Daniel's transplant was originally scheduled for Oct. 4, but on Sept. 29, when the student of Ecole Catholique Notre- Dame -de- la -Jeune sse in Ajax was already in Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children for preparatory treat- ment, the doctors discovered the can- cer was back. They advised against further treatment but Daniel wasn't ready to give up and asked to receive Teen's sex assault report false, police rule PICKERING — Police don't believe claims of a 17 -year-old who said she was sexually assaulted while walking near Dellbrook Plaza here earlier this month. The girl told Durham Regional Police she was approached by four men on Nov. 16 around 6:05 pan. and dragged to the rear of the plaza, located on Brock Road north of Finch Avenue. She told police the men grabbed at her schoolbag and demanded money, which she didn't have. She Claimed the men then sexually assaulted her before she broke free and ran to safety. Police made the announce- ment "to put the public's mind at rest." according to Stasi Sergeant Sandy Ryrie. "We have had several sexual assaults in that area, but there were no sexual assaults in this incident" IkWs "have spoken m" the gid iovdve& the difficult course of chemotherapy that was his only chance for going into remission again. Chemotherapy was commenced immediately and on Oct. 31 new tests revealed he was in remission again. But the family had to wait for the transplant because a time had to be found when the bone marrow donor (whose identity has not been revealed) could enter hospital for the donation procedure and because the total body radiation unit at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto was closed down in order to be moved. Daniel needs to undergo total body radiation to destroy his own marrow before the transplant. Daniel was tested again last Friday and his cancer is still in "full remis- sion", according to his father, Dave Burton. Ile entered hospital Monday shxlim stuff Plus Much more.... Daniel Burton in hospital for life-saving operation for preparatory treatment for the Fri- day transplant. If all goes well, Daniel will have to stay in hospital four to six weeks. At least four weeks of that will be in iso- lation where his only visitors will be his parents, who will only be able to visit him one at a time after undergo- ing sterilization procedures. The transplant will improve Daniel's chance of surviving his can- cer from nil to 40 per cent, according to doctors. Daniel and his family have had a difficult year since his leukemia first returned last January, after a three- year remission. Near the end of April, by which time no suitable bone mar- row donor had been found in the existing files of bone marrow reg- istries, Daniel's parents issued a pub- lic plea asking people to have them- selves tested to see if their marrow could save his life. In late July, just after learning Daniel had relapsed again after a six- month remission and was unlikely to survive, the Burtons were told a donor had been found and chemotherapy was started again. The Ontario Federation of Labor wants a blanket work stoppage to take place in London on Dec. 11. Wh%? It seems organized labor in Ontario is upset with the tough direction taken by the Mike Harris govern- ment. Perhaps labor needs to be reminded that it was the voters of Ontario — including some union members — who backed the Tories and their Common Sense Revolution. But ever since Premier Harris came into power, labor has been running around as if it were a schoolyard bully picking fights with anyone who dares stand in its way. If labor groups are looking for public sympathy, they w•on*t get it w ith these tactics. What will labor groups do if some employees who walk oft the job Dec. 11 are justifiably terminated? XVhat possible purpose would this protest then have sen ed? Unionists should ingest their energy in arriving at workable solutions for this debt -ridden province. These promises of labor disruption and threatening business is the same thing as biting the hand that feeds. Nk'ithdraw ing labor will do nothing to further their cause. Indeed, labor should prepare themselves for a strong backlash from ordinary, overburdened taxpayers who are sick and tired of listening to whining special-inter- est groups and bitter unionists. `if we g ust can et a cut, VVV 1 C thewater: We 't take a cut.' Wednesday Letters: Perhaps PCs should analyze themselves To the editor: In response to Mr. Shedden's wild allegations, which were full of sound and fury and signify nothing, 1 will simply offer to him the same proposal or "recipe" that Preston Manning offered to the federal gov- ernment. The