OCTOBER 15,1"5 Paramedics recall saving Pickering man By MARIANNE TAKACS srAff RI`"M AJAX-PICKERWG — Tom Wulff does- n't remember anything about Aug. 19, the day his heart stopped and he was snatched from the jaws of death by two ambulance attendants who had only recently learned to operate the piece of equipment they used to save his life. But it's a day Ajax and Pickering Ambu- lance Service paramedics Tim Calvert and Walter Logozar will probably remember for- ever. "1 think it was incredible," says Mr. Calvert "When something like this happens it definitely makes up for all the training and all the time spent studying." If Mr. Wulff, a 43 -year-old installer for Bell Canasta and father of two, had fallen so ill only three weeks earlier he likely would have died instead of becoming the first per- son to have his life saved by one of the ambulance service's new defibrillators. They work by sending a jolt of electricity into the patient's chest to restart a failing heart. Mr. Calvert and Mr. Logozar had to use the defibrillator five times on Mr. Wulff, over a few harrowing minutes that seemed like an eternity to his wife. Nance, who will never forget that day either. The couple had been sitting and talking in their Bowler Drive home in Pickering around 11:30 am., when Mrs. Wulff noticed her husband was "gasping for breath". A pre%iousty healthy than, he had been diag- nosed June 26 with cardiac myopathy, a form of damage to the heart caused by a viral infection. She irrnnediately realized how serious the situation was and ca"ed 9-1-1 "I started CPR because 1 knew his heart had stopped. lie wasn't breathing any more and there was no pulse. - The fire department arrived first and start - cd what Mrs. Wulff describes as "real CPR". "The,. had him bouncing off the floor," she recalls with some horror. Then the ambulance arrived with the defibrillator. The attendants administered a jolt of electricity three times without success, then resumed CPR for a minute to get Mr. Wulffs blood flowing and re -oxygenate his brain. It took two more jolts from the defib- rillator to restart his heart and get a pulse going. N le. Calvert and Mr. Lugczar recall they were somewhat anxious about using the defibrillator because they'd only had it since July 28 and had never used it on a person before. But the two didn't let that nervous- ness get in the way of their work with the equipment, for which they'd been thorough- ly trained. "It's almost tunnel vision," explains Mr. Calvert. "You're doing the protocol that needs to be done. You're dealing with the patient and not dealing with the ernotion that comes out after." After being resuscitated, Mr. Wulff was taken to Ajax -Pickering General Hospital, then transferred to Toronto General Hospital. He spent six days in the cardiac care ward there and suffered three more attacks of car- diac arrhythmia and one more cardiac arnat When he'd go into arrhythmia, recalls his wife, hospital staff would corn in and "ham- mer" him with a punch in the chest. Mr. Wulff remembers "absolutely noth- ing" of this. "I woke up six days after in the hospital Pot knowing a thing. I don't even know when I went down (with the first cardiac arrest)-" In fact, when he finally regained con- sciousness, Mr. Wulff thought he was in hospital near the cottage where he and his wife had been the day before his cardiac arrest. He didn't remember coming home to Pickering. Mr. Wulff has been touched by the kind- ness of the ambulance attendants who have done more than save his life. '11hey've been phoning and checking up on me. It was good to have some support. If it wasn't for them, l wouldn't be here." For their part, Mr. Calvert and Mr. Logozar are thrilled Mr. Wulff is out of hos- pital and was able to attend the ceremony Thursday where they and other ambulance service personnel received certificates offi- cially recognizing their qualification to use the defibriltators. "It's wonderful to sec him doing so well," says Mr. Logozar. " Iltat's the whole point" There's still a long way to go, however, for Mr. Wulff. He's had a defibrillator implanted in his chest and is doing fine. But his heart needs to recover more from the viral infection that damaged it, and if that recovery is not sufficient he may be facing a heart transplant in about a year. There was also praise from the consultants for the Picker- ing Civic Complex as a "spectacular building" around which the downtown can be designed. Councillors were told a number of meeting, the con- sultants have held with Town staff, various governmcnt agencies and the public have identified particular problems they hope to address in their recommendations. These include: J The lack of good pedestri- an access to the GO train sta- tion from downtown, because liverpool Road is not consid- ered pedcstrian-friendly. The consultants will likely recom- mend a bike and pedestrian bridge across Hwy. 401, J Major intersections that are difficult for pedestrians to cross and major streets with inhospitable sidewalks. J The lack of a connection between the Pickering Civic Complex and the Pickering Town Centre. (The area between them was described as currently being "a big space for buses rather than people"-) J The lack of design consis- tency in the downtown. For example, there is at least one street where four different kinds of streetlights can be found. Only six members of the public attended the meeting Thursday night in the Council chamber at Town Hall. Bill Hicks, president of the South Pickering Seniors, asked the Town to consider expanding the seniors' facili- ty on Liverpool Road because it's no longer big enough to accommodate all the people who want to use it. Phil Frampton of the Taxpayers Coalition of Pickering -Ajax wanted to