Ontario Hydro is installing the system in response to a July, 1994 request by Durham Council that was formally repeated by Pickering Council Monday. The utility has approved the $374,000 cost of the system and it will be ordered shortly. Equipment required includes a lake current meter, 2,500 metres of cable, and computer hardware and software. Installation will begin in mid -summer and the system is expected to he in service by mid- October. A similar system is being installed for the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in Clarington. The equipment will help predict when a radioactive spill from either station will reach local water filtration plants and possibly contami- pate drinking water. Thirty -eight-year-old Derrick Francis, a Longbow Drive resident, was last seen by his wife leaving home for work the morning of Dec. 28. He never arrived at his Scarborough office and was never heard from again. A hiker made the grisly discovery around supper time while walking through the middle of the valley. Following the meeting, relieved board chairman Audrey Maclean concluded "We've completed our task." Bids to reduce the burden for taxpayers by cashing in a portion of the board's "rainy day" reserve funds to lower the mill rate were defeated by trustees. "Hopefully this budget won't be as harmful as I fear it will be," said Susan Kular, finance committee chairman and Pickering Ward 3 trustee. "I think we have gone too far in making the cuts... Theatre Durham, a community theatre troupe which this vear celebrates its i(kh anniversan, is 'stageless' atter a deal couldn't be reached to renew a lease at its former venue. Dunbarton-Fairport United Church in Pickering. The troupe is now looking to secure a venue where it can perform in the years ahead. So far• the search has proven fruitless. if the group can't obtain suitable perfor- mance space b-% late June, it will disband. The group is now appealing to the community to conte forth in an effort to save it. Theatre Durham is worth saying. Over the years, the group has gained an impressive reputation for staging mainstream productions and for exploring more contro- versial topics in works like The Crucible and Fquus. as it did last season. But. even more importantly. Theatre Durham has pro- vided ample opportunity for local actors, directors and production staff to hone their considerable talents, while enriching the cultural identity of our two communities. We encourage action in the community to aid this wor- thy acting troupe. It would be a great loss to see the cur- tain come down on a significant piece of our local culture. To respond to this editorial call Infosource at nfosoume 683-7040 and dial 5110 ♦You said it... In response to last Friday's editorial on the director of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station being replaced, our readers said: ♦ "Perhaps now it's time for the media to give Ontario Hydro some breathing room to make improvements. Bad publicity is a lot like an avalanche; once it's rolling it takes on a life of its own and anything, serious or not, becomes its own news. It would really be a shame if 2,500 house- holds in our local community lost their source of income for no good reason. Do think about that." ♦ "Just because the director of the Pickering nuclear plant is leaving doesn't mean that we'll be any safer. I never really worried about the danger of living near the plant until these accidents started happening. Now, I wonder a lot more about how safe any of us are." ♦ "I'm tired of reading about the perils of living near this plant. Those reactors, and the Pickering station, are the safest in the world. Nuclear power is here to stay, so let's concentrate on making it better, not shutting it down." pax YRES50E LOUR N8 § f \ :P ` . 11 ti"'•+.:;'•may syi. , Z t. - •' S% i III I li /.' •. `,itrJ3tr.►C•'Aa,l►'rl•T.OIC aRiVI:A v Letters to the editor Art imitates life on the Ajax waterfront To the editor: To burrow from one of Winston Churchill's great speeches: An iron curtain has descended Alas• this time it's not over faraway Europe but rather much closer to home: the Ajax waterfront to be pre- cise. Hitting the wail may have been the feeling many of us lakefront walkers, runners, bikers and roller-bladers expe- rienced when confronted by a six -foot - high wire mesh fence cutting right across the shore's walkway. Being stopped dead in one's tracks can he quite frustrating and might have been avoided had the construction company shown a little more compas- sion and put a gate in the fence to let people through on the weekend when no work is being performed at