Reform Party has a 20 -point solution for a new Confederation. "The starting point is founding prin- ciples and the most important of these is the equality of all citizens and provinces within the Confederation. The founding princi- ples of the new federalism include other principles such as the princi- ples of limited government and Its - cal responsibility. New federalists want a more democratic approach to political decision-making, in particular con- stitution making — democratic fed- eralism rather than top down execu- tive federalism. And new federalists believe in the principle of a more balanced division of powers between the fed- eral and provincial governments. This is our answer to the demands of Quebecers, and others throughout Canada, for more control over those factors and services which reinforce the strengths and uniqueness of particular communi ties and regions." Anvone interested in receiving copy of our 20 -point solution should contact the Reform Party ridint association at 686-0278. In closing, I would like to adc that rather than throwing slurs at the Reform Party, Mr. Sheddcn's time might better be spent analyzing why his beloved leader, lean Charest. could not even convince his owr constituents to remain in Canada Surprisingly or not, they voted yep to a separate Quebec. Marnee Stern. Pickering Grade 13 serves an important academicpurpose To the editor - In your Nov. 10 edition, you posed the question: "Do you agree with the provincial government's plan to scrap Grade 13?" As an OAC student I was very disconcerted to hear that my final year of high school is viewed by some people as being a "waste". One even had the impertinence to pro- nounce Grade 13 a "waste of time and money". Upon reading this, 1 felt obligated to enlighten all who share those views of just how fundamental the OAC year really is. The fifth year of high school is a crucial stepping stone for young people planning to attend university. It allows students to experience a cer- tain independence that we have never been allowed in previous years, due to over - accommodating teachers. Durham is fine, thank you To the editor - Contact your mayor, council member and MPP to protest this GTA scam. 1 say scam because if this happens and we become part of a mega -city, Durham residents will be the losers. Taxes will increase, utili- ties will increase, as will things we haven't thought of. We shall be subsidizing a place many "Durhamites" rarely see. It will become a case of having to fight for every consideration for our own Durham Region. Everyone knows we are imperfect now, but we live in a great and well-maintained area with good leaders and want to continue as such. Durham Region is well and thriving, thank you very much Toronto. K.M. Slater, Ajax Also, it provides us with an additional year to mature both emotionally and intel- lectually. It is with this new- found sophistication that the opportunity to explore the infinite options of career choices is much more appre- ciated and advantageous. So, before we are thrust into an entirely different realm of instruction, Grade 13 provides an insight as to what a university -level edu- cation is really like. Without this taste of reality, young graduates would find them- selves submerged in an over- whelming workload, unable to survive. In order to ensure quality education for future generations, and not to pul their minds to "waste", it i essential that we allow stu- dents the option of participat- ing in Grade 13. The unemployed 50 -year-old Pickering resident had eight job offers over the phone on the week- end and another five on Monday after a story profiling his attempts at finding employment appeared in the News Advertiser on Sunday. Among the responses he's had are calls from Bell Canada, a Toronto-based company that sells mutual funds and a Markham secu- rity firm. "I believe one (of the calls) will turn into a job." says Mr. Currie, who admits to being surprised at the response. Aside from the occasional short- term job, he hasn't had full-time employment since 1992 when the Markham printing company where he worked for 21 years closed. Since then, he's taken a series of retraining courses, learning comput- er and business skills. Mr. Currie also took continuing education courses to get his high school diplo- ma. In an effort to find a job. Mr. Currie posted self-made signs across Durham. He's in the process of lining up interviews with companies that have called. mow_ ursdaIs )ourDay.J rl ave 20 t leisfir. iall, X1urrnkv :-,L). is I, ilstont. r : Va.iall In /a71/ at .k lappins. 1)efer iK►ur payment until , lay 1996 un J Purtiw:.