The driver of the Bon- neville slowed down in an attempt to avoid a collision, police report. Three occupants of that car — all from Oshawa — also suffered minor injuries. Jennifer was reported missing to Durham Regional Police on Sept. 30. Police issued a press release con- cerning Jennifer's disappear- ance Thursday. "Foul play doesn't appear to be an issue at this time,,. reports Detective Nick Lisi. Jennifer's driver's licence and birth certificate were found on the road at Dundas and Parliament streets in Toronto on Oct. 7. But because "a lot of young peo- ple don't call police when their identification is lost.' its discovery hasn't raised any red flags, according to Det. Lisi. More of a concent to her parents is why she didn't pack her belongings in either of the two suitcases she left at her apartment. They're also wor- ried she has little money to make it on her own for long. Jennifer has disappeared once before, though it was only for a couple of days, says her mother. This weekend will be par- ticularly difficult for Jen- nifer's family, as they tradi- tionally celebrate her birth- day, along with an aunt's birthday and "fhanksgiving, at her grandmother's house in Scarborough. Jennifer is 5'8", about 250 pounds, and has blue eyes and short brown hair. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call police at 579-1520, ext. 2448. Myron J. Gordon, professor of finance emeritus at the University of Toronto, says in an analysis for the association which represents Hydro managerial workers that turning nuclear facilities such as Picker- ing's into Crown corporations would leave would suffer z + THE NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 199G -PAGES as Crown professor cor orations: p them unable to cope in a competitive mar- ket. "It is well known that Crown corpora- tions are less able than private corpora- tions to employ the various instruments of price competition. They would be handi- capped further by the ability of foreign companies operating here or in the United States to use the FTA/NAFTA (free trade agreements) to their advantage." The Macdonald committee on competi- tion in Ontario's electricity system recom- mended Hydro's monopoly over power generation and transmission be ended, and that some of its assets be privatized to introduce competition in the industry. However, Ontario Hydro's nuclear sta- tions, including Pickering's. and its hydro- electric facilities at Niagara Falls would remain under public ownership and oper- ate as Crown corporations. Vr (1,,riOn maintain. that under the existing situation the Province will proba- bly be able to recover the $10.5 billion it has invested in nuclear stations but that under the Macdonald scenario the safety and viability of the stations would be com- promised. "It is quite likely that a fractured, demoralized, confused and handicapped Crown nuclear corporation would operate at a loss. In order to reduce the loss, cut- backs in operating costs, of which mainte- nance and repairs are the largest compo- nent, would be demanded. The cutbacks would also make safe operations of the plants more difficult. As nuclear units are shut down prematurely, the funds needed to repair and return them to service would not be there, and it would appear increas- ingly attractive to shut down all the nuclear generators. What remains of their $10.5 billion in debt would then be trans- ferred to the Province." On the issue of the future of Ontario Hydro as a whole, Mr. Gordon maintains the way it's currently set up provides "a financial bonanza for the people of Ontario of enormous proportions". He says there appears to be little to gain and much to lose from the privatization sce- narios offered so far. The professor notes that the "enormous profits" Ontario could reap under the existing system are threatened by the problems at nuclear stations and which could force the shutdown of a large frac- tion of nuclear capacity. "Clearly, the highest priority for Ontario Hydro's management should not be grandiose schemes for privatization and competition, but the efficient management of its nuclear stations." Petrol Backbench MPs on Parliament Hill are claiming victo- ry this week following their unanimous vote to advance a private member's bill which would force oil companies to give you notice of price increases at your local gas station. The bill, introduced by Durham area Liberal MP Dan McTeague, was originally rejected by a committee of Ottawa MPs who choose which private members' bills are allowed to proceed. But Mr. McTeague convinced Parliament Hill politicians to overrule the committee, set- ting the stage for second reading of the proposed legisla- tion. Its origins may be based on the beliefs of one Durham MP, but the effects of the legislation, if passed in the House of Commons, will touch consumers across the country. N'e believe the hill has solid support on the street. Price -weary, consumers should be provided reasonable jus- tification for sudden and now unexplained increases at the gas pump. Who among us has not seen prices jump by six or eight cents per litre on man} a Thursday before a holiday week- end? W'ho among us has not cynically watched prices jump uniformly throughout the Greater Toronto Area'? Mr. McTeague goes so far as to suggest that when all taxes, costs and a "reasonable" profit are considered, gas should cost consumers about 48 cents per litre today. The actual cost per litre, however, is perhaps less rele- vant than the appearance of collusion among the oil com- panies when prices jump in tandem at one station and then a competing gas bar. This bill will bring a measure of accountability and possibly some relief for consumers. It's time explanations are made. It's time the oil compa- nies are forced to justify increases which sometimes top 10 or even 12 per cent. It doesn't make any sense to me." ♦ Letters to the editor More police, better youth facilities needed in Pickering To the editor: The Sept. 24 meeting at the Pickering Civic Complex on park van- dalism in our town revealed many things about our community: 1) The fact that there was standing room only indicates people care about the problem and want to address it. 2) The not -so -slick presentation of a video surveillance system shows politi- cians and hucksters are closely related. 