DURHAM STAFF DURHAM - A stike at two brake plants in Ohio is having a crippling effect on Durham Region's auto industry. Almost 11,000 employcei at General Motors of Canada plants in Oshawa are on indefinite layoff, hundreds more workers at supplier plants are also off the job, with more cuts antici- pated- GM's ntici- G M's 6,500 car plant workers have been off the job since Friday, while the truck plant's 3,500 employees have been without work since Tuesday's afternoon shift. Another 830 workers at the fabrication plant have been laid off. In addition, 1,500 GM workers in Ste. Therese, Que. are also without work due to the strike by 3,000 workers at GM's brake plants in Dayton, Ohio. The main issue in the Dayton walkout is the outsourcing of work traditionally done by union members. The strike, now in its seared week at Delphi Chassis Systems, has created a shortage of brake part-, for GM opera- tions in North America and the impact is starting to spread to parts plants which produce materials for the giant automaker. The strike is costing GM and parts companies millions of dollars in lost production. GM produces 3,200 cars and trucks daily at its Oshawa opera - 6". And while police long ago concluded `The Lost Boys' like- ly died as a result of a March 17, 1995 boating accident, the fate of the youths still remains a mystery without any concrete evidence. Presumed dead are Jay Boyle, a Pickering father who was 17 at the time; Chad Smith, 18, and Robbie Rum- bold[, 17, both also of Pickering; Danny Higgins, 16, of Ajax; Jamie Lefebvre, 17, of Scarbor- ough and formerly of Ajax; and Michael Cummins, 17, of Oshawa No bodies have been recov- ered, nor has there been any sign of the fibreglass, imitation Boston Whaler motor boat the boys are believed to have taken from a Liverpool Road marina the night they disappeared. 'lire frustration in the voice of Constable Mark Sheridan, who was involved with the investiga- tion since it began and is respon- sible for its continuous monitor- ing, is unmistakable as he dis- cusses the current status of what is the most painful probe he's been involved with during his 14 years on the force. "As a police officer when you investigate you strive to find answers and we haven't been able to provide that. And that's the most difficult par for myself in dealing with the six families and all their friends, that I don't have those answers," says the constable. "It's been an emotional inves- tigation to deal with, to say the least, and it's one you hope you never have to become involved with anything like again" While the police investigation remains "in limbo" — aside from several unconfirmed med sight- ings over the months, no new information or leads have come forward — Const. Sheridan is quick to state that the case isn't closed. Nor will it ever be until answers are found, however long that may take. "The file is open and if any information comes in we will deal with it. But it's been pretty quiet the last few months" Aside from occasional con- tact with authorities in the I1nit- ed States "to indicate we're still looking for evidence if anything comes up," the investigation is inactive. Despite the belief "there was an accident in the lake and nobody survived," Const. Sheri- dan refuses to rule out the possi- bility of "something unexpected. "I couldn't say the door is completely closed when we're talking about six individuals' lives. You still have to leave the door open for anything because strange things have been known to happen," he says. So many questions but very few answers DURHAM — Why has there been no discovery of any bodies one year after six area teenagers disappeared on Lake Ontario off the Pickering shone March 17, 1995? Or even a piece of clothing or a ball cap? (At least two of the youths are believed to have been wearing such caps.) Why has there been no sign of the imitation Boston Whaler boat (other than the gas can belonging to the boat found floating on the American side of Lake Ontario)? Why hasn't here been a trace of the water tricycle (which was thought to have been spotted bobbing on the surface of the lake from a helicopter during one search but was never found) which police believe the boys took out for a joyride the night they went missing? So many questions, and just as many passible explanations. `"That's what is so frustrating, it's all speculation. We can look at all the theories, but that's just what they are — theories," says Durham Regional Police Con- stable Marie Sheridan, in charge of the investigation into the dis- appearance of "Iihe lost Boys'. Frigid water temperatures in the deepest part of the lake — which reaches more than 600 feet in areas — could help pre- vent a body from floating to the surface or being washed ashore, be explains urnxxnfortably. lie admits, however, "it is somewhat of a mystery. I did expect something would have surfaced last summer when the temperatures got warmer, but there have been cases where people have disappeared in the water and never been found." As for the boat. "that's anoth- er bit of a mystery. It could be floating somewhere just belo%k the surface and being green in Loved ones turn to psychic By STEPHEN SHAW STAFF RFYOR7FR DURHAM — The families of six missing teenagers who vanished without a trace one year ago Sunday have turned to a well-known American psychic in their