Man told cops `Shoot me'
before peaceful surrender
By BLAKE PURDV
NEWS EDITOR
AJAX — A tense stand -oft between heavi-
ly -armed cops and an Ajax man who told
officers to "shoot me" ended peacefully Fri-
day night when he was talked out of his high-
rise apartment by a police negotiator.
The resident of 66 Falby Ct. surrendered at
7:21_ p.m., three -and -a -half hours after a 4:51
p.m. call to 9-1-1 in which he threatened to
commit suicide with a knife.
When four Durham Regional Police offi-
cers originally responding to the call arrived
at the building at 4:56, the 49 -year-old plead-
ed with them to "Shoot me, shoot me."
reports Staff Sergeant Ken Gardiner. "He
kept approaching the officers in a confronta-
tional manner."
At that point, they backed off and called in
the Tactical Support Unit as a police negotia-
tor began talking with the man over the tele-
phone.
Sergeant Sal Naccarato stayed on the
phone with the distraught man throughout the
ordeal. "He did an excellent job, a remark-
able job, talking to the person, calming him
down and getting him to come out without
incident," reports Staff Sgt. Gardiner.
He was taken into custody without incident
after leaving the apartment unarmed.
His 95 -year-old grandmother fled the unit
they shared sometime between the call to 9-
1-1 and the arrival of police.
Officers evacuated apartment units next
door and across the hall and blocked access
to the fifth floor.
At press time around 8:45 p.m. Friday,
police hadn't decided if the man would be
charged nor had they determined if he'd be
sent for psychiatric evaluation.

18th birthday
0 `Difficult time' for loved ones
of teen, five pals missing
on Lake Ontario since March
By LINDA WHITE
STAFF REPORTER
DURHAM — They're not sure whether they'll
remember their missing pal with a birthday cake,
but friends of six teens who disappeared on Lake
Ontario in March "do know it will be a difficult
day.
Instead of wondering what hap-
pened to their longtime friends,
they'd rather spend Tuesday celebrat-
ing Michael Cummins' 18th birthday
with him, says Jude Lightbown.
The Oshawa teen hasn't been seen
since March 17, when he left a
friend's place with plans to head
down to the beach at Frenchman's
Bay in Pickering along with Chad
Smith, 18, and Robbie Rumholt, 17,
of Pickering, Danny Higgins, 16, of
Ajax, and Jamie Lefebvre, 17, of
Scarborough and formerly of Ajax.
It's believed the teens took a 14 -
foot imitation Boston Whaler boat
and water bicycle for a joy ride that
night.
A five -gallon gas tank belonging to
the boat was found floating upside
down two weeks later at the water's
edge near Wilson, New York. Police
divers later found a beer bottle —

Loved ones ` ready for the worst'
FROM PAGE 1 Ms. Lightbown is now considering setting up a memori-
which they believe the boys stole from a boat — near one al to the teens at Frenchman's Bay. "It's a tragedy that six
of two channel markers a the mouth of Frenchman's Bay. teens went missing on a childish prank."
'Though police have long concluded the teens are dead,
it's difficult for most parents to accept the probable fate of
their sons, reports Ms. Lighthown, whose daughters are
friends of the missing teens.
"Parents can't accept them disappearing into the night
and never being seen again, though that might be the sce-
nario," explains Ms. Lightbown, who has organized
numerous searches for clues into the disappearance of the
boys.
She maintains "we are all prepared, all ready for the
worst"
Still, last month's discovery of a
man's body beneath the Scarborough
Bluffs — later identified as that of
Ajax resident Ajaz Reham — was a
"tough time" for family and friends.
'Ibough it would have allowed par-
ents to get on with their lives —
instead of holding out hope — if it
was one of the missing teens, "we all
breathed a sigh of relief that it wasn't
one of our boys," says Ms. Light -
town.
She's urging boaters and people
walking on the shores of Lake
Ontario to keep their eyes open for
clues into the disappearance of the
teens. If you find anything, you're
asked to contact police.

