Schools band
together to
form one voice
By LINDA WHITE
STAFF REPORTER
AJAX- PICKERII —
Though a Beach Boys song
has long encouraged kids to
be true to their school, stu-
dents from seven local
schools could write a new
chorus to the popular tune.
That's because they're
banding together to share
ideas, help their communi-
ties and form one political
voice — all in the name of
school spirit.
ESCAP, the Executive
Student Council of Ajax -
Pickering, is comprised of
representatives from Ajax
High School, Archbishop
Denis O'Connor Catholic
High School, Dunbarton
High School, Exeter High
School, Pickering High
School, Pine Ridge Sec-
ondary High School and St.
Mary Catholic Secondary
School.
It's the brainchild of
Ajax High student council
president Neal Nathani,
who decided last summer
"to build a network of com-
munication. There's so
much we can share ideas
about," he explains.
Fund-raising events and
activities designed to build
school spirit and promote
cultural understanding are
just some of the things each
has in common, notes the
Grade 12 student, who has
sat on a provincial student
organization.
Area schools also share
an interest in their commu-
nities. ESCAP has already
held a joint fund-raiser'to
support the United Way of
Ajax -Pickering. Mr.
Nathani hopes those types
of events help promote
friendly school rivalry.
The council also gives
schools a "louder political
voice," believes ESCAP's
first chairman. "Education
is being revolutionized with
the Royal Commission on
Learning and talk of stan-
dardized testing.
"ESCAP gives us a plat-
form to voice our opinions
on issues. After all, we're
the people being directly
affected by those deci-
sions."

Firms surveyed on Pickering airport
By REGINA PEZ7ARELLO
SPECIAL. TO THE NEWS ADVEKnSER
AJAX-PICKERING — The Ajax -Pickering
Board of Trade is looking for opinions from
members on an airport in Pickering.
A survey sent out to all board members asked
whether they agree or disagree with the conclu-
sio ;of the Southern Ontario Airport Study
which says "the Pickering site could be very
attractive for development of a corporate/com-
muter airport."
Members were also asked if they want the
board to represent them if the business group
were to lobby on either side of the issue.
The board notes a Transport Canada study
aimed at identifying possible sites for airport
•t:4ro.k; _ _ fw. 1 iii r
development or expansion in southern Ontario
"appears to lean in favor" of building a Picker-
ing airport over enlarging Hamilton's facility to
relieve pressure on Pearson International.
A board representative says the survey is
only designed to determine where members
stand on the issue and is not an indication of a
future plan to lobby for or against an airport.

ESCAP hopes to play a larger role
Ajax, Pickering schools next year
FROM PAGE 1
Next year, for example, ESCAP
plans to host forums at each school on
issues deemed important, such as racial
problems and educational destriraming.
It will then compile a report based on
student opinions which will be for-
warded to appropriate bodies, such as
the Durham Board of Education and
the Ministry of Education and Train-
ing.
Much -of this academic year has
been spent focusing on objectives and
developing a constitution. Establishing
that groundwork will give ESCAP a
stronger role at schools next year, Mr.
Nathani believes.
It hosted a leadership conference
last weekend at Pine Ridge, where
incoming student councils got advice
from outgoing councils. Students got
tips on effective leadership skills, pub-
licizing events, managing stress and
time, and dealing with administration.
Each school takes a turn hosting

Justice served
Let the court decision this week regarding a pit
bull attack in Pickering serve as a model for simi-
lar cases throughout the country.
In this case, involving an attack by two pit
bulls on another dog, justice was swift and severe.
But it should serve as an effective deterrent for the
keeper of any dangerous pet.
Follwing a day of testimony Thursday involv-
ing a dozen witnesses, justice of the peace Robert
G. Harris ordered the dogs destroyed immediately.
Court testimony indicated the attack last month
was not isolated and left neighbors in the commu-
nity unable to enjoy their surrounding environment
-- one they have earned the right to enjoy unfet-
tered.
The decision was severe, particularly for the
owner of the pit bulls, who admitted in court his
responsibility in the attack. But it was fair and
sends a clear message to the community.
This decision will effectively serve to free
those many neighborhood residents who have lived
in fear for the past several months because of the
dogs, who were eventually ordered put down by
justice of the peace Harris.
No one wants to see pets that are well cared for
and properly trained put to death, but the nature of
certain breeds must be considered in cases like
this. There can be no lenience and no delay when
the safety of other animals — or children —is
even remotely in doubt. For their part, residents in
the neighborhood worked together for the common
good of the community.
This decision was a good one. Let it be a lesson
to all of us who own pets.

