"It's easier m be part of your community

says Jaki MacKinnon, executive detector of

Ms. MacKirtoon says tris type of program,
where etildnett get out on field trips in the

exanly the kind of environment youngsters
need to develop to their fullest potential.
"You don't thrive through isolation," she
says. "You thrive through being a pert of your

Our Homes is rapidly gaining a reptttation
in We community for its fresh approach. As
veep as permanent residents, the homes also
offer respite care for families who care fcx
their children at h(xne.

Ms. Gulliver believes a number of

increasing services depends on funding.
Our Homes is funded mainly by the Min-
iury of Community and Social Services, with
a small amount of money coming from futxi-
raising events anti membership fees. Families
with children at Our Homf~c make a monthly
contribution, sometimes ac little as $50 a
month, de}x'rtding on their ability to pray.
However, like most provincially funded
pmjecte, Our H(xnes was told it must trim

Pickering Hydro, says a recently
released province -wide study of 80
power utilities ranks the local supplier
favorably against the others. Pickering
had a better performance last year than
average large and medium sized utilities
in temps of the average ember of cus-
tomers without powerthe average dtra-
tion of each outage, and the number of
times each customer was affectod.
Since Pickering Hydro introducW its
computerized system for controlling
breakers and switches five years ago,
says Mr. Wiersma, the studies have
shown a marked improvement in the
utility's performance.

Fiscal tusion
The promise of a different nuclear ftKnre in Dmham
Region was cut short last week with news the federal
government wouldn't spend $575 mil zoo to support a
siting bid for a new energy -from -fusion project-
And the news doesn't sit well with (larirtgton Mayor
Diane Haeme, who tarred an experimental fusion reac-
tor in Culham England with outer top Dtmixtrn Regioxt
officials earix-r this year.
Her view of nuclear fusion as an ahei native means of
power it one that supports its development right here in
Durham Region. If approved, Durham would benefit
form the development of a site at the Darlington Nuclear
C,encratim_ station, a few miles eau of the Pickering
plant along lake Ontario's shone.
But in an era of government fiscal restraint, the fund-
ing rmluirctl to bankroll a siting bid for constrtc7io n of a
fusxm facility wads simply too much to ask.
Iitat's unfortunate considering the potential henelits
of a new era in nuclear power gerwrAm. If kxaiLd here
in Durham Region. the prtiject could open the dcxr to)

Killing the project before it even gets off the gnxm

V REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGY
Children should know who their parents are
To the editor:
I admire and support the research into
reproductive techniques, as long as the end
result is a child who knows who both his or
her parents are.
The sperm hank which uses donor sperm
to impregnate is, 1 believe, something that
no one in that industry — or its users —
have thou,,ht through.
I am avolunteer like many others with
Parent minders. We all meet (daily) adult
adoptees who don't know who they really
are.
They have, perhaps, wonderful adoptive
PUD
parents and have been cherished all their
lives, but they still long to actually know
who they are.
Someone conceived with an anonymous
and calculated act can never, ever find out
anything about their birth father and his
family.
The birth mother who desperately wanted
a child has received her wish, but when her
child is an adult, what can she say about the
other parent (without totally fahricatinvY.)
Medical, school. insurance forms always
have to be filled in. llavin_ to write the
answer '1 don't know' is an empty feeling.
n You
u+NDo rp
I knew there are others who can see the
end result here t(x).
So throw your support in and call or write
to your membra of provincial parliament and
Health Minisler Diane Marleau and explain
your feelings.
Sperm hanks used to preserve seed from a
loving husband, who is perhaps dying or
will not be fertile after a while, are a terrific
idea.
For anv other reason except for research
it is a very selfish act.

