A J P Heroic Ajax teacher saves woman from subway train suicide attempt `Maybe I made a difference' BY LINDA WHITE __S I AFY REIAORIER AJAX — An Ajax high school teacher who jumped in front of an approaching subway train to rescue a sui- cidal woman "didn't have time to think" about her heroic efforts and is "just glad" she was there. "It happened so fast:" recalls Archbishop Denis O'Connor Catholic High School teacher Christine Clayton, 31. She was on her way to a course at the Uni- versity of Toronto around 4:45 p.m. Monday when she rushed down the stairs at the Toronto Transit Com- mission's Sheppard subway station because she heard a train arriving. "The woman was at the top of the platform when she jumped onto the tracks:' says Miss Clay- ton. "At first, I thought maybe she had dropped something. But she was facing the train, standing there frozen with her arms spread wide open. She looked like a stat- ue. Miss Clayton, who works out almost daily, jumped onto the tracks and pulled the woman to the side, where two men lifted her hack onto the platform. The men then helped Miss Clayton to safety. "I didn't really think about what had happened until a man fat the subway station) told me he'd never forget how quickly I react- ed. "1 certainly found out something about myself;' continues Miss Clayton, Christine Clayton who teaches math and science and has also taught physical educa- tion. " If someone had asked me what I would do in a situation like that, I don't know if I would have known the answer. Now I know. If I hadn't done anything, I would have wondered for the rest of my life if I could have been able to help:' Though Miss Clayton didn't have a chance to speak to the woman she res- cued — who was sobbing and taken away by TTC officials — she "felt this bond with her. " I feel really good for her. I hope she realizes there are people willing to help. Future is Rs Residents in Ajax and Pickering will be given gentle reminders this week and next that it's time once again to turn your attention to Mother Nature. Waste Reduction Week runs from Nov. 4-10 and serves to help nudge our awareness (even though we've made great strides in the last decade) about the fragile nature of our environment. This year, as always, we are reminded of the so- called '3Rs' -- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. There is plenty we can take individual responsibility for and reduce the amount of landfill garbage we put out at our curbs each week. That's reduction. Other little things, like donating used household items to needy charitable causes, keeping plastic bags for use in the home or passing along an old paperback book to a reading club, can give new life to old things. That's reusing. There arc well-established curbside recyling pro- grams which return glass. plastic and paper to their source so they can become new products again. That's recycling. Collectively, each little thing we do adds up to a huge Jiversion of waste from our landfill sites. These components are vitally important to our future --and that of our children -- and will help us preserve our sensitive environment. Waste Reduction Week is one week in 52 in which we are reminded of the importance of responsible waste management. NVe must, however, put common sense to good use throughout the year if we are ever to succeed in finally leaving our 'disposable society' behind. Reduce, reuse and recycle each and every day, and we'll get there. You'll feel good, your children will thank you and Mother Nature will ultimately be given some room to breathe a little easier. Mother Nature, in all her fickle glory, must be nur- tured to survive. What have you done for her lately? We asked0 : Do you agree with the 'D' grade given to the federal Liberals by a research think tank? -- asked at the Ajax Plant ♦ Letters to the editor How can we trust teachers to educate? To the editor: It made me very angry to read in the News Advertiser's &t. 23 edition about the teachers from Durham Region hiring 40 buses for the Days of Action protest. I just finished reading the Communist Party's October newsletter in which they tinted of overthrowing the Mike Harris goverlment with the help of union leaders during the Oct. 25 and 26 protest. Teachers should know we can only bor- row so much. Even Bob Rae knew that, and when he tried to explain that to his NDP colleagues, Canadian Labor Congress head Bob White said, -Why don't you just declare Ontario bankrupt?" thinking that would solve our colossi debt. It was interesting to learn Rogers Cable had a phone-in poll to see how many were for or against the protest march. Thirty per cent of callers supported the protest; 70 per cent were against it — nearly the same per- centage who voted Harris to power. J In response to last Friday's editorial `Plain Wrong' regarding a mother's dispute with a princi- pal over dropping her child off early at school, our readers said: ♦ "I'm a bit upset about it. This is a bit ridiculous. She must realize how many other parents face the very same dilemma... Schools are responsible for children all day long. That's enough." ♦ "I, too, work in a school... This will save countless thousands of dollars in interest. Consolidate your loans and credit cards into a second mortgage or one large loan payment. remember to keep one credit card for emergency purposes. This is also required to keep your credit rating active on your credit bureau. NOVEMBER 1,19%...... . Pickering M . useum Village lucks out on building donation PICKERING — It's not very often you get for free something you've really wanted for a long time, but that's exactly what's happening for Pickering Museum Village. The museum is the lucky recipient of an early -19th -century log house Safe communities focus of meeting of Board of Trade AJAX-PICKERING — Safe and healthy communities is the focus of an upcoming Ajax - Pickering Board of Trade meet- ing. Guest speaker Michael Abromeit, district manager of the Industrial Accident Prevention Association, will discuss Establishing Safe & Healthy Communities in Ontario. The presentation is aimed at industry and community represen- tatives, who are encouraged to work together on injury preven- tion strategies. The meeting will be held Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 a.m. at Regalis Fine Restaurant, Pickering Parkway and Liverpool Road, Pickering. Cost is $15 for Board of Trade members and $20 for others. Call 837-6638 for more infor- mation. slated for demolition before its true historical value was discovered under a layer of siding which had been placed on the outside. 'Puterbaugh House', as the building is known, is currently located in Maple and has been donated to the museum by the family whose members lived in it for many generations. The family is even paying for the transportation of the structure to the museum, which is expected to cost about $3,500. Pickering Museum Village plans to use the house to reproduce an 1830s - style school. ..The building will be a real asset for us," says Sharon Milton, program superintendent at Pickering Museum Village. "We're really pleased it's coming. It's a true 1800s log house and will really fit into the village here." Ms. Milton notes the museum's advisory committee has had a long- standing plan to add a school to the. village. The intention now is for the committee to raise whatever money is necessary to get the building into oper- ating condition, so there will be no cost to taxpayers. Some structural work may be required and a second storey built on to the original 20 -by - 24 -foot log home may be removed. The siding which has been placed over the logs will be taken off. Ms. Milton believes the new build- ing will be a real asset to the muse- um's education program. "We are really hoping it's ready for the school program in some form next fall." ..................... .... ..
