The mayor says the highlight
of 1995 for him has been the
recent awarding of one of only
four licences in Canada for a

be offered by Clearnet is
expected to revolutionize the

"The potential there is
absolutely phenomenal," says
Mayor Anhurs, noting that not
only is Clearnet expected to
expand and create jobs here, it
is also hoped that related indus-

One cloud on this bright blue
horizon, however, is that Clear -

In with the new without feeling blue
0 Keep New Year's
resolutions `reasonable'
By LINDA WHITE
STAFF REPORTER
DURHAM — As we get set to bid farewell
to 1995, it's the perfect time to adopt a fresh
outlook for the year we're about to usher
in ... as long as our expectations are reasonable.
That advice comes from Distress Centre of
Durham Region's executive director Nan
Einarson. who believes the new year "allows
us to put closure on things. We can tell our-
selves. 'We've lived this year. It was awful.
Let's see what we can do to make the next
year better...'
For some, that begins by dealing with "the
post- hnstmas crash. People have been over-
loading themselves with extra pressures and
running around. Tbey've been trying to fit
everything into an already busy life.
"Getting back into reality is really difficult
fox many people." notes Ms. Einarson who
recommends such stress -management alctivi-
ties as making a list of things which cause
stress in your life. "Ask yourself how you can
deal with them one at a time and what vow can
do to help yourself deal with them."
For those who have experienced disap-
pointment over the holidays — hang unable
to spread time with fam lies, no( being able to
give the gifts you wanted or suffering d nxrgh
an unhappy get-together — try not to relive it
"Rehashing and reviewing those disap-
pointments just creates too much resentment,"
she believes. -Don't attach too much signifr-
ca we to other people's actions. They're under
pressure too. Be forgiving and save yourself
the agony of reliving something and then feel-
ing guilty about feeling that %ay. -
And as you look back on the past year and
Like stack of those things which caused pain.
such as the k>,ss of a job, home or loved one
(through death. separation or divorce), don't
forget to kook at the positive.
"Looking back tends to really pitch people
into depression," explains Ms. Einarson.
"People are really hard on themselves and
focus only on the negative. But don't forget to
look at the other side of the page to see what's
been positive.
"'Istat may be hard to do if you've lost your
job and house, but pick out some of your
strengths. Remember, those losses may have
been through external factors which you had
no control over. You may not be responsible,
yet you're piling guilt on yourself.
"Look at your coping skills. Yes, some-
thing horrific happened, but you've come
through it and endo up with some sense of

Durham Regional Police and Ontario
Provincial Police operate R.I.D.E. programs
and are cautioning motorists about being
responsible as we enter 19%.
"We're issuing a general warning for
people to be careful." says Durham police
Staff Sergeant Sandy Ryric.
Although recent statistics aren't available
from the force, early numbers indicate a
downward trend in the number of drinking
dn%-LT% this holiday sc;aA)n.
"We've had a quiet Christmas for
R.i.D.E. and crime and we'd like that to
continue over and into the new year," says
Staff Sgt Ryrie.
The Whitby OPP have checked about
5.000 drivers, issuing 20 12 -hour suspen-
sions and charging three people with
imprainxi driving.
Cabbies urge party -goers to `be patient'
AJAX-PiCKERING — Party -goers are
advised to add patience to their list of
New Year's resolutions if they're plan-
ning on taking a taxi home after ringing in
1996.
That advice courses frorn both those taxi
companies advising people to book in
advance and [brie which are prepared for
last-minute calls.
"The main thing is to be patient." warns
Jen' Klimpel of People's Taxi, who sug-
gests people call about half an hour before
they need a ride.
Durham Rapid Taxi also recommends
calling shortly before you're about to
leave your party place. "Lots of people do
txxok in advance, but there's no guarantee
a driver will be there on time even if they
do that." notes Brad Barren.
But other companies give priority to
advance bookings.
"People can start booking any time."
says Pat Spencer of Antique Taxi. "They
may still have a bit of a wait, but not as
long as those who just call when they meed
us. We will cover advance bookings first.
We always do. -
Pick -No -Go Taxi agrees. "It's very
hard to be on time on New Year's Eve,
but it's better to book in advance," says
Philip Caruso. "Still, we can't promise
we'll be on time, so please be patient"
normalcy. That really says something about
yourself."
Ms. Einarxon also encourages people who
overspent, drank or ate too much over the hol-
idays not to get ought up in remorse. "Many
people have regrets after the holidays. They
feel they failed because they weren't able to
control thermelyes", but should instead con-
centrate on making positive changes.
For friends and relatives of people who
abuse alcohol or drugs, "we try to make them
realize they can't make people stop doing
something. They must try to help themselves
deal with tlicir own feelings instead of blam-
ing themselves. They don't recognize they're
being victimized. -
Instead of letting that happen. Ms. Einarson
suggests they list coping measures and options
available to help them deal with their situa-
tion.
For those set on making New Year's reso-
lutions. Ms. Einarson reminds there's a danger
in setting "unreasonable expectations...Make
them small and do-abk;. They don't have to he
huge, giant steps. They can be tiny steps
which allow you to sox, success."
She also encourages people to be better
friends to themselves. "We really can't be
gaud to one another unless we can be- g(xxd to
ourselves," maintains Ms. Einarson. "Some-
times, it's easier to be nice to other people and
to give compliments. For so rm of us, it's hard
to accept co mplirnents "
Finally. people who'll be alone New Year's
Eve should "remember this is just another
day. just like Chrisurim. Get through the peri-
od as bast you can and get on with the rest of
the year. Don't put too much emphasis on it."