t dies in tree as PAW falls to come to rescue
By REGINA PEZZARELLO
SPEML TO ME NEWS ADVER 1M
PICXERM — Don't expect Picker-
ing -Ajax -Whitby Animal Control
(PAW) to come to your cat's rescue if
it's stuck up a tree.
Pickering resident Ken Thomas found
that out the hard way Wednesday when
his cat climbed a tree outside his house
around 7:30 pm.
Mr. Thomas called the fire depart-
ment, but was toll to contact PAW.
"It looked like it was struggling to get
down," he says of his pet, which later
died in the tree.
PAW advised Mr. Thomas its policy
didn't allow staff to rescue cats from
trees. "I was told to leave it alone. They
III
said that if he got up the tree himself, he
court get down himself," explains Mr.
Thomas.
But his cat began to climb higher and
became wedged between two branches,
prompting him to call PAW again to tell
the agency he thought the cat was dead.
He was told PAW staff could get the
dead cat down the next morning.
"I don't understand why they couldn't
have come that [right, instead of the next
morning after it was dead," says Mr.
Thomas. "It doesn't make sense they
could only come when it's dead, but not
when it was alive."
Mr. Thomas didn't wait for PAW to
show up. He called a tree climber to
retrieve Joey. "All I could picture was

Residents feel at home
at Cedarcroft Place
By Peter Hushes
If I had to choose
somewhere to spend my
golden years then I'd
choose a place like
Cedarcroft Place.
Located in Oshawa at
1649 King St E., this
premier retirement home
,provides residents with
the kind of services and
amenities you'd find at a
nice hotel.
All your meals are
included and served in a
bright and spacious
dining room. There is also
a library with the feel of
home and an eating area
where you can sit down to a private
meal when friends and family visit.
There is 24 hour nursing
supervision with a doctor available at
all times.
There is housekeeping and
laundry services and planned activities
including bingo, cards, sing songs and
pub nights.
Administrator Marjorie Beattie
goes out of her way to make sure the
transition goes as smooth as possible
in welcoming people here from their
own homes.
"Cedarcroft Place is designed in a
way to make people feel at home." she
esplains. -We offer them
accommodations to suit every need and
they can decorate their rooms anyway
they like. -
Colette Mousseau has lived at
Cedarcroft since January and says she

Healthy lifestyle makes you look and feel younger
The secret of eternal youth is something that has
fascinated scientists and science fiction writers for years.
As yet, no one has found the answer, but certainly today's
adults have a far better chance of living longer, staying
healthy and keeping their youthful looks than their
grandparents did.
There was a time when people over 50 were regarded as
elderly. Now, even people over 60 can still give their
grandchildren a run for their money in many aspects of
daily life.
But what is age? Is it the image you see in the mirror or
is it the way you feel?
Of course, you can't turn back the clock or reverse the
aging process. But doing simple things like looking after
yourself better, physically as well as mentally, goes a long
way to preserving the youthful state of mind.
Here are some of the ways you can make the most of
the rest of your life — whatever your age is. -

EATING HABITS
1. Eat a healthy diet. This gives your body the fuel it
needs to function properly. Make sure your diet includes
whole -grain breads, fresh fruit and cereals. Cut down on
fats and sugars.
A good eating pattern should enable you to keep your
weight fairly stable. If you repeatedly lose weight and
gain it again, you stretch and stress your skin and it shows
through wrinkles and poor general skin tone.
ACTIVITIES
2. Keep yourself moving! Don't fall into the trap of
saying "I'm getting older, so I've got to slow down."
Obviously, you've got to be careful if you have particular
health problems and should seek your doctor's advice if
you are planning to start a nein exercise re(,ime. The last
thing you should do. howecr. is t,ikc root in tfu' :rmrhair.