the con- struction site. Users of the Ajax waterfront trail would have been extremely grateful for being granted some form of consid- eration. One thing, though, that struck me: the re -planting of mature trees up on the hill at the foot of Harwood after their removal from around the present water plant. Such action clearly shows a remark- able concern for the preservation of our natural environment. It may also protect lakeshore walk- ers from the biting cold of howling winter storms. Contemplating the newly -created scenery at the foot of Harwood, Shakespeare's Macbeth comes to mind where the messenger proclaims: "I look'd toward Birnam (make that Ajax water plant), and anon, methought, the The Ajax -Pickering News Advertiser W"pts letters to the editor. It is due time that they be forced, by law, to put their promises in writing, and have their promises witnessed by two other people -- who are not politicians. That way, they cannot say, after being elected, that: 1) They were misquoted, 2) Their words were taken out of con- text, 3) That is not what they meant, or 4) They did not say that! The Pickering man, who has lupus and arthritis and needs a scooter to get around, plans to attend next Monday's meeting of Town Council to ask that some- thing be done to free up dis- abled parking spots for peo- ple who need them. Mr. Martel says he has more than once seen police and bylaw officers ignore viola- tors of disabled parking reg- ulations, and he doesn't understand why. "They just drive by them. They just don't pay attention to it. I've seen it often, at a lot of places," he says. Mr. Martel has a mini- van with a ramp to get his scooter in an out of, but is often unable to find a dis- abled parking space, which is wider than a normal space and which he needs to use his van's ramp. Ile would like to hear from other people who have had similar difficulties, and especially from anyone willing to come out and support him in his prewnia- tion to council. The present tax is structured so that the purchaser pays 1/2 of a per cent on the first $50,000 of their price, another 1 per cent on the next $195,000 and further increases for values greater. Ron Robin- son. President of the Oshawa Durham Home Builders Associ- ation (ODHBA). says this will mean the majori- ty of new home purchasers in Durham Region will receive 100 per cent of their land transfer tax back. According to Mr. Robinson, the tax relief is a welcomed impe- tus when com- bined with increased income resulting from income tax reductions, low interest rates, and the most affordable housing prices seen in many years, that will be the stimu- lus needed to boost consumer confi- dence. ODHBA estimates that with every $1,000 decrease in housing costs, 3,000 families are allowed into the home ownership market. t Must Be Spring! AW THE !YEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY, MAY 10, M&PAGE 19 Entertainment May 1996 y 10, Final curtain for Theatre' Durham if it can't find new stn e D Company appeals to public for performance space in the community BY AL METT STAFF REPORTER PICKER1NG — The curtain may be coming down for the final time on a Pickering -based theatre group if it can't find suitable space to stage its plays by next month. Tbeatre Durham, which celebrated its 10th anniversary of community theatre productions this year is appealing to the public for any low-cost space which can be con- vened into a the- atre for the troupe's upcoming fall season. If space can't be found by late June, the non- profit theatre group may be forced to cancel its 1996-97 season which was to include On Golden Pond, Educating Rita and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? It may well also spell the end of Theatre Durham, which has proved to be valuable in giving training and expe- rience to talented local actors and directors over the years. "We may have to fold the group-, that's a real possi- bility," says Theatre Durham artistic director John Foote. "I think that would leave the Ajax - Pickering area in a lurch. I know there's the Pickering Players, but we do differ- ent work than they do." Foote says T hmm Durham was left without a home when its lease arrangement with Pickering's Dunbarton- Faitpott United Church was not renewed this year. Foote reports Theatre Durham has investigated using a local high school or even an industrial unit for some place where we can leave a set for three theatre on The Esplanade has forced the groups weeks. We have even w adod looked into the possi- bility of using indus- trial space." Ted Castle, a long- time member and actor with Theatre Durham, says the troupe has discussed sharing a theatre with other companies. H `We've gone from being one of the lesser-known theatre groups to one that is gaining a solid reputation...' -- John Foote pt a wut-tut - see attitude, thereby killing the idea of sharing a venue. Foote says the death of Theatre Durham would he a shame as the group has been steadily gaining a reputation for not only putting owever, the Iown on audience-plcwers of Pickering's proposal to eventually develop a such as the works of Neil Simon, but also for Jit It if)it ,-s jot) I it c(i r Ut vvs*,a rte -.