Open for
business?
If Ontario's Progressive Conscrvatiyc govern -
men( has proven anything since its June election,
it's that legislation and drastic change can he intple-
mcnted at record speeds.
' lVh\ then, in the face of a clear and cogent call
for chanLc from retailers, consumers and suppliers.
is the pro\ incial government in no herr\ to consider
reforinim, policy on Boxing Diu, shopping:'
The prevailing ar,•ument from all sides in favor
of repealing Boxing Da\ restrictions is that it is out-
dated and inappropriate But quite clearl\, there is a
demand for retailer, to open. It's also clear there is
a potential benefit for merchants through increased
sales (and taxes) on one side, and increased spend-
ing on the other.
It the provincial Tories were to consider simpl\
loosening Boring, Da% restrictions. they would pro-
vide Ontarians with a choice to obser\e the holiday
as the\ sec fit. As for retailers, it would he relative-
ly eas\ to create and enforce provision that would
allow them to open while providing necessar\ pro-
tection and compensation for workers.
The Conseryatiyes have shown in the last six
months they are a government that embraces change
with a view to a stronger, more prosperous Ontario.
The Boxing Day issue pro\ides the opportunity
for another gesture that shows, as Premier Mikc
Harris likes to say. Ontario is open for business.

Majority wanted an election
To the editor:
7-hc opinion in your editorial page
of Dcc 17. 1995 under the headin,
'Good for us' surprised me.
The author wrote "democracy has
tx•cn screed" and "there was a trickle
of protest in Ajax over the appoint-
ment of Stcxe Parish as mayor to
replace Jim \Vltty.
I would remind the writer that the
"trickle of protest" I by the people) at
the council meeting was almost two to
one in lavor of" an election and
democrac% by definition is govern-
ment by the people.
You had the opinion that appt)int-
ment versus election is "_•txxl for us"
and perhaps this is the "common
sense" thins to do at this time.
Perhaps you also agree we can
save A1ax an additional $20.W0 to