*s ,,( ,X k) alr MMM. k4k'n u,,u nsw rur:ur and buy b4,n• Dwember 25, W5 dP "49 r Hlif JFT tit /vcc Pk KI RIN(, 1O)('\ l F\ I Kt ea e s G►a ez►s a. _ As Liq -spy• SvN• vas• Fay• "Our New Homt -Grandpa's best hat' Signed by Johnny Bower dt Frank Mahovilich LANCOME PARI, [;III1;.luu Rcaunful (,111 (lflcrings for ( hrwnla% ( 11"o,c h -um 1-ranrantc or ',km ( art• (,ill tick. i) (Ic I.atH'(itnc blJui;, uith,!,r,hn,"oll'l"'I'lkllih,'1ltdrItn1,01M I hi. \,•f (,main, ; • ( l It' l,l.,nn, 11114 d,' 1,111(•(11'. \f,ltn ,1 1111 kms:' • 1) drr It' 1,,11411111 1 1,111 hldmflllg R,th ( 1,111(. The Durham CAS has run its Community Car- ing at Christmas Program for about 15 years. Families, businesses, groups and individuals help ease the financial strain Christmas causes a family or teenag- er. Last year, 126 families and teens received aid. CAS social workers go through their cases, identifying families or teens for whom Christ- mas is going to be financially diffi- cult_ The families or teens are matched with a donor, who shops for a gift and food hamper. Delivery of the hampers begins the week of Dec. 18. S o c i e t y spokesman Bren- da McConnell says hampers average $200. Donors receive basic information, such as the size and composition of a family, and then go shopping. "We have a number of fami- lies and teens, par- ticularly articularly teens, who have na yet been matched. Workers are still identifying fami- lies," Durham CAS executive director James Dubray says - The CAS would h1w to bear from potential donors before Doc. 18. W u ♦ EDUCATION Public school trustees flipmflop 0 and ciecicleagainst retireegifts By LINDA WHITE STAFF REPORTER DURHAM — Public school board employees won't receive a gift when they retire after trustees did a flip-flop Monday. Though Durham Board of Educa- tion trustees approved reinstating the tradition of giving gifts to retiring employees at their last standing com- mittee meeting, they reversed their decision exactly one week later at their regular board meeting. "We don't have the right to start spending money on something that's not central to education," argued Pickering trustee Susan Kular. "I feel our dedicated staff would graciously decline because they know this takes away from the classroom," agreed Oshawa trustee Nancy McLean. But others believe gifts are an important token of appreciation - "Staff have been pulling up their socks to fill in the gaps" because of recent funding cuts, noted Pickering trustee Jill Hamilton. "It's a gracious way to recognize our employees," argued Oshawa trustee Ken Ridge. He maintained spending $2,550 to honor an average of 85 employees who retire each year was a "tiny amount" from the board's budget Until three years ago, the board honored both retiring employees and those with 25 years of service with a dinner and a gift Those employees each received two tickets to a dinner, which cost the board about $20 apiece, as well as a gift — usually brass candlesticks or a brass picture frame — worth about $30. Due to budget concerns, trustees cut those costs in half and began Church craft and bake sale offers Christmas shoppers a chance to get out early PICKERING -- A local church here is hosting a weekend sale for earlybird Christmas sho ffers. Mount Zion United Church holds a Christmas trait and bake sale from 4 b 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. I and 10 a.m. to 4 pmL Saturday and Sunday Dec. 2 and Dec. 3 at Mount Zion 6j Community Cen- tre, 4230 Salem o Rd., two miles north of Hwy. 7. A hot lunch is available and 10 per cent of the proceeds hom the sale will go to the church. Admission to the event is free and the church is wheelchair acces- sible. Call Shirley Jamieson at 649-5102 or 649-5200 for more information on the sale. offering a dinner to retiring staff and a gift to 25 -year employees. At the request of trustees last sum- mer, communications manager Mary Brown surveyed a number of school boards across Canada asking how they honored retiring employees. Twenty-five of 37 boards which responded gave retirees a gift with an average price tag of $121. Just two gave a dinner or reception. Meanwhile, trustees stood behind a decision reached at their last standing committee meeting and agreed to honor volunteers who give up their time for board committees at a special meeting. Until now, the board hasn't formal- ly recognized volunteers who sit on committees with system -wide man- dates, such as employment equity. School volunteers won't be recog- nized at that meeting because most schools holds teas to thank them. When you've made up your mind to paint a room, there's often the e temptation to just go at it and get it