In the meantime, councillors have asked for more infor- mation on questions raised by Ward I Reeional Councillor Rick Johnson Monday night about Bradscot's per- formance on other projects. Staff will also look into a request from Ward 2 local Councillor Sherry Senis to inves- tigate whether a performance clause can be included in the contract for the project that would impose penalties on the builder if it's not completed on time. Pickering operations manager Tom Quinn told councillors the Town has never required such a clause before and it was not included in the tender for this project. Mr. Quinn also noted such a clause is usually accompanied by a provision granting the contractor a bonus if the project is completed early. Coun. Senis responded, howev- er, that the market for contractors is "very competitive" at present and the Town could probably have a penalty clause put in for the Claremont project without a bonus provision. Construction of the combined com- munity centre, seniors' centre, fire hall and library facility for Claremont is expected to be complete next Febru- ary. There was much controversy over the Claremont project when it was first approved by Council in 1994. Last December, Council deferred plans to designate the McPherson/Campbell House in Lynn Heights Park an historic site and have it restored for community or private use. The Town's Local Architectural Conser- vation Advisory Committee had concluded the 130 -to - 160 -year-old one -and -a - half -storey fieldstone house had historical significance and was worthy of preserva- tion. An investigation of the property commissioned by LACAC found its past occu- pants included William T. Dunbar, founder of the com- munity of Dunbarton; Jean McPherson, former deputy reeve of the Town of Picker- ing: and at least four genera- tions of the Campbell fami- ly. Council put off until this September at the latest the 'issue of what exactly to do with the house, so Town staff could discuss it with area residents, LACAC, arts groups and developers. Staff proposed limited renova- tions to prevent further dete- rioration of the run-down building; renovations for community use such as an art gallery and studio; or sale of the building to a pur- chaser willing to restore it — all at possible costs rang- ing from $15,000 to $95,000. A further option was to move the house to Pickering Museum Village or some other location, at an estimated cost of $290,000. Area residents told Coun- cil they don't want the house turned into any private or community facility because it would create traffic and noise, take away a portion of the park, block their view of the park and create a securi- ty hazard. The old community hall has insufficient wash- rooms and parking and is not accessi- ble to the disabled and elderly, and the old seniors' centre is also inaccessi- ble. Pickering is sharing the cost of the project with the federal and provincial ,governments, under the Canada/Ontario infrastructure pro- gram. The Town's share of the con- struction bill will be $939,726, with Ottawa and the Province sharing the rest, which includes GST and other costs that will bring the total bill to $2.68 million. The Town is also pay- ing a total of $536,000 for land for the centre, which will bring its total expenditure to about $1.47 million. The GTA mayors think the idea has merit and want to pur- sue it further. "I think it's an excellent idea," says Clarington Mayor Diane Hamre. "We have so much to offer (in the GTA), I think it's great." Mayors and regional chair- men at the GTA mayors' meeting in Clarington voted Friday to get details on the GTA hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics. Richmond Hill Mayor William Bell said the mayors have agreed to write the Canadian Olympic Association to get more information. The letter's tone will indicate the GTA may- ors "think we might be interested, please send us some details," said Mayor Bell. "It's a flagship type of project to show the GTA communities can work together," said Mayor Bell, who added the Olympics Nancy Diamond are too large of a pro- ject for one community to handle. Swimming pox)Is, casinos, baseball stadiums, soccer pitches, new highways, state-of-the-art communication systems and any other trinket, bell or whistle you can think of we'll need for the future. We might as well, with the announcement the Greater Toronto Area mayors are making plans to pitch for the 2(X)8 Olympics. The Olympics in the GT.A — it has a nice ring to it. Who knows'? Dick Pound of the International Olympic Committee could rent a cottage in Newcastle to attend sailing regattas. Other big wigs could enjoy fancy meals at local restaurants. Olympic athletes could stay in Durham College student housing for a few weeks. Hwy. 401 could be the site of the torch run and maybe, just maybe, the pool