Reuional Council
tells Province Durham
wants welfare recipients
to work for their money
DURHAM — The Region hopes to be one
of the first 15 municipalities picked by the
Province to take part in the workfare program.
Durham Council Wednesday voted to let the
Province know the Region's interested in par-
ticipating in the program.
Oshawa Councillor Pauline Beal said taking
part from the start means "we won't have
something foisted upon us by the Province. We
can get our foot in the door and do it our way.
not their way."
Workfare sees some welfare recipients per-
form community work in exchange for their
benefits.
The Province wants 15 municipalities to
take part in the program beginning in the fall.
with the next batch of 15 municipalities chosen
to start on Jan. 1, 1997 and then another 15 to
begin on April 1 of next year, Region director
of family services Ron Dancey reported.
A panel of 21 MPPs will pick the communi-
ties in June, Mr. Dancey noted.
He added the Region wants to be one of the
first 15 municipalities so it can influence how
the program is devised and operated.

Cutting development charges
could whack taxpayers: Region
E3 Durham
Regional Council
says giving
builders a break
would wreak
`havoc' on
residents' wallets
BY KEITH GILLIGAN
_STAFF RFPUR_F R__
DURHAM — A propos-
al to reduce charges paid by
developers could substan-
tially increase your proper-
ty taxes as it might cost the
Region $300,000 this year
alone.
That's the sce-
nario Durham
Regional council-
lors painted
Wednesday when
they voted 26-0,
with six members
absent, against
changes the
provincial govern-
ment is contem- Jim
plating.
Development charges,
once called lot levies, are
paid by developers to
finance facilities and ser-
vices needed in a communi-
ty to accommodate popula-
tion growth.
The Province is review-
ing the Development
Charges Act and may limit
municipalities to impose
the levies for only 'hard'
services such as roads,
waste disposal, and water
and sewer services.
Municipalities wouldn't
be allowed to charge for
'soft' services like parks,
libraries and police ser-
vices.
The Urban Development
Institute (UDI) has been
lobbying the provincial
government to eliminate
development charges for
soft services.
"Local municipalities
would have the daylights
kicked out of them if UDI
has its way," Durham
Region Chairman Jim Witty
said.
"This will have a dra-
matic, decimating impact
on municipalities if they
exclude soft services,"
Clarington Councillor
Larry Hannah fears. The
Town of Whitby estimates
eliminating soft service
development charges would
cost that community about
$1.7 million a year.
A report by the Region-
al Treasurers of
Ontario stated
local governments
would have to raise
property taxes as
much as 30 to 40
per cent to make
up for lost revenue
if the development
charges can't he
imposed for soft
ditty ,ervices.
-This is a matter
that can really play havoc"
with a municipal govern-
ment's finances, Whitby
Mayor Tom Edwards said.
"We have to make it
clear to the government of
Ontario that this just isn't
acceptable."
Oshawa Councillor
Brian Nicholson said, "The
real pain would occur in the
development industry
itself' because municipali-
ties wouldn't be able to pay
for services and would
reject development propos-
als.
Developers -will suffer
far more than the munici-
palities."
The Region would have to
consider a tax hike to make
up the lost revenue. Mr.
Nicholson noted.

