PICKERING — Pickering Hydro would support pri-
vatization of Ontario H`dro if it meant lower rates I -or
customers.
But. Pickering Hydro general manager John Wicrs-
ma is hesitant to pledge his full support for the provin-
cial government's proposal at this stage.

can be higher or lower in certain regions of the
country, there am also examples where prices can
range between five and 10 cents a litre within a par-

He's also critical of increases on holiday week-
ends and following gas price wars.
W. McTeague, who drives to and from Otmwa,
refuses to fig his tank in Durham, choosing instead
to "buy it on the highway" because it's routinely
cheaper-
Ik says he's received "no fewer than 100 calls"

The bill wouldn't regulate gas prices or infringe
on the rights of oil companies and retail gasoline

gal price fixing.
"I think there's little evidence of a free market"
when prices are the same at all gas stations within
the same vicinity, insists Mr. McTeague. "If the
petroleum industry is going to act like a monopoly,
then it should be created as a monopoly."

A private -sector consortium was to
be found to build the road, which would
be open fnmt Hwy. 48 to Courtioe Road
in Clarintgton by 2001.
The eutine length of the 407 — from
Claringion to Mississauga — will be an
electronically -tolled road, with users
charged for the distance they travel.
The new provincial government is
"not sure the toll road will pay for
itself," Mr. Harema reports.
Hwy. 407 is "critical" to any future
airport in Pickering. Mr_ Herema con-
tends. ' there won't be an airport with-
out the 407. It would be totally impressi-
ble"
Mr. lderema is an advocate of a
Pickering airport hamuse it would boost
the local economy.
If the 407 is. delayed. Durham will

ing of Taunton Rao to four lanes from

women and children.

after $80,000 blaze

PICKERING — A Pickering family is look-
ing for a place to stay after a Tuesday fire
caused extensive damage to their Forestview
Drive home.
Five neighbors who saw smoke when the
blaze erupted just before 7:30 p.m. were able to
put out the inferno before firefighters arrived on
the scene moments later. Armed with fire extin-
guishers, the neighbors broke through a window
and proceeded upstairs to a linen closet where
the blaze originated.
As they pulled into their subdivision around
8:30 p.m. after a two-hour outing, Kanti and
Jashoda Patel were welcomed by fire engines
and smoke. Initially believing a neighbor's
home was ablaze, they discovered that their own
house had been burned.
"We put all kinds of things in the linen clos-
et," says Mr. Patel, who's unable to speculate on

the cause of the blaze. "It could have been any-
thing." Matches and incense were among the
items stowed away in the closet.
Pickering Fire Department inspectors can't
pinpoint the cause of the blaze but they "don't
expect anything suspicious," reports acting
deputy chief Charles Smith.
He says the home can be salvaged after a
clean-up that's expected to take six to eight
weeks and include the removal of all doors and
windows.
Although the family was able to sleep in their
basement that night, Mr. Patel is looking for a
furnished apartment until the extensive cleanup
has been completed.
He says that, after the cleanup, he, his wife
and their two children will move back into their
home of eight years. "There's nothing wrong
with it."
Neighbors were able to contain the fire to the
closet. but 580.000 in smoke damage was
caused to the four upstairs bedrooms, the furni-
ture, three TVs, a computer and clothes in those
rooms. The Patels' property is insured.
At the time of the blaze, their children were
away at the movies with two guests who are
staying with the family.

sertted at this month's Grassroots Festi-
val.

Museum Village, international perform-

this year's event.
'We sent out flyers in our
statements and faxes to our
customers as well as
advertising in the newspaper,"
he says. "Its going to be a fun
time for the whole family."
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at
their location at 759 Kingston
Rd. W. in Ajax, there will be
clowns, balloons, face painting
for the children as well as free
hot dogs, pop, coffee and
popcorn.
'There will also be plenty
of prizes," says Maurice.
"Including Blue Jays tickets
and various services at our
shop like a free tire rotation
and balance, free oil changes,
interior shampoos and much
more.
This year they are
dedicating the party to Daniel
Burton.
The nine-year-old boy is
sufrering from Leukemia and
is in urgent need of a bone
marrow transplant-

$1.00 for Daniel to provide
funds for immediate testing of
potential donors and to
increase the size of the
Canadian Unrelated Bone
Marrow Donor Registry to
benefit all Canadians.

named after Maurice's wife

Ironically, both the builders and home buyers are
caught in the middle of the strike and must bear the
consequences of this halt or delay in construction.
ONHWP is urging builders to maintain open and
honest communication with home buyers. Strike
conditions are stressful for both home buyers and
builders. Keeping close communication can prevent
misunderstandings.
ONHWP is also advising new home buyers who
have a closing date looming in the next few months
and have not heard from their builder, to call and
clarify if the completion date is affected.
The builder's warranty on delayed closing requires
written notice periods and new dates to be set. In the
case of strikes, there are many situations where the
notice periods obviously can't be met. At this time,
no firm completion dates can be made.

