be established within about three years,
says Mr. Prentice, somewhere within
walking distance of the Walls of Fame.
"Ibere is interest from various devel-
opers within the Pickering community to
get involved in the project There are
many, many options that are open to us."
Ultimately, the project might include
a hall of fame, a museum, an entertain-
ment centre, a theatre, a fast-food restau-
rant1bar and a souvenir shop. It could be
located within an existing building such
as the Pickering Recreation Complex, the
Civic Centre, the Pickering Town Centre
or the Metro East Trade Centre, or a new
structure could be built No price tag has
yet been determined.
According to Mr. Prentice, Pickering
was chosen as the site of the new hall
because of its proximity to Toronto, easy
highway accessibility and because of the
Town's aggressive campaign for the hall.
Mr. Prentice notes his organization
plans to work closely with the Pickering
community and donate some of the pro-
ceeds from its events to local charities.
The Ontario Sports Legends Nall of

about a year -and -a -half ago to establish a

School's in for a crop of new students in Durham. In
August. you say?
About 140 students are the first to attend school in
Durham's inaugural modified school year, and by all
accounts, things bode well for their future.
The controversy which surrounded the notion of so-
called vear-round schooling has since died (but was
expected, even required, to expose both sides of the
dchale when the modified calendar years was proposed)
and now students can get down to the business of learn-
ing.
A second track of students begin the new school year
at the pilot site. C.E. Broughton in Whitby, on the tradi-
tional fall school schedule
There may still he some argument about the educa-
tional merits of the modified year. There may still be
some question about its success.
Those elements of the issue. however, will take time
and an honest effort on behalf of students and educators
alike to see it through.
The Durham Board of Education exhibited leader-
ship and flexibility on the issue throughout. Public
meetings were extensively held, taxpayers spoke clearly
and articulately, and compromise was reached. Parents
opposed to the modified schedule were allowed a one-
vear reprieve to see the program in action and help
determine for themselves the merits of it.
They must make good use of the year and monitor
closely the modified year and give it the consideration it
deserves.
In the end, the only issue of vital importance is the
benefit to the young students taking part in the program.
The plan is in place, students are happily attending
class, teachers are benefitting from some of the pro-
gram's flexibility.
Given a chance, the program may be well worth it.

vYou said it...
In response to last Sunday's editorial on
provincially -mandated measles vaccina-
tions for kids returning to school in Sep-
tember, our readers said:
♦ "I don't see why you're attacking the department of health.
These kids who needed the measles shots should have had them
last (school) year along with everybody else. If they didn't get
them then, for whatever reason, they should have to go to the
clinic to get the necessary shot"
Reader Poll: A recent article on child
support systems for children in Ontario
brought this response from a reader:
♦ "1 would like to say about the article on child support , I
agree to a certain extent. But in the case of a child who is
afraid to go to.a parent or who has experienced child abuse
or violence in the home, I don't think it would be adequate
and this hould be brought out. You cannot expect a child
to do that. I don't think that's appropriate in every case.."

To the editor:
I A LLs so appalled by your 'Letter of
the Day' of Aug. 2, 194 ('Crackdown
by cops nothing but a cash grab) that I
felt compelled to respond.
Drivers of todav have become more
aggressive, more careless, and more
speed -happy than ever before. I am
pleased to hear that Durham police are
attempting to combat moving traffic
violations. Perhaps then we will see
fewer incidents where innocent
bystanders at a bus shelter are injured
because a driver runs a red light.
The Highway Traffic Act is very
specific. It doesn't give second chances
or allow for warnings when the law has
been broken. What better deterrent from
future driving violations than a mone-
tary penalty? Further, penalizing drivers
for violations isn't enforcing regulations
-- it's upholding laws that have been
written with good reasoii.
I would suggest that police do not
randomly stop motorists, without just
cause, for the sole purpose of harassing
them and attempting to find something
with which to fine that person.
Tickets are not the means for a 'tax
grab' by police. A more likely scenario
<m the case of Mr. Tom Long would be
that he was stopped for one of the
aggressive driving characteristics police
are targe mg and his attitude was such
that the officer felt Mr. Long was
deserving of fines for other violations,
including his failure to sign his licence
in ink.
Finally, I was shocked to hear that in
today's economic conditions, Mr. Long
is advocating layoffs of police officers
rather than enforcement of laws and
collection of fines. In actual fact, there
are too few police on the road today to
combat aggressive driving. Vandalism
doesn't kill, but traffic accidents do.
This is where police efforts should be
directed. The job of a police constable
has never been to win popularity con-
tests but to enforce the law, and they

To the editor
Re: Young Pickering skateboarders
to get a home (July 21 edition).
Perhaps publicity in your paper will
bring some sanity to this issue. I'm trou-
bled by a budgeting process that says
the 'Town has set aside $500,000 to
build a youth park on the Ontario
Hydro corridor... while the Windward
(store) owner estimates about $2,500 is
needed to build seven or eight wooden
ramps, curbs, rails and pyramids".
Consider what might happen if the
Town were to empower the skateboard-
ers now by providing them with limited
funds, say $2,50, and perhaps some
limited technical assistance, perhaps in
the form of local volunteers.
Given the size of the Town's capital
and operating budgets, this is a very
small sum and the payback in terms of
channelling all that young energy into a
healthy activity, not to mention what
could be learned from the experience, it
would be a shame to miss this opportu-
nity.
Consider this a test of the Town's
ability to respond to an opportunity.