Tramc Ughts
at Hwy. 2 and
Walnut Lane
come with
0
strings attached
By MARIANNE TAKACS
STAFF REPORTER
PICKERING — Resi-
dents near Hwy. 2 and
Walnut Lane may soon get
the traffic lights they say
are needed to curb further
accidents at the busy inter-
section, already the site of
three "horrendous" crash-
es.
But there may be a price
to pay in the future.
Last November, Picker-
ing Council approved a
zoning amendment for the
Walnut Grove Plaza on the
south side of the three-way
intersection of Walnut
Lane and Hwy. 2 that
would expand the range of
permitted uses at the plaza.
However, Town Council
has been told the Region
won't approve the zoning
amendment or install lights
at the Walnut Lane/Hwy. 2
intersection unless Picker-
ing passes a bylaw protect-
ing the option of building a
future road heading south
from the intersection. Until
now, the Town has only
had plans for a walkway
through the area south of
the intersection.
As well, the Walnut
Grove plaza has been been
asked to dedicate a portion
of its property for the road
if it is built. The plaza
owners have already
agreed to pay half the esti-
mated $50,000 cost of the
lights. The intersection
doesn't currently handle
the level of traffic usually
required by the Region for
installation of signals.
Council passed the
bylaw requested by the
Region Tuesday. But there
were accusations the
Region is holding the plaza
"to ransom" and using
"strong-arm tactics" to get
what it wants.
Richard Cornblum of
Trivest Developments
Ltd., which owns the
plaza, told councillors his
company was being held
"to ransom" by the Region
because Durham has main-
tained there will be no
lights if the provision for
the roadway isn't made.
The plaza wants the lights
to make it safer for people
to come to its stores and to
make the plaza more
attractive to tenants. Mr.
Cornblum said he has "per-
sonally witnessed three
horrendous traffic acci-
dents" at the intersection.
Ward 1 Regional Coun-
cillor Maurice Brenner
maintained the plaza own-
ers and tenants are "vic-
tims of a strong-arm
approach that is totally
inappropriate and sug-
gested the Region was
"overstepping its bound-
aries'.
"I don't think the
Region has any legal right
to request what they are
requesting." said Ward 2
Regional Councillor Doug
Dickerson.
Town director of plan-
ning Neil Carroll told
councillors that even if
they agreed to protect the
roadway option, the Town
would not be required to
go ahead with it in the
future.
Area residents want the
lights for the sake of safe-
ty, but have expressed con-
cern that if a road is con-
structed at the south side of
the intersection, it will
increase traffic flow on
their neighborhood streets
to a dangerous level.
In their resolution to
protect the road option as
requested by the Region,
Council included a condi-
tion that would require a
traffic impact study be
done with area residents
before the road is ever pro-
ceeded with.
There is also a condi-
tion under which the road
will only be considered in
conjunction with or fol-
lowing elimination of
plans by the Region to
make Dixie Road into an
arterial roadway. The
Region has suggested to
the Town it might be will-
ing to back down on its
plans for Dixie Road if
provision is made for a
future public road to the
south of Walnut Lane and
the new lights at Walnut
Lane are put in place.
The "temporary" lights
will be installed on wood
poles with overhead wiring
rather than stainless steel
poles with underground
wiring. Temporary fixtures
are being installed because
the Region doesn't want to
go to the expense of
putting in expensive lights
when significant changes
might soon be made at the
intersection. Permanent
lights will go in when
those changes are made.

ture with an illuminated sign
featuring the Town crest at
the top, and a programmable
three -by -nine -foot display
area for messages just
below. It is to be built at the
intersection of Whites and
Kingston Roads. The Town
of Ajax already has a similar
sign on the south side of
Hwy. 2 just east of Westney
Road, which was paid for by
the Rotary Club of Ajax.
Pickering's sign won't be
constructed until two-thirds
of the money needed to
build it has been raised in
the community. The sign
will be supplied by a local
company, Dancosigns.
The motion to have the
sign erected was brought to
Council by Ward I Regional
Councillor Maurice Brenner
and Ward 2 local Councillor
Sherry Senis.
"It's a start to our beauti-
fication program," said
Coun. Senis, noting another
gateway sign will still be
needed at the Pickering -
Scarborough border.
Coun. Brenner said the
programmable display area
on the sign can be used by
the Town to communicate
with residents about ser-
vices and events. He also
maintained the sign would
"enhance the marketability
of the Town of Pickering" to
non-residents.
Ward 1 local Councillor
Dave Ryan, however, was
An artist's conception.
not particularly impressed
with the proposed landmark.
Noting beauty was often
in the eye of the beholder, he
said, "To me this ain't it. I
don't think this is a particu-
larly attractive structure."
Coun. Ryan also suggest-
ed putting up such a sign at
a busy intersection, with one
of the highest accident rates
in Durham might not be
such a good idea.
"We're just putting up
another diversion for the
drivers."
Mayor Wayne Arthurs
and Ward 3 Regional Coun-
cillor Rick Johnson also
opposed the sign, noting
that perhaps other locations
should be looked at and that
the money might be better
spent.
Ajax has received "very
positive feedback" on its
six -month-old sign, accord-
ing to that Town's clerk,
Martin de Rond.
"It's a great feature for
the Town to have," says Mr.
de Rond. "We're hoping to
get another one down in the
Harwood/Bayly area."
Ajax runs notices of
community events and pro-
grams on its sign. Town staff
are able to write the notices
at their offices and then
transmit them directly by
computer modem to the
sign.
Mr. de Rond says the
sign doesn't appear to have
created any traffic problems
at Hwy. 2 and Westney.

