But Ajax -Pickering General Hospi- tal president Bruce Cliff says his institution is asking the ministry to reconsider its cut here in light of the restructuring that has occurred at the hospital since the 1993/94 budget year, on which the funding reduction has been based. The hospital's budget has been cut by seven per cent for 1996/97, which will mean a reduction of about $1.9 million from the $27.7 million it received last year. Budget cuts inflicted on hos- pitals across the province range from about 2.5 1 r4V per cent to seven per cent under a formula based largely on each hospital's cost of Bruce service per Cliff patient in 1993/94, the last figures available when the cuts were calculated. Mr. Cliff describes the funding reduction to APGH as "dishearten in i-,. "Our current cost per case is where it should be. The hospital through its restructuring efforts in the last few years has made major improvements. If we were subjected to the formula today they wouldn't be taking that amount of money away from us." In 1993/94, explains Mr. Cliff, APGH's patient volumes were down and costs were up because it was in the middle of a building program as well as having lost a number of spe- cialists. Now, he adds, its cost per case and length of stay figures would be "well within acceptable range" and below provincial and national aver- ages. "We're discussing the situation with the ministry and we are hopel'ul they'll give us some assistance. If we're subjected to the full seven -per cent cut it could have an impact on services." He says it's "a little early to tell" what that impact would be. Mr. Clitf-expects to hear back from the ministry within about three weeks on whether it will reduce the cutback in recognition of the changes that have taken place at APGH, and whether it will give the local hospital a share of the $25 million in extra funding which has been set aside for hospitals in high-growth areas such as Durham. "I'm optimistic that they'll do something to recognize the aclhieve- ments of the hospital and to assist us. I don't think they would do anything ,i.sao-, that would put us in an untenable position." In a statement released Tuesday, the Hospital Council of Durham Region welcomed the establishment of the $25 million fund for high- growth -area hospitals, but said it more permanent way of dealing with growth will have to be Found. Nikki Liphardt, 17, of Ajax, Jaime Rawlings, 17, Bantam Raiders drop playoff series to Oshawa AJAX-PICKERING — The Ajax -Picker- ing Raiders Julie's Esso minor bantam 'AAA' rep hockey team had a short run in the Ontario Minor flockey Association playoffs, losing a series to the Oshawa Legionaires last week 2-0. But, the Raiders now go on to the Eastern Ontario 'AAA' playoffs where they will face the York-Simcoe Express in the first round. The Raiders dropped a 3-1 decision to Oshawa at home in game one. The Raiders got a third -period goal from Mike Sauter for their lone marker of the contest. In game two in Oshawa, the Raiders kept it close, but came out on the wrong end of a 5-4 contest to drop the series. Garrett Winder, Sean Docherty, Sean Silliphant and Oliver Lopez scored for Ajax -Pickering. The Julie's Esso minor bantams finished regular -season play with a 2-2 tie with the Central Ontario Wolves. Sean Docherty and Jeff Miles scored for the Raiders. Goal - tender Paul Guthrie registered a fine effort to earn the tie as Ajax -Pickering was out - shot 32-18 in the contest. The Ajax -Pickering minor bantams closed out the season with a league record of 11- 13-3. Of Pickering, and Rachel Goddard, 15, of Scarbor- ough — all members of the Winstonette Gymnas- tic Association in Markham — came back with medals from the Gemini Cup meet in Oldsmar, Fla. earlier this month. The three members of the 10 -person Ontario Tour Team were among more than 130 gymnasts from across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. On the first day of competition, Liphardt fin- ished first overall with a fast on floor, second on bars, fourth on vault and seventh on beam. In the event final of the floor exercises, she captured the gold medal in the senior 3 division.
