That was the message deliv- ered by most speakers at the Pick- ering Race Relations Forum Tuesday night commemorating the March 21 International Day for the Elimination of Racial Dis- crimination. Approximately 120 people attended the event in the Council chamber at Town hall, which was sponsored by the Advisory Committee on Race Relations and Equity established by the Town. Keynote speaker for the evening was Bromley Armstrong, a Pickering resident who has been active in race relations and human rights for 49 years. A commissioner with the Ontario Human Rights Commission and a member of the Labour Relations Board, he has been honored with both the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario. Cyril Brown, left, and Alma Thomas were tions forum at the Pickering Town hall among members of the Ebony Folklore Tuesday. Singers who performed during a race rela- photo by Carl Ferencz ."Racial discrimination is a reality in Canada," Mr. Arm- strong told the forum, explain- ing it usually takes the form of workplace tensions, problems in schools, name calling, deface- ment of religious property, hate slogans and the activities of white supremacist groups. Mr. Armstrong, who was born in Jamaica but has lived in Canada since 1947, noted he personally has received all kinds of cards and leaflets "telling people who look like me to go back where they carne from. `"Iilese forums are necessary. Whenever we can come togeth- er to talk about problems, it's progress. Mr. Armstrong maintained both education and legislation are required to create equity and improve race relations, and recounted the battle for equity and human rights legislation in Ontario and the opposition it encountered over the years. The forum included presentations from members of the advisory cotnmit- tee, which includes representatives of the Town, the Durham Region Police Service, the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board, the Durham Board of Education and the Social Development Council of Ajax - Pickering. Each described the programs undertaken by their organization to improve race relations in Pickering. There was also entertainment to keep the mood positive and a session of group discussions to allow public par- ticipation. As well, the Town introduced its new Harassment Hurts Us All brochure, which will be available at schools, Town facilities, local libraries and the Pickering Recreation Complex. The brochure is designed to increase awareness of racial harassment issues and provide people with information on ways to deal with it, and includes a list of phone numbers and organizations that can help. Advisory committee co-chairman and Town councillor Dave Ryan said in an interview the principal goals of the forum were to educate the public and encourage communication on race relations issues. "For a IN of the people here, frankly, f racism' we're preaching to the converted" he noted, but added members of the public who have not been involved will get the message through the media. "What you're seeing here is the spirit of Pickering. You're seeing the spirit of co-operation, of enthusiasm, of energy. It's the reason our committee exists" Mr. Ryan believes it's important for the Town and other local organizations to become involved in race relations because it's an issue that needs to be addressed everywhere. "I personally do not believe Picker- ing is a hotbed of racism. But I acknowledge that, as m the rest of soci- ety, there is racism in Pickering. We've had incidents; we do not have a trend." Durham Council voted 21-6 Wednesday, with five councillors absent, to approve the 1996 budget passing on an average tax increase of 0.8 per cent. However, under the equalized assessment Sys- tem used by the Region, taxes differ in each of the eight municipalities. In Pickering, for example. regional taxes are rising 2.4 per cent. About 20 per cent of your tax hill goes to the Region so, based on a tax hill of $3.000, Durham will get $600. The Region will spend about $402 million in 1996, with prop- erty taxes cover- ing about $99.6 million. The rest will come from provincial grants, user fees and ` • reserve accounts. D u r h a m Region Chairman Jim Wittv says, "It's a reason- able, sensible budget. I'm pleased with the strong support shown by region- al council. "I went to each of the eight area municipalities and I was pro- moting a one -per cent increase in Region taxes. It's slightly lower than that. I'm a happy camper." Of the 55 peo- ple who spoke to Mr. Witty direct- ly about the bud- get, 52 supported a tax increase of about $5 1f it meant keeping police officers on the street, he reports. In response to last Friday's editorial on tough decisions ahead for Durham school board trustees, our readers said: ' ♦ "I believe parents would he willing to pay a fee on a monthly basis to have their kids transported safely back and forth from school." ♦ -I'd like to tell the trustees... not to even think of a tax increase. The $10 million increase in spending suggested over last year in the draft budget is ludicrous. It should be a $10 million decrease. There's no way we can stand for another tax grab by the school system." ♦ "As far as I'm concerned the trustees are the ones at fault. March 13 1 am writing to comment on the week - Iv column by Larraine Roulston called Recycler's Report in the Ncws Ad\ ertiser. This is just the kind of journalism that our communit} needs to help us learn to stem the damas'e our consumim-, socia\ has inflicted on the environment. The March 13 column was especially cnhi*htenim-,. Mrs. Roulston went bcvond what must journalists do to not only report on a vital political issue -- the dan- ger that Ontario's Environment Assessment process will be eliminated -- but she encouraged readers to make their opinions known to the key politicians involved. Her urgent tone and message encour- aged this reader to write the federal and provincial environment ministers. The environment, which is really the land, water and air that all living things depend on, is truly in danger of further degradation if the pro -industry agenda of the Harris and Chretien governments is allowed to proceed without input by citi- zens and community groups. As well as writing and phoning politi- cians, another way Pickering citizens can become involved is to join a local group such as the one Mrs. Roulston heads -- the Pickering Waste Reduction Committee. This group, of which I am also a member, is active in education and may become more political as the need for immediate action to protect the environ- ment becomes greater. Here's wishing more journalists would encourage readers to get involved with issues. Thank you for allowing the Recycler's Report to he read. To prove my point, let us look at the following equa- tion before