For example, the board policy says a school community council must include parents and guardians of enrolled stu- dents, community representatives, the principal, and a teacher and another school employee. A student is mandato- ry at secondary schools and is recom- mended at elementary schools. Though the policy recommends councils should not exceed 21 members — the majority of which must he par- ents and guardians — "most schools will have a problem getting that many people out, especially for elections, which are pretty intimidating," believes Ms. Shea. Still, she hopes many will embrace the chance to have a say in their chil- dren's education. "It will give them the chance to discuss more of the nitty gritty of what goes on in their school...and will give them an organized politi- cal voice. It will help both sides understand one another better." Councils will have a say in numerous issues, including: • school code of student behav- ior • selection of principals • extracurricu- lar activities in the school • setting school budget priorities. The policy also says council members must maintain a school -wide focus on all issues — a concern "brought up over and over again" by parents worried some will join to address one issue, such as a staff member, reports Ms. Shea. Many schools, including Lincoln Avenue Public School in Ajax, are already in the initial stages of establishing coun- cils. "People are certainly interest- ed in the concept of providing informed suggestions," explains principal Neil Simpson. While participants will learn more about how the education system works, councils will also "challenge the status quo. They will force us to look at what we do again and make it better," says Mr. Simpson. He believes one of the biggest chal- lenges facing schools will be to ensure "every facet of the school population is involved." That includes cultures "which bring different values" to a school, as well as both mothers and fathers, though women are "traditionally" more active at schools. Mr. Simpson also hopes to see par- ents of students from a wide variety of grades, though "people with younger children tend to get more involved." As school boundaries are continually being extended, and children have to travel farther. parents of younger children especially, have to make proper arrangements for getting their child safely to school. For some people, school buses are still available; but that option is decreasing for many, while the option of a taxi is not an affordable one. In some cases, parents simply trust that their child will be able to cross a busy main street to get to school. There is another alternative, however. It is the service provided by Pickway Transportation, a local business currently operating two buses, with additional vehicles planned for September. Pickway Transportation was started by GILIEZFAU FI1lS7kM 0 • Contact Lenses to Binocular Vision • Perceptual Testing • Dispensing of all Types of Frances & Contacts 1885 GWWM Road, Sl lit 212 Plc 11111 , 00do, L1V6R6 09-M, 663.1175 Oshawa Cmtrt, S%w om Road Otlhawat, Onttrlo, L1J 2K5 5714=1 A- F -iYGffiA ' Deborah Dunn in September 1992. Then, she was transporting just one child to school. Five months later she had 29 children. And when the 1995-96 school year beings this coming September her passengers will have more than quadrupled. Some of them will also be as young as one year old. You might have seen the small Pickway Transportation mini -bus traveling the local streets mornings, mid -days and afternoons. But this isn't a typical school transportation service. Pickway's clients are the parents and their children. It is parents, not schools, who request the service. Pickway transports the children primarily to nursery schools and day care centers and private schools such as Montessori. Unlike some buses, the Pickway mini -bus includes seat belts. In addition, car seats - provided by parents - are used for toddlers under two, who are seated at the front. Booster seats can be provided by parents for the smaller children over two, if desired. Most of the children are picked up and dropped off right at their door. Alternatively, some parents organize group pick-up. That means, a group of RETAIL INTERIORS INC. • retail planning & design • store fixturing / V •contracting • artwork CALL US V V TO FIND OUT HOW OUR DRAWINGS 8 PLANNING EXPERTISE WILL PUT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS INTO YOUR 61.16NM ACCOUNT WHEN IT IS TIME TO EXPAND OR RENOVATET CALL 837-0696 children wait at a particular point and are dropped off there at the end of the day. The advantage is that each family of that group pays a reduced rate, and children have the benefit of linking up with others from their immediate neighbourhood. At the private schools, nursery and day care centers, the driver goes to the classroom with the child. In this way, information is passed from the teacher to an adult, who in turn, ensures the information is passed on to the parents. In some instances, the younger children are even helped with dressing and undressing. When the child is returned home, the driver waits to make sure that an adult is at the home. In essence, the Pickwav driver assumes the role of alternate parent for the period that the child is entrusted to her. It's worth noting that there is great flexibility in the service offered by Pickway, as evident by the variety of rates available. Some parents. for example, are able to take their child to school but cannot pick them up because of work commitments. So there is one- way or a two-way rate. Allowances are also made for the varied kindergarten schedules starting in September, to meet the needs of both junior and senior kinderearen children and their families. In addition, there is a family rate, for more than one child in a family; and there is a single -parent rate. The popularity of this service has increased as parents of children in day care and private schools realized the convenience and safety it provides. From the children's perspective, they are comfortable traveling in an atmosphere that is not only safe and friendly, but one which they help decorate: the bus interior is covered with their favorite stickers (3.118 in all) and magnets (190). During the school year. Pickway's first run is at 7 a.m. and ends at about 9:10 a.m. Another run begins at about 11 am. and the final one starts at about 3 p.m If you are the parent of a child attending a day care center or school in September, and would like more information about the rates and service, call Deborah at 420-4574.
