DURHAM — The separate school board
is "disappointed by the pro%incial go%ern-
ment's latest round of" cuts. in which a pilot
project for kindergarten -aged students was
axed.

The Progressi%e Conser%atives announced
recently they won't fund the project for
about 5t N2 junior and senior kindergarten stu-
dents. who would ha%e attended full-day
classes beginning in September.

PICKERING — An alternative to
an airport here may already exist.
Pickering ctmncil was told Tuesday.
Allan Rubin, operator and manager
of !Markham Airport Inc., feels his
company could '"provide short and
long-term operational facilities to
meet the needs of Durham Region.
"Wc can no longer afford ongoing
studies, reports and public hearings
(on future airport needs) that do not
have the financial resources to imple-
ment the recommendations," said W.
Rubin. "Now is the time to explore
private sector participation in future
airpt+rts."
He opposes a commuter/commer-
cial airport in Pickering initially pro-
posed by the federal government in
the 1970s because "it doesn't take
into account the priNate sector"..And,
the cost to taxpayers would he "insur-
mountable".
Markham Airport officials are
"ready and willing to sit down and
discuss a beneficial approach for all
parties.

Transport Canada, Markham Airport

AJAX-PICKERING — People
wanting to join the hone marrow reg-
istry can do so at a Sunday festival.
The Red Cross will offer an infor-
matkm session on bone marrow testing
at A Festival of Ilope where interested
people can have their marrow tested
afterwards.
There will also be information on
the Leukemia Research Fund.
The festival. a Dollars for Daniel
event. is in support of Daniel Burton.
The Pickering resident and student at
Ecole catholiyue Notre - Dame -de -la-
Jeunesse in Ajax was diagnosed with
leukemia three years ago at age sir.
Following an exhaustive and expen-
sive search by his parents, a bone mar-
row donor was located recently, just
days after Daniel suffered a relapse.
He is scheduled to undergo a bone
marrow transplant in September fol -

Muggers sever artery
of gas bar attendant
PICKERIING — A 1,"a, station attendant is "lucky"
to he alive after suffering a severed artery in his neck
following an attack here Wednesday night, police say.
The 18 -year-old Pickering resident wxs closing up
the Oko gas station at Hwy. 2 and Fairport Road
when he was attacked shortly after i l p-tn-, Durham

He was struck with a beer bottle, which cut the
artery in his neck. Ambulance attendants arrived

Pickering groups urged to help plan town's future
PICKERING — Community groups
here are being invited to help shape
Pickering's future.
The invitation was made following a
July 22 meeting_ of local associations
called to determine the feasibility of
their participation in the public review
of the Town's Draft Official Plan.
To aid the public consultation process,
all Pickering community associations are
urged to attend a meeting in the council
committee room at the Pickering Civic
Complex Wednesday. Aug. 16 at 7:30
p.m.

of Pearson International Airport lost
to a new, site, such as Pickerin,_.
N1r. Rubin said discussions are
under way with the Province now
regarding his company's prolx)sal.
Ajax Citizens Together (PACT) for the
Environment, hopes to finalize a review
format at the meeting for the Draft Offi-
cial Plan and set up subcommittees to
look at specific areas of the document. A
complete timetable for the process will
be worked out by the groups and the
Town's planning department.
Associations attending the meeting are
encouraged to supply a list of issues
their members believe should be
addressed.
Topics to be examined during the
Official Plan review include planning,
the environment, heritage and the protec-
tion of agricultural lands.

The music you hear emanating from Alex
Robertson Park in Pickering next weekend will
carry with it a note of hope.
The Durham Wide Youth Crusade '95 is the
brainchild of four local youths who have
returned from the brink of drug addiction and
crime.
They want to share their message of renewal
and faith with other adolescents in the communi-
ties of Ajax and Pickering who may be mired in
a cycle of substance abuse. crime, or worse.
And the event has been embraced by other
groups in the community which are helping to
sponsor the event and ensure its success.
The event is inter -denominational and open to
any teen in Durham Region, making it a 'bordcr-
less' event. At the show, you can meet like-
minded people who may share some of your
experiences and who want to make changes in
their lives.
The +'cry idea of the Youth Crusade deserves
reco•_nition. It was conceived, organized and
presented by four motivated young men. It
hrin__s together a diverse group of musicians,
sOunds and experiences. But it contains a corn -
mon theme of hope.
Pass on the word in your neighborhood, invite
friends you have in Whitby. Oshawa or
Clarineton. and go out to be a part of Youth
Crusade '95. It won't cost you a cent to get in.
You may not find salvation, but you'll have a
place to start. And you'll have people just like
you there sharing the experience.
That's worth the price of admission.

