Toronto to close Brock West.
That's what Pickering -Ajax
Citizens Together (PACT) for
the Environment representatives
were told at a special meeting
with Mayor Wayne Arthurs
Thursday night, according to
PACT chairman David Steele.
But he says the mayor did
promise PACT would be shown
any deal on the landfills negoti-
ated with Metro before the
Town signs it.
"It was pretty heated at
times," Mr. Steele says of the
two-hour meeting. "Overall we
came out with some disappoint-
ments."
The Brock North site has
become part of the negotiations
between Pickering and Metro to
settle a lawsuit the Town has
launched against Metro which
is slated to go before the courts
in mid-November. Pickering is
suing Metro in an attempt to
force it to close Brock West and
obtain compensation for the
environmental damage the
dump has allegedly caused.
The Brock North site east of
Brock Road near Fifth Conces-
sion Road has been closed since
only operating for one year in
1973 because of leachate prob-
lems. Metro must still pump
leachate from the site and bans -
port it to the sewage treatment
plant on the lakeshore.

ing early Friday moming. In photo above, one
firefighter suffered a minor injury battling a
blaze at around 12:01 a.m. that destroyed a
vacant house on Sideline 16. Then, at around
1:15 a.m., extensive damage was caused to a

investigating the "suspicious" blazes, but can't

Quebecers need `a better dream'
to stay in union: Preston Manning

AJAX-PICKERING — The rest of Canada must pro-
vide a "competing ideal, to fight Quebec separatism and
that's what's missing from the No side in the current
sovereignty referendum campaign, says Reform Party of
Canada leader Preston Manning.
Mr. Manning told a breakfast meeting of the Ajax -
Pickering Board of Trade at the Regalis Restaurant in
Pickering Friday, "If there's a weakness so far in the No
campaign it's in presenting this positive side. It's my
view that you're fighting a .a. You fight a dream
with a better dream."
The better dream, maintained Mr. Manning, should be
the promise of "fundamental change" for a "new and
better federalism" that will allow Quebec to fulfill more
of its aspirations. He added Canadians should go "over
the head of the prime minister if necessary" to transmit
that message to Quebecers.
Overall, said the Reform leader, there are three basic
messages that need to be communicated to Quebec dur-
ing the final week of the referendum campaign.
- The real question is separation and not sovereignty -
association;
A "yes" vote is a vote for separation "to get out of a
political union, not get into a new one";
- Voting "no" doesn't necessarily mean voting for the
status quo because the rest of Canada is also interested in

PACT won't support Town
in dump talks with Metro

release toxins into the air and ground
as the 130,000 tonnes of waste there
is extracted and transported. The
organization has for several years
been asking for a public hearing
before the trash is transferred any-
where.
The public hearing "is off because
the Town of Pickering doesn't want it
to happen," says Mr. Steele. "They're
saying it's off because it's confiden-
tial litigation."
He says the Town and Metro are
also refusing to show PACT a letter
from Metro which is referred to in a
resolution passed by Town Council
Monday to establish the principles
under which Pickering officials may
continue the negotiations to close
Brock West. Those principles include
a closing date for Brock West, provi-
sions to move Brock North garbage to
Brock West, financial compensation
for the Town, clean-up of the land-
fills, and health and safety measures
to protect Pickering residents.
Mr. Steele says PACT is not will-
ing to support and aid the Town in
those negotiations until Pickering
officials are prepared to release the
letter and PACT "can see what the

PICKERING - Town council has approved a tem-
porary school crossing on Rosebank Road at Charn-
wood Court to serve some of the children attending
Elizabeth Seton Separate School.
The crosswalk is for kids from the north area of the
Fox Hollow subdivision and will only be in place
until sidewalks and other road safety measures are
installed along Rosebank Road.
Because of an agreement between the Town and
property owners, no sidewalks will be constructed
along the east side of Rosebank Road until a tree
preservation program for the area is developed.
The crossing will allow children to avoid walking
on the road.
When a sidewalk is installed, probably sometime in
early 1996, the crosswalk will be removed

tions for closure are done properly,
not in a rush fashion."
Mr. Steele adds however that he is
pleased the Town has agreed to show
PACT any agreement before it is
signed and that the mayor has
acknowledged the organization's
expertise on the landfill issue.
"Somewhere in the whole process
we'll be there," he says. "We'll have
our experts ready. We have all the
research done. It's all available"
Mayor Arthurs could not be
reached for comment.
New home sales
down slightly
in Pickering
AJAX-PICKERING — Sales of new homes were up in
Ajax in September, but down in Pickering.
The Greater Toronto Home Builders' Association
reports 53 new homes sold in Pickering, including 47 free -
bold units and six condominiums. That's down from
August, when 58 homes changed bands.
In Ajax, 50 homes — 38 freehold and 12 condos —
were bought in September, up from the August total of 38
units.
The builders' association notes new home sales last
month in the Greater Toronto Area totalled 1,232 units,
down from the August figure of almost 1,300.
Association president Myer Godfrey says the Septem-
ber slowdown is a temporary occurrence.
"Over the last several months, the new home market
has been mirrcxing the strength being demonstrated by the
resale housing market, and we expect that this pattern will
resume in the coming months," Mr. Godfrey says.
The association covers the area from Clarington to
Burlington and north to Newmarket.