New home buyers who have
agreed to purchase a brand new
home or condominium unit and
are anxiously awaiting move -in
day, may be justifiably uneasy
when they hear there are strikes
in the construction industry.
Recently, the Ontario New
Home Warranty Program
(ONHWP) has received calls from new home buyers
and builders who are looking for information about
the strike by framing carpenters, concrete and drain
workers and basement formers that started June 26 in
the Greater Toronto area and how it will affect their
warranty coverage. The most commonly asked
questions include:
How will the strike affect the closing date of my new
home or the occupancy date of my condominium?
Some homes may not be affected by the strike. For
example, if the majority of the construction work was
completed by June 26 and your home only required
finishing touches, there is a good chance the closing
date for your new hone or occupancy date for your
condominium unit will not change. However, if other
trades become involved. the construction of any home
might be affected.
If construction on your new, home was not
completed before June 26, you will have to be patient
with the builder since it will be difficult to estimate
how- long a delay might be caused by the strike. In
almost all cases. the delay will be greater than the
actual length of the strike, depending on the stage of
construction.
Builders will have to wait until the strike ends and
an agreement is ratified between the builders and the
trades before they can re -schedule construction and
issue new closing and occupancy dates where they
are necessarv. Each home will be affected differently.
Durmg the strike, builders should be monitoring
the events and keeping their home buyers informed.
How can the strike affect my warranty coverage''
Nk'arranty coverage on your home begins when you
take possession. The Addendum to the Agreement of
Purchase and Sale which applies to freehold homes
does na exempt strikes and therefore does not release
builders from their responsibility to construct a home
by a certain date of the purchaser will have the ability
to walk away from the deal.
If the closing day of a freehold home is delaved for
more than 120 days from the original closing date,
purchasers who have not specifiLally agreed
otherwise, have a 10 -day window (between the 120 -
and 130 -day period) to end the agreement and ask for

If the home is completed and
the homeowner takes possession,
there is warranty coverage for
additional living expenses.
However, there is no
compensation for delays caused
by the events beyond the builder's control — such as
strikes, civil insurrection, floods -or Acts of God. If
the delay is caused solely by the strike, there will be
no claim or compensation for the delay and the
expenses incurred.
If the home has been subject to additional delays
that are separate from the strike's impact, a delayed
closing or occupancy claim may be made. Warranty
claims are considered only if the sale closes. The
period of delay caused by a strike is exempted from
warranty claims and each block of time will be
assessed by ONHWP on a house -by -house basis. An
assessment cannot be made now since we do not
know how long the strike or strikes last.
Home buyers should remember to keep their
receipts for expenses and complete the claim forms

school, you likely fund that your kitchen

It is important to realize that a
home study doesn't have to be
elaborate or large to be functional or
effective. For instance. you may want
to turn an existing room of your
home — like a small spare hedroom
or a private corner in the family room
— into a studv area. Or. if you have
an awkward .catchall" room that
never sets much ime. you can make it
into a suitable home study with just a
few modifications.
You may even want to consider
renovating your attic, if it is large
enough, to provide a cosy quiet stud%
nook. Today. more and more people
are renovating their attics and
basements to expand their living
space. However. keep in mind that an
undertaking like this would be more
costly and would probably require a
contractor as well as a building

by building on an addition, you'll
need a contractor, detailed plans of
what you intend to build and a
building permit.
When planning your home study,
be sure to keep your children
involved in the process right from the
very beginning. After all, they will
have primary use of this room.
Consult them about the types of
furniture and equipment they think
they'll require. If you plan to use it as
well. you'll have to blend your tastes
and creeds with theirs.
Depending on the location of the
study, you may want to install thick
carpeting in any rooms above or
around it to muffle anv distracting
sounds — such as televisions and
conversations. You may even want to
install special sound -deadening
panels or acoustical file in your study
if you have a particular noisy
household.
When considering the types of
furniture you are going to install,
keep simplicity in mind. For instance,
instead of trying to cram one or two
bulky desks in your : tudy, you may
simply want to install a very large,
functional work table. Portable
drawer units could be placed
underneath the table for easy access
to files, pens and other necessary
items.
Another alternative is to buy small,
two -drawer, inexpensive filing cabinets
and place them under or beside the table
or desk for extra storage.
Open storage cans are another option
for keeping things neat and out of the
way. These movable, plastic -coated wine
units usually contain throe or four storage
bins and can be placed either beside or
under the desk or table. They are
relatively inexpensive and can be
purchased at most hardware, department
or shelving stores.
Also keep in mind that desk chairs in
a study should be sturdy but comfortable
to encourage good posture. Other
furniture items should be both durable
and flexible so that they can continue to

be functional as your children grow.
Bookshelves are also handy items to
install in your home study, particularly if
you have a lot or reference materials —
like encyclopedias — which you and
your children use on a regular basis.
Inexpensive bookshelves can be
purchased at furniture stones or building
centres. Most are pre -finished and all
that's required is a little elbow grease to
assemble them. For an interesting effect,
try combining bookshelves of varying
heights. This can make the room appear
somewhat larger.
If you are handy, you might want to
build the furniture yourself, thus tailoring
it specifically to suit your needs. Built-in
bookcases and desks are attractive and

make effective use of available space.
Lighting is another important
consideration. There should be lots of
adequate lighting over and around the
work area to minimize eye strain. You
could install ceiling lights as well as

computer which you or your children
use. There should be adequate outlets for
lights as well as a grounded one for the
computer. If you have inadequate wiring
