And, the family who originally
proposed the school is threatening to

Council earlier this week approved
a temporary use zoning application to
allow operation of a Montessori
school for three years on the old

The school is expected to be open
by Septembet. Its operators will lease

with opposition from Riccardo Leo-

Riccardo Leofanti said following the

It wasn't a popular decision Ajax council made
Monday. But, it was the proper one.
Town politicians endorsed a recommendation
from the parks and recreation department b begin to
charge senior citizens and community groups for use
of teaeation facilities.
As Ward 4 councillor Pat Brown understated in
supporting the policy change, "It might not be politii-
cally popular.-
No,
opular "No, but it is economically setuibie as it will shift
some of the burden of paying for recreation cent+es
from taxpayers who don't use them to people who do.
There are currently 235 seniors who have annual
memberships that allow them free use of pools,
squash and weight rooms at the Ajax Community
Centre and the Mclean Community Centre. Younger
adults pay S__3W a year.
We're not suggesting the elderly should be
charged the same as everybody else. And, they'll
continue to get a break as the fee they'll pay will be
$180 annually, phased in over three years.
In those three years, as the population continues to
age, the ranks of senior citizens living in Ajax will
swell, especially as mono and more elderly people
move here from Toronto. It isn't fair to expect long-
time Ajax property owners who fund recreation cen-
tres to cover the increased cost of maintenance acsoci-
a k d with increased use of the facilities by newcomers
to town. The users should pay.
k can also be argued that senior citizens who arc
able to swim, play squash and lift weights are senior
cidwits who aren't ws infum as some of their peers
and therefore aren't as cash-strapped by medical bills.
They can afford to pay a little bit for recreation that
could extend their lives a lot

Ideas sought for
Frenchman's
Festivals
in
PICKERING — This year's
Frenchman's Bay Festival drew high
praise from many of the estimated
5,000 people in attendance.
But, festival organizers are already
looking for new ideas for next year's
event.
The first-ever visitors' survey taken
during the festival June 10 and 11
gave it an average rating of 83 out of
10.
Despite the threat of inclement
weather, people came from near and
far to enjoy Pickering's waterfront, a
variety of games, activities and
demonstrations, says festival co-chair-
man Eileen Higdon.
The organizing committee was
assisted this year by Durham Region-
al Police. the Town of Pickering, the
Pickering Town Centre and about 40
volunteers. As thanks for the Town
Centre's sponsorship of the festival,
the mall was presented a limited edi-
tion print by local artist Barrie
Smylie.
Ms. Higdon says the organizing
committee is always looking for new
members and ideas for future festi-
vals.
People interested in serving on the
committee and individuals with ideas
for future festivals should call Ms.
Higdon at 839-5229 or co-chairman
Sherry Senis at 831-6000.
Call 683-5110 if you have a news
story about Pickering.

Planning a new store or renovation?
You've got to call Jondy Retail Interiors Inc.
Designer John Newell uses both traditional
and high tech methods when designing a
retail store that will catch people's atten-
tion.
Have you ever wondered why you stopped to
check out a particular store at the mall? What
made you go inside''
i'ou•ye probably always taken for granted
the work that goes into a store concept and the
I(Iok that caught your eye.
You could probably call it a creative science
because thought is put into even• detail from the
store decor to where the cash register is placed
It's a carefully thought out plan of action
and any successful businesses from coast to coast
have taken the time and money to ensure that
v hat the customer sees and how he or she moves
through their store is not something done blind -

r,< ss a success After working for `ra rs in the
t•arly :0's designing and planning stores com-
bined with having his own business since 1987,
-John knows what works and what doesn't.
In .John's consulting experience he has
determined that many retail businesses fail for
One basic reason: a failure to establish the correct
relationship between the amount of equity to be
invested. the money to he borrowed and the real
crash flow that the new or renovated store will
enerate. The new design must properly reflect
this relationship if the venture is to succeed.
John's preliminary consultation guides rook
ie and some seasoned retailers so that as the con
cept is developed, a sense of the future success o
the venture becomes apparent.
The concept is developed with input frorr
the client, often on-site, using the latest technolo
fry (and even traditional technology) to producE
accurate base building drawings so that the con•
cepts reflect the real space.
After a concept has been agreed upon, pre-
liminary working drawings are developed which
are used for budgeting purposes.
The completed layout and the budget then
become part of the package which the retailer
can then take to the bank. A package like this
serves three purposes. The first is that virtually
all of the questions. ncluding feasibility, that
must be answered are answered during Jondy's
development of your project. Secondly, the bank
will be far more likely to lend the money you
need because vou've done your homework. Third,
but not least, Jondv Retail Interiors clients
always start off with the confidence of knowing
that they have a sound basis from which to
launch their new store or renovation.
Jondy's services include concept design, full
sets of working drawings including scope of work
as, well as in-house plotting and blueprinting, fin-
ishes sample boards, renderings, models, store
future design. storefronts and signage
When the design work Is done, John helps
his clients choose the appropriate contractors to
complete the work The contractors must be
retail specialists with a reputation for quality,
honesty and fair pricing.
John knuws how important it is for a store
to be unique and stand apart from others to catch
peoples attention.
'You have to co-ordinate the environment
with colour, lighting and in some cases, move-
ment and smell,- he says. -You want a retail
environment that makes the customer say
this is my kind of store.-
Jondv Retail Interiors Inc. can also look
after your retail photography needs with a full
line colour lab fully equipped to handle your spe-
cific need.. The finished work is -spectacular'-
John also designs Trade Show booths for
commercial and industrial customers with the
same attention to detail that draws customers
year after year.
Jondv Retail Interiors Inc. charges a mini-
mum fee per project, but you can call John for a
free initial consultation to determine the viability
of your project.
You must realize that this is an important
and vital investment in vour future success for
many years to come and it can't happen without
sound planning

Why Advertise In Focus on Business?
Durham businesses wanting to increase their profile and sales volume find that being a ort of the Focus on Business
advertising feature_ definitely has Its advantage.
