Bludgeoned man leaps off Pickering apartment balcony
PICK[ -RING — A man From Amityville.
New York broke both heels when he jumped
from a second -floor apartment balcorn here
after he was assaulted Wednesday.
Around 11:40 a.m. the 2121 -year-old man was
beaten when three people entered an apartment
at 1467 Whites Rd. where he was staying with a
friend. Durham Regional Police Sergeant Bill
Watson reports. The three were acquaintances
of the apartment's tenant.
The victim was hit on the head with a blunt
instrument, possibly a semi-automatic handgun,
before breaking loose, running out to the sec-
ond -floor balcony and jumping to the ground.
Bleeding heavily and in his bare feet, he ran to a
phone booth on Kingston Road to call police.
Officers took the man to Ajax -Pickering
General Hospital, where he was treated for the
fractures and a lump on the back of his head.
Police have a warrant for the arrest of one
man, of no fixed address, on charges that
include possession of a dangerous weapon,
assault with a weapon, assault and threatening
bodily harm.

Eves vows tax cut

Mr. Eves answered public, opposition
and media criticisms of the govern-
ment's 'omnibus' Bill 26 by explaining
its provisions were designed to help
municipalities, hospitals and the
Province's other "transfer partners- cope
with provincial cutbacks and difficult
economic times. He said he held exten-
sive consultations with all those partner
before bringing in the bill.
-They asked for the tools to help
thein become more cost-efficient, and
that is what Bill 26 was about. -
The treasurer maintained the govem-
ment has no apologies to mike ti,r pass-
ing such it far-reaching hill with such a
broad range of ramifications for so
many citircns.
"Every one of us has to be part of the
solution, that's the point."
Mr. Evcs defended the cutbacks he
has made by noting the message Ontari-
ans have hien giving him is that they
want "leaner" and more "customer -ori-
ented" government services.
"We can no longer simply get away
with trimming the fat around the edges."
The treasurer vowed the Harris gov-
ernment will live up to its commitment
to "reinvest" into the health care system
every dollar saved through health-care
cuts. He noted new spending has already
been announced on satellite dialysis cen-
tres across the province, the restoration
of* full OHIP-rate payment fur out -of -
province medical care, paramedic train-
ing, cardiac surgery and the extension of
drug plan coverage to low-income
Ontanans.

will live up to its promise of income tax
cuts fur Ontarians. He noted the tax hur-

iest in any jurisdiction in North Ameri-

certainly know how to have tun.
Throughout a fund-raising reception for Durham
West MPP Janet Ecker Tuesday night at Gallantry's
restaurant in Pickering, the Tories indulged in their
fair share of joking and poking fun at each other.
But the piece de resistance, so to speak, was saved I
for the end. This prank, noted one organizer, would
prove once and for all that Conservatives have a sense
of humor.
It was an auction of a can of tuna autographed by
one of the evening's guests, Community and Social
Services Minister Dave Tsubouchi, for whom Ms.
Ecker works as parliamentary assistant.
Repeatedly referred to as Captain Highliner at
Tuesday's function, Mr. Tsubouchi was the target of
much criticism last fall for suggesting welfare recipi-
ents could save on their grocery bills by haggling with
their grocer over the price of tuna.
After much laughter and several rounds of lively
bidding, the can of fish was purchased for $200.

In your arrogance, you have decided you know
what is best for the residents of Ward 2 by appointing

ignored the fad that the voting residents of Ward 2
have said an emphatic `No' to Mr. Dickerson. Not
mace, but three times! Democracy indeed!

save on lobbying, legal fees

DURHAM -- The public
school board has renewed
membership in the Ontario
Public School Boards Associ-
ation (OPSBA) for another
year at a cost of 577,280 as
trustees deem it money well
spent.
Durham Board of Education
trustees made the decision
Monday, saving the cost of
not continuing membership
could run into millions of dol-
lars. The board estimates it's
saved S27.4 million to date
through OPS B A membership.
"I believe that this is a
great savings to the taxpayers
of Durham.- Oshawa trustee
Mike Nicholson told the
hoard's standing committee
the previous week.

ing evidence there's a need for
a collective voice of the pub-
lic school hoard." Oshawa
trustee Ken Ridge said Mon-
day.

Tournament recently.
Pickering met Emily-Omemee in
the championship final and, in the
last two minutes, Alexandra Edwards
and Kathryn Pidhirny scored to break
a 3-3 tie to give Pickering a 5-3 vic-

team captured the championship at
the 18th annual Pickering Ringette
Tournament recently.
Pickering met Emily-Omemee in
the championship final and, in the
last two minutes, Alexandra Edwards
and Kathryn Pidhirny scored to break
a 3-3 tie to give Pickering a 5-3 vic-
tory.
The Pickering squad played four
games to advance to the final, defeat-
ing Ajax 104, Whitby 8-6, Emily-
Omemee 54 and Ajax 6-3.