Bins. bills, bills.
Every Canadian faces them on a daily basis. One day
it's the credit card, the next it's the water bill, later in the
week in pours the heating notice. Most are met with dread.
It can be a seemingly never-ending cycle of bad news.
The doom and gloom is not limited to the taxpayers of
this country, but it evert hits our municipal offices. Recent-
ly, municipalities discovered they face GST bills from Paul
Martin. federal finance minister. Unlike the municipal
offices, the average taxpayer can't pass this bill onto some-
one else, which some municipalities are considering.
The federal govemment is in the process of implement-
ing a technical amendment to the Goods and Services Tax
which would force municipalities to pay the GST on their
hydro bills.
Most municipalities have already set their local budgets
and trying to free tip thousands of dollars could be an
onerous, nearly impossible task.
Revenue Canada wants to amend the GST legislation to
rectify an inequity that has seen municipalities in all
provinces except Ontario pay GST on supplies of electrici-
ty, gas, steam or telecommunication services provided by
municipally owned or controlled boards and commissions.
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM ) esti-
mates the change will cost municipalities between $5 mil-
lion and $15 million annually. It is trying to convince Rev-
enue Canada to delay the amendment until Jan. 1, 1997
rather than the retroactive date of April 23 it is now push-
ing. The municipalities are right in wanting the payment
date delayed so the expense can be incorporated into 1996-
97 budgets. But they can't forget they have been on an
uneven paying field for years. All the other Canadian
provinces have been paying GST on hydro bills. So,
Ontario, not taxpayers, must bite the bullet and pay their
bill.

Meeting was
like a breath of
fresh air
blowing across
the Bay
To the editor:
The public meeting on Ma} 9 to
discuss the Pickering Harbour Com-
pany's new townhouse/apartment
development on Bayly Street was a
refreshing breath of air blowing
over Frenchman's Bay.
It became clear at the meeting
that responsible development which
respects the environment, such as
this, is wanted and needed in the
Bay area.
Councillors Brenner and Dicker-
son were conspicuous by their
"naysaying" negative attitude (the
norm for them). These two council-
lors are needlessly negative and cer-
tainly out of step with the times.
The community wants to go for-
ward. Everyone is tired of being
bogged down with the past.
Sherry Senis's views represent
the wave of the future. The
resounding applause she received at
our public meeting when she spoke
is testimony to this new progressive
thinking people want to see in all
our councillors. The naysayer's got
no applause and this should suggest
to them they are out of step with
what people want to see at French-
man's Bay.
We all believe the environment
and ecosystems of the Bay are to be
respected and preserved. We all
want any new, development to meet
these community needs. Develop-
ment and the ecosystems can co-
exist if we work together to achieve
this end. These goals have been
achieved in other waterfront juris-
dictions and they can be achieved in
Frenchman's Bay.

To the editor:
Ajax Hydro, instead of just send-
ing out their bills, are now in the
communications business.
They introduced the "WOW$" pro-
gram (Working on Ways to $ave) to
reduce spending without cutting ser-
vice or staff.
Well, within an eight-week period
they reached a goal of $100,000.
Wow! Have you noticed the differ-
ence in service and cost?
Seems like they pared a little blub-
ber from the whale, or maybe they
dropped a politically appointed com-
missioner?
But the interesting part of the Live
Line messages (on the back page of
course) is that they state "We have

How was the service improved?

Policing has come full circle in
Durham. And you're responsible.
Durham Regional Police Service
Chief Trevor McCagherty spent
some time in Durham recently speak-
ing to Rotarians about some of the
changes being made to the way your
region's police force protects and
serves.
And the new methods look a lot
like the old ones.
There's community policing.
which is a fancy term for 'walking
the beat'.
There's been a top-down change
which frees up officers to make more
decisions at the street level.
Public -friendly storefront police
'stations' are springing up in commu-
nities across the region. All of which
combine to bring police presence
much closer to the people who live
and work in our communities.
The community policing initiative
is most striking, particularly when
you look back to the days when it will,
perfectly typical for store owners.
residents and even criminals to know
their neighborhood cop by his first -
name. He would nod a greeting, settle
disputes without using his radio,
without drawing his nightstick (or
perhaps worse), and without having,
to spend three hours doing paper-
work.
That kind of policing is coming
back, and we'll all be the better for it
simply because of the connection
made between the people who fight
the bad guys and the people who are
victimized by them.
I also like the idea of so-called
storefront stations. Far less intimidat-
ing than the cold and cavernous struc-
tures built in recent decades, these
`stations' invite participation and
encourage communication between
law enforcement and people on the
street.
In this crazy world we live in,
police need all the help they can get
from those of us who stay on the right
side of the law. By forging new rela-
tionships, we can indirectly — but
effectively — aid in the ongoing battle
against crime.
Tlvough these initiatives, events
organized in our communities by
police officers, and information
meetings to hear what the public has
to say, police are helping to create a
much larger force with `civilian per-
sonnel'.
And the bad guys, now more than
ever, had better look out.