DURfIAM — The provincial gov-
ernment's decision to move ahead
with a bike helmet law is "a good
idea", according to a teenager who
credits a helmet with Savin: his life.
"if I hadn't been wearing a helmet.
I probably would have died.- Justin
McKeiver says of an accident two
years ago in which he was struck on a
country road by a van travelling 90
kilometres an hour.
The Claremont bow was thrown
about four feet in the air before hittine
the ground in the accident, the
day after his 12th birthday.
Though Justin's helmet was
cracked an inch on the outside
and half -way up on the inside.
he suffered just a slight concur -
cion, as well as a bruised kidney
and heart.
-He's living proof' of the
need for bike helmets, says his
mother Cathy, who was told by
police following the accident
that her son was -one of the
very lucky ones.-

becomes mandatory on Oct. 1. A per-
son found cycling without a Canadian
Standards Association approved -hel-
met can he fined up to S90.
The bill allows for a warning and a
48-hour period in which the rider may
be allowed to obtain a helmet.

DURHAM -- It's been a tough
journey for kayaker Glenn Gillespie,
but so too has the path for those peo-
ple he strives to help.
The Burlington native has just
completed his marathon 1,000 mile
Journey of Hope, his personal mission
to raise S40,000 to aid cancer
research.
Starting from New Brunswick on
June 2, he has faced ci,eht-foot waves.

"People ask me why I didn't come
in the other direction, with the cur-
rent. I tell them that people with can-
cer go against the current all the
time."
Arriving in (Xhaw•a last week. the
32-vea.r-old man is no stranver to the
effects of cancer.

cancer 1.3 years ago and my father
and sister are survivors of cancer." he
says. "My best friend recently lost
half of his lung to cancer."

stand by and watch so many of his
loved ones tight to survive.

of cancer research." he says.
His biggest inspiration was meeting
the man best known for his personal
efforts for cancer research.
"I first met Terry Fox in New
Brunswick when he was just starting
his journey," he explains. "lie told me
what he was doing and I a<ked him
what was his motivation. lie told me
he had sten a lot of little kids lighting
against cancer."

before the runner died.
That meeting was the first step in
his own journey. The second step
carne out of the blue.
1 was kayaking off of Burlington
and while I was paddling I felt this
warm air hit," he says. "It vac weird,
but 1 felt at peace with myself and it
was at that time I thought about doing
something to help."

their truck, serving_ as driver and pub-
lic relations officer.
Yet each mile, he knows he must
continue because each mile is dedicat-
ed to a person that is fighting cancer
or who has lost the battle.
"I continue for someone other than
myself," he says. "I*hat is the motiva-
tion."
His first mile was dedicated to the
memory of Terry Fox. Along the way
he has dedicated his efforts to family
and friends and to the names of peo-
ple given to him from people from all
over.

In Fredericton, a little girl named
Lindsay came out to wish him well on
hisjourney.
"She was diagnosed with a rare
form of cancer," Mr. Gillespie recalls.
"She had about a 30 per cent chance
of surviving, yet she seemed more
concerned about my safety than her-
self."
Just as he knows there is an end to
his journey, he never questions that
the road will lead to a cure for cancer.

Peace Games and came away with top honors for

hundreds of art students from the
Durham Board of Education
enter their natural habitat.
Then travel to a place (with
the enchanting name of Camp
White Pinc i where their imagi-
nations are allowed to run wild
and they can create. uninhibited
by the strictures of the re,_,ular
school system.
It's called the Visual Art.
Camp and it ccichrttecl its 15th
birthday this year.
The camp, located in llalibur-
ton. is an art -immersion pro-
�r3rrt_
The idea is to brim_ together
students — who arc either gifted
or who have a ;_real love of the
subject — to spend an intensive
week in a natural setting while
bcimg taught h% a whole troop of
an instructors. including profes-
sional artists and school board
teachers.
But this year's camp, which
ran June 1 ;-_ 1, saw the end of
an era.
Now that the camp-, I5th
birthday candles have been
blown (wt. the Visual Art: Camp
is entering a challenging new
sta,`e in its txlstence.
Thr Durham Board of Educa-
tion, which has been runninE the
camp since its inception has
reduced its f undin,_ over the past
three years. and by next year. it
will have abandoned camp alto-
-ether.
Suzanne Brochu-Ranta. pro-
gram facilitator for arts for the
board, ha, been the camp orga-
nizer over the past three years.