GO train users derailed
as cops blow up briefcase
PICKERING — A brief-
case left at the Pickering
GO train station early Fri-
day was blown up by the
Durham Regional Police
bomb squad.
The incident forced
police to stop all trains
from using the station,
leaving about 1,500 early -
morning GO passengers
scrambling for a way to
work.
Police report a taxi dri-
ver parked at the station
saw a red van pull into the
parking lot around 4:45
a.m. A man got out of the
van, put a briefcase at the
front of a building and
returned to the vehicle,
which left the parking lot
with the lights off.
The taxi driver thought
the incident was suspicious,
so he called Durham police,
who blocked off the park-
ing lot to vehicles and
stopped trains from passing
the station.
The bomb squad took the
briefcase to the northeast
corner of the parking lot
and detonated it.
Police found nothing but
papers inside the briefcase.

Open the books
When it comes to the issue of expense accounts, public
school board trustees had better hurry up and open the books
before the unflattering shadow cast upon them grows any
darker.
The arrogance, or perhaps ignorance, of board director
Pauline Laing was unbelievable when she told Oshawa
trustee Kathleen Hopper trustees are no more entitled to
obtain expense account information than a member of the
public.
Perhaps Ms. Laing, and trustees who agree with her, forget
that it is public money the board's supervisory officers are
spending when they dip into those expense accounts. A mem-
ber of the public should be more than welcome to review
exactly where tax dollars are being spent at any level of gov-
ernment. Ms. Hopper, to her credit, has kept up a fight to take
a look at the expenses of the board's supervisory officers,
including the director.
The board's official position has been that it would only
honor such a request at the direction of the majority of
trustees, but will not meet the request of one individual.
What nonsense.
If an elected official on the board can't get a look at
expense accounts, the message going out to taxpayers is pret-
ty grim, we should continue to fund the school board through
our taxes, but we have absolutely no business trying to find
out what expenses we're reimbursing for, or why. School
board staff have provided trustees with a summary of expens-
es, but anyone — be it an elected trustee or a taxpayer —
should be given more detailed information if it's asked for.
We are assuming, after all, that no one has anything to hide.
Ms. Hopper has written to the Ministry of Education for
help, and the board followed with a letter of its own, standing
behind its decision.
The minister of education would do well to take the side of
Ms. Hopper. It's starting to look like the board doth protest
too much.

Trustees should reconsider
To the editor.
It is unfortunate that trustees of the
Durham Board of Education voted to
ban its sex education kit. While 1 have
not seen the kit, it sounded as if the main
emphasis was a fear of teaching about
condoms. One trustee is quoted as say-
ing it is "like giving them (teenagers) a
loaded gun".
I would say that analogy is incorrect.
Many teenagers ze already dealing with
a loaded gun and varying hormones.
The condom is an attempt to ensure that
no none gets injured or, at least, reduce
the risk should that gun go off.
As one sixteen -year-old male said to
me, "Just because we have condoms
does not mean we have the opportunity
or the desire." I personally think we
should place condom vending machines
in schools and teach kids how to use
them. Ignorance has never been a good
insurance policy. To assume that if you
don't know about sex you won't have it
is absurd. 1 have talked to too many par-
ents who have told me that they don't
know how their daughter got pregnant
because, after all, they never talked
about sex. To make an assertion that
only married people can have sex is nei-
ther responsible not realistic (and it
never has been... read the old birth
record hooks). AIDS and unwanted
pregnancies are too big and unforgiving
of a risk. I hope the trustees reconsider
their position.

On crime, the death penalty and young offenders
Editor's note: Thu folio mg ktters wen sub-

To tie editor:
I am writing to you to tell you I am not
pleased about the Young Offenders Act I'm a
seventeen -year-old high school student and
have been reading up on the subject. I find
myself getting angry.
The things I get mad about are all the
vicious crimes adolescents are getting away
with.
A 17 -year-old knows just as well as an 18 -
year -old that crime is wrong. It is time that
young offenders who commit violent crimes,
especially repeat offenders, be held accountable
for their crimes. I do not see how a 15- to 17 -
year -old does not know right from wrong. I am
17 and I can understand the concept.
I also do not understand how being under
the influence of any kind of drug or alcohol
should be a reason to escape punishment for
wrongdoing. These are just excuses for the
youth of today to do what they want.
We should quit blaming society, family, or
even peer prrssttre for today's youth crimes and
start blaming the people who commit them.

