K -Mart store employees around the country recently launched a fund-raising drive on behalf of their British Columbia co-worker Shannon Steele, who is the mother of little Amanda. Amanda, who lives in Kamloops, B.C., is suffer- ing from a brain tumor. With her illness exacting a heavy financial toll on fam- ily, an outpouring of aid has come forward from the Kamloops community. And the compassion has stretched cross-country all the way to Pickering. Employees at the Picker- ing Town Centre K -Mart store launched their own fund-raising drive in recent weeks and have raised about $300 through bake and craft sales as well as personal dona- tions, says store manager Rick Cruz. Last week, a jar showing Amanda's picture and explaining her plight was put on the counter of a sm cash regis- ter in the hopes of drawing dona- tions from cus- tomers, who soon filled the jar with change and small bills amounting to about $80, says Mr. Cruz. Saturday evening, the jar was stolen. It was found by workers in the perking lot, emptied of its contents. "It's not so much the money Wort hurts, it's the sentiments of it. This sick little girl's picture was right there on the jar and (he) just took the money like that and did- n't think twice about it," says Mr. Cruz. Store surveil- lance cameras caught the thief tK , on video. "He was just hanging around the (check- out) desk looking around and when the (worker) was busy and not looking, he just grabbed it and walked out. It's crystal clear on tape," he says, adding the video has been turned over to police who are investigat- ing. Stunned store employees are .,really hurt" by the theft, Mr. Cruz says, but have already begun rallying to drum up more donations for the girl's family. Durham Regional Police Staff Sergeant Bob Peacock says such an act of thievery is rare. "It takes someone pretty low down on the totem pole in relation to self-esteem to do something like this. It does happen, but certainly not often." he says. The suspect is described as white, between 35 and 40 and 5'6" to 5'8" THE NEWS ADVERTISER THURSDAY, APRIL4,1996-PA(J.3 24 Month -$299* '96 Jetta GL 24 Month Lease Special Include • A • conditioning • A,arm system • Dual aIr bags • P^wer Iorks • P•emlum stereo • A7i3nred safe•y 24 Month -$249* '96 Golf CL 24 Month Lease Special ncluae: D -_;xe sound system • P -we' locks . 24 V*r Roadside • CFC tree air Ass,stance condiUormg system Advanced safety system • ar. ^C11 more • 24 ^r roads de assistance m&rterwce • A a- systeT n c^Tor on %1 wroth _. • S+S.ri owr p „. . a,os Ag. Proceeds from the auction will go to Operation Life- line, the hospital's campaign to raise $1 million for med- ical equipment in its operating rooms, recovery room, day surgery and intensive care units. Much of the suc- cess of the event can be attributed to Ajax and Picker- ing's "great com- munity spirit", according to hospi- tal foundation executive director Shirley Freek. The auction held last week to raise money for the local hospital was an operation carried out with sur- gical precision. at the hands of skilled practitioners. And everyone in the communities of Ajax and Pickering assisted in the success of the procedure. A record $70,000 was raised during the annual auction, organized to help raise Sl million for Operation Lifeline, a campaign to buy medical equipment in operating and recovery suites, day surgery and intensive care units. The hospital's ambitious goal will one da} be realized, ensuring that standards of care are main- tained and that qualit% health care is delivered effi- ciently, professionally and swiftly. The community, through its volunteer efforts to run the auction, its participation in bidding on the various items on the block, and through the support of the business sector, all had a hand in seeing that the future remains bright for the local hospital. Ultimately, it's the people who are served by Ajax and Pickering General Hospital who will be the true beneficiaries of these fund-raising efforts. B% actively supporting the efforts of the hospital, we are also helping ourselves. And there's nothing at all wrong with that. Furthermore... It was a long time coming, but worth the wait. Now, it's vour turn to make sure that the Pickering/Ontario Hydro Liaison Committee works as it monitors the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. Though it's unfortunate an accident at the nuclear plant provided the motivation for striking such a com- mittee, it is still vitally important for each and every one of us living in the shadow of the plant to stay informed and speak out. The committee is expected to meet on a quarterly basis, the next opportunity for residents to present their views takes place Thursday, April 18. Take advantage of the opportunity to find out more about nuclear power, the procedures in place to deal with emergencies and the ways we can improve plant operations. We all have a stake in our individual and collective safety. This committee is there for you to learn more, suggest changes, and perhaps effect change. You have the power. All levels of govern- ment should be passing on tax decreases. No matter how small, decreases send a message and put dollars into the hands of the people who, not only paid therm, but are best at spending them. Durham Region chairman Jim Witty's attempt to sell us on the idea that a mere $6 tax increase will help to keep 28 police offi- cers is not acceptable. We cannot afford the taxes we are paying now. The figure of $700,000 for the salaries of extra officers is questionable, but regardless of that, it is still additional dollars out of the economy. To help the economy, put $700,000 back into the hands of taxpayers. We should allow people who want addi- tional police, etc. to simply pay more in property taxes. That would indicate true interest. Durham Council should have set an example by decreasing taxes for all indus- tries and homeowners. Floating the idea that "We wouldn't want to lose 28 officers for a mere one per cent" is unfair. If the officers are a high priority than the amount should be transferred from a lower priority. Besides, someone has to begin to realize that we can't afford it. In the past, we have attempted to solve problems by raising taxes. This creates economic problems. Personally, I am insulted when a politi- cian attempts to sell me an increase by telling me I will have to do without and then selecting an item such as police protection. Should we be too embarrassed to say 'no"? Tax increases have slowly turned into to tax freezes, I admit. But it is decreases that are most needed now. Governments have become so used to increases that they cannot seem to break the cycle. Paul Crawford Pickering The Ajax -Pickering News Advertiser '`7iccepts letters to the editor. Opinions expressed dw®e of the writer and not those of The News Dumping on litterbugs To the editor: I'm a resident of the Westney Heights area of Ajax and an avid cyclist. With great anticipation, I eagerly awaited the opportu- nity for my first spring ride. This opportuni- ty presented itself last weekend, so I saddled up and headed out. I rode north on Salem Road and was hor- rified by the amount of garbage which lit- tered the roadside. It was not just the odd coffee cup or fast-food tray. Some uncaring and disrespectful citizens used this beautiful countryside to dump such things as tires, garbage bags and tree clippings. I continued in disgust, riding west to find another roadside dump where more garbage bags, car seats, tires, and a veritable cornu- copia of refuse had been tossed. I turned south down Church Street and headed home. Church Street turned out to be the worst yet. As the Pickering dump is only a few minutes away, there is no conceivable excuse for this littering. To the ignorant bumpkins responsible for these dumps or anyone who would consider any such littering, please give it a second thought; respect your fellow Ajacians and keep our community clean. Why Advertise in Focus on Business Durham businesses wanting to increase their profile and sales volume find that being part of Focus on Business advertising feature definitely has As advantage. Over the last few years a great many businesses - of all sizes - have found that investment in the Ajax/Pickering News Advertiser's and Oshawa/Whitby This Week's Focus on Business feature have generated extra phone calls that likely would not have otherwise ofxurred. How do you get involved? When a company make a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the page, it also receives a full feature story, complete with pictures. The story reinforces the advertisement, enabling the business to explain in depth is product and/or service, philosophy, goals, special promotions and even a historical overview. Unless the business chooses otherwise. everything is done by the newspaper's staff: the ad design, story interview and writing, plus the taking of the photographs. All the business needs to do is prepare for the increased sales volume. For more information call Janice at 683-0707.