over with as quickly as possible. The problem with that approach is that it's likely to cost you far more in time and effort than if you'd prepared things properly, taken care while you were painting and cleaned up carefully as you went along. What, after all, it takes long -- cleaning up paint you've just spilled on the plastic under the paint can? Or cleaning up paint you spilled on the plastic under the paint can -- after you've walked it across the dining room rug and onto the hardwood floor in the hallway? A little research into paint properties will also pay off. Pick a high gloss for kitchens and bathrooms, for example, because it has the best resistance to moisture and wear, while an almost odorless latex is quick -drying and offers easy clean-ups because it's water- based. And although a cheap primer will do a good job of sealing raw or porous surfaces and give subsequent coats a good surface to grip, a cheap paint won't seem like such a bargain when you're on your fourth coat and it's still looking patchy and streaky. Proper preparation definitely saves you time in the long run. Look for peeling or flaking paint and take it off with a putty knife, and clean out loose plaster, then fill cracks and holes with spackle. Lightly sand the spots you've fixed, then use a tack cloth to get rid of grit and dust. Take a dust mop to walls and ceilings to get rid of cobwebs and dust that can mess up the paint, and mask areas where flat paint and semi -gloss will meet. If you can move fixtures and furniture• do it, and cover everything that's left with sheets of plastic -- or tape newspaper to the edge of floors or the bottom of baseboards. You can never be too careful. Also be sure to keep pets well out of the way. If you're using a roller (in the right spots, a roller covers three times faster than a brush) cover the tray in aluminum foil that can be thrown away at the end of the day or use a disposable paint tray liner. Take a systematic, top -to -bottom approach to painting, and take it slowly. Clean up spills as soon as they happen. Begin with two -or -thrix -inch brush strokes around the edges of the ceilings, then up the corners where the walls meet, and around door and window frames. Roll the ceiling, then the walls, using a four -foot square "M" stroke (roll up first to lessen the chance of drips), then fill in the gaps by spreading the paint and move on to the next "M". Feather the paint where LAKE VIM $124,500 specious condo townhwm. Paint brush strips above the baseboard, then move on to painting the baseboards, window and door frame.Finish the doors by painting panels first, and do horizontal door sections before vertical ones. Use angular sash brush to paint window frames next to glass, and leave a fine line of paint on the glass to form an airtight seal. You can clean up the edges by scoring the paint with a utility knife against a straightedge tool, then lift the uneven paint with a window scraper. Remember to keep a room well - ventilated if you're using oil-based or alkyd paints, to avoid a build-up of toxic fumes -- and be aware of the hazards of fire. When it comes time to clean-up, wipe any drips off the rim and sides of paint cans, and label the container clearly so you'll know where and .when you used the paint. Remove excess paint from brushes and rollers by wiping them on newspapers, then wash off water-soluble paints in hot, soapy water. Brushes store well wrapped in brown paper bags hung from string which runs through the holes in the handles, while rollers should be wrapped in airtight plastic bags and set on end to avoid damaging the nap. If paint has to be cleaned with solvent, dip brushes or roller sleeves repeatedly in a can of solvent and take off the dissolved paint with newspaper or paper towels. Once clean, give them a final wash in hot, soapy water and store them carefully away. Do not do this close to heat sources. After a hassle -free painting session, you could actually look forward to the next one. This article is provided by local Realtors and the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) for the benefit of consumers in the real estate market. Anyone who's ever bought or sold a house will tell you there's an amazing amount of paperwork involved. And once you've put your signature on any of the many documents you'll be presented with, you're legally bound to honor whatever obligations and conditions that particular contract contains. So who needs a lawyer in a real estate transaction? The better question might be: Who can afford NOT to have one? With a good lawyer on your side, you'll be ale to make sense of the legal lingo that turns up on every