quest for answers. Clairvoyant Dorothy Allison, known in the U.S. for her involvement in prominent police homicide investiga- tions, has been working with the teens' parents in recent weeks in an effort to find new clues which may help to deter- mine the fate of -nx Lost Boys' . Following massive land, air and water seater Nast year, Durham police con- cluded the teens likely died as a result of a boating accident. "She has given ins what she thinks are important clues as to where to look," ,adds Marie Smith, mother of another missing boy, Chad. Ms Aftw told the boys' -p uam she believes "answers can be fbilua' near the waterfront area surrounding the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital - "We just wanted to hear what she would say. I want to believe, but I just don't know," Ms. Boyle says softly. "We're just grabbing at anything to try and get some answers. Some of us rally believe." Familia and friends are planning to conduct a search — concentrated around the psychiatric hospital's lakefront — the last weekend of the month weather permitting in the hopes of finding any hints of what happened to the teem. ---------- - - - - -- QUARTEDA AL,RAM CANADA'S LARGEST HORSE SHOW I March 20, 21, 22, 23 i 24, 1996 I 1 COUSEUM, E7MYT10N til ACE, TORONTO I I Five full days of horse show e=tement and fun for the whole family. • 1.000 horses in Western & Enosh classes. The six are believed to have stolen a 14 -foot, fibreglass, imitation Boston Whaler and water tricycle from a nearby manna and headed onto the cold, choppy waters of Lake Ontario for a "joyride". 0 Saturday, March 18 — Early in the morning the boys are reported missing to police by one of the teens' girlfriends. Later that day a massive land, air and water search is launched. Canadi- an Forces Base in Trenton dispatches a Labrador search and rescue helicopter and Her- cules aircraft, Durham Regional Police comb the shoreline while Metro Police Marine Unit and Coast Guard vessels cruise the lake. While a water tricycle is spotted in the water from heli- copter, efforts later to locate it are unsuccessful. 0 Wednesday, Manch 22 — After covering 5,000 square miles of the lake and finding no clues as to the boys' whereabouts, the search is scaled down. The Coast Guard and military withdraw their services. O Wednesday, Manch 29 — A five -gallon gas can is found floating on the U.S. side of the lake near Wilson, New York. It is later identified as belonging to the stolen vessel the teens are believed to have taken. 0 Friday, March 31 — Police divers discover an empty beer bottle near one of two channel markers in the lake at the mouth of French- man's Bay. It is the same brand the youths were believed to be drinking the night they vanished That same day U.S. authorities conduct mas- sive water and shoreline searches for the teens. For the first time police publicly state their belief the boys died. 0 June — Police divers continue searches under water after a boater reports seeing a sunken boat and a floating body. The divers find nothing. Councillors and department heads win our commen- dation for coming up with a budget that doesn't put an additional burden on taxpayers but pretty much main- tains the level of service. Not an easv task given the fact that provincial trans- fer payments to the municipality have been cut drasti- cally and are expected to be reduced even more. The politicians and senior staff have done a remark- able job to hold the line on spending. especially since just two months ago councillors were presented a pre- liminary budget by Town staff that would have seen taxes skyrocket by I _5 per cent just to maintain services at existing levels. It's too bad the hard work that civic leaders put in to come up with this no-frills budget is somewhat clouded by the secrecv surrounding the process. Pickering residents interested in how their tax dol- lars are spent. and the media which is simply an exten- sion of and a messenger to townsfolk. had a hard time following budget deliberations since documents given to the public and the press were completely different from those given the politicians. That made it almost impossible for the public to find out where cuts were being made and for the press to report on those cuts. This lack of openness breeds suspicion in the minds of the public and creates the impression that Town offi- cials are trying to hide from residents how they're spending tax dollars. Unfortunately, when it comes to politics, the perfor- mance of our leaders can be overshadowed by the per- ception they create. Such is the case in Pickering• where Town Council and staff deserve an A for their efforts and an F for openness. eft' To respond to this editorial call Infosource at n` f- ogoVrce 683- 7040 and dial 5104 ♦You said it... In response to last Friday's editorial on federal pension reform and the parallels between that and the recent teachers' `tool kit', one reader said: ♦ "I'd like to point out that teachers' unused sick days do not go toward early retirement as stated in your edi- torial. But, they do contribute toward a gratuity at the time of retirement. Every day a teacher is absent from the classroom it costs the school board $140 in supply teacher salaries. Therefore, I think that any incentive to reduce absenteeism is a cost saving. I'm sure most people in Pickering know it