Ajax fire chief Tony Mmtoff says a track driver "inadvertently dumped- altmtinum sul- fate into a 30U -gallon tank containing sodium hypochloride, creating chlorine gas. This summer, the 34 -year- old will make her third attempt at a triple crossing of Lake Ontario after previous success at a double crossing and five single crossings. As with all her other swim- ming exploits, she'll be raising funds in support of Variety Vil- lage in Scarborough. Her goal is to collect $100,000 for each crossing of the lake, for a total of $300.000 toward the facility for disabled children. Ms. Keith Munro says she'll begin the marathon swim any- , c between July 15 and the nd of next month, with good ather being the determining factor. She'll start the first leg of her crossing at Niagara -on - the -Lake and swim to Toronto- She'll oronto_She'II try to make the second crossing from Toronto to St. Catharines, with the third leg of the swim from St. Kitts to the finish back in Toronto. She's confident this attempt at a triple crossing will be suc- cessful. Her first try in 1990 was particularly notable as she was forced to abandon the marathon swim due to pollu- tion in the lake. "I ended up swimming into raw sewage." she recalled in an interview with the News Advertiser at the McLean Community Centre pool Thursday morning. Beaches in Durham have been ;given a dean bill of health dW the first two water quality tests of the summer season, according to Tony Wong, supervisor of environmental health with the Durham Region Health Department. Samples were taken bum a number of different locations in Lake Onam Lake Simcoe and Lake Scu- gog as well as a private swimming location in Uxbridge. Tests at Frendiman's Bay in Pick- ering, Rotary Parr in Ajax, Whitby Beach, Lakeview Beach in Osbawa. Port Darlington Beach and Newcastle Beach in Clarington showed the water's fine. Also found to be clean were Pleasure Valley and Elgin Pond in Uxbridge, Beaverton Beach, Fair Glen Camp, and Thorah Centennial Park on Lake Simcoe. Lake Scugog beaches in Pon Perry and on Scugog Island are also OK_ The tests measure fecal cohlbrm in the water. These counts usually rise in extremely warm weather and, if they rise enough to be a danger to humans. affected beaches are closed. Several beaches were closed last year at various times, recalls Mr. Wong. A minimum of five samples were taken per beach, Mr. Wong says, not- ing the beaches are tested every week through the summer months. But, at their Friday meeting, the mayors couldn't decide bow much power to give to the co- mayors'The notes the co-ordinating authority should have a staff of five and an annual budget of just over S",000. "This is another level of government," Markham mayor Don Cousens said, but then added "1 think there is a need to have a body. Burlington mayor Walter Mulkewich said, "Whether it is or isn't another level of government. the perception is there that it is." Whitby mayor Tom Edwards said establishing a co-ordinating authority gives the GTA mayors' committee a structure to operate under. "We can't carry on any longer the way we have. Three London men, referred to as the Balaclava Gang, are being tried in St. Thomas for an awned robbery of a Nation- al Grocers outlet. On Thursday, Ronald James Woodcock, 43, pleaded guilty to five charges in the hold-up during which the store manager was shot. Mr. Woodcock, Roshan Norouzali and Deryck Thompson had been under police surveillance since December as possible suspects in a number of London armed robberies. During the trial, the homicide unit of Durham Regional Police has been investi- gating the gang's possible tie to the mur- ders of Pickering's Ken Thomas and Gagnon Sports co-owner Roger Pardy. Construction of the facility was divided into two stages to reduce the capital costs and to allow time to reassess the need for a building: Stage l will hold about three years' worth of used fuel: Stage II will provide storage space for a further 7 years. With the completion of Stage 1. Ontario Hydro is examining the option of outdoor storage of Dry Storage Containers for Stage II of the Dry Storage Facility, in a secure area beside the Stage I storage building. Storing DSCs outdoors offers significant cost savings for Ontario Hydro and its customers because it eliminates the need to construct a storage building. In order to obtain an operating license for outdoor storage of Dry Storage Containers, Ontario Hydro must satisfy the AECB that there are no unacceptable environmental effects and no public concerns. We are presently conducting a public communications program to explain the outdoor storage option and gather feedback. In order to fit the lifestyle of modern families, pick -your - own farms are becoming very innovative in designing ways to attract their clientele. What might be described by farmers as 'chores' — like harvesting the crop — have become fun activities to enjoy on a sonny sum- mer's day. Often, special activities such as wagon rides and strawberry socials make the outing a real family affair. And to satisfy busy, two - income families who don't have the time to do it them- selves, many farms are set- ting up markets to sell ready -picked crops, and other fruits of their labor, like pies and tarts, muffins and jams. This is the sixth year Colleen and Walter Pingle have offered strawberries at their pick -your -own farm on thriving pick -your -own farm, roadside market and green- house business. In addition to pick -your -own strawberries, they offer rasp- berries and a variety of home- grown vegetables including corn, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbem squash and pump- kins, in large or small quanti- ties.