page. You'll be able to take care of every time-consuming step or complicated issue involved in completing the deal, as well as someone to look after your particular rights and interests. How do you find a lawyer? If you're buying your first home, probably the best way is to ask around -- try friends, family and business acquaintances -- for recommendations. Question prospective lawyers about their experience with real estate transactions, and also discuss their fee scale, and the services they'll provide for the money they charge. Could there be other legal fees, and if unexpected costs arise, at what point can you expect to hear about them? When do you start working with a lawyer? It's a good idea to hire a lawyer before you .submit an official Agreement of Purchase and Sale to a seller. When do you start working with a lawyer? It's a good idea to hire a lawyer before you submit an official Agreement of Purchase and Sale to a seller. This lets the lawyer look over such things as the legal description of the property you intend to buy and any conditions, such as a property inspection, which you want satisfied before your offer becomes final. Your lawyer can also ensure there's enough time for him or her to examine the "title", or legal evidence of ownership, to make sure it's free of restrictions. If you're unable to have a lawyer look at your offer to purchase immediately, you can insert a condition that gives you another day or two to get that offer satisfactorily reviewed by a lawyer. If you're buying a home, a lawyer will: • check to see if there are any claims registered against the property, and that these are cleared away before you become the home's new owner; • investigate whether taxes are owing on the property; • ensure a final inspection has been completed on a new home; • make sure the property is properly described on every document you sign, and that you will have valid proof of ownership; • tell you how much Land Transfer Tax -- the payment to the provincial government for transferring property from the seller to the buyer -- you'll have to pay when the transaction is completed, and how much money (if any) you owe for utility bills, fuel or taxes prepaid by the seller; • draw up mortgage documents, if your lender has not done so. If you're selling a house, a lawyer will: • gather all necessary documents to complete the transaction and transfer the title to the new owner; • let the buyer's lawyer know that your mortgage, if there is one, will be paid off -- or discharged -- with proceeds from the sale, and obtain a statement of the outstanding loan balance at the closing date from your lender; • draw up a statement of adjustments that itemizes proceeds from the sale and shows how they'll pay off all the costs involved in that sale. He or she will also distribute the money to pay off these costs, and discharge your mortgage from the property title. Any money left over is money you've made from the sale and your lawyer will write you a cheque for the net amount; • meet the buyer's lawyer at the land registry office on closing day to file all the paperwork necessary to transfer the property title. You can see why it's so important to have a lawyer on your team when buying or selling a home. Take Time to'Invest I*n Sturdy Tools This article is provided by local Realtors and the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) for the benefit of consumers in the real estate market. Whether you've got big plans for a renovation project, or more modest ideas about fixing up that first home away from home, you'll find doing it yourself a whole lot easier with the proper tools. It's worth remembering that "bargain" tools are rarely that. Poorly made equipment fashioned out of cheap materials can be extremely dangerous -- even lethal. And buying cheaper tools is a false economy; they'll need to be replaced when their shoddy workmanship becomes obvious. The following information outlines the basic equipment you'll need to get started on jobs big and small around the house. Tool Box::There's no point in having fancy equipment if you're never quite sure where to find it. A good tool box will have plenty of room for the basic necessities, and include storage space for the likes of nails, screws and drill bits. It will keep your tools rust -free, and has the advantage of being portable. A small space in a garage or basement could also house a sheet of perforated hardboard with hangers for keeping tools in their place. Screwdrivers: A good screwdriver has a strong, tempered steel blade and a fluted handle that's smooth and comfortable to grip. One screwdriver won't handle the variety