Federally. Finance Minister Paul Martin has introduced pension reform that will affect all Canadians as they grew older. in the Ontario education s} stem, the provincial Progressive Consen atiyes have opened the door to negoti- ate new sick day agreements. Though not exactl% a "pen- sion" issue. marry current agreements allow educators to apply accumulated unused days toward carp retirements. What each of these gmernment initiatives touch on. however. is the fundamental change in the way we are heing told to plan for our individual futures. And we all must support these changes. painful as they ma, be. if," c are to eventually eliminate: government deficit, and debt. The provincial Tortes are cleark more asserti%e than the Ljberal part% in their attempts to attack deficits. But both paries -- different as the% ma% be in their ideology and tactics -- are encouraging Canadians to rel% less on gmernment for their retirement and more on themselves. This is a time of fundamental change and Canadians must he willing to adapt. It js not gtxxi enouch for us to expect the policies -- and politics -- of the past as we demand a vision for tomorrow. With our ongoing support and a continuation of current fiscal goals. we can sur\ t%e this period and be a stronger nation for it. Pensions are a small part of the w hole picture. But they do ha%e an important symholic place in the path our future takes. We must become our own guides as we travel that path, and look less to government as a beacon. loot To respond to this editorial call Infosource at nfosource 683-70.1/1 and dial 5104 ♦You said it... Both stressed that they worked an excessive number of hours and would welcome a 9-5 work day. These cxces- siye hours are caused by a pile of extracurricular actjyities which cuts into class preparation. The obvious solution is not to stretch themselves so thin, and persuade their colleagues to share in these activities. And in case they answer that this is already the case. I cannot accept that all teachers work the same schedule as these two. I see it every day through personal observation -- teachers coming home at 4 p.m. So what would happen if preparation time were shortened or eliminated'? Neither writer ventured a comment on why prep time is needed today and was not needed when 1 went to school. How did teachers plan before prep time became fashionable? One of the writers also makes the claim that based on a 50 -week year, he estimates to have worked 44 hours a week, or 2,200 hours a year. This, by the way, is roughly the standard for a normal employee in Ontario. But as teachers only work 38 weeks (nine months) in a year, this would translate into a 58 -hour work week. I challenge the school sys- tem to confirm that all, or even a majori- ty, work these hours. Whatever the merits of either side in this discussion, it is apparent that things cannot continue the way they are. Costs are out of hand, the taxpayer cannot and will not stand for automatic tax increases to feed the insatiable school bureaucracy, and cuts have to be made. Paul Vidlak Ajax Perhaps Province should be our auto insurers To the editor: Recently I have heard grumblings from auto insurance companies about the fact that the Harris government is rewrit- ing some of the policies instituted by the Rae regime. One is to allow larger lawsuits. The insurance companies are crying, and say- ing how insurance premiums will have to rise by as much as 12 per cent to com- pensate for this huge increase in payouts. Just a darn minute here; I didn't see rates drop by up to 12 per cent (or by any amount, for that matter) when the amounts of possible lawsuits were reduced by the NDP government! Maybe the government should take over the auto insurance business alto- gether and put them out of business alto- gether. Why Advertise in Focus on Business Durham businesses wanting to increase their profile and sales volume find that being part of Focus on Business advertising feature definitely has its advantage. Over the last few years a great many businesses - of all sizes - have found that investment in the Ajax/Pickering News Advertiser's and Oshawa/Whitby This Week's Focus on Business feature have generated extra phone calls that likely would not have otherwise occurred. How do you get involved? When a company make a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the page, it also receives a full feature story, complete with pictures. The story reinforces the advertisement, enabling the business to explain in depth its product and/or service, philosophy, goals, special promotions and even a historical overview. Unless the business chooses otherwise, everything is done by the newspaper's staff: the ad design, story interview and writing, plus the taking of the photographs. All the business needs to do is prepare for the increased sales volume. For more information call Janice at 683-0707.
