The long-time Ajax resident does know he'll donate his 100th unit of blood at a clinic at St. Bernadette's Church Tuesday. "I like to give blood to help people. I feel it's good for your system to get new blood," says Mr. VanBoxtel, 69. lie donated the gift of life for the fust time in the mid-1960s while working at Whitby Psychiatric llospi- tal. "They asked for blood donations because they needed it, so 1 started. I didn't know I had a rare blood type (RHO-), but I found out. "I have a rare type that can be used on any person, so I've been told by the nurses (at blood donor clinic`). Very often, my blood goes to the llospiml for Sick Children to newborn babies" He gives blood "as often as I can" because: 1 could prevent some pcxx little baby or an adult from dying. So I feel great" The worst thing about donating blood "is a little prick on the finger or the earlobe •' The clinic at St. Bernadette's goes from 1 to 7:30 p.m. when organizers hope to collect 250 units of blood. Sandra Tesolin of the Red Cross Society's Toronto Blood Centre says all types are needed, especially group O, because it's the most common and can be used for most patients in emer- gency situations. The Toronto Blood Centre requires 700 donations every day just to meet its needs. The required level in the blood bank for the Toronto centre is 1,455 units as it supplies b" to 61 hospitals from Oakville to Napanee and north to Huntsville. The centre is hovering around its required total, but "the problem is there's a daily need for blood and a daily challenge to get enough blood to supply hospitals with what they need,,' Ms. Tesolin says. If the supply gets too low, the blood centre may restrict the amount going to hospitals or bring blood in frons other areas, she reports. In a serious accident, one person could use up to 100 units. Each unit is divided into four com- ponents — red cells, plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate (used to treat hemophiliacs) — so up to four people can be treated with each donation. Anyone between 17 and 70 and in good health can give bk)od. All donor's are required to provide identification with their signature or a photograph. You can give blood up to six times a year but you must wait 56 days between donations. St. Bernadette's is at the corner of Harwood Avenue and Bayly Street in Ajax. In a local sense, the compassion reaches from rWht here in Durham Region all the way to Canada's rugged east coast at Labrador's Davis Inlet. It's there, you may recall, where Canadians were shocked in recent years to learn of an isolat- ed Innu community where the inhabitants lived in squalid conditions and children were dying from the effects of inhaling gasoline. In 1993, efforts began in Durham to reach into this faraway community to ease the pain of Innu living there. Today, the efforts continue, culminat- ing this year in a tour of unique and attractive homes around the region -- including stops in Ajax and Pickering -- to help raise money for the needy, Innu. Proceeds from the Sept. 14 event will be sent east, with the thoughts and prayers of all of us u ho live such a different existence here in the heart of Ontario. The contrast and irony is hard to miss: Exquisitely designed homes are being presented so interested participants can appreciate and note the architecture and landscape of particularly pretty homes in the region. The money raised from this tour of beautiful places will go to help a commu- nity of people living in polar opposite circum- stances. We hope that irony isn't lost on those who turn out for the tour. We hope a substantial amount is raised so this effort in our little corner of the world can help others who struggle in theirs. We hope the Innu of Davis Inlet can find the hope and motivation to make their lives better. We hope we never forget our place in life. Or theirs. I was sitting in the middle of the Verona Mall eyesore (no, really, it was a dream, not a night- mare) surrounded by beautiful lush vege- tation which completely covered the rot- ting cement structures. I soon realized 1 was in a sanctuary where sick and aban- doned animals were being cared for by loving staff and a host of volunteers, all dedicated to their care and well-being. Several children were feeding baby animals and spoke tenderly to their little charges, comforting the sick and loving the abandoned. I knew in my heart that these children would grow up to become caring, responsible adults who would help make this planet a more peaceful place in which to live. Meanwhile, visitors kept arriving to, see Ajax's new attraction and vowed to return again and again to enjoy our beau- tiful sanctuary. They all proclaimed "it's worth the drive to Ajax". Then, sudden- ly, everything vanished and before me loomed the ugly ruins of Verona Mall. I wondered. Had I really been dream- ing, or was this wishful thinking on my part that someday, soon, something beautiful would arise from the Ghost of Verona Mall? Mr. Genco, you may indeed he the Pollyanna of the 1990s. It must be nice to occasionally take a look at the real world and not see what is going on. You obviously agree that if a young offender broke into your home, mur- dered your entire family, that they would only deserve three years in jail. J O The World of Woodworking 1111, 111 111 If . . Why Advertise in Focus on Business Durham businesses wanting to Increase their profile and sales volume rind that being part of Focus on business advertising feature definitely has its advantage. Over the last few years a great many businesses - of all sizes - have found that investment in the Aiax/Pickering News Advertiser's and Oshawa/Whitby This Weeks Focus on Business feature have generated extra plane calls that likely would not have otherwise occurred. How do you get involved? When a company make a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the page, it also receives a full feature story, complete with pictures. The story reinforces the advertisement, enabling the business to explain in depth its product and/or service, philosophy, goals, special promotions and even a historical overview. Unless the business chooses otherwise, everything is done by the newspaper's staff: the ad design, story interview and writing, plus the taking of the photographs. All the business needs to do is prepare for the increased sales volume. For more information call Janice at 683- 0707.