PICKERING — Just last month the
commemorated the I Oth anniversary of
Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
As the images of the burned -out hul

as a result of nuclear fallout flickered
our television screens, Pickering and A
residents may have given more though
ever before to the potential for a simila
aster sitting on the Lake Ontario shorehim not
far from their homes.
Few experts will contradict the contention
that the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station
is significantly different and far safer than the
Chernobyl plant. However, all will admit
there is a possibility of a serious accident
here, though they will argue about exactly
how long the odds against it are.
It's the remoteness of the possibility of a
major accident at the station that's preventing
us from dealing properly with the potential
for nuclear disaster, and it must be dealt with,
says Irene Kock of Durham Nuclear Aware-
ness, a citizens' lobby group on nuclear
issues-
" There's so much distrust and there's so
little known among the general public," says
Ms. Kock -
DNA maintains the possibility of a major
accident and release of radioactivity from the
Pickering station, no matter how remote,
should be discussed and planned for openly.
One rection is so we can all be better prepared
for it, and the other is to ease people's anxiety
about it. Ms. Kock notes many people have

an exaggerated notion of what such an acci-
dent might entail, based on what they know
about events like Chernobyl and Hiroshima.
"We feel people have a right to know, to
help lessen people's panic and fear. There is a
lot people can do to protect themselves, pro-
vided they know it's happening. There are
really basic things they can do to protect
themselves from exposure-"
For example, says Ms. Kock, if accident
scenarios were discussed more freely and
more often people would know going and
staying indoors will provide considerable
protection from radiation exposure. Because
they don't know, she maintains, if there is an
accident at the station many residents will
likely follow their natural instincts and jump
into their cars to hightail it out of town,
which will create huge traffic and evacuation
problems should evacuation become neces-
sary-
It may be scary to think and talk about a
nuclear disaster, adds Ms. Kock, but the pos-
sibility is "a fact of life" and it won't help to
bury our heads in the sand.
The man in charge of planning for a
nuclear accident here, Ifti Ahmad of Emer-
gency Measures Ontario, an office of the
provincial government, agrees it's best to
keep a level head about the whole possibility.
"It's not something which is as frightening
at people seem to feel," says Mr. Ahmad.
He says there are three major things citi-
zens can do to deal with a nuclear disaster
here. One is to look ahead of time at the
emergency instructions brochure they should
have received in the mail about three vears
ago. People should familiarize themselves
with its contents, particularly the instructions
on where they're supposed to go if there is an
evacuation.
Second, if an accident does occur, resi-
dents should listen to and follow the instruc-
tions that will be broadcast on radio and TV.
That, says Mr. Ahmad, should help ensure
evacuation and other measures proceed
smoothly for all.
And third. he says, "Don't panic. There's
no need to panic. There are arrangements in
place to take care of every eventuality."
After-effects of a nuclear mishap are unclear
PICKERING — There are hundreds of
radioactive elements which could escape from
the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station in the
event of a major accident.
What would actually be emitted, either
through controlled venting or a failure of con-
tainment, would depend on the nature of the
accident The amount that would threaten the
surrounding population would also depend on
the type of mishap, and factors such as weath-
er and wind direction. Winds blowing toward
the lake would allow radioactive particles to
decay and dissipate while winds blowing
toward populated areas would create an imme-
diate threat.
Some of the most dangerous elements that
might escape include Potassium 42 and
Cesium 137, which can end up in muscle tis-
sue; Radon 222 and Plutonium 239, which can
affect the lungs; Radium 226, Strontium 90 and
Carbon 14, which may be absorbed in bones;
and Iodine 131, which enters the thyroid gland.
Radioactive elements can take anywhere from
a few days to thousands of millions of years to
break down to the point where they are no
longer a threat.
Some radioactive particles can penetrate
human skin and others must be inhaled or
ingested through food to get inside the body.
They can concentrate in tissues, irradiating sur -
Nuclear emergency plans being revamped
PICKEMG — Emergency Measures
Ontario is currently in the process of draw-
ing tip new plans for dealing with a poten-
tial accident at the Pickering nuclear sta-
tion.
The changes follow a recent review of
the plans, which found them to be deficient