A brisk daily walk does wonders for your general well-
being. If you get the go-ahead from your doctor, then you
may take up a new sport or catch up on one you enjoyed a
few years ago. Your local leisure centre usually has a
number of activities on the go.
MENTAL EXERCISE
3. Exercise the mind as well as the body. Join a class at ,
community college. You will have the opportunity to do
everything from learning a foreign language to cooking or
how to research your family tree.
Make the most of your local library. Many now have
video movies and CDs as well as books and magazines.
4. Drink alcohol -only in moderation and don't smoke.
You know smoking can kill you, so why not kill the habit
first? Your doctor or the lung association can help you
with pamphlets on how to make quitting easier.
5. Don't get stuck in a rut. This is the worst thing you
can do. Look for new ways to keep challenging yourself
and you will not only feel younger, but you may look
younger as well.
Motorhome
vacation is a great
way to travel
Think camping is just for the young? Think again.
Recreation vehicle camping and touring are
favorite activities for anyone who's young at heart.
In fact, nearly half of the nine million RVs in North
America are owned by people aged 55 and up.
While not everyone can backpack or tent -camp due
to age or physical restrictions, anyone can enjoy
outdoor living with a motorhome. In an RV, you are
surrounded by accessible home comforts, because
units are equipped with living, dining, sleeping and
bathroom facilities. Modern kitchens, complete with
refrigerators and freezers, enable RVers to keep
foods on hand for special diets. On -board closets and
storage space eliminate the need to pack, unpack and
carry heavy suitcases in and out of hotels.
With a motorhome, you can vacation or enjoy
extended retirement living more economically by
avoiding high-priced hotels and restaurants. The
average campground charges only one-fourth the
price of most hotels.
Whether for frequent getaways or a "snowbird's"
annual migration to warmer winter climates, many
people often choose motorhome parks with
expanded facilities that concentrate on the senior
traveler. Resort -like campgrounds provide golf,
tennis, shuffleboard and other group activities. Many
have swimming pools, saunas and whirlpools for
relaxation.
One reason for the popularity of the motorhome
lifestyle among seniors is the sense of community it
fosters. RVers share common interests with a vast
network of friends. Through camping clubs, seniors
often meet socially at conventions, rallies and
campgrounds. Many offer group excursions to make
travel more fin and secure.
Many people also use their motorhomes as guest
houses when traveling to visit family and friends.
Not only do RVs provide comfortable travel and
lodging while enroute, they also provide the privacy
during their visit to which they are accustomed.
The flexibility and economics associated with RV
travel encourages greater use by people on a fixed
budget. Kept stocked with food and other essentials,
motorhomes are ready for frequent getaways with
little preparation.
A study conducted by Pannell Kerr Forster found
that motorhome vacations are considerably more
economical than traditional trips by car, bus, train or
airplane, regardless of trip destination or duration.
An RV vacation costs from one-half to three-fourths
less than comparable vacations by any other mode of
transportation.
Never too late to start
planning for your
retirement
Although most experts advise getting an early start
on your retirement planning, many people put it off
until the last minute.
If you are in your late 50s and still haven't
evaluated your goals or resources, it is time to get
started. Ready or not, your retirement date is fast
approaching.
Late -starters should take these initial steps,
according to Bjorn Erik Borgen, president and
founder of the Founders Mutual Funds Group — a
51.3 -billion money -management company based in
Denver, Colorado:
1. Reduce your debt so you can boost your savings.
2. Take advantage of employer-sponsored savings
plans, especially tax-deferred vehicles.
3. Examine your
investment portfolio,
including any employer-ar
sponsored retirement
plans. You should knowSo

Diet more important as you get older
As you age, it's important to get enough exercise and
eat a healthful diet.
But, experts say, "healthful diet" means different
things to different people. Especially when those people
are over 65.
While the dietary key to good health for everyone is
to eat a well-balanced diet of foods from all the food
groups, older people have some special needs.
For instance, studies show that the elderly produce
less stomach acid than younger people do, which
interferes with the body's absorption of vitamins B-12
and B-6, folacin, iron, calcium and zinc.
Deficiencies in these nutrients can affect the nervous
system and lead to depression and memory loss. And
insufficient calcium can cause osteoporosis, or loss of
bone mass. When bones become thin and brittle, they
break more easily.
Liver, red meat, poultry, eggs, milk and shellfish
a financial plan
projection of your cash flow once you retire. Add
any employer-sponsored plans, your own tax-
deferred plans and other investments as well as
government pension.
"Develop a retirement -years strategy for the use of
your investments," says Borgen. "You may want to
continue to conserve assets for future needs or you
may need to reposition assets into income-producing
investments to increase your monthly income after
YOU retire."
Think long term. Don't be concerned with the day-
to-day fluctuations in the stock market. Find the right
investments for your needs and stick with them.
Borgen says for people who want to make the most
out of life, the time to start planning for the future is
now. Most people overestimate the amount of
disposable income they will have at retirement age.
Planning now can change that.

supply vitamin B-12. Whole grains, dried beans, red
meat, poultry, potatoes, bananas, eggs and nuts provide
vitamin B-6. Dairy products are a good source of
calcium.
Even for the elderly, exercise is essential for health,
experts say.
Regular weight-bearing exercise deposits calcium in
the bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Exercise
also helps people over 65 maintain muscle mass,
facilitates respiratory function, mobility and ambulatory
capacity and improves overall strength.
Aerobic exercise promotes cardiovascular health.
Another essential for good health is maintaining
normal body weight. Experts recommend eating
nutrient -dense foods — foods with a high proportion of
nutrients to calories.
Good choices include fish, poultry, eggs, low-fat
dairy products, grains, fruits and vegetables.

Planning cemetery arrangements together,
ahead of time, before the need arises,
spares your family from making difficult
decisions later at a stressful and emotional
time.