at the Ajax Community Cents: could host swimming. What a fantasy. But that's all it should be —just a fan- tasy. If the GTA mayor% were to follow through on their idea to pursue this Olympic dream it would be a colossal waste of time and money. Toronto wasted millions of dol- lars earlier in the decade trying to woo the Olympics. There is nothing to suggest anything has changed. The earlier Olympic dream included GTA sites hosting event also. There is nothing to get excited about and it would be repugnant if our civic leaders blindly chatted this idea. These three dozen or so GTA municipalities must be star gazing. They may be wishing on a falling star. The mayors can't even agree on what the make-up of the GTA will be in six months. how can we expect them to organize an event as onerous as the Olympics? Stan with the mess the GTA is in, get it in order and then give the Olympics a shot. But until then don't waste taxpayers' money on such a seemingly wild goal. We have heard many complaints, dis- cussions etc. about this issue over the years. Now we have a poop & scoop bylaw, and it's good to see dog owners pick after their pets. Many of them carry their plastic bag dutifully to their own garbage can. Many of them, with a quick jerk (if nobody sees it), throw it under your front garden bushes, which is a nuisance, because many let their dog go on your front lawn anyway. But this complaint is to all the dog owners who use the waterfront to let their dogs go, then pick up the poop (because it is a public place) and quick- ly throw it down the cliff. Shame on you! It would be better to leave your dog's mess alone and unbagged. I assume none of these people attend- ed the waterfront clean-up on May 6. It makes me wonder if these are the same people who throw shopping carts, old bikes, car tires, beer, pop and booze bot- tles, cigarette lighters, and foam cof- feecups over the cliff and onto the beach? Gundi Mew Ajax Funding, lack of venues a problem for arts groups To the editor: In reslxmse to your editorial of May 10 "Curtain Call" — I can only add Bravo! As a long-time conscien- tious supporter of the arts in our com- munity, 1 can only sympathize with Theatre Durham. They and all other arts groups have always had a problem with performing venues and a lack of funding. If it were not for the local churches supplying performance space. groups such as our bands, orchestras, theatre groups and choirs would all be on the endangered species list. Most of the local churches are gen- erous with their leasing arrangements (including Dunbarton-Fairport United Church - and there were valid reasons for not renewing their lease with Theatre Durham), but all this is beside the point. The real reason for this dis- mal situation is the lack of a space that could serve the performing arts in our community. For more than 10 years, arts advocates have been begging, forming communities, and struggling to persuade the town to create a per- forming arts facility. The battle still goes on! We might go into Toronto for the Phantom of the Opera, or a Blue Jays game, but spend most of our entertain- ment money enjoying the many arts groups right here in our own town. Every time an arts organization folds, it diminishes us all. Now is the time for Pickering -Ajax to evolve out of a "bedroom communi- ty" and develop their own identity as a well-rounded place to live and play. Oh, i you didn't notice that summer is here, either? Too busy still launder- ing the tuques and the longjohns'? Well, since the weather's proba- bly going to be lousy anyway, might as well stay inside for a history lesson on the origins of the Victoria Day long weekend — the myths sur- rounding it, the merriment celebrat- ing it. (1) The Victoria Da'long week- end was named in honor of the founder of the Victoria s Secret caro - rogue. False. But, it is a good time for you gals to model your skimpy underthings for your guys because, quite frankly, he's as tired as you are of the flannel jammies you've been wearing since Labor Day. (2) Queen Victoria, for x•hom the long weekend is actually named it -as a real pan animal. True. Since her birthday fell on May 24. she would purchase a 24 of beer, a tradition that celebrants of this particular long weekend uphold to this day. (3) The queen would celebrate her birthday at a palace in the counts - side. Close. She actually ventured to her cabin in Nottingham Forest. on the shore of Loch Ness, where she would fix the dock damaged by the winter weather, suck up dead flies with an ancient Hoover upright and hunt down vermin that had taken up residence in the place. Historians believe a bat bite inflicted upon the queen may have contributed to the appearance of a descendant named Charles. (4) Upon waking in the morning, Victoria demanded that her servants greet her with a 21 -gun salute. Cone