the market.
Morc likely is the automaker has realized
it will be better able to capitalize on the
popularity of this type of vehicle with it
delivers a sport-ute that not only people
can aspire to own. but one they can
afford. You should be able to get into a
CR -V for less than S25,0(>n.
The CR -V is powered by a 2.0-11tre
DOHC four cylinder rated at 130 horse-
power. The Honda sport-ute will come
in front -drive or full-time four-wheel
drive configurations. It will also offer a
full complement of comfort and conve-
nience features like air conditioning.
Gower windows and door locks, cruise
control, four -speaker stereo and standard
column -shifted automatic transmission.
Safetv features and ergonomic extras
include everything from the optional
anti-lock braking system to a fold -out
picnic table.
Honda took its time entering the sport -
utility market. While some could argue
that the automaker will now have an even
tougher battle to gain a share in this very
competitive market. it is more likely
Honda's careful planning has delivered a
vehicle that should be able to please a
wider variety of consumers on a wider
range of budgets. •

Saturn has mar-

wasn't until

:o tag along on their second Drive -In Reunion last
September and we were part of a convoy of Saturns
heading north on Highway 115. that we noticed what the
slogan means to Saturn owners.
On a miserable, rainy fall evening. hundreds of Saturn
owners joined in the convoy to watch a movie at a
Peterborough drive-in and, perhaps, convey the spirit of
Saturn.

For 1997. Saturn maintains its strong "family her-
itage'" attributes with a reliable line of sedans and wag-
ons and tweaks its fun -to -drive sportiness with a new
generation sports coupe.
The constant for Saturns in 1997 is the ding-, dent -
and rust -resistant recyclable polymer door and side pan-
els. fenders and fascias. The hood. root' and decklid and
made of steel.
From the outside. ever, centimetre of the coupe has
received updating. The mol'panel, for instance, now has
a slight upward lip that deflects rainwater away from
open windows and doors and both front and rear lights
receive new treatments.
The new SC 1 and SC2
coupes now share wheel-
base dimensions and
underbody structure with
its sedan and wagon sib-
lings. This affords occu-
pants of the sporty coupes
with more interior room.
Head room goes up by 27
millimetres (l inch) in
front and 18 mm (0.7 inch-
es) at the rear. The front
seat track has been moved
rearward by 22 mm (0.9
inches) for increased
legroom.
Two engines drive the
coupes — the SC 1 gets the
1.9 -litre, four -cylinder,
100 -horsepower, SOHC
driver, while a DOHC
putting out 124 ponies
beats at the heart of the
SC2.
Worthy of note is
Saturn's traction control
system which comes with
all models equipped with
anti-lock brakes. The full-
time system is automati-
cally engaged when the car
is started, but can manually
shutoff if the driver so
desires.
The family of cars is
also very affordable. The
sedans start at just under
$14,000, the wagons go
from approximately
$15,600 and the all-new
sporty coupes range from
$16,000. Best of all,
Saturns are extremely reli-
able and rank near the top
of most customer -satisfac-
tion surveys. a

model having an impressive list of stan-
dard features. The GL and GLS offer
standards like dual airbags, air condition-
ing. cassette stereo system. 60/40 fold
down rear seat and speed -sensitive power
steering. Optional upgrades include
leather, alloy wheels and ABS.
Pricing starts at $16.995 for the base
model with manual transmission and
ranges up to $23.095 for the GLS trim. •

Chrysler offers two versions of the
Sebring, the base LX and the more
fully -equipped LXi. The LX model I
comes standard with a 2.0 -litre 1
DOHC four -cylinder engine rated at
140 horsepower. Stepping up to the
LXi gets you a 2.5 -litre SOHO 24- 1
valve V6 with 163 horsepower on
tap. more than enough to sling
around Sebring's 1,500 -kilogram
hulking profile. Unfortunately, for
those who like to row the gears, no
manual transmission is available with
the V6. The 2.5 Is optional on the LX
and includes 16 -inch wheels (stan-
dard are 14-inchers). Sebring sits
atop a fully -independent double -
wishbone suspension and has speed -
sensitive steering. Four-wheel disc
brakes are standard with the 2.5
engine. The LXi's performance
att ibutes are man), with standard
.New -for -1997 17 -inch alloy wheels,
stiffer suspension with rear anti -sway
bar, and short sidewall tires for better
handling. The loaded LXi options
sheet includes leather seats, Infinity
CD stereo. power sunroof and power
driver's seat.
We should all be pretty familiar
with Chrysler's cab -forward originals
by now. So, there's no need to
expound on the ample proportions of
cars like the Chrysler Concorde.
For 1997, however, the 161 -horse-
power V6 is discontinued and the
214 -horsepower 3.5 -litre SOHC V6
is made standard in both the
Concorde's LX and LXi models.
The big Concorde offers a full -
plate of luxury appointments at a
price that will make you think you're
buying something much less.
O.K. We said we wouldn't do it.
but for the benefit of those who have
been asleep for the past half decade,
we will explain that Concorde is the
backbone of the LH platform that
coined the phrase "cab -forward:' In
this alignment, wheels are placed far-
ther from the center of the vehicle
which creates better handling, ride,
visibility, roomier interior and a mus-
cular, aggressive stance.
Both Concorde models offer a
long list of standard features, but
time has decreased the feature gap
between them — and small base -
price difference. Chief differences
between the two models include
standard ABS, aluminum wheels,
overhead console, climate control
and keyless remote entry system on
the LXi.
Completing Chrysler's triple play
of winners is the Intrepid — avail-
able in base, Sport and ES models.
A look at the base Dodge Intrepid
may show a car that is a little wide
on the bottom, a little slow on the
draw. But, doll it up with a new Sport
Package that includes the 214 -horse-
power 3.5 -litre SOHC V6, a manual-
ly -shifted automatic transmission
called Autostick, eight -way power
driver's seat and a splash of leather
and you have the makings of a very
desirable car. go fast.
But you want more. Well, consid-
er the sassy ES model which gets the
same 3.5 -litre V6 engine as the sport