The Young Offenders Act should be more
strict and precise when it comes to murder.
Too many young people today are killing
and, depending on the severity of the crime and
the age, seem to be getting little time in jail
and/or help 6rom counsellors.
There have been many cases where there
have been two or more involved and each has
received different sentences. For example, in
May, 1994 there was a knife slaying of a mid-
night stroller, Brian Harris Baylen. The 14 -
year -old girl charged with this crime received a
two-year jail sentence. Her male partner, 16,
received eight years.
The defence was that she was strung out on
drugs and had a very unhappy home life. If this
defence held true for every young killer don't
you think they should be getting help before
crime becomes part of their lives? More coun-
selling would benefit these young offenders
much more than moving them around from jail
to jail, and court to court. Going straight to
counselling would be in their best interests.

To the editor:
Capital punishment should be reinstated in
Canada so that all the unspeakable crimes don't
happen anymore -
Paul Bernardo can potentially get out of
prison in 17 years. He tortured and killed two
young girls. He shouldn't be let out on the
streets to do it again. We can prevent so many
more deaths by killers who get out and strike
again. The threat of execution will prevent
potential murders from striking a fust time. We
need to stop the killing of innocent people.
Why should we, the taxpayers, pay to keep
them in jail? We pay for their food, water, soap
— they have it easy. They kill someone and go
to jail for 10 years and live on easy street, while
we spend each day working and making money
to pay for them.
By bringing capital punishment back in
Canada, we can save many innocent lives.

about sex
There has been much coverage
in this newspaper in recent weeks
concerning a controversial
teacher's resource kit that was
banned by the Durham Board of
Education.
The kit, aimed at high school
seniors, contains information and
candid discussion about such taboo
subjects as homosexuality, sexually
transmitted diseases and proper
condom use.
The board, in its wisdom, decid-
ed it was inappropriate for the
classroom. Although I disagree, the
decision was reached by trustees
democratically and deserves to
stand.
Yet what I found most intrigu-
ing about much of the debate sur-
rounding the issue was the inflam-
matory, alarmist reaction from, I
suspect, a vocal minority in the
region.
Both during and after the
debate, opponents of the resource
kit said it 'promoted' lifestyles (i.e.
homosexuality) and that it treated
the subject of sex and sexuality
lightly.
Trustee Faith Neumann suggest-
ed that, by using the teacher's kit,
the board was saying to kids: "Go
and play."
That statement, like so many
others heard in the conservative
camp, is insulting to the very peo-
ple Trustee Neumann is, evidently,
trying to protect.
And the notion of providing
these young adults with relevant
and current information about sex
is like suggesting that we are `pro-
moting' drinking and driving with

responsible drinking.
Further, a sampling of the very
teens who are being deprived of
this extremely important informa-
tion illustrates a portrait of earnest
young adults who are bright, articu-
late and assertive.
Nearly all of the high school
seniors we contacted as a part of
this ongoing story were offended
not only by the decision, but by the
manner in which it implicitly treats
them.
If it's true that by providing
teens with this information in can-
did fashion we may open a door to
issues not previously considered by
them, is it not also true that we are
opening the door to more igno-
rance, more stereotyping and more
danger by keeping it from them?

AJAX-PICKERING — When Marea Carey
first decided to do volunteer work in her com-
munity, all she knew was that she wanted to
help people on a one-on-one basis, face-to-
face.
That's why the Pickering resident chose to
work for Hospice Durham, an organization that
provides helpers and companions to the termi-
nally ill and their families.
"If you want to get involved on a personal
level, you can't get more personal than this,"
says Ms. Carey. "In a way it's a type of honor
to be let in on somebody's death."
Working as a hospice volunteer is not a job
for the squeamish. It means dealing with death
on a regular basis, a topic which Ms. Carey
notes most people try to "just sort of blank
out". The fad that most of us do try to blank it
out leaves a lot of terminally ill patients and
their families without companionship and help
at a time they need it most-
But
ostBut thanks to Hospice Durham's 60 volun-
teers, that doesn't need to be the case here. The
volunteers are available to visit terminally ill
patients to talk, share a cup of tea, go on an
outing, help with personal (not medical) care or
even just play cards. And just as importantly,
when the sick person can't be left alone,
they're there to provide a break to exhausted
family members who otherwise wouldn't be
able to get out of the house.
Clients are usually referred to Hospice
Durham by Durham Region Home Care, an
agency which co-ordinates home care services
here. But referrals can be made by anyone — a
doctor, a friend, or the patient can contact the
agency directly. The patient can be any age.
Hospice Durham is currently serving an 18 -
month -old cancer patient whose parents need
help so they can spend time with their other
children.
Clients frequently need companionship more
than anything else, notes Hospice Durham
executive director Barbara Hiemstra, even
when they have family members available.
"Often patients have some real fears about
what's going to happen and they don't feel
they can talk to their families about it, but
they'll unburden themselves to an outsider."
Ms. Carey, an author and part-time book-
store clerk, has accepted that burden from 10
clients over the two -and -a -half years she has
worked as a Hospice Durham volunteer. That
may seem like an unbearable load for a volun-
teer, but she insists the work is not depressing
as many tend to believe.
"I'm a reasonably strong individual. I think
hospice work attracts that type of person."
Ms. Carey says her belief in an afterlife sus-
tains her through it all, though she doesn't want
to sound like a "religious maniac" because
she's not.
"Dying's just a part of life. It's your own
inner convictions that carry you through."
She admits it's harder when the clients arc
younger, such as the 32 -year-old mother of two
toddlers who died of breast cancer only four
days after Ms. Carey starting seeing her.
Most of her clients have been "way too
young to die" — in their 40s and 50s.
But, Ms. Carey says, it's also sad that people
often wait too long to call Hospice Durham. It
doesn't give the volunteer enough time to get
to know the patient, and it delays for too long

