Mr. de Vries, 71, will represent the First Canadian Parachute Battalion as part of the Canada Remembers contingent visiting the country May 1 to 11 to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the war. The Canadian contingent will include over 100 veterans from every regiment and battalion that served in the Netherlands dur- ing its liberation in 1945, as well as federal government representatives. Thousands of other veterans are making the trip as guests of the people of Holland. A 200 -person honor guard and band from the Canadian Forces will also travel overseas. Mr. de Vries, a native of Holland who took part in the D-Dav invasion on June 6, 1944, says the trip should be a memorable one for the war veterans, who he feels so richly deserve the accolades - "It gives veterans a feeling of pride and gratitude that somebody's acknowledging that you did something years ago. Kewal Mancha, owner of the Gas Go gas :station, at 200 Kingston Rd. E. near Picker- ing Beach Road, said he had just stepped outside when an explosion rocked the train building on the property. "I was cutting my nails outside, just near the garbage bin," when the blast occurred and the building burst into flames. "I cried. I don't know (what caused the explosion)," said a distraught Mr. Mancha. No one else was in the building at the time of the explosion. Ajax resident Danny McConnell said be had just left the Costco Wholesale store next to the gas station when "I heard an horrific bang - "Smoke was coming out of the front of the building and the bricks had fallen off part of the building. "The Dutch and the French are the only ones who welcome the veterans with open arms. We're treated like a nuisance (in Canada)," he adds. One of the ceremonies will take place in Apeldoorn, where paper maple leaves made by Canadian chil- dren will flutter down over the parade of veterans. A special ceremony will also be held at the Groesbeek Ceme- tery, where hundreds of Canadians sol- diers are buried. "You feel a little sad again about the guys you knew who are gone. Some- times it gets a little emotional," says Mr. de Vries, who was among thou- sands of veterans honored with medals during D -Day ceremonies last June in France. Eight veterans of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 322 in Ajax will also make the trip to Holland. While local veterans and thousands of other Canadians soldiers take part in the ceremonies in Holland, the Ajax Legion branch will hold a four-day event of its own. There's an open house at the Hunt Street branch May 5 to 8, a pub night May 5; a dance featuring a band May 6; breakfast from 10 a.m. to noon and parade at 2 p.m. May 7 followed by refreshments; and a VE dinner for vet- erans, seniors and the public May 8 (limited number of tickets). Nowhere is the need for better communication more evident than in Pickering, where a large number of resi- dents know more about the types of services offered in Scarborough than they do about what's offered in their own backyard. "A lot of people who live in Pickering have physicians in Scarborough and it takes them a while to make the transition," Ms. Moore points out. She says the information compiled at the public scs- sions will be used by the hos- pital to develop its long-term strategy, which will be released next month. The hospital has also solicited comments from several health-care agencies and physicians to help in develop- ing the plan. RONALD MARTINO & SON FUNERAL DIRECTORS r: (torm" of West Hili) :oral. One boy suffered scratches in the incident outside Rose - bank Public School around 3:45 p.m., Durham Regional Police report. At press time, police couldn't say how the boy became involved -- if he witnessed the attack by the pit bulls on a Chow -Chow and decided to intervene, if he'd been walk- ing his dog at the time of the incident, or if he was a Rose - bank student in the wrong place at the wrong time. They believe the pit bulls escaped from the yard of a home on Rougemount Drive by digging out under a fence and making their way to the school on nearby Rosebank Road. The pit bulls were captured and the Chow -Chow was taken to a veterinarian's clinic for treatment. Pickering -Ajax -Whitby Animal Control, which couldn't be reached by press time, was considering putting the pit bulls in quarantine, say police, who were unable to pro- vide further details. Strange brew In 1990 when Bob Rae's NDP steamed into office, the province was looking for change. Ontario had had enough of taxes and unemploy- ment. And despite the fact no one would admit to hav- ing voted for the NDP, there they were. Inexperienced and full of promises, the new government brought lots of new faces to Queen's Park, fumly in urge of our finances. It's April 23, 1995. People have had enough of taxes and unemployment. It's expected Premier Rae will call a provincial elec- tion any day and the electorate will have to decide between the now experienced Bob Rae and the inexpe- rienced Lyn McLeod and Mike Harris. The question those party leaders are facing now is how to sway the voter. What do they really want? One thing the electorate continues to be hot about is taxes. Despite the Province's holding tightly to the tax reins in the last 12 months, we're hearing it's not enough. People want tax cuts. And, they want jobs. Pretty straightforward when you get right down to it, but who can deliver? If promises of tax cuts and new jobs are what Ontario wants to hear, then Mike Harris is fust out of the gate. But he still has to shake off the Brian Mulroney curse. If the electorate just wants anyone but Rae, Lyn McLeod's Liberals may be sail into downtown Toronto on the `sea of red' left over from the federal election. And then there's the NDP. No one voted for them in the last election, but they won by a landslide. Can they do it again? Stranger things have happened. This is politics after all. Let's offer something to our teenagers To the editor: Re: Article about teen programs: I would like to thank Pickering Councillor Maurice Brenner for tak- ing the initiative in trying