in areas such as alerting the public, dealing
with the possibility of an uncontrolled
release of radioactivity, and addressing the
long-term effects of a radioactive release.
A number of revisions are being consid-
ered, says Ifti Ahmad, the man in charge of
drafting the new plans. They include
improvements to the public alerting sys-
tem; priority evacuation for people closest
to the plant; the possible pre -distribution of
potassium iodide pills to protect against the
absorption of radioactive iodine into the
thyroid gland; better monitoring for radia-
tion exposure; improved decontamination
measures; and long-term follow-up of indi-
viduals exposed to radiation.
Existing emergency plans provide for
the evacuation of the population within a
10 -kilometre radius of the plant
"Our first priority is to make sure that
no harm is done to the residents of the area
and that their safety and health and well-
being is assured,,, says Mr. Ahmad.
rounding cells and increasing the risk of cancer.
Reproductive organs are particularly sensitive
to radiation, which can alter genetic codes of
DNA in egg and sperm cells and cause birth
defects and cancer in offspring. Some say radi-
ation wekens the immune system.
What level of radiation is required to cause
serious damage is a matter of considerable
debate. At Chernobyl, only people on site at the
time of the explosion died of or became imme-
diately ill from acute radiation exposure. It's
also generally accepted the accident resulted in
a major increase in thyroid cancers in the
Ukraine, Belarus and Russia (Tlre potassium
iodide pills which are supposed to be distrib-
uted here in case of an accident are expected to
significantly reduce the possibility of thyroid
cancer.) There's less agreement after these
major points, however. Various international
studies find conflicting evidence regarding the
incidence of other cancers and birth defects
among the population in areas affected by the
Chernobyl accident.
According to Irene Kock of Durham
Nuclear Awareness, there is little information
available about what kind of radiation doses
could be expected as the result of a major acci-
dent at the Pickering station.
"Ontario Hydro has never calculated what
the worse -case scenario dose would be," she
says. "I've looked for it"
Odds against
an accident
are long but
debatable
PICKERING — The chance of a
serious accident at the Pickering
Nuclear Generating Station — the kind
that would result in major radioactive
emissions — is pretty remote.
First of all, the Pickering station uses
heavy water to moderate the fission
process, which does not bum like the
graphite used as the moderator in the
Chernobyl station.
All eight reactors at Pickering are
housed in a thick concrete dome
designed to prevent the escape of any
radioactive material to the outside in the
event of an accident. Each reactor is also
connected by piping to a vacuum build-
ing. If radioactive steam leaks into the
reactor unit, it should be automatically
sucked into the vacuum building, where
it is condensed into liquid and con-
tained.
Some radioactive contaminants
would eventually have to be released
from the vacuum building since the neg-
ative pressure inside it can't be main-
tained indefinitely.
However, the
radioactivity of the
_.ontaminants it
holds would
.diminish quite
rapidly, and a filter
system is in place
to trap radioactive
particles as the
building is vented.
Irene Kock The goal of the
design is to delay
venting as long as possible to reduce the
radioactivity of the contaminants before
they are released, and to allow the sur-
rounding population to be evacuated if
necessary. It could be only a few days or
perhaps several weeks before venting
would have to take place, depending on
the nature of the accident -
The vacuum building at the Picker-
ing station has never had to be used. The:
plant's operating licence is based on a
risk calculation that an accident requir-
ing the use of the vacuum building
would occur only once in 10,000 years
of reactor operation and a mishap
involving vacuum building failure
would occur once in 100,000 years of
operation.
Greenpeace, however, has taken a
different view of that risk figure. The
environmental organization contends
the risk of a nuclear accident requiring
vacuum building use occurring some-
where in Ontario is one in 17, based on
a calculation taking into consideration
the remaining projected lives of all 20
existing nuclear stations.
Irene Kock of Durham Nuclear
Awareness notes the risk calculations do
not take into account the important fac-
tor of human error in station design,
operation and maintenance. She also
maintains too little has been done to
investigate the possibilities of steam or
hydrogen gas explosions inside the reac-
tor units, which could result from a com-
bination of a coolant failure and over-
heating of the fuel bundles. Such an
explosion, she says, would likely rup-
ture the reactor containment building.
There is also the possibility of an earth-
quake, which Ms. Kock says Ontario
Hydro has "discounted".