fying her as a "dyke". She says a
teacher has even laughed along with
students who have ridiculed her during
her absence.
While she's "not impressed" with the
rumors, Daisy finds solace at the sup-
port group. "It's a lot easier to cope
when you can talk to people who've
been through the same kind of thing,"
the 17 -year-old admits.
"You can talk to your friends at
school, but they don't understand the
things you're going through, like the
problems you're facing at home."
Group founder and co -facilitator
Tanya Gulliver concurs. "There isn't
another place where they can totally be
themselves. Even with their straight
friends, there's a barrier because their
friends are never really going to under-
stand."
Though this isn't the first support
group of its kind established in Durham,
Ms. Gulliver is certain it won't fall vic-
tim to lack of interest.
Since announcing her bisexuality two
years ago as a former public school
board trustee, the Whitby resident has
received dozens of phone calls from
teens looking for someone to talk to.
"I can see what it's done for a lot of
kids and the value they place on them-
selves," she says of the support group.
•'Ibey're much more comfortable with
themselves. Many felt isolated and
thought they were the only one experi-
encing those feelings."
But in a support group, "all of a sud-
den they're OK It boosts how you feel
about yourself. When you know other
people care, you know you can care
about yourself."
Members of the support group also
get together for social events. Ms. Gul-
liver believes that's important because it
keeps them out of the bars, "one of the

"the gay and lesbian population has
enough problems with alcohol because
they're trying to hide. It's a way of
dealing with being gay because society
says they shouldn't be."
Sadly, the pressures are sometimes
too great for gay and lesbian teens. Ms.
Gulliver points to recent statistics which
conclude the suicide rate is three times

The rust -colored water has "no effect on the

Tor Tor ioryy, y
Five years later, the choice is clear.
The Progressive Conservatives are best suited to
form the next Ontario government. Under the direction
of Mike Harris, Ontario Tories have come up with a
blueprint to most effectively guide the province into a
new century.
To borrow a populist catch phrase of recent weeks:
It's common sense. For a change.
Consider this: Under five years of New Democrat
rule, Ontario's deficit ballooned to unprecedented pro-
portions, welfare became a trough for too many to feed
at, jobs disappeared at a hectic pace and taxes were
raised dozens of times. With the Progressive
Conservatives, Ontarians will see income tax rates cut,
the introduction of workfare for welfare, repeal of eco-
nomically stifling labor legislation, job creation policies
and removal of barriers to business growth.
But it's more than policies contained in a handbook.
With Mr. Harris, Ontarians are given a clear blueprint
for change, not the hither and yon pledges of Lyn
McLeod's Liberals, nor the pink socialist jackboot of
the New Democrats. Mr. Harris is committed to change,
to reaffirming Ontario's economic place in
Confederation, and to pledging more leadership with
Less government. The New Democrats have illustrated,
on too many occasions in the last five years, their lack of
vision and depth. So too do they leave the province in
poor fiscal health, and its citizens both disaffected and
cynical of government.
Ontario needs a government that can restore a sense
of optimism in its citizens, create a healthier business
climate and do away with waste.
The Progressive Conservatives are offering
Ontarians an opportunity to reclaim its greatness, to
build a new society for a new century.
Now that's common sense. For a change.

V LOOSE WHEELS
Disc vibration `inherent' in wheels
To the editor:
After reading an article about
engineers calling for tougher
truck checks, 1 know for certain
the wheel nuts inside and out are
not being tightened to manufac-
turer's specifications.
Sixty years ago the "Ten
Stud" Budd steel -disc wheel nuts
had to be tightened to 360 -foot
pounds on vehicles in the motor -
coach industry. That is, the front -
wheel nuts, and the inside and
outside wheel nuts on the rear
wheels had to conform to this
standard.
The 360 -foot-pound standard
was required to completely damp
out at the disc vibration which is
inherent in any wheel.
On dual -wheel assemblies, not
attaining this standard allowed
vibration to get to the wheel nuts
inside and out and it would
loosen the most loose nut first.
The first indication was rust
streaking from the outside nut
which showed me all the nuts
inside and out on that on that
wheel assembly were loose and
required tightening. The next
stage was more than one rust -
streaked nut.
After three nuts or more
showed rust and were not cor-
rected by tightening the whole
assembly, the next stage was one
broken stud.
To check if the stud is broken
all you have to do is touch it with
your fingers and if it shakes the
answer is yes.
After the first stud breaks, the
stud next to it breaks (not imme-
diately, but perhaps thousands of
kilometres later), this is indica-
tive of nobody checking their
wheel nuts.
If it's still not corrected, this
process continues until five studs
have broken in a half circle.
Soon after, the wheel will fall
off because the remaining five
studs break suddenly, completely
and all together.
When the wheel finally falls
off, the first five broken studs
have an incriminating concentra-
tion of rust on the broken sur-
faces and is easily compared to
the five freshly broken studs.
The tighter the wheels, (up to
the 360 standard) the farther the
wheels would travel before all of
the above happened.
For thicker wheels used today
for heavier loads the tightened
standard is probably more than
360 -foot pounds.