of screws you'll work with on projects, but the most common has a flat tip at the end of a wedged blade. It can handle many screws, but you'll often need smaller and larger versions of this variety to avoid a too -big blade scraping away at the surface of a small screw or a too -small blade slipping dangerously in the slot of a larger one. Cross -slotted screws, which are generally used for jobs requiring a stronger finish (such as fastening shelves or cabinets to a wall) need a crisscross screwdriver with an X-shaped blade. Hammers: A 16 ounce curved claw hammer (the curved claw lets you pull out old nails) is the best bet for work around the home. Quality is important. Look for one that's forged from a solid piece of steel, with a handle grip in rubber, leather or plastic -- or one with a metal head that's solidly wedged and glued into a wooden handle. For safety's sake, a hammer with a damaged handle should be discarded rather than repaired. Even a slight crack can lead to a painful pinch, and more serious handle damage could cause catastrophic injuries should the steel head fly Off. Pliers: A pair of slip joint pliers can grasp small objects tightly between the outer, parallel, finely -grooved jaws, or larger objects between inner, concave, rugged teeth. The name "slip - joint" comes from the fact that the tool's centre fastener can move between these two grooves. Pliers can grasp, bend, turn and pull objects. They're often used to loosen and tighten bolts, which is not what they're designed for, but they do the job well if there's not wrench around. A good pair of pliers will appear polished, or have a bluish black sheen and the handle will be scored for a firm grip. The centre -pin will be fastened so you can't remove it. Wrench: This will do a proper job of tightening and loosening nuts and bolts. Although wrenches come in a huge variety of sizes and styles, an adjustable wrench -- with a knob on the head that moves one jaw towards or away from the other fixed jaw -- works well for many jobs around the home. Hand Saw: The point -size of a saw tells you how many teeth there are per inch; the more teeth, the finer the cutting -- and the slower. A crosscut saw has teeth beveled slightly in alternating directions for cutting across wood grain so a good saw for many jobs around the home would be a 10 -point crosscut saw with a 24 to 26 inch blade of springy, tempered steel securely fastened to a handle with a comfortable grip. Other handy saws to have around include a hacksaw, with a fine-toothed blade fitted into a U-shaped frame, for cutting metal and some plastics; a coping saw, which has a thinner, finer blade than a hacksaw and can make rounded cuts; and a keyhole saw, which has a thin, fine blade tempered to a fine point, which can be inserted into wallboard or paneling that's already installed for precision -cutting work. It's also possible to buy a nesting saw, which allows a variety of blades to be fitted into one handle. Power Drill: The fastest way to make holes in wood, metal, drywall, brick and plenty of other materials is with an electric drill. You can also buy a host of attachments for sanding, buffing and screwing. An adjustable chuck allows for drill bits in a variety of sizes, and variable speed drills will let you do high-speed work, with wood for example, and slower -speed jobs like drilling through concrete. One safety consideration worth paying extra for is a double -insulated feature, which guards against shock if you're working in wet conditions. Spirit Level: To find out if a surface is perfectly level, you need a spirit level. A bubble inside a precisely aligned vial filled with spirits will rest perfectly in the middle of two lines only if the surface you're examining is on a true horizontal or vertical plane. This too, which comes with a metal or wood frame, is invaluable for many projects, including deck -building, concrete work and cabinet installation. Utility Knife: The handle of a good utility knife will fit comfortable into your palm, while the razor blade cutter should be retractable and easily replaced. The knife can be used for cutting everything from wallboard to wallpaper. _ Measuring Devices: One of the most popular of these is a flexible steel tape measure that retracts into a small metal case, has a hook to hold one end in place, a locking device to keep the tape extended and a push-button to retract it quickly. . The other is a fold -up wooden rule that comes in sections attached by brass plates with clearly - marked measures. The wooden rule generally comes in six-foot lengths, while the steel measuring tape can run up to 24 or 30 feet in length.
