promote Safety on Wheels

increase in motor vehicle traffic,
bicycle safety is a growing concern.
Every year in Canada 12 children
die in bicycle collisions and another
60,000 are injured, but a group of
community partners is
working to increase

The August poster campaign
invites local children to submit their
own bicycle or in-line skate safety
poster in a draw for prizes.
Poster entry forms can be picked
up at Canadian Tire stores in Ajax,
Whitby and Oshawa.
Prizes include bicycles and in-line
skates, and will be presented to the
winners during a Safety on Wheels
event in September.
This event is sponsored, in part,
by the Canadian Tire Child Protec-
tion Foundation.
Safety rodeos and community
forums are also being planned dur-
ing "Safety on Wheels Week" -
Sept. 25 to Oct. 1.

long weekend and you're looking for
something to do.
If you want to get enjoy the out-
doors, try Rotary Park in Ajax on
Lake Driveway West, at Parkes Drive.
There's a children's area with play-
ground equipment and lots of open
space.
In Pickering, you'll find play-
ground equipment at the bottom of
Liverpool Road at the Beachfront
Park.
Pickering Museum Village on the
6th Conc. between Brock Road and
Westney Road will present its histori-
cal exhibits at its usual boars, I 1 a.m.

VEDITORIAL
Trail blazing
There was great fanfare and ceremony when
provincial representatives came to the area in
May to announce the official opening of the Ajax
and Pickering portion of a `new' waterfront trail.
The trail, part of a larger system which will
eventually link Trenton in the east to Hamilton in
the west, is the pet project of former Toronto
mayor David Crombie, who headed up the
Waterfront Regeneration Trust.
However. the hype far outstripped the reality.
The Ajax and Pickering portion isn't yet 'linked'
to neighboring communities and there is a fair
amount of detouring required by trail users if they
are to move on to points east and west.
But that doesn't mean the waterfront trail is a
bust. Pickering and Ajax contain picturesque and
inviting_ segments that are being used reeularl}
Further. they show the promise of what the com-
plete trail system will offer.
And the local portion highlights the beauty of
the waterfront as it winds its way through Ajax
and Pickering,. It is not intrusive, lends itself to
passive use by residents and offers quiet solitude
just rninutes from noisy highways, sprawling con-
crcte subdivisions. busy shopping malls.
And it's ours- Forever.
Ikxa't let the doecision-makers in your rommu-
nitv forget about the promise to develop the trail.
Ikm't let other issues prevent this project from
realizing its potential.

ing basic information on HIV and AIDS will
help businesses develop policies for the work-
place.
The Train the Trainer Workshop is being
hosted by the Durham Region Health Depart-
ment and will aid participants "to go back to
the workplace and plan education sessions in

Region will help kickoff an awareness

The Durham Region Health Depart-
ment will hold the event and will feature
a panel of individuals who will talk
about how HIV and AIDS have affected
their lives. Dr. Linda Panaro, Durham's
associate medical officer of health, will
discuss local HIV and AIDS statistics,
identified risk factors and testing.

Warriors keep on winning
AJAX — The Ajax Warriors tinder -nine competitive soc-
cer team extended its winning streak to nine games with a
pair of victories in Durham Tier 1 Soccer League action.
A 6-1 victory over second -place Oshawa Kicks and a 42
win over Darlington enabled the Warriors to move into fust
place in the league standings.
In the Oshawa contest, the Warriors piled up a 3-0 leW at
half-time. Josh Rogers got Ajax on the board with assists to
Graham Nicholson and Dominic Chapman. Nicholson
scored the second goal, followed by an individual effort by
Mark Hartz for the third marker.
Oshawa scored first in the second half. However, the
Warriors followed this with a goal by Kyle Cunningham on
a set-up from Sheldon D'Souza and Rogers. USOU72 then
scored with Danny Lefort and Nicholson setting up the play.
Nicholson rounded out the scoring, with Danny
Cunningham earning an assL%L

GM reports strong
combined July sales
General Motors of Canada dealers
delivered slightly fewer vehicles last
month compared with the same peri-
od last year.
A total of 32,633 was delivered in
July, 1995 down 1.2 per cent from
33,041 in July 1994.
Passenger car sales were up by 2.1
per cent from last July, to 20,746,
while truck sales declined 6.5 per
cent to 11,987.
Tom Mason, vice president of
marketing for General Motors of
Canada says, -July was a strong
month for GM car sales, with our
sporty and economical new Chevro-
let Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire
leading the way. -
Combined sales of these cars was
up 24 per cent in July compared to
the same time last year.

Mr. Mason says GM also saw
good results in key car segments
including the Oshawa -built Lumina
and Monte Carlo, which showed a 18
per cent increase.
"Our complete line of sport utili-
ties continue to do extremely well in
the marketplace," Mr. Mason says.
He pointed to the Chevy
Tahoe/GMC Yukon full-size sport
utilities, up almost 100 per cent, and
the Chevrolet Blazer/GMC Jimmy
compact sport utilities up over 90 per
cent, as examples.
Other highlights in the month of
July over last year's figures show
sales of the Chevrolet
Corsica/Beretta up 199 per cent.
Oldsmobile Aurora. Buick Riviera up
124 per cent and the Geo Metro/Pon-
tiac Fireflv, up 11.4 per cent.