know how much the Province is going to cut back funding to munici- palities. (Town officials don't know and have to wait for an announcement from Queen's Park expected early in November, he was told.) Len Quigley, president of the Pick- ering Hockey Association, asked the surface to accommodate the associa- tion's overflow of players and other user groups as well. He noted com- munity groups and sponsors would help cover the cost. Rev. Glenn Brown of Dunbarton- Fairport United Church suggested the Town should improve transit services. He said he's received a lot of com- plaints from people who say they can't get around in Pickering except during the rush hours because transit service is so infrequent. A fifth citizen urged the Town not to neglect youth programs next year, and the sixth simply wanted to know about how the Town's finances are conducted. "1 would have liked to have seen some more people," said Mayor Wayne Arthurs after the meeting. But, he added, "for a first effort with some constrained time frames, it worked." The mayor expected more commu- nity group representatives to attend, 11 tions. (A handful did arrive after the meeting ended a little over half an hour after starting, but they said they had only come to listen and weren't planning to make presentations.) Next year, the mayor would like to see the meeting planned earlier and advertised longer. "I guess it's just going to take time to catch on," said Ward I Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner. "l don't think we should stop." Councillor Brenner suggested the meeting might be better publicized next time and perhaps held in a more informal setting, or even through cable TV with citizens being invited to call in. "A lot of people maybe do not understand the (budget) process. 1 think we need to do more education involving John Q. Public." However, the public may attend and partici- pate in any of the sessions held during the day_ Ward 2 local Councillor Sherry Scnis noted she was disappointed to see the rather small turnout at the last pub- lic session held Sept 28, and urged more citizens to attend the Nov. 2 meeting. This planning study of the downtown core covers the area bounded by Kingston Road on the north, the Hydro corridor on the east, Hwy. 401 on the south and Pine Creek on the west_ Town Council will be pre- sented the study's final rec- ommendations and imple- mentation plan on Nov. 27. Ask a contentious question and you'll get a con- tentious answer; barbs are starting to fly as councils meet to formalize positions on the feasibility of creating a 'super region', as requested by a provincial task force. "Go suck ice cubes," was the blunt message given to Oshawa councillor Brian Nicholson by Whitby col- league Joe Drumm after Oshawa council endorsed amal- gamation of the city with Whitby and Courtice. City councillors were showing "gall" to have such opinions, and arc merely trying to make "a land grab", councillor Drumm believes. For its part, Oshawa wouldn't mind amalgamating with neighbors but wants to abolish regional govern- ment, because, as Councillor Nicholson explained, the City doesn't want another level of government "sticking its nose into our business-. In Ajax, councillors felt Metro Toronto should solve its own financial woes; Mayor Jim Witty noted what happens to the cast of Ajax isn't of concern. "If Oshawa and Clarington want to (amalgamate) fine, let 'cm do it". Clarington hasn't adopted a formal position on the matter while Pickering asked the Province to leave its borders alone. While forming their opinions, politicians have to remember the last word belongs to taxpayers. We pre- dict Durham Region taxpayers will shut the door on Metro Toronto and points west. In the meantime, it's fine for municipalities to draw their wagons into a circle if they feel their territory is being threatened; it's fine to offer up differing opinions and various viewpoints. It's OK to disagree. But let's drop the insults, sarcastic comments and we -don't -care - what -you -do attitude. We're all in this together, for the moment at least. On Saturday, Sept. 23, our Siamese cat named Angel was let out by our five and six-year-old boys. She isn't allowed out often, and when she is, it is just on our front lawn. This particu- lar day, we think she may have wan- dered further, and is now either lost, or someone is purposely keeping her, as she is a very beautiful, young Siamese. If this is the case, I pray that you search your heart and find some sym- pathy for two very heart -broken chil- dren as well as myself. She was our first pet and we all love her dearly. In response to Ms_ Wainwrights' letter in the Oct. 4 edition, I would like to clear up a few facts that she either is unaware of or left out to support her point of view. I feel obliged to tell her that many children do not live in an 'ideal world'. In addition to providing quality care for kids of working parents, day-care centres can offer early intervention for children requiring special services. They provide ESL children an English- speaking environment and they provide a single, working mother an opportunity to provide for her children instead of collecting mother's allowance. They can provide a child a stable, warm and loving environment he or she may not get at home because of an ill parent and they pro% ide first-rate care for over 30,(111(1 children in Metro. In fact, licensed child-care centres are evalu- ated by parents on Boards of Directors, Public Health, Fire Marshal, the Ministry of Community and Social Services, Metro Children's service and in some cases the Board of Education. Perhaps too much bureaucracy, but definitely not an environment so deplorable that a child could suffer "emotional and psycho- logical