is quite possible for a person to care about several problems. Councillor Senis and most Pickering councillors are undoubtedly working on a variety of mat- ters for their constituents at any given time. Exotic dancers have spoken out about lap dancing. I am not the only exotic dancer who has spoken publicly and who has paid a price in doing so. And other peo- ple have confirmed what we've said. Public health officials, including Durham Region's own associate medical officer of health, have confirmed there is a serious public health danger. The dangers are to dancers, their customers, and their customers' wives. Even if all dancers and all customers gave fully informed and completely voluntary consent to the risks — and that is far from reality — the pub- lic health dangers would still be such that lap dancing would have to be banned. Anthony McCann seems to have a strange idea of what a free society is. People are not free to live or work in health and safety when they are put at risk of dis- ease and violence. The courts have confirmed that the bod- ies with authority to deal with this problem are the municipalities, like the Town of Pickering. That means it is up to the Town of Pickering to do its part by passing a bylaw. Katharine Goldberg Toronto The Ajax -Pickering News Advertiser ecepts letters to the editor. As a solution to this problem (I am con- vinced it is not confined to the route of my walk), I would like to suggest: Have wel- fare recipients recruited to pick up and clean up. Such a project would have two immediate benefits, i.e. welfare recipients could responsibly argue they are again working for their pay check and; Pickering would receive a much-needed face lift Should the welfare people reject such a scheme my other proposal would involve those persons languishing in our warm and cozy jails with their exercise programs and three squares per day. With today's sophis- ticated monitoring systems they could be strategically dropped off early in the morn- ing equipped with a sufficient number of garbage and recycling bags and picked up in time for their lunch (I wouldn't suggest we attempt to over work them — the last thing this province needs is another strike). Hopefully, I am not being too naive to think either of the above proposals would work. Warren Barnesmtorms foes to win provincial swim medals PICKERING — A Pickering Swim Club mem- ber 'Barnes-tormed' the com- petition to win three medals at the Provincial Short Course Championship Swim .Meet in Ottawa recently. The meet attracts top swim- mers age 14 and younger from across the province. Four Pickering swimmers met the tough qualifying standard to compete at the short course championships. Warren Barnes, 10, was outstanding at the high-cali- bre meet, winning three silver medals in the 50 -metre, 100m and 200m breaststroke events. Each race was a hard-fought battle between Barnes and Jonathan Long of London. The two swimmers were evenly matched, but Long touched the wall first to win the gold medal in all three breaststroke events. However, Barnes knocked seven seconds off his previ- ous best time in the 200m breast and has now qualified for the 11 -and -12 -year-old provincials. He also set new club records and achieved new personal best times in his other events at the meet. Eric Gauthier, 14, qualified for five events. His best fin- ish was in the 1,500m freestyle where he finished 20th in the province. He swam the 60 lengths of the pool in a personal best time and established a new club record. Gauthier had to recover quickly from this tiring event to participate in the 40m free in which he placed 21st, also in a new best time. In each of the 100m and 200m butterfly events and the 400m individ- ual medley, Gauthier finished in the top 28 in the province. Colin Russell, 11. achieved new personal best times while competing in five events. Russell attained the goal he had set for himself in the 100m free with a time of one minute 05.39 seconds. He also had respectable finishes in the 50m and 200m free events and the 100m and 200m fly races. After making the tough qualifying standards for provincials at the last possi- ble opportunity, Lauren Campbell, 12, swam two strong races in the 100m and 200m breast events. She came from behind to win her heat in the 100m race. Campbell was in the top 30 in the province in both events. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Tech Weld 2000 series of vinyl windows which you're free to operate and you'll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. "After being in this business for 18 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market," says Wayne. "They're triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware. - if you desire, you can choose the Low -E Glass which filters out the ultra violet rays keeping your home k cooler in the summer and eliminate the fading of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty and a 10 year guarantee on the installation. Wayne would also like his customers to know that he does all of the estimates personally, eliminating the cost of a salesperson. Durham Window and Doors do all their own installations, which ensures that every customers gets a high quality job done at the best possible price." Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King St. W. in Oshawa or phone (905) 579-2222.