To the editor:
As a Ion -lime teacher at Pickering High
School, 1 am appalled at the recent harraLe
of racist accusations le\elled against this
outstanding school by some members of
our community, and often over -dramatized
-dr,
by media.
Pickering High School is not perfect.
However. judging by the number of sue-
cesscs and distinctive awards in all areas of
academic, extra -curricular, and commum-
ty-based endeavors by a diverse student
population, we must be doing something
right. (Unfortunately these successes are
seldom perceived as newsworthy).
We no doubt have a few irresponsible
Pickering nuclear station
news is imports
To the editor:
I was unable to attend the open house
held at the Information Center of the
Pickering Nuclear Generating Station
(PNGS), on Nov. 29. dealing with the acci-
dent of Dec. 10, 1994 and the proposed
restarting of the unit two reactor where the
mishap occurred.
I expected to see a report about the open
house in either the following Friday or
Sunday issues cif the Ajax edition of the
News Advertiser but it did not appear.
Shortly thereafter I visited the nuclear
station's Inl'ornialion Center to find out
int to Ajax too
whether they had a handout for the open
house.
Brian Thompson said no, but gave me a
copy of an article which had appeared in
the News Advertiser. I subsequently estab-
lished that this article appeared only in the
Pickering edition.
Events at the PNGS affect Ajax just as
much as they impact on Pickering. I would
appreciate it if, in the Future, you do not
(cave Ajax out in the cold.
teenagers whose level of tolerance and
respect can sometimes he upset during an
argument.
Such students are the exception rather
than the norm, and are most definitely not
exclusive to Pickering High School. They
come from various cultural and ethnic
backgrounds.
To portray Pickering High School as
racist is simplistic, irresponsible and divi-
sive and can only lead to further discord
within the school population.
It most certainly does great disservice to
all of us who work and study here. I am
proud of my colleagues' diligence, dedica-
tion and success in providing all our stu-
dents with a positive learning environment.
I am also proud of all our students, who
consistently demonstrate tolerance, respect
and maturity even during these turbulent
witch-hunting days.
To that end, I would like to encourage
all members of our community to do the
same.
After all, it takes the whole village to
raise a child.

Ano(hcr year has passed. and

has taken root on my scalp.
I.ikc many of" you. Int glad to
see 1999 behind me but I'll look to
the year that stretches ahead with
renewed optimisni and hope for
something better fur all of us.
Herewith arc my hopes, hig and
small, for the year 1996 and
beyond.
1 hope Durham Region contin-
ues to aggressively make its case
for its place in this nebulous issue
everyone is calling 'Greater
Toronto Area reform'.
1 hope Quchecers juin the rest of
the countr\ in putting the unity
issue lower on their priority list to
concentrate on more immediate.
tan,_ihle things like job creation
and deficit reduction. i
I hope that, as a consequence of
that. Quebecers learn also that we
do work better together when we're
one great nation, not two lesser
nations.
1 hope that Canadians inside and
outside Quebec recognize we can
be dil*fcrent and equal ur the san)r
rime. 1 hope politicians can demon-
strate this chfcctivel\ on our hehall.
I hope the Coninion Sense
Revolution in Ontario shows some
early henelit (like exceeding deficit
taructs) so we can have real reasons
to continue suppt)rting it.
I hope Social Scr\ices Minister 1
David Tsuhouchi keeps a low pro -
1 -11C.
I hope Durham Regional
Chairman Jim Witty doesn't.
I hope this newspaper doesn't
have to cover one single tragedy in
which alcohol was a factor.
1 hope my son forever keeps his I
red hair and his boundless curiosi-
ty. I hope the latter never puts him
in harm's way. I hope he'll still
look like his mother when he's 21.
I hope you'll join us in cyber-
space. I hope our electronic news-
paper, durhamnews, provides the
hand you hold when you're ready
for take -off.
I hope every single thing con-
tained in the horoscope I read this
week covering the next year of my
life comes true.
I hope the young lady who came
into the office this week with a
heart-warming story about the man
who made her Christmas so special
gets everything she wants out of

I hope all of you -- every single I
one -- has a safe, prosperous, ful-

Arrive alive! Don't drink and drive!
If you've had too much to drink on New Year's Eve, please don't drive.
We want you around next year and the year after that and ... Arrange some other way home.
And, if you see someone else who's had too much, make sure they don't get behind the wheel.
Remember that friends don't let friends drive drunk.

TO
:Michel Saikali
Thrift-- Mechanic Shop
"After several months of having my car
serviced at a local automobile service centre
and not being; satisfied it was refreshing; to
meet a business man with the integrity and
ability that you have shown.
I would recommend your place of
business to anyone needing their car
serviced."