3) The negative gallery response after the not -so -slick presentation shows you can't fool all of the people all of the time. This is not a new problem. It was addressed by�council and staff a short while ago. Much time, dollars and effort were spent on a survey that we never saw the results of. A task force will do nothing but fur- ther cloud the issue. Our tax dollars need to be directed toward better policing (by hiring more officers) and better lower cost facilities for our youth. Respite Services, based in Ajax, has received a federal grant to fund the Mentor - ship Project. Unemployed young adults will work with families whose children have disorders such as Attention Deficit Disorder and Tourette's Syndrome. Mr. Smith was one of 134 Ontarians to receive a Heritage Community Recognition Program award acknowledging local achievements in her- itage conservation. The award is given by the Ontario Heritage Foundation to nominees whose names were sub- mitted by a municipality. Mr. Smith's name was put forward by the Ajax Historical Board. "I was quite surprised actually," Mr. Smith says. "I wasn't expecting anything of that nature. I was also quite pleased. It's quite an honor to be nomi- nated. " The nomination submission on Mr. Smith notes. "In recording the history of Ajax for future generations. Mr. Smith has helped to preserve the heritage of a unique Canadian community. "His comprehensive documentation of Ajax history enables residents and other Canadians to understand the Town's important contribution to the (Second World) war effort. Ken's writing con- tributes to Ajax's strong community spirit." Mr. Smith wrote Ajax: The War Year,, and was a contributor to A Town Called Alax. which was published recently by the histoncal tx)ard. The heritage award "as matnh fk r War Years, a 200 -page book Mr. Smith published in 1989. The book chronicles the development of Defence Industries Limited, a munitions factory established in 1939. "Somebody had to write it. The (story of the) Town and DIL are too outstanding, too unique not to be recorded. I thought about it for many years before I got around to writing it," Mr. Smith says. He wanted 1,000 copies printed, but ended up with 1.080. The book sold out within two years. Mr. Smith notes. He moved to Ajax in 1942 to work at DIL. After the Second World War. he operated a construction company, served as a councillor on the first Town council and was mayor in 1956 and '57. After leaving council, Mr. Smith served as chairman of the Committee of Adjustments for several vears and also as the chairman of the for- mer Court of Revision and the Assessment Review Board. He's a member and past -president of the Ajax Rotary Club. Each recipient receives a certificate and a pin from the foundation. "We predict it's an idea that's going to catch on and people will applaud us for it. Rhea Dummett, 18, who's in her OAC year at Archbishop Denis O'Con- nor Catholic High School, earned a scholarship for the summer program from July 7 to Aug. 10 at Berklee Col- lege of Music in Boston. A gifted soprano, Dummett sings in DO'C's Vocaleeze chamber choir and the concert choir. She had to shift gears to adjust from !ger classical studies at DO'C to her :nurses at Berklee, which boasts such !'amous graduates as Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock. "It was a total change for me i-)ccause here we mainly focus on clas- sical music and music that is not as :ontemporary. There, we were singing songs we had heard on the radio and we focussed on the jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. It was great. It was an incredible change." Dummett earned her way to Berklee when her solo performance at the Ontario Vocal Festival at Mayfield Secondary School in Brampton last March paved the way for a $750 schol- arship to the college. While at Berklee, she spent a whirl- wind month receiving private vocal lessons from teacher Gwen Leathers and singing in three ensembles and the 100 -member gospel choir at the col- lege. In addition, there were classes on musical theory, musicianship, song - writing, sight-reading and repertoire, as well as labs on all sorts of musical styles including jazz, rhythm and blues, pop, fusion and rock 'n' roll. The highlight during her stint at Berklee was the final concert on Aug. 8. Featuring all the students in the school's summer program, the show was staged at the Berklee Performance Centre, a hall akin to Toronto's O'Keefe Centre. A had a little solo, but I felt like a star," recalls Dummett. "Every ensem- ble had a band, and I had never sung with a band before. And, there were so many people there." Dummett says that while she attended Berklec she learned how to express herself through music. "The main things I learned were performing and expressing myself on stage. Before, I was laid back and I was afraid to do what I wanted to do. If I feel a certain way about the music, then I'm going to show it." But, the best news came after the final concert when Dummett learned she'd been awarded a full scholarship to Berklee for $5.000 a year for four years, beginning next September. "I felt pretty special. That night I was so surprised. I was really happy." she says. Dummett credits DO'C music teachers Mel Clarke and John Kraus for supporting her efforts to attend Berklee's summer program. She also received financial support from the Ajax Rotary Club, the students' coun- cil, the school PTA and an anonymous donor to help defray her expenses. The main roles in The Three Bears include Goldilocks, played by Maggy White, and Robin, played by Amanda Sloan. The bears are granted the power to sing and speak by the Queen of the Fairies. The circus owner, The Baron, portrayed by Andrew Wright, hears them and decides they should belong to him. He hatches a plan to kid- nap them using an unlikely pair of henchmen, played by Derek Genova and Phil Hill. Peter Bon-Ghannam, a new member of the Pick- ering Players who acted in the troupe's production of Bus Stop, plays the role of the Dame.
