A.Iax THE NEWS ADVERTISER FRIDAY, JANUARY 19,1996 -PAGE 3 Axe JK:News Advertiser readers DURHAM — The Durham Board of Education is right to cut junior ldndergarten. That's the opinion of the majority of callers who responded to the News Advertiser's InfoSource survey asking how you feel about the public school board's recommendation to dis- mantle junior kindergarten begin- ning in September. The recommendation follows recent cuts by the provincial government, which has once again made junior kindergarten an opticxual program. It has also cut funding for the program in half, which means local taxpayers would have to pick up the S1.5 -million annual price tag if the board continued offering iL Final debate on the issue is set to take place Motlday. Here's a sampling of your opinions: Most callers to our InfoSource line support cuttin .unior kindergarten eminent which suggests junior kinder- garten be cut or optional is one decision I agree with. There are a lot of facilities for would-be junior kindergartners — es, play schemes and gym clubs. If JK is for socializing and finding out about the world they live in, we already have the infrastruc- ture in place. There is no need to make costly renovations to schools. The 50 teaching positions lost will be balanced against those educators who lost their jobs at nursery schools when JK started. These people will most proh- ably work again. I think kindergarten should he upgraded so children can learn to read and write. In the future there will be no Grade 13, so I think school boards 4mld concentrate on the children in schools so the children can gain the credits they deed... Sharon Ellies: "My vote says dismantle junior kindergarten. Quotes like the value of junior kindergarten for kids with social needs disturb me immensely. If the argument is that it is in place for the abused or neglected, then this is d6mite- ly a social services issue. Therc is little room for debate in the face of recent provincial funding cutbacks If the Durham Board of Education continues offer- ing junior kindergarten to about 2.000 youngsters, it must do so at a cost of $ 1 .5 million a %car to taxpay- ers. And unless it adds S-1 million for renovations, the program still wouldn't he offered at all schools in Durham. "Wc helie\c in the (educational) value of junior kindcr,,arten, but not at the expense of other children currently in the system." notes board chairman AudreN 'MacLean. Indeed. the hoard's decision can't rest on whether trustees believe the program has any educational and/or social value. While it could xer,. well top an\ wish list. in the end it comes down to affordability and the fact that other students would he hurt in the Ione run. The hoard must he applauded for making a tough recommendation, but it's regrettable that debate was rushed through with little warning to the public or trustees. Though the board won't makc its final decision until 'Monday. the meat of the debate has already taken place, leaving Oshawa trustee Mike Nicholson "ashamed and disgusted" to sit on the board. One thing is certain: The current fiscal climate places severe limits on this hoard, and others across the prosincc. Some may want the program. but none of us can reasonably afford it. It was wonder- ful to see a focus on good news in our community, i.e. the response to the Salvation Army's appeal to help the needy this past Christmas season. We thought you would be inter- ested to know that our school com- munity, in partnership with local businesses, assisted eight needy local families. It is our pleasure to tell you that our school community (students, parents and staff) man- aged to collect more than 80 boxes of non-perishable food and grocery items as well as gifts for our "adopt- ed" families. Donations from our Staff and Parent-Teacher Organizations were used to buy perishable food items such as milk, eggs, etc. and gift cer- tificates which hopefully made Christmas day very special. These generous local businesses: Wal Mart, White Rose Crafts and Nursery (15 Westney Rd. N.), Vandermeer Nursery Ltd., B.C. Pickering Produce, Chris's Design and Interiors, Winner's Apparel Ltd., the SuperCentre (Pickering), LOEB Ajax Baywood, LOEB Ajax Marketplace, and Assing and Assing Enterprises, donated other items, from turkeys to Christmas trees. Our "Christmas Families" project was a tremendous success because of the spirit of cooperation and gen- erosity that exists in the Ajax - Pickering community. All of us in our St. Patrick Catholic School family learned a great deal about the true meaning of Christmas because so many worked together in caring about our neigh- bors. We would like to publicly thank all who contributed to this effort and have received very sincere letters from several of our "adopted" families who were profoundly touched by all those who so willing- ly cared. Please keep up writing about the goodness of the Ajax -Pickering community. It will serve as encour- agement for all of us to continue to care. P. Daniel is on a special low -bacteria diet that forbids fresh fruit, vegcta- bles and take-out fouls. But for every Daniel. there are lots of other kids for whom no life-saving donor can he found. "We met them every day at Sick Kids (the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto)," says Daniel's father, Dave Burton. Even though Daniel has had his transplant, Mr. Bur- ton wants to make sure everyone doesn't forget those other kids, and urges us all to have ourselves tested and our names placed on a bone marrow registry. All it takes is a phone call to the Toronto Red Cross Bone Marrow Registry Unit at 416-593-2257. The Red Cross will provide the dates on which registry informa- tion sessions will be held in this area (usually in Oshawa or Scarborough), and/or will provide information on how you can join the registry. All that's required to join is for you to give a blood sample, which can be tested to determine your bone marrow type. Marrow is only taken if you actually become a donor. Between the time the Burton family started their cam- paign in January 1995 urging people to register and a match was found for Daniel in July, 17,000 people added their names to the Canadian registry, bringing the total to 107,000, according to Mr. Burton. The campaign reached into the U.S. as well, and that's where a donor was eventually found. The Burtons have been told the donor is a female from the U.S. west coast, and that she joined the U.S. registry during their campaign. life. In late July, just after learning Daniel had relapsed again after a six-month remission and was unlikely to survive. the Burtons were told a donor had been found and chemotherapy was start- ed again.