European flair
The newest member of the Cadillac
family may also be introducing a new
category of luxury for North
America's prestige luxury sedans.
The brand new Catera breaks tradi-
tion of past Cadillacs as it is built in
Germany alongside the Opel Omega
MV6. It also displays General Motors
global strategy, using components
from GM suppliers in Germany,
Britain and France as well as those in
North America.
With the Catera. Cadillac has tar-
geted upscale -import buyers in their
mid-30s to late -40s. This target group
is not only younger than traditional
Cadillac huycrs, but is comprised of
drivers who want the spirited driving
experience of European sports sedans
and also desire the comfort and
ergonomics of North American luxury
cars.
Like traditional Cadillacs, power is
applied to the Catera's rear wheels by
a 3.0 -litre DOHC Vfi putting out 2(X)
horsepower. A four -speed automatic
is the only transmission available.
The engineering team has created a
car that is responsive during accclera-
tion and offers stable handling in slip-
pery road conditions. Speed -sensitive
steering makes for case of handling.
Safety features include traction
control, four-wheel ABS and dual
airbags, with door airbags coming
mid -year.
The Catera is not short on luxury
features and comes loaded with
items like power windows with an
express up/down mode on all four
windows, dual -zone climate control,
filtered ventilation system and heat-
ed power outside mirrors and wind-
shield -washer nozzles. The rear seats
fold forward in three sections, pro-
viding many combinations of pas-
sengers and their cargo. North
American convenience features
include keyless entry and heated
front and rear seats.
The new Catera is quite an attrac-
tive car. it also is the hest of both
worlds. Now, Canadian motorists can
enjoy the European sports sedan dri-
ving experience and North American
comfort and convenience in one
Cadillac that is considered "entry-
level" in price (S42,2(X)).

The countdown to Christmas is on and you're about to hit the
shopping centre.
But before you head out the door, make sure you've
made a list of who you're buying for, what you're
looking for and how much you have to spend. ;
And use cash -- not credit cards -- if at all
possible.
Follow those tips and you're less likely to -
overspend than if you shop without a plan.
advises Credit Counselling of Durham
Region executive director Sandra Sherk.
"if you shop with cash, there's less ten -
deny to overspend," explains Ms. Sherk.
"It' you use credit cards, spending $5 or S 10
more per gift doesn't seem like much at the
time. But if you're using cash, you have to
stick to your budget or you won't be able
to buy everything on your list."

PICKERING — The first Ajax -Pickering
News Advertiser/Roval Bank Financial Group at
the Ridge senior boys' basketball tournament
shaped into a battle of Durham and a battle of
Scarborough.
The tournament, hosted by Pine Ridge
Secondary School, featured eight of the top senior
boys' hoops squads in the Greater Toronto Area.
The event got under way last Thursday and ended
with the consolation game and the championship
contest Saturday afternoon.
The championship tilt was an all -Scarborough
affair with the Cedarbrae Collegiate Colts taking
on pre -tourna-
ment favorites
lured two Durham teams — the Henry Street
Hawks from Whitby and the Eastdale Collegiate
Eagles of Oshawa. It was no contest as Eastdale
posted a 78-63 victory.
Eastdale ruled the boards at both ends of the
court. piling up 24 defensive rebounds and 14 on
offence. The Hawks were without their big man
Chris Smith for the final.
Eastdale coach John Pfeifer says his team's
domination of the boards was the main factor in
the consolation final victory.
"We rebounded really well. We dominated in
that aspect of our game. And. when we get the
fast break working... that was also a big part of our
game:' says Ptiefer.

which played better as a team. We've been work-
ing extremely hard in practice and we executed
extremely well. The ball went to the right player
at the right time. We attacked them in the second
half and we moved the ball and players around