Residents speak well of Kaitlin Group homes
People consider many factors when
it comes time so purchase a new home.
Some — like location and home design
— are important to most potential
homebuyers. while others — like
landscaping — are pegged by selected
few as the deciding factor before
signing on the dossed line.
The telltale sign of a builder's
success comes from the fact that

them to the builder. One such case is
the Kaitlin Group. Recently, three new
home buyers talked about what
prompted them to choose a Kaitlin
Group hoarse.
And the most popular reason

"We made a wish list of the
things we wanted in a home," says
Angela Sokol, "and the most
important feature we were looking
for was space."
Angela and her husband Jerry
found it at the Kaitlin Group's
Twyn Rivers community in
Pickering.
"We were impressed by the
diversity of the models," Angela
says. "The variety of layouts meant
that we could have as much space
as we were looking for and exactly
the way we wanted it. Plus. Kaitlin
was really good about making any
changes we needed."
The story is pretty much the
same from Jennifer and John
Rodych, who purchased a new
Kaitlin Group home in Uxbridge, at
Barton Farms Estates.
"We felt at home from the
moment we moved in," says John.
"We loved the brightness of the
home and how Kaitlin used to

Uxbridge, says he wanted to buy a new
home in town. The Sokols offered a
slightly different story.
"We bought a new home 10 years
ago and swore we would never buy a
brand new home again," says Angela.
However, when she and her husband
visited Twyn Rivers and its proximity
to the Rouge River valley, Angela says
she changed her mind very quickly.
"The thing that brought us to Twyn
.Rivers in the first place was the
.srraninding area and the fact the site
had mature trees," she explains. "The
whole area is just beautiful."
The Buckles were looking for
convenience and toward the future.
Tracy and Paul were first-time home
buyers, who had been renting in
Markham. At Aspen Springs, Paul has
easy access to commuting routes (Hwy.
401 is just minutes south of the
community) and Tracy liked the fact
that a school was included in the future
plans for Aspen Springs. Plus, they
also felt part of the community right
from the start.
"In Markham, we never really fit
in," Tracy says. "But here, we got to
a hake so many new friends and we felt
comfortable and at home right away."
The Kaitlin Group is also well
known for the friendliness of its sales
staff and its after-sales service. Tracy
Buckle says the Aspen Springs sales
staff was especially helpful for them as
first-time buyers. The Sokols and the
Rodychs echoed the fact that any
requests for repairs we immediately
looked after.
"The home is great and there have
been no real problems," says John.
-"But when we reported something that

possible."
What the Sokols, who said they

"My husband says I better not even
think about buying another home,"
says Angela. "And I am certainly
happy with our new home, but I would
be interested in seeing where the

New home buyers who have
agreed to purchase a brand new
home or condominium unit and
are anxiously awaiting move -in
day, may be justifiably uneasy
when they hear there are strikes
in the construction industry.
Recently, the Ontario New
Home Warranty Program
(ONHWP) has received calls from new home buyers
and builders who are looking for information about
the strike by framing carpenters, concrete and drain
workers and bad formers that started June 26 in
the Greater Toronto area and how it will affect their
warranty coverage. The most commonly asked
questions include:
How will the strike affect the closing date of my new
home or the occupancy dale of my condominium?
Some homes may not be affected by the strike. For
example, if the majority of the construction wort was
completed by June 26 and your home only required
finishing touches, there is a good chance the closing
date for your new home or occupancy date for your
condominium unit will not change. However, if other
trades become involved, the construction of any home
might be affected.
If construction on your new home was not
completed before June 26, you will have to be patient
with the builder since it will be difficult to estimate
how long a delay might be caused by the strike. In
almost all cases, the delay will be greater than the
actual length of the strike, depending on the stage of
construction.
Builders will have to wait until the strike ends and
an agreement is ratified between the builders and the
trades before they can re -schedule construction and
issue new closing and occupancy dates where they
are necessary. Each home will be affected differently.
During the strike, builders should be monitoring
the events and keeping their home buyers informed.
How can the strike affect my warranty coverage?
Warranty coverage on your home begins when you
take possession. The Addendum to the Agreement of
Purchase and Sale which applies to freehold homes
does not exempt strikes and therefore does not release
builders from their responsibility to construct a home
by a certain date of the purchaser will have the ability
to walk away from the deal.
If the closing day of a freehold home is delayed for
more than 120 days from the original closing date,
purchasers who have not specifically agreed
otherwise, have a 10 -day window (between the 120 -
and 130 -day period) to end the agreement and ask for

This provision is only relevant if
the deal does not close.
If the home is completed and
the homeowner takes possession,
there is warranty coverage for
additional living expenses.
However, there is no
compensation for delays caused
by the events beyond the builder's control — such as
strikes, civil insurrection, floods -or Acts of God. If
the delay is caused solely by the strike, there will be
no claim or compensation for the delay and the
expenses incurred. -
If the home has been subject to additional delays
that are separate from the strike's impact, a delayed
closing or occupancy claim may be made. Warranty
claims are considered only if the sale closes. The
period of delay caused by a strike is exempted from
warranty claims and each block of time will be
assessed by ONHWP on a house -by -house basis. An
assessment cannot be made now since we do not
know how long the strike or strikes last.
Home buyers should remember to keep their
receipts for expenses and complete the claim forms
that are available through their builder.
Ironically, both the builders and home buyers are
caught in the middle of the strike and must bear the
consequences of this halt or delay in coostroctioa
ONHWP is urging builders to maintain open and
honest communication with home buyers. Strike
conditions are stressful for both home buyers and
builders. Keeping close unication can prevent
misunderstandings.
ONHWP is also advising new home buyers who
have a closing date looming in the next few months
and have not heard from their builder, to call and
clarify if the completion date is affected.
The builder's warranty on delayed closing regaires
written notice periods and new dates to be set. In the
case of strikes, there are many situations where the
notice periods obviously can't be met. At this time,
no firm completion dates can be made.