get "emotionally exhausted".
She maintains no one should feel guilty
about asking for help because it's natural to
have difficulty coping with a terminal illness.
"Asking for help is not a sign of weakness."
Ms. Carey has been fortunate enough to
have had plenty of time to develop a good rela-
tionship with her current client, 44 -year-old
Dianne Langstone, a cancer patient.
The two were first brought together last

because they share a common interest in dogs.
"1 was on my own a good part of the day,"
says Ms. Langstone, adding it's been nice to
have someone to do things with, especially

available on weekends because of work.
Ms. Langstone adds she's been able to dis-
cuss with Ms. Carey things she hasn't been
able to talk about with friends because friends
often just want to emphasize the positive and
don't want to discuss some of the issues she
faces as a terminally ill person.
"1 know they mean well but they're avoiding
the subject and sometimes I just need to talk
about these things — not always but once in a
while "

AJAX-PICKERING — Ajax -Pickering
General Hospital is conducting education
sessions on breast health Tuesday to com-
memorate Breast Health Awareness Month.
Theme for the month is "Breast Health -
Understanding Your Own Risk".
In 1995, approximately 17,700 Canadian
women will be diagnosed with breast cancer
and about 5,400 will die from the disease.
Durham statistics indicate 603 cases and
seven deaths here in 1993.
Breast cancer tends to occur earlier in life
than other cancers and earlier than other
major causes of death, such as heart attacks
and strokes.
The Diagnostic Imaging Department's
education sessions at the hospital will be held
from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the east lobby.
There'll be literature and videos on topics
such as mammograms, self breast examina-
tion and post -mastectomy.
The mammogram room will be open for
viewing and staff will be on hand to answer
questions regarding the procedure.

Pickering to host Ontario men's curling showcase

AJAX-PICKERING — The new curling
season brings with it a number of first-
class events — one to this area and another
a short drive away.
The Ontario Men's Curling
Championship for the 1996 Ontario Nokia
Cup will be contested at the Pickering
Recreation Complex Feb. 6 to 11. A new
sponsor for the event was announced in

squad took another step
toward an undefeated
league season by upending
cross-town rival Pine
Ridge Secondary School
Pumas Thursday after-
noon.
In what could have been
a preview of the Lake
Ontario Secondary School
Athletics senior semi-final
contest, the Spartans over-
came a shaky first half to
post a 21-7 victory over
the Pumas in the game at
Dunbarton High.
Although his charges are
undefeated with a perfect
4-0 record, a shoo-in to
finish first in the LOSSA
standings, and the number -
seven ranked team in the
Toronto Star top 10 poll of
Toronto and area high
school football squads,
Spartans' head coach Peter
Kaiser was unhappy with
the team effort.
"It was an ugly game
because of the turnovers.
There were a lot of missed
tackles and a lot of hold-
ing penalties. We should-
n't be taking those kind of
penalties at this point in
the season. The bottom
line is we came out with
the win. In the first half,
we just weren't there, but
we had a much better sec-
ond half."
Pumas' head coach Andy
Carnovale was rather
upbeat, saying he's look-
ing forward to a possible
rematch with the Spartans
in the LOSSA semi-finals.
"We're very capable of
playing with them any-
time, any day. Our guys
are starting to come
together. They have a lot
they're starting to believe
in themselves."

The Trillium Dog Fanciers host
an all -breed dog show Friday
through Sunday at the Metro East

The show runs from 9 a.m. to 6

Breeders will be available to talk