Fedspullplugon fusion reactor
By CINDY UPSHALL
DURHAM STAFF
DURHAM — The fed-
eral government won't
fund a bid to put a $20 -
billion fusion test reactor
in Clarington.
In a letter sent to
Oshawa's Nuclear Aware-
ness Project, Ann McLel-
Ian, Minister of Natural
Resources, says, "The
government is not pre-
pared to help fund a siting
bid or construction and
operation of ITER."
Ms. McLellan contin-
ues, "'Ibe government has
made it clear that fiscal
prudence does not permit
us to help fund a project
that is not an energy or
science priority..."
ITER is a joint project
by Europe, Japan, Russia
and the United States to
build a fusion reactor to
research fusion as a viable
source of energy in the
future. Fusion is a process
by which large amounts of
energy are released when
two atoms, such as deu-
terium and tritium, are
joined.
The Canadian Fusion
Fuel Technology Project
(CFFTP), a division of
Ontario Hydro, led the
campaign to locate ITER

in Canada. The CFFTP
proposed the reactor be
located near either the
Bruce or Darlington gen-
erating stations, with the
federal government kick-
ing in close to $600 mil-
lion for the final project
and around S3 million for
the preparation of the bid.
Durham MP Alex Shep-
herd says he has been in
close contact with several
ministries about the issue.
so when he received Ms.
McLellan's letter on July
28 it came as no surprise.
"We don't have $575
million to spend," he says.
Mr. Shepherd believes
fusion, if developed,
could solve many of the
world's energy problems,
but "we simply can't
afford it. Government is
all about priorities and
about what you can and
can't afford."

Youth Crusade's -roots
run deep in P1ckering
❑ Up to 2,000 expected to
see Durham Wide Youth
Crusade this month
By STEPHEN LATEGAN
STAFF REPORTER
PICKERING — Thousands of
youth are expected to embrace this
summer's alternative to crime and
substance abuse.
From Aug. 17 to 19, Alex Robert-
son Park will play host to Durham
Wide Youth Crusade '95, a concert
designed to reach out to young people
throughout the Region.
"1 think the main problem today
with youths is that there's a lack of
hope," says Erik Fountas. one of four
local youths organizing the campaign.
" %*c're trying to make hope a reality
in their life. when a young person has
a new sense of hope and meaning,
he's less apt to go down that road of
crime and violence."
Air. Fountas and a small group of
friends who had turned to crime and
drug use and whose lives have been
turned around, wanted to provide the
same opportunity to other teens.
"We can relate our message to the
youth today, telling them there is a
better way out," he says.
They decided a concert would be
the best way to reach their target.
Their first attempt to mount such an
event was two years ago in Toronto; a
"complete failure" which no one
attended.
The second try brought the four
friends home to Ajax, where a suc-
cessful concert at Rotary Park drew a
crowd of more
than 6000.
This year, up
to 2.000 are
expected at the
event in Picker-
ing. in the works
► since last Sep-
tember. Since
then, a 15-mcm-
ber youth com-
mittee has met
each month to
organize the con-
cert.
Mr. Fountas,
19, and other
organizers tett It
was important
for the crusade
to be developed
by young people.
"I find it's better
when you have
youth doing it,
because it's
youth speaking
to youths. It's
not adults doing
it. And, they'll
take in the mes-
sage in a much
better way. We
can relate to
them on a different level."
Each of the three nights will feature
entertainment between 7 and 9 p.m.
The nine groups appearing will
include a combination of local and
professional youth bands, like Selec-
tions, Rise, and Yo -MC. Mr. Fountas
says the diversity of the music —
rock, choir, black gospel, and soloists
— was well received last year.
Innovative mime -type presentations
and guest speakers will break up the
predominantly musical lineup. Each
night, a youth formerly involved in
crime will address the audience to
help explain the alternatives to such an
existence.
Funding for the cost of the bands,
the sound system, and advertising
comes from individual contributions,
area churches, and fund-raising
events. The main sponsor is the Ajax -
Pickering Youth !network, a group
representing local churches which
works to develop youth events.
Mr. Fountas says the religious
aspect of the inter -denominational cru-
sade is what offers young people
hope. A member of a local Baptist
church, Mr. Fountas says an ideal
youth "has something within him
that's really secure. He doesn't have
to look at substitutes and alternatives.
Consciously, unconsciously, they're
searching for that. 1 was, and we all
arc. And, we arc offering them that.
To attract them and draw them, we
have the music part of it --
People of all religious backgrounds
arc invited, he says.
"L,a_st year was great because youth
were responding to this event,- he
says, -1 believe a lot of people came
out because they are searching."
The park is on the west side of
Sandy Beach Road, opposite Kinsmen
Park, in Pickering.
Admission will be free.