Golfing
for George!
I'm golfing today in memory of
an old friend.
His name was George Hannah.
I came to know George through
his older brother, John, whom I
played minor hockey with for sev-
eral years as a teen.
George was the 'little brother'
who was always at the arena when
we played, at home in Scarborough
and later, in Pickering, and around
the Toronto area.
And George played the role
well, enduring our juvenile wise-
cracks and putdowns, filling the
water bottle when we needed it
filled, opening the gate for us dur-
ing games.
He was quick to smile, quick to
help out and quick to give us a pat
on the back when the good guys
scored or won a game.
George suffered from Cystic ,
Fibrosis. He died, far too soon, like
many victims of this hereditary
disease.
So today we play in a golf tour-
nament at Fawn Brook in north
Ajax, in memory of George. and to '
help raise money for ongoing
research into a cure for Cystic
Fibrosis. The tournament was con-
ceived of by John, but the same
young men who played hockey
together for so many years (and
still do) continue the tournament.
These kids I grew up with, who
have since grown to get married.
have children, pay mortgages and
lead busy lives, have continued to
work as a tightly -knit team to keep
George's memory alive.
For me, the golf is incidental.
The real fun is saying hello to old
friends, catching up on news and
gossip, listening to the wisecracks
from the same old characters, and
shouting at the big -screen televi-
sion in Fawn Brook's upstairs ban-
quet hall after our tournament.
But John deserves a lot of cred-
it for his efforts over the years, as
do his friends and teammates who
help him organize the annual tour-
nament, which has raised more
than $20,000 to date.
He does it, quite simply, out of
love and respect for the memory of
his little brother.
The rest of us? We're just along
for the ride, but it's a good ride.
I remember George well. I'll bet
he's smiling. I'll bet he's listening
in on the fun and banter, just like
the old days.
One one hand I wish he was
with us, but on the other, I'll bet he
is.

Summer worst
for bogus bills
FROM PAGE 1
store owner who runs a rout market. The
criminal comes in and uses a $20 bill to
make a $1 purchase of apples and he gets
$19 back in change;' explains the corpo-
ral. "So the owner loses his apples, he
loses his $19 and when he goes to the bank
and finds out the bill is counterfeit, he
loses the $20.
"That's a $40 loss, which is pretty sig-
nificant for a person running a small busi-
ness:' Corp. Wheadon says, noting that no
insurance policy covers such losses.
Detective Ken Anderson, of the
Durham Regional Police major fraud
squad, estimates in excess of $100)0 in
funny money — $10, $20 and U.S. $100
bills the most common — are passed in
the region each year.
"It is quite a serious problem. The
summer is when we always see the most
complaints. People are more mobile and
are traveling and spending more money:”
Police use a number of "tracking
mechanisms" to try to trace the origins of
counterfeit cash, starting with the serial
numbers on the phony bills. But catching
up with the culprits is difficult because
they often remain on the go.
Often when a con is caught, it's the
result of quick action taken by the victim.
J J J
The illegal reproduction and black
market sale of counterfeit credit cards is
also a growing concern — and not just
among consumers, law enforcers agree.
Despite the efforts of financial institu-
tions to create more intricately -designed
credit cards, the latest in technology has
enabled criminals to keep up with the
changes every step of tfk: way.
"Tiny can put out cards now with the
holograms and graphics that you could
never tell the difference from the real
McCoy:' says Corp. Wheadon.
Hi -tech, magnetic decoders have made
it so plastic -carrying consumers usually
never know they've been victimized. At
least not until it's too late.
Among the most popular methods
organized card counterfeiters have adopt -
cd, and one Corp. Wheadon says con-
sumers should be wary of, is -double-
swiping'"
In that con job, a card is swiped
through a decoding machine which reads
the personal information contained on the
black magnetic strip. "That information is
then transferred onto a blank card.
Corp. Wheadon explains: "A diner at a
restaurant pays by VISA and the waiter
takes the card and runs it through the elec-
tronic reader for approval. 'Then when
your back is turned for a moment they
swipe it a second time through a decoder
machine, which reads all your autobio-
graphical informatiion contained on the
black strip"
• 'Brat information is easily downloaded
onto a blank card which is sold on the
black market fetching about $5500.
"bey will sell it as quick as they can
WW the buyer will tun it up to the limit
within the month '
Despite the technology only recently
becoming available, financial institutions
have already suffered astronomical losses.
`mm losses are unbelievably huge for
banks. And they pass the losses on to us
(consumers) in the end, through lost tax
revenues and by increasing service costs"
Det. Anderson declined to discuss in
specifics whether such criminal cells oper-
ate in the region. ' there are cells where
the cards are produced and distributed
from. 'They've been through our region."
Card -related fraud schemes, he says,
have proliferated with the increase in the
number of institutions which now issue
the plastic currency.

