VALERIE PLGRW JOHN MONIZ' THE NEWS Ajax woman's Solomon Islands trek `phenomenal' But experience of South Pacific project tainted by theft at home By STEPHEN LATEGAN STAFF R1..POPMR AJAX — Paula Ritchie had her passport and five rolls of film stolen at a `welcome home' party in her honor. But, no, the Ajax woman did- n't turn around and catch the next plane to the Solomon Islands, where she'd just spent 10 weeks on a global develop- ment project. "1 had no expectations," says Ms. Ritchie. "I was just going for the expe- rience: ' Her tenure in the South Pacific was "a phenomenal experience. "I think I learned as much as I taught, maybe more," says the 19 -year-old McMaster Universi- ty student. From April 27 to July 11. Ms. Ritchie took part in a project organized by Youth Challenge, a non-governmental, non -religious organization devoted to global youth development. As one of 400 applicants from across Canada, she was selected to sake part in the group's project in the South Pacific based on her per- formance in poten- tially stressful mock scenarios. It was also her job to raise 53,750. which she collect- ed from various sponsors and fund- raising activities. The selected munity initiated projects in the islands. tier work included con- structing toilets for the disabled population in a country where many people use `I think I learned as much as I mOre... Paula `:Ritchie "challengers" included 20 young people from Canada, 22 from Australia, and a few local islanders who were spread out across the Solomon Islands. In her group of 13 challengers and four staff. Ms. Ritchie assisted with sustainable com- ■EE .. saki t Newt A IJ ISI the beach as a bathroom. Those who benefited from her efforts included victims of polio,tubercu- losis and strokes. She also taught natives about AIDS and malar- ia for two weeks, which required her to learn and speak Pidgin, the national language of the islands. The country cur- rently provides no AIDS education as the dis- ease is new to its population. Malaria. however, is so common to the area that the islands have the highest incidence of the ill- ness in the world. As a reward for her efforts, Ms. Ritchie herself picked up n U the disease, which required three days of treatment. Her teaching was followed by a stint assisting a dentist from Vancouver with emergency den- tal work and providing oral hygiene education. She undertook the construction of a kindergarten school with the help of a Solomon Islands youth group. As the country's education system can't deal with its popu- lation, only 25 per cent of the people move on to high school. As the bio -psychology major prepares to volunteer at the McMaster University hospital next month as part of her com- mitment, Ms. Ritchie says the experience in the South Pacific has changed her outlook on Canadian life as well as that of the Third World. "I'm more interested in women's issues than I ever was because (in the Solomon Islands) it's a male dominated society.- She ociety "She is also more aware of environmental issues and mate- rialism. Ms. Ritchie got a rude reminder of the ugly side of people's materialistic pursuits upon her return to Ajax July 14 when her backpack was stolen after her `welcome home' party. The backpack, taken when someone broke into her friend's house in south Ajax, contained five rolls of film with all of the undeveloped shots of her trip, her passport and other valuable items. The loss of the photos means she will be unable to make presentations to her spon- sors. "(lt's) interesting that I man- aged to make it all the way across the world and back and nothing got stolen," she says. "A couple of days bock in Ajax, and my memories were taken.- Ms. aken"Ms. Ritchie hopes whoever took her backpack will return the film, which contains the only record of her 10 -week experi- ence. That would restore her faith in the humanity of the people who populate civilized Canada. NINO N G -ROUP INDEPENDENT MEMBER BROKER HERITAGE REALTY LTD. Safety on Wheels, Durham Region, hopes to raise aware- ness of the need to wear a hel- met when riding a bike or skat- ing and to reduce the number of people injured. Every year in Canada more than 30 children die in bicycle collisions and another 60,000 hurt. "Too many lives are lost or disrupted because of unsafe bicycling and in-line skating," says Ajax pediatrician Dr. Valerie Lewis, a member of the the region's Safety on Wheels campaign. The poster campaign begins Aug. 1 and children can submit entries in a draw for a prize. There is one category for chil- dren aged nine and under and another category for youths 10 to 15 years. Entry forms can be picked up at a Canadian Tire store in Pick- ering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa or Clarington next month. Prizes include bicycles and in-line skates and will be pre- sented at a Safety on Wheels Week event in September. On Oct. 1, a new law requir- ing people to wear a helmet when riding a bike takes effect in Ontario. All councils from Pickering to Clarington have declared Sept. 25 to Oct. 1 Safety on Wheels Week. The poster contest is spon- sored, in part, by the Canadian Tire Child Protection Founda- tion. TINA ..:._ fifes! Senior cyclist starts fund-raising trip in Markham AJAX-PICKERING — There has been a slight change in the plans of octogenarian cyclist Allan Jackson. Not to worry if you plan to pledge your support for the 81-year-old's 200 -kilometre bike ride to raise funds for the Ajax -Pickering hospital. He still plans to carry on with his bold 11 -hour journey, and on the same day, but the location has changed.