And, that is how fire- works got their beginning. (5) People who lived in her time — the Victorian era — didn't bathe very often, so they were set upon by flies. True. And, each year, on her birthday, the black flies return to Nottingham, Muskoka, the Kawmlhas, Haliburton and anywhere that has cabins by a lake. (6) Victoria liked to travel slowly in her horse-drawn carriage. Wrong. Her penchant for speed inspired the Opp to step up highway patrols on the May 24 weekend. (7) The queen spared no expense in ensuring the royal retreats were always well heated Right. BY KEITH GILLIGAN STAFF__RFPOUER _ ___ AJAX-PICKERING -- For as long as words have appeared on paper, readers have felt compelled to comment. Sometimes readers agree with what's written, sometimes they don't. Be honest, you've probably read something in the Ajax -Pickering News Advertiser and thought 'What a lot of garbage' or 'I couldn't have said it better myself. Like most newspapers, the News Advertiser has an avenue for readers to commend, criticize, or simply comment. It's the Letters to the Editor feature on Page 6 of every edition. It's there that readers can have a say on a News Advertiser story or a top- ical issue. Some readers may only submit one letter, while others have plenty to say, regularly putting their thoughts on paper. Frank Threlkeld Jr. of Pickering has been a pro- lific letter writer, as he's had about 100 missives published in the News Advertiser since 1987. A never thought I'd write 100 letters, but you kept putting them in. I felt very flat- tered," Mr. Threlkeld says. Donald Young of Pickering Village has recently become a regular contributor, with "five or six letters" published in the News Advertiser over the past several months. "I'm looking for more per- manent work. I have been for a couple of years. I have free time on my hands. If I don't do something constructive, I don't do anything." Ajax resident Charles 'Chic' Presley puts pen to paper when he has a thorn in his side. "(After) I get up and sit around in the morning, some issue bites me and I have to write on the stu- pidity of things." Ajax Hydro is often a target of Mr. Presley's poison pen, although he says he doesn't have a grudge against the utility. "It's just their attitude" that gets him. That and the fact he feels Ajax Hydro's rates are too high. Letter writing does have a ther- apeutic value, he admits. "I get it off my chest and bring attention to others." Letters to the editor and people who write them But, does it accomplish any- thing? "Sometimes something happens. There's satisfaction when I've identified a problem. I1' I can't do amthinL, :iho�ut it, I Ict reform spurred Mr. Young to begin writing letters. "I got socially involved and the first thing that got me going was the GTA and all the talk about ::hanging it. I wrote a letter the editor of the Toronto ,%tar about how the GTA mould be laid out. They ;-uhlished it, so I thought I'd Jo more." A computer consultant on a contract basis, Mr. Young ,,ays, "I have a lot of time" to write letters. "Every day I keep up on important issues and try to centre on them." Topics for his letters "tend to lean more toward government things, particu- larly the provincial govern- ment", such as GTA reform and labor law changes. He's "cautious about things that impact people directly", including stories about the Children's Aid Society and the case of Toronto resident Donna Mercier, who claimed her purse was stolen and all her money taken. "I said there was some- thing not right about that. I just didn't feel there was anything I could contribute. In that case, I'm glad I stayed away because it turned out to be a sad situa- and it wouldn't have been oved by anything I had to Ajax resident Charles Presley often gets a bee in his bonnet about Ajax Hydro, among other things. He says he feels compelled at times to "write on the stupidity of things." know," Mr. Presley notes. He's had three calls about his last letter slamming Ajax Hydro. When one person asked what else he was going to do, Mr. Presley suggested getting a little group together to challenge the utility. But, he didn't want to take it any further than that. "I'm too busy doing other things, like enjoying life." He's never heard back from Ajax Hydro, except after his first letter that stated its rates were too high. That's important to him because, "when I comment, I tend to suggest a better way. I say 'this is wrong. Perhaps this is a better way.' I don't complain for the sake of complaining. I offer an alternative to what others think. I don't write letters for the sake of writing letters, although it fills time. It's important, worth- while." He admits that, when a letter is published, it gives him a feeling of "self -value". Last year, he began researching a book, but put that on hold to write a two -act play