harmonization: I'm going out with my wife to buy a new vehicle priced at $20,0(X) and I have a $6.000 trade-in. Here is the catch: I will have to pay the full GST on the $20,000 -- not on the difference -- and of course I will have to pay PST on the dif- ference, which is $14,000 plus $100 air tax after harmonization. I will have to pay seven per cent, plus eight per cent, which is 15 per cent on the same $20,(X)0, but no tax at all on the differ- ence of $14,000. What is the result? The vehicle will cost you about $250 more plus $100 air tax. I would advise people to call their MP and rail against harmonization. What did Sheila Copps say'? And I quote: :1 will resign if the GST is not scrapped by November, '95..." Sheila. we are waiting.... Area angler's team Canadian champs in ice fishing derby By Al. RIVETT SPORTS REPORITR AJAX — It was cold, it was windy, it was miser- able for the most part. But fishing through a hole in the ice on Lake Simcoe last month was certainly worth it for an Ajax man and his angling cohorts. Peter Gos, 44, along with brother Rudy Gos. 30, of Woodbridge. Frank Beyilacqua, 43, of Brampton and his brother Danny Bevilacqua. 36, of Etobicoke, captured the Canadian Ice Fishing Championship on Jackson's Point on Lake Simcoe. The four -man entre cap- tained by Peter Gos caught 311 fish in three days and scored 1,284 points to take the national championship. For their efforts, the four won the S10.000 first prize in the winter fishing derby which attracted scores of ice fishermen from across Canada. Gos says ice fishing is not like any other form of angling, and it's definitely not for the faint of heart. "You not only have to tx, a good angler, but you have to be tough. There are no cozy fish huts out there: huts are not permitted. You can't use electronic fish finders, you can't use gaffes (giant fish hooks) and you can only fish with one line with a maximum of three hooks," says Gos, who's been ice fishing for the pact eight years. Each team of angler,, fished for five hours a day during the championships. On the first day, teams had to fish in deep water for such species as trout, whitefish and pike, with points awarded for each inch -length of the fish. The second day. the fishermen angled in shallow waters for such fish as perch and smelt with two points awarded for the catch and two points for the release (all fish were released after being caught). On the third and final day, the teams could angle for any type of fish in intermediate depth. After a slow first day when the Gos team didn't catch a single fish, the four caught fire, catching almost all of their 311 fish on the second day of the competi- tion. Only one fish was hooked by the Gos squad on the final day. Just when it appears that some stability is finally setting in. BANG, we get the proverbial shaft again. Yes, mortgage rates have risen again. Why? It's anyone's guess. Could it possibly be that the financial institutions feel that their profits are low, and they simply need more" ( I guess a BILLION +++ doesn't go as far as it use to.) WHAT CAN I DO? In one simple word, CONSOLIDATE. <_et as many of your debts rolled into one low payment, and with the monthly savings• put some awav in an .Iccount that is not easily accessible. You will be amazed at how quickly this will add up. BEAXNARE! Frequent credit inquiries loggged on our credit bureau can do serious damage to your ability to obtain credit. Most lenders use a credit , coring system to determine your credit worthiness, and this score is dramatically reduced if there have been more than TWO inquiries in the past six months. So if you are going to attempt to arrange financing on your own, be very careful on how you go about it. Make general inquiries first, make sure the lender feels there is a very good chance of getting an approval before you make a formal application. WHY THE MORTGAGE FACTORY? With more than TWENTY YEARS experience, both the LENDER base and the KNOWLEDGE base are extensive. We are not satisfied until 7 tit, 1F.%%,s %in,t R,rISFR FRIDAN, %fAR('H 24• i096.P`A*(:; `2:' / Advertising ISSIN Feature US we have obtained the absolute best deal available for your particular situation. ( With both the best rates and payment plans available.) On first mortgages we always have rates available at one half percent lower than the posted major lenders, and this Loes for all terms. Consolidation loans up to 560.000 are available. A new second mortgage plan is available, up to 100',(- financing, but both the credit and income must be eood. IN CONCLUSION 1 personally feel that this recent upward swing in rates, is a 60 to 90 day Glitch, with no to<_ical reason behind it. Late spring_ should be the time that rates will ease off slightly. I do not suggest that you wait for a potential drop in rates as my thinking is based on economic logic, and we all know that logic seldom comes into play as far as most lenders are concerned Till next time Glenn A. More arrests made in RCMP drug, alcohol sweep By Chris Bovie D(JRHAM STAFF DURHAM -- RCMP have made more arrests related to a major drug and alcohol smuggling network with con- nections in the region. At press time 11 more people had been apprehend- ed, bringing the total to 48. No Durham residents are induded m the latest batch of arrests, but 13 people from Durham Region were charged prieviously. Another seven warrants. are outstand- ing. The arrests and seizures were made during the course of a 14 -month investigation by RCMP officers from BowmanviHe and Kingston in co-operation with other enforcement agencies, including Durham Region Police. Five separate smuggling organizations with ties to Durham, Peterborough, Cornwall, Montreal and Toronto were uncovered. Police have now confiscated 13,766 (1.75 lithe) bottles of liquor with an estimated street value of over $546,000; 1,463 cartons of cigarettes with an estimated revenue loss of $32,186; 35 vehicles valued at over $210,000 and one loaded hand gun. Offi- cers also seized 300 units of anabolic steroids with a street value of $11,700. The handgun, and a large quantity of the contraband, was recovered at an Ingelside residence. RCMP Kingston Proceeds of Crime Unit is seeking a restraining order on the property, valued at $100,000. A number of those charged are scheduled to appear in a Oshawa provin- cial court May 22 and May 30. times. Community founda- tions, according to Ms. Lafarga, receive donations from members of the com- munity, which are then invested in mutual funds, treasury bills etc. The proceeds from these investments are given to groups for the betterment of the community. The original donations are never spent, says Ms. Lafarga. Although CFDR was formed in 1994, it has not been able to give any grants because the group is still starting up, says Ms. Lafarga.
