""Rhe increased resources and stats- and financing give me a lot of confidence we can achieve the improvements we need:' says plant director Ken Talbot. The station has already taken in an additional 150 workers since the spring and will get 200 more in the year to come, to bring the staff complement up to about 2,800. As well, the 1996 oper- ating budget has been increased by $25 million to $300 million, and will go up to $305 million in 1997. Mr. Talbot says the money will be used for "a whole range of things", including the addi- tional staff, facility improve- ment, fixing equipment and increasing training. The additional expendi- tures maN or may not impress the Atomic Energy Control Board, before which Mr. Tal- bot and Ontario Hydro offi- cials appeared last week to discuss renewal of the Picker- ing station's operating licence, which expires at the end of Decemher. Only a six-month licence renewal has been recom- mended by AECB staff. though Ontario Hydro applied for a two-year renew- al for the facility. AECB staff stated in their licensing report that insufficient progress has been made in implementing improvements at the Picker- ing plant to warrant a longer licence. AECB staff cited a series of safety-related events, failure on several occasions to follow prescribed safety pro- cedures, damaged equipment, poor maintenance practices and shoddy housekeeping. Ajax resident Warren Sun, 13, donated two airline tickets to Nancy Benson, 27, who is dying of cervical cancer. She will take her daughter Akaysha on the trip. %ti'arren decided to donate the tickets after reading about Nancy's plight in the News Advertiser last week. She and her sister, Janet Benson of Oshawa, had appealed to the public for help. "I decided to donate the tickets because 1 felt every little girl should go to Disney World and meet Mickey Mouse;" he says. Warren, who sutlers from spina bifida, is the Ontario Easter Seal Society's Timmy, and received the tickets at a golf tournament. The hockey fan was planning to use the tickets to visit Switzerland or Swcden. " I felt really glad because there's not very many generous people in the world who would do that for Nancy:' he says, explaining how he telt when he handed the tickets to Nancy and Akaysha. " I thought that it was very generous of (Farren) and shows he wasn't just thinking of himself:' says Linda Sun, Warren's mother. She says her son has been on the receiving end of kind- ncss himself over the years and that "it was nice to give some- thing for a change.- Nancy was diagnosed with cervical cancer a year ago. Although it is possihlc to treat some terms of the disease, Dr. Amit Oia, her doctor at Princess Mar,,,arct Hospital, wys Nancy's is "an aggr<cssive type - and is -too advanced to treat with the usual treatment" Nancy and Janet appealed to the public for help recently after being told Nancy does not quality for assistance from agencies which grant the wishes of terminally -ill children. "They all told me they all deal with children and because my sister is 27 years old, they can't help her:' says Janet. Ms. Sun says, "I hope from this someone els: might come forward and be so generous" as a result of War-ren's kindness. Tlx: teenager adds, " I hope they would help other people, not just Nancy. but other people who have had anything go wrung in their life" While the two tickets are a big help, the Bensons still need another ticket and money to pay for accommodations. A third ticket is needed because someone must accompany Nancy since she is unable to care for Akaysha on her own. Twit Ajax businesses, Honey Garlic and the Royal Scut, have organized fund- raising events to raise money for the Ben- sons. Honey Garlic has donated several items which it will sell at its location in the MacKenzie Plaza Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with all proceeds going to the Bensons. In addition the restaurant gave Nancy a cash donation Wednesday night when it hosted a birthday party for Akaysha. "Why wouldn't anybody want to help somcho dy in this posit) l ) says Roxanne Tommasulo of Honey Garlic. "I'm more shocked at people who don't help than people who do:' she says. The Royal Scot will host a special karaoke night Saturday, Oct. 5, with all proceeds, including staff wages, a per- centage of drink sales, as well as money raised from ralfles, going to help the Bensons. NVhen Canadian Auto Workers President Buzz Hargrove emerged from a Toronto hotel Tuesday night to announce a deal with Chrysler Canada, it set the stage for employment stability for a sizable por- tion of the workforce in Ajax -Pickering. The three-year deal means nearly 700 workers at the