that's being published. "I'm kind of eclectic. I need a challenge to keep my mind active." True to his word about offering solutions, Mr. Young says, "I think more space should be given to let- ters. There's a lot of people think- ing about the issues. That's a posi- tive thing." He says his wife "thinks I should get a job and get paid for my talents. She'd rather I write than not, but she'd rather I work than not work." Mr. Threlkeld started writing THE NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY, MAY 19, 1996 -PAGE 7 Points to ponder when you're writing to us: * Keep it brief. That allows other voices in the community an opportunity to be heard as well. Three shorter letters on a topi- cal issue are more effective than a single long one. * Make your point early. By sticking to the issues, your voice is heard more clearly. * Make it local. You may be ticked off about Unemployment Insurance reform, but try to tackle the issue on the home front. How does it affect your life in Ajax. In Pickering? In Durham? * Be yourself. Don't worry too much about poetic prose. We'll correct spelling errors and sentence structure without changing the.tone or point of your letter. * Get involved. The best way to effect change or bring light to an issue is by being informed and being involved. Your letters will reflect that. * Attack the issues, not the individuals. You may be mad at the mayor, but take issue with what he says or what his council has decided, not with his character. But, he resumed writing letters when the Frenchman's Bay issue came up again recently. "I got frustrated. It got to the point where I didn't give a damn if the Town (of Ajax) wanted to ostracize me. I should be free to express myself. I felt I shouldn't compromise myself. Freedom of speech is very important to me. Every citizen should keep informed and nobody should be afraid to express themselves on issues." Since he's resumed writing let- ters, "Nobody has said anything to me." Mr. Threlkeld feels his letter writing accomplishes something. "I think I stirred some people's minds. I'd like to think that. The Pickering Baseball Association's minor bantam rep baseball team, sponsored by Delfor Corp., will take part in a tour of the island from July 7 to 14. A total of 12 players, all aged 14, three coaches and a group of parents will make the trip. Team manager Paul Ogborne notes the minor bantam year is a slow one for the players in terms of tournaments, so he wanted to give his players an experience to remember. Cobey Black has a talent she wants to share. She wants to literally give you a hand -on course on how to make your hands look beautiful. For the past three years, Cobey has owned The Nail Station located upstairs at 47 Prince St. in Oshawa. During that time she specialized in applying acrylic nails, tips and the most unique nail art both hand painted and air brushed designs. This allowed clients to choose from an endless number of styles to suit their personality and fashion needs. But Cobey knew that for some, having beautiful nails can be expensive. She says some women can spend up to $800 a year. So eight months ago she had an opportunity to expand her premises enabling her to establish a career training centre. "I started the career centre for two reasons," says Cobey. "I wanted a place where women can learn how to do their own nails and save money and for those who want to do it as a career." With many hair salons in the area expanding their range of services for their clients, the need for people trained in nail applications, manicures, pedicures and waxings has grown at a phenomenal rate. To satisfy this need Cobey instructs small groups giving each one individual instruction. Classes are 17 hours in length over four weeks. They learn how to apply acrylic nails, tips, coatings and learn the creative talent of nail art using the latest techniques and equipment. For those that want to learn manicures, pedicures and waxing, the classes are three hours in length. At the completion of each of the different courses graduates receive a certificate. "During the classes I just don't teach technique, I also discuss what their goals are, especially if they're thinking about a career," explains Cobey. "I give them advice in selling, promotion and advertising methods to help them be a success." She wants to instill a professional attitude in all of her students, because combined with training it's the key to success. "I don't consider it competition if a student starts their own business because there is plenty to go around," she says. "Instead I feel very proud when they're successful because I played a part in their new venture." Career training at The Nail Station is for all ages from 16 year-olds who want to do it as a part time job to seniors who want to learn creative ways to do their own nails.