Visual Arts Camp running

And she makes it clear she
doesn't blame the school hoard
for cutting its last threads of
involvement with the camp.
"Tire board has had some real-
ly tough decisions to make over
the past three years. They've
been trying to cut where it will
hurt the least.-
Neyerthtics,, she is concerned
about what she sees as a trend in
society to tar,_ct arts funding
when econornic tines are tough.
She points out that other
areas, like spirts, are cut hack to
a lesser extent, while the scissors
have been wielded liberally on
arts programs
"The minute there's a reces-
sion- it's the arts funding that
suffers."

ning simultaneously.
As funding was cut, after he
left. the out -of -packet cost for
each student to attend the camp
increased — reaching 5495 this
year. As a result, the camp popu-
lation dropped off dramatically.
Now, that the Durham board
has all but pulled out complete-
ly, he says he worries about the
calibre of staff, outside of the
artists themselves.
-The camp has generally been
staffed by about 70 per cent
teachers (from the board). Those
teachers basically like kids and
tend to have a little more con-
cern for them, and I'm wonder-
ing if they can hire new staff
who will really have that same
personal commitment. We can
only hope they will "

will give a rare solo appearance: just

Guitar phenomenon Jeff Ilealey and
his band have been at the forefront of
the Canadian blurs scene since the
release of debut album Sec The Light
in 1988. The album went triple plat-

Tom Stephen) recently released its Lat-

Finally, Colin James will come

the stage with his tightly -knit rock out-

Energy tips
There are a few things you can do to conserve
energy. Here is a list of 20 things you can do to save
energy and you hard-earned dollars.
1) Raise your air-conditioning thermostat in the
summer. For each degree higher, you'll cut your
energy use by eight per cent.
2) Turn off incandescent lights when you are not using
them. especially in the surnmer when they produce
unwanted heat.
3) Use low -wattage light bulbs in halls and other
places where no close-up tasks occur. However
using a single, high -wattage bulb is more cost-
efficient than using two lower -wattage bultws.
4) Long -life light bulbs usually use more electricity
than regular bulbs of the same wattage. Use Iong-life
bulbs only in locations where access is difficult.
5) Use high -efficiency light bulbs in your outside
security lights. Put them on a time or photoelectric
switch.

First-time homebuyers who want to
ensure investment value are wise to look
carefully at the features in a home. say
Canada's professional real estate
appraisers.
A cross -Canada survey of residential
appraisal specialists who are members of
the Appraisal Institute of Canada showed
that several features were most likely to
add to a home's value:
* Master bedroom and ensuite bath
combination.
* Separate living room and dining rooms.
* Fan-dly rooms.
* Garage.
These features. appraisers say. can
improve chances of resale at agood value
in the future.

"Choose a house in a location close to
amenities. constructed with quality
materials and with adequate space for
future additions and improvements.- said a
Halifax appraiser.
"Go for quality." added an appraiser
from Ottawa. "Look at subdivisions built
by a variety of builders and shop around.
What does the sumtscape look like? How
are the rooms laid out? Are they of
adequate size and attractive?"
Appraisers were also asked if they
thought first-time buyers should consider
the size of a house over the presence of
luxury features. given an equal selling
price. The answer. they agreed. was to
choose the largest house for the money and
then add the luxury features as needed.

For buyers able to afford luxury
features. appraisers recommended looking
for mainfloor laundry rooms, two -car
garages and energy-saving features such as
high -efficiency furnaces.
Professional real estate appraisers
routinely provide value estimates to banks,
trust companies and mortgage brokers as
well as private firms and individual
property owners. The Appraisal Institute of
Canada awards "AACI" and "CRA -
designations to those appraiser-, who have
met stringent requirements for education
and experience.