damages". Moreover, this situation can be seen as far superior than the home of an unli- censed, untrained and isolated caregiver. Studies show Early Childhood Education provides day-care children with many skills required to be successful in school. Most have advanced social skills helping them to work effectively with other children. Children who have experienced quality day care in a licensed environment can actually help stay-at-home kids when they enter school. As role models they can show other children how to play with one anoth- er. They are little people who are self-assured and able to develop relationships with adults and children and they can teach and learn with other kids, being empathetic towards different abili- ties, cultures and living standards — something mam of us as kids didn't experience. Specifically, children who are 'at risk% who have not had early education, cost the society up to seven times more than those who receive good quality child care. Individuallv, I believe Ms. Wainwright has made an admirable decision. Her children are lucky. However, for those like myself who are proud to be contributing to society via stimulat- ing the economy and more importantly for those who are less fortunate or choose child care for a variety of good reasons, we cannot collapse this system that so many children have come to rely on. The turmoil this would cause would be so chaotic that I shudder to think of the damage it might cause, such as lost jobs, more welfare, more children in jeopardy with less services to help them, less tax dollars generated from work- ing mother and less spending. Cutting child care will save little and cost far more than most realize. Subsidizing an efficient system that helps to promote a quality environ- ment for children who are cared for in a licensed, group setting makes more sense than suggesting children should suffer because some parents are required to work and can't, or they don't have a family member to provide cheap child care for them. Working to ensure child care and the chil- dren in them are valued has opened my eyes wider than 1 had ever imagined. Families that work have come to depend on a system that is, as I write, on the chopping block. Not all fami- lies are in turmoil, not all are unwed teenage mothers. In fact, manv are like you and me, who are struggling to make ends meet to enjoy the perks of just being a family. I really hope that if our child-care system does fall apart, my tax dollars that support our libraries, parent and child drop-in centres, parks and recreation centres continue to subsidize families like the stay-at-home Wainwrights and mine. If he's not being egged by Oktoberfest militants in Kitchener -Waterloo or cowering in Kingston country clubs as angry pro- testers call for his bead, be's being held up as a poster boy for the Yes forces in Quebec. I'll bet you a 30 -percent provin- cial tax cut Premier Harris didn't count on becoming a voice for the separatists when he was elected in June. Personally, I wouldn't do busi- ness with any political leader who has been a I-iberal, a Conservative, and a Bloc Quebecois MP, all in times near enough past that I can remember them. 1 would also won- der about this Man Who Would Be King and what be may decide to be, say, tomorrow. And then there's Monsieur Parizeau, who I simply don't like. Period. Ontario Premier Harris may or may not have a problem with judg- ing character (the jury is still out on Transportation Minister Al Pallidini), but he sure didn't call things right early on in the Quebec referendum debate. I'm glad that he has since taken pains to more clearly express the views of Ontarians because I believe Quebec, should it become a sovereign nation, will have to line up like all the others which clamor to lend us more money. And party ideology aside, I believe that if there is anyone Premier Harris should consider doing business with, it's Daniel Johnson. He's the only one whose fire and brimstone speeches ring even remotely true. And everyone knows there's nothing like a good threat of extinc- tion to stir up the masses. But then there's this: No matter who wins the referendum debate, trade will have to continue, either through existing arrangements or newly negotiated deals. The decision to ban smoking on all property owned by the Durham Board of Education comes just two weeks aper trustees voted to lobby the povin- cial government to once again allow students to smoke in designated areas on high school property. That decision followed complaints by Buie residents living near schools whose yards are being used as smoking spots. Many have difficulty gig in and out of their driveways, while others have complained of snide to littering and ormat iug on their property. Some trustees, mean- while, expressed concern for the safety of students forced to the streets to smoke. One student near O'Neill Collegiate Voca- tional Institute in Oshawa was struck by a car, while there have been numerous near -misses. At their regular board meeting Tuesday, trustees approved a new policy pro- hibiting smoking inside any board building — thus alter- ing a previous policy which "discouraged" smoking inside board buildings. The Raiders settled for a 4-4 draw with the Central Ontario Wolves in the season opener. Matthew Carroll led the way with a two -goal effort. Brett Connolly and Matthew Thrift potted one apiece. Brett Small assisted on two goals, with John Scrymgeour and Andrew Dissanayake each adding one helper. Richmond Hill fell to the Raiders by a 5-2 count in the second game of the season. Kyle Tate, Connolly, Joey McColm, Dissanayake and Small scored for Ajax -Pickering. Yorkton assists went to Small with two, Kyle Foster, Thrift, Michael Rocca.