Chrysler trim plant in Ajax will stay on the job. That means more security, more economic activity and ultimately more prosperity in the neighborhoods surrounding the plant. Now, as the CAW turns its attention to the other automakers, particularly General Motors in Oshawa, the pattern of bargaining has been set. «'e're pleased the Chrysler deal has been inked and will be recommended to CA«' members for ratifica- tion in Ajax Sunday and hope the same end can be reached with General Motors when negotiations get under way. General 'Motors, the biggest of the so-called Big Three automakers. has taken a hard line on the out- sourcing issue, setting the tone for negotiations. The CA«', predictably, says it must protect jobs and is wholly opposed to contracting out of sen -ices. But the issue was just as contentious during negoti- ations with Chrysler, and still a contract agreement was reached. It's important — to the people who work in the auto industry in Durham and to the region's economy — that the same common-sense approach prevails during bargaining talks with GM in the coming weeks and months. The automakers have enjoyed gains since the last round of contract negotiations with the CAW. The CAW is fully aware of that and is bargaining accord- ingly. But we caution both sides: Nobody wins in a strike. Chrysler helped hammer out language on the out- sourcing issue the company is prepared to honor while still remaining profitable. The CAW, for its part, stuck to the issues without trotting out a lot of tired old cliches for the media about big, bad business. The result, through practical bargaining, is a three- year deal Chrysler workers in the area can count on. Let's hope the salve can be said of negotiations this fall with General Motors. - ky To respond to this editorial call Injosouree at 4V -e-- 683-7040 and dial 5110 ould be typed or Each, letter mint ime or two initially phone number for,,. the ri6t to edit v Letters to the editor MP McTeague rides to the rescue To the editor: Recently I've read in your paper let- ters criticizing NIP Dan McTeague on various issues. This letter is about Mr. McTeague's ability to act on behalf of his constituents — and this comes from someone who did not vote Liberal in the last election. I developed a serious health problem in January. I was told by my doctor and a specialist that I was unfit for work. For years, through my company, I had paid into a group insurance plan which provid- ed coverage should I ever find myself incapacitated. Despite various letters from my doctor, pressure from my company's president, and even assistance from a lawyer, the insurance company refused to recognize my disability. After more than six months of worry, no income, and further deterioration of my health, I decided to explain my posi- tion to both MP McTeague and MPP Janet Ecker. I was contacted almost immediately by Mr. McTeague's office and although they pointed out this could well be a provincial matter, he would see what he could do. He asked me for details of the insurance company in question and said he would contact the company's head office in Winnipeg on my behalf. Two days later, I spoke again with Mr. McTeague's office and they asked me if I had heard from Winnipeg. As I had not, they said they would call the company directly. I heard the next day that after seven months my claim had been approved. The point of this letter is not only to thank Dan McTeague publicly, but to implore any other people who find them- selves being bullied and enmeshed in red tape and bureaucracy by large corpora- tions such as this insurance company, contact your MP. You will find someone who's sympathetic and ready for action. Sharleen Stoker Foote, Ajax MPP Ecker offers excuses, not answers to constituent's queries To the editor: Re: Cathy Moody's letter relating her experience concerning the fact that MPP Janet Ecker has not responded to her letters. I, too, have experienced the same frustration. When I asked at the con- stituency office why my letters to various questions were not answered the excuses have been: (I ) Janet Ecker is busy at the moment as she has been elected. (2) She's a busy person now as she has been made parliamentary secretary. I think the remark I made about possibly writing to the newspapers regarding her tardiness in replying to her constituents was the rerson I received a response from her within a few hours. The latest excuse I received from her office about the delay in institut- ing the promised town hall meetings was that she is busy with a heavy workload as the Minister of Community and Social Services. So, I would say to Cathy Moody don't be too distressed.