+ tackling more controversial plays, such as last season's Equus and The Crucible. "We've gone from being one of the lesser- known theatre groups to one that is gaining a solid reputation. Actors are seeking us out because of our reputation. A lot of actors from across southern Ontario have come to our workshops and to our auditions. 'f'hat's a feath- er in our cap. It says something for the work we do and for the quality of the plays." Anyone who can offer'Ibeatre Durham per- formance space should call Foxe at 985-0611 or Donna Graham, thL groups public relations chair at 619-2833. cos mvt i)•s it u r.<v r it e•rn.s. luKgrtg )- j 1 r 1 i t it r N ry horse rlectronir.s, bed & bit tit hardware . home• improt-e•rrte•nts. ►nrtjor nppliet►tr)•.s - .1 WIAINUMal 35 % kit' i WONDERBRA ` .AM BRAS AND COWROL BRIEFS Selection way vary by sten We have professionally trained fit consultants mo help you find the perfect fit its pbTs•but has SALE ENDS S U N DAY , MAY 12, 1 9 9 6 found the venues "avow Wo Usuitablie, mostly , SEi4RS because of the 1:tpet7 mon, fin,►n Secim Costs associated a o cc with their use. BU S SS y Feature y Gardiner's Duct Cleaning tackles dust to make breathing easier Dust can be more than just an annoyance if you don't do something about it. Not only can it be a constant source of work come cleaning time, but it can also irritate your eyes, throat and cause breathing problems. That's why more and more residential, industrial and commercial customers are calling Gardiner's Duct Cleaning to tackle this problem head on. Sam and his son Scott have been cleaning heating and air conditioning ducts for five years and they advise anyone who has not had them cleaned for a long time to get it done as soon as possible_ It's a procedure that takes veru little time compared amount of time yc enjoy clean dust-fre air in your home and it is further beneficial in that it reduces heating and cooling costs. The large truck- mounted, 18 HF vacuum unit shown the photo above, pz more power for tough jobs they encounter. The procedure for both is simple. Sam first closes off your vents and makes an opening in the main duct. Then, while the vacuum unit sucks air into a holding chamber, a hose is put into the upstairs vents, one at a time, and blows the dust and dirt into the downstairs unit. They also use the air snake method which ensures ducts are completely /•i.'" I Fes• DOC' .✓.. efi tl'• X11 { 41iz8Z3292 rid of dust and debris. The air snake method consists of a device being inserted into the ductwork while a mobile head reaches into every inch of duct work to dislodge dust and debris. "Dust will not only affect your health but ruin furniture and draperies," says Sam. "Having your ducts cleaned cuts down on cleaning and adds life to your furniture, carpets and drapes." Sam also provides chimney sweeping at competitive prices with service that is always friendly and courteous. Caps and screens are available to keep out unwanted pets. Presently, Gardiner's Duct Cleaning is offering a SPRING SPECIAL `eaturino a hook-up for 539.95 S5 per vent and a nney sweeping for 19.95. Customers from Markham to Scarborough to Oshawa have relied on their service and are now enjoying a healthy home environment. Isn't it time you did too? Why Advertise in Focus on Business Durham businesses wanting to increase their profile and sales volume find that being part of Focus on Business advertising feature definitely has its advantage. Over the last few years a great many businesses - of all sizes - have found that investment in the AjaxlPickering News Advertiser's and Oshawa/Whitby This Week's Focus on Business feature have generated extra phone calls that likely would not have otherwise occurred. How do you get involved? When a company make a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the page, it also receives a full feature story, complete with pictures. The story reinforces the advertisement, enabling the business to explain in depth its product and/or service, philosophy, goals, special promotions and even a historical overview.