Liquor stores crack down on drunks,
underage drinkers
DURHAM — Customers of the Liquor
Control Board of Ontario may be asked to
show identification when shopping at Durham
Region outlets.
The LCBO has relaunched its annual con-
sumer awareness campaign, B.Y.I.D. (Bring
Your Identification).
Aimed at discouraging sales to minors and
to customers who appear to he intoxicated, the
campaign focuses on the four holi-
day weekends throughout the
warmer months: Victoria Day, Cana-
da Day, the Civic Holiday and Labor
Day.
During the campaign, staff at all
594 LCBO stores wear B.Y.I.D. but-
tons and stickers to encourage cus-
tomers to ask about the LCBO's
Challenge and Refusal program.
Under this year-round program,
customers who appear to be under
age arc required to provide valid
identification showing proof of age,
or service is refused. People thought
to be attempting to purchase for
underage individuals and customers
who appear to be intoxicated are
also refused service.
Last year, LCBO staff challenged
nearly 300,000 potential customers,
up from 230,000 the year before.
Of those challenged, more than
60,0(0 were refused service for
either failing to produce valid iden-
tification or for appearing intoxicat-
ed.
That is 10,000 more than in
1994-95. All refusals were docu-
mented by LCBO staff.
LCBO employees learn how to
deal with challenge and refusal situ-
ations throw h an in-house trainin

Seminars, instructional work-

Ajax minor hockey grad tries out for national team
By ROB LETH
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS ADVERTISER _
AJAX — The Peterborough Petes'
Adrian Murray didn't spend much
time feeling sorry about his team's
loss to the Granby Predateurs in the
final of the Memorial Cup last week-
end.
The 6'4"', 215 -pound defenceman.

hockey system, is currently trying

Hockey Team.
The camp in Caledon began
Friday and ends Monday.
Murray knows he's being closely
evaluated by the coaching staff but
he's not putting any extra pressure on
himself.
"I just have to go out there and
play my game and not worry about
what the other guys do. I have to use
my size, take the body and clear a
path in front of the net. I think I have
an advantage because my season just
ended and a lot of the other guys
have probably been off the ice for a
few weeks."
Murrav was invited to the camp in
a letter from Canadian head coach
Tom Renney, who outlined the tradi-
tion of the team and listed the players
who have skated for Team Canada
and gone on to successful careers in
the National Hockey League.
"It's definitely an honor to be
selected to try out for such a great
team," says Murray. "It's a great
opportunity for me. According to the
letter, I'm on the final list of names
to be invited so I think my chances of
making the team are pretty good."
The invite couldn't have come at a
better time for the Petes' captain.
Two years ago he was drafted by the
Winnipeg Jets, but things never
panned out for him and he's current-
ly a free agent.

Wilson has made the most of his
opportunities with the Bisons, hitting
.333, with 32 runs batted in and a
league -leading 10 home runs, includ-
ing two grand slam homers.
He has also helped the Bisons
r leagu
climb into first place in the American
Association.
In a game in Omaha, Nebraska
Tuesday, Wilson hit for the cycle,
belting a single, double, triple and
home run.
Last year, the 25 -year-old outfield-
er played with the Indianapolis
Indians, the Reds' 'AAA' affiliate in
the American Association. Wilson
was the starting left fielder and put up
big numbers, hitting .313 with 17
home runs and 60 RBI in 80 games.
However, after the team finished first
overall during the regular season, the
Indians fell in three straight games in
the opening round of the playoffs to
eI baseball
the eventual champion Louisville
Cardinals.
This is Wilson's fourth year of
playing ball at the 'AAA' level, hav-
ing suited up for two seasons with the
Edmonton Trappers, the Florida
Marlins 'AAA' affiliate of the West
Coast league, and last year with
Indianapolis of the American
Association.
His Bisons are currently atop the
American Association loop's Eastern
Division with a record of 29 wins and
12 losses. Buffalo leads Wilson's for-
mer team — the Indianapolis Indians
— who are in second place by seven
games.

General exercise is important for good
health, but exercising your large musculature is
not a substitute for getting each joint of your
spine working in harmony with one another.
Regular chiropractic care releases the spinal
nerves which could give you instant relief and
make it possible for you to feel more balanced,
less stressed and more energetic.
It makes sense to keep your body's
defenses as strong as possible rather than cover

RETURN TO GOOD POSTURE
As children, we unconsciously
mimicked tate posture and body

your spine, nerves, and muscles,
you'll discover improved posture
along with increased balance, co-