By LINDA WHITE
STAFF REPORTER
DURHAM — High school teach-
ers are pointing the finger at the New
Democratic Partys Social Contract as
44 teaching positions have been made
redundant at the public board.
But many of those teachers will be
back in the classroom in September
because of anticipated retirements,
leaves of absence and increased
enrolment,
reports Pat Jer-
mey, president
of the union rep-
resenting 1,450
secondary teach-
ers here.
Already, 25.5
teaching posi-
tions have been
reinstated after a
total of 69.5
teaching posi-
tions were elimi-
nated this year,
Ms. Jermey
reports.
Of those, 36.5.
were eliminated
to meet savings
dictated by the
three-year Social
Contract, which
expires in
Manch, 1996.
The remaining
33 positions
were eliminated
to achieve sav-
ings that will
allow teachers
whose salaries
were frozen for
three years to
restore their
position on a 12 -
year salary grid -
"People were
being really hard
bit (by that
salary freeze)
and would have
lost up to
$80,000 over
their secondary
school career,"
reports Ms. Jer-
mey.
The board
"hopes to place
as many teachers
as possible back
in the class-
room," notes
Ajax trustee and
employee rela-
tions liaison
Colleen Jordan.
She says
teachers who are
laid off will be
offered supply
teaching posi-
tions.

Incidence of rabies down
butpets should protected
O Durham cited as to Ontario, despite the fact it too late.
"If you've got it, you're
almost doomed," says Mr.
Connor, who advises people to
investigate bites immediately.
This year, officials are worried
about the inevitable spread of
raccoon rabies from the United
States. Most recently, cases
have been reported in New
York State, just three kilome-
tres from the Ontario border.
"When it gets across (the
border), sometime this year, it
will create havoc for us," says
. "We're never
going to be able to
relax on this."
One of the
ways the
Ontario Min-
istry of Natural
Resources
(MNR) will deal with this is
with a trap, vaccinate and
release program for raccoons,
to run from June 19 to Nov. 3.
The MNR is also continuing
its efforts to eliminate fox
rabies, in which vaccine baits
are dropped by aircraft. For

DURHAM — Vaccinating
your pet is the best weapon
against rabies.
Alex Connor, manager of
Environmental Health at the
Durham Region Health
Department, stresses the
importance of having pets vac-
cinated and keeping them
away from wild animals and
other unfamiliar pets.
So far this year in Durham,
the incidence of rabies is at an
all-time low, with only two
reported cases — a cow and a
skunk.
There have been no reported
cases of dog rabies this year.
The highest in the past 10
years was five cases of dog
rabies back in 1986. Mr. Con-
nor attributes the low rate to
Durham residents diligently
having pets vaccinated. He
points out the region has one

Left, Wayne Hutchison will bring his Mobile Showroom to your home. At
right, Inside you'll find his display of TECH WELD 2000 WINDOWS
Wayne Hutchinson brings to the
replacement window and door business a
new and long overdue feature. It's a
Mobile Showroom which just may be the
only one in Canada.
"The day is gone when you carried
some brochures and a sample window to
a customer's home," explains Wayne. "So
I obtained a retired North York Mobile
Library truck and installed
interior walls along with all of /
my window samples."
When you call Fr THIS
Durham Windows and
Doors for a free
estimate, Wayne will
show up at your door,
with his Mobile
Showroom which you'llEVI
enter by way of a sliding
patio door. WIN
Inside, displayed on the
walls, are the Tech Weld 2000
series of vinyl windows which h1l;-i-
free
to operate and you'll also discover
the many special features including how
they can be cleaned without going
outside.
""After being in this business for 18
years, I can honestly say these are the
finest windows on the market," says
Wayne. "They're tripled sealed to reduce
air leakage and come with heavy duty
hardware."
If you so desire, you can also choose
the Low -E -Glass which filters out the
ultra violet rays keeping your home
cooler in the summer and eliminate the
fading of your curtains, drapes and
furniture.
All of the windows come
with a lifetime warranty
JUNE and a ten year guarantee
Ion the installation.
Wayne would also
like his customers to
rH know that he does all of
the estimates
RY personally, eliminating
the cost of a salesperson
1 0 W "I also, along with a
helper, do all of the
installations," he says. 'This is
to ensure that every customer gets a
high quality job done at the best possible
price."
Durham Windows and Doors is
located at 696 King St. W. in Oshawa or