CORRECTIVE NOTICE BY
GOODYEAR CANADA INC.
The Director of Investigation and Research
(Competition Bureau, Industry Canada) has
informed) us that savings claims published by
Goodyear from January to Nlav 1994 in various
newspapers across Canada for the promotion of
some of its replacement passenger tires have
raised questions under the misleading advertis-
ing sections 52(1)(a) and 52(1)(d) of the
Competition Act.
The advertisements contained savings claims
such as: "25"-, off"; "four tires for the price of
three"; "the second at half price" which were
not based on the ordinary selling prices of these
tires in all cases.
Goodvear has resolved this situation by ensur-
ing that all current and future savings claims.
published by Goodyear are based on the regu-
lar price at -v%-hich the product is sold in the rel-
evant market area. ,%'e have also established an
internal multi -tier advertising revie,%' system to
support this commitment.

Diamond Shine believes success comes
from treating your customers right

Your vehicle is important to you.
It's an integral part of your life.
It gets you to work, it takes you to
school. Without it you would be lost.
Cars are expensive and you want
yours to last but you have to treat it
right inside and out.
The staff at Diamond Shine
understand this philosophy all too
well. They know that to be
successful and to stay in business
you have to treat your customers
right as well.
This family business, located at
221 Westney Rd. S., in Ajax,
includes Joanne Elawar along with
brother Nach and dad Jamil.
Joanne says the business has been
growing because they know that
without the support of their
customers, they wouldn't be
succeeding in the car cleaning and
detailing business.
"We've always strived to give our
customers the best quality work
possible,* says Joanne. "We also
treat them the way we would want
to be treated."
She says that they are aiways
friendly, courteous and very
appreciative. They listen to their
customers and make sure that

every job is done to their complete
satisfaction.
The dealers in the area are also
impressed with the work Diamond
Shine has done for them and
Joanne encourages other dealers
to try their service.
"Our dealers have told us how
quickly they sell their cars after
we've cleaned them," she explains.
"Some as soon as a day later."
At Diamond Shine there are a
variety of detailing packages
available starting at $14.95. They
also specialize in detailing luxury
and sports cars such as Mercedes,
Lexus, Jaguar and Porche.
The Elawar family believes in a
tradition of quality and service and
it's evident in the success of brother
Wally's Restaurant on Simcoe St.
N. in Oshawa.
`I don't believe you can be taught
how to treat people right,' says
Joanne. "It's mostly inside you and
people sense that when they meet
you. Our family feels that if you
treat people good they will treat you
good too.'

Pat Aprile of Pick -A -Mix Concrete demonstrates their stone slinger truck that
makes filling your project with stone or gravel a lot easier.
Pick -A -Mix Concrete Limited has made
life easier for its customers during the last
three decades.
This Pickering based company
specializes in providing contractors and
homeowners with top quality concrete
products for anything from a small slab to
the foundation for your house.
Pick -A Mix is a family business which
includes Pat Aprile, his dad John and son
Mike.
What makes them stand out in the
industry is their unique way of delivery their
product.
Their six trucks bring all of the various
ingredients in separate chambers built into
the truck. The cement is then mixed on the
job site where you receive the exact amount
you ordered.
"If you order five cubic metres of -
concrete that's exactly what you get," says
Pat. "It's a real cost savings for customers
and cuts down on a lot of unnecessary
waste."
He explains that in a drum mixer the
cement can become overmixed and
overheated. With their trucks it's always
fresh and the strength can be changed right
on site.
They also offer a stone slinging
business that takes the backache out of
moving gravel.
The stone slinger is a truck with an
attached conveyer belt that can be positioned
anywhere you want the gravel to go.
"Before, you had your gravel or stone
dumped in a pile and either had to use a
front end loader or a wheelbarrow to move
it," says Pat. "The stone slinger saves a lot of
time and effort."
Pick -A -Mix is also environmentally
conscious about what happens to old
concrete.
Pat says they accept waste concrete
from area contractors and then crush it for
use in new concrete. ICs perfect for cement
mixtures and is less expensive to buy.
Their company is also known for its
specialty cements like fact drying types and
latex modified cement used for things like
parking ramps and bridge decks. These are
excellent for this purpose because they bond
tenaciously to old concrete surfaces.
You can also buy coloured concrete
mixtures for unique walkways and pool
decks.
There is 16 different shades to choose
from among the mixtures of four different
colours including black, yellow and two
different shades of red
In the future, Pat hopes to have a small
concrete plant on the site to manufacture
small patio slabs and other decorate concrete
items.
Pick -A Mix Concrete Limited offers
competitive prices and their trucks are
equipped with radios to dispatch them to a
job as quick as possible.