to get something going for teenagers in the area. I agree with him. A lot of our teens don't have anything to do or anywhere to go in their spare time. There are a number of teenagers out there who are not interested in the usual organized sports program we have. They enjoy their skate- boards, BMX and freestyle bikes. The problem is there is no place for them to go. Wherever they go usual- ly they we chased away and told not to Dome back. These utnagers have feelings too. They want to be accepted and given a chance as well. I know the way they dress isn't to everyone's liking, but that is something we have to accept. We all have our choices. Clothes don't make the person. All these teens want is a place to do their thing and not bother any- one. They want a place to go to where they can skateboard and use their bikes and a place to go when the weather is bad. Taxes we used for a lot of differ- ent activities in our community; why can't there be something for these kids? They have other inter- ests besides skateboarding and bilk- ing; they also enjoy indoor games such as pool, air hockey, board games, monopoly, etc. Why can't we give them a place and a few of these indoor enjoyments as well? We have a huge recreation centre and I'm sure there could be an area that could be utilized for this pur- pose. Also, I believe when I was at the open house at our new police station at Brock Road and Hwy. 2 we were told there were rooms available for community use. What better combination would we want than to have our teens and our police in the same building carrying out their own activities? As concerned parents, we should be giving Mr. Brenner our full sup- port in carrying out his mission in any way we can, and that includes giving some of our time. AJ. Campbell, Pickering Act now to prevent another fatality To the editor: Recently a young child lost her life in a traffic acci- dent on Victoria Road in Whitby. This mad is more commonly known as the Baseline, which is a major traffic artery between Whitby and Ajax. For anyone not familiar, the Baseline is a two-lane highway between Ajax and Ding. There are many commercial establishments on this road, it is heavily travelled and also used as a supply route for the a somo- five industries in Oshawa and Ajax. Cars and heavy trucks up to 18 wheelers are, in many instances, being driven too fast for this road. The accident occurred at the location where the Lynde Marsh is connected with a culvert tinder the baseline. Ibis location is a favored spot for local youth to play ice hockey in the winter. In the spring and summer it draws parents and their children to do some fishing in the marsh. As there are no facilities to park other than the side of the road, it is common to see rows of cars parked at both sides of the street. You don't have to be a twffre expert to realize that tris makes for a danger= situation. Cars pass by the posted speed limit of 80 kan/hahr and young children cross the highway from between pedwd cars. This taawbon has existed for many years and it a a wonder that no fatal accident has happelhed before. As our politicians approve new eonmnercial and resi- dential developments, they will also increase traffic. I'm sure this road will be a four4ane highway in the near future. Regional government will have to make a decision to save the marsh or to improve the highway. Pickering 420-4220 SUMMER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER... . ARE YOU READY FOR M • Whitby Oshawa 166-5050 436-2122 P Mud flies over mess at school By LINDA WHITE STAFF REPORTER PICKERING — The separate school board's name is mud in the opinion of parents who fear poor drainage at their children's school poses health risks and hurts the stu- dents' quality of life. Parents from St. Monica Catholic School showed up in force at the Durham Region Roman Catholic Sepa- rate School Board's meeting Tuesday, demanding that poor drainage at the Twyn Rivers Drive school be repaired by September. They're calling for catch basins in the parking lot and driveways, which now "drain directly into the schoolyard play areas," according to a report from the parent -teacher association. "On a number of occasions...fuel can be both seen and smelled entering the playground. This practice must be stopped immediately... as there are a number of health concerns by allowing these waste materials to flow into the children's play area" Parents are also pointing the finger at improper grading for drainage prob- lems in the playground, forcing chil- dren to "play in areas which have standing water, which in turn creates mud that is tracked into the school and has destroyed the clothes of the chil- dren" Severe overcrowding at the nine- year-old school is also a problem. St. Monica was built to accommodate 450 pupils and now has a student enrol- ment of about 800 — who must remain indoors at recess and lunch "for days" following heavy rains because of the muddy playground, according to par- ent Tom A]bani. While St. Elizabeth Seton school will ease overcrowding, parents aren't convinced it will open its doors in Sep- tember and are urging the board to pressure the builder to ensure it opens as scheduled. The board's property and transporta- tion committee has asked staff to con- sider installing catch basins in the parking loop and regrading the proper- ty at St. Monica, which could cost $180,000. Staff will also comment on putting the school on shifts in a report due in early May. But no decision will be made until the full board meets again on May 15. Chairman Tom Oldman has assured parents that "funding is not an issue. We don't like the situation. We have to come up with a plan of action." ]F • TIME • QUALITY o GENTLE DENTAL CARE ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU WE ARE AVA -ABLE TO SERVE YOU WE WELCOME NEW PATIENTS WE r PEOPLE OF ALL AGES 24 HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICE 3 Harwood Ave. S., Ajax, Ontario (South of Hwy. For instance, the councils will have much greater responsibilities than many parent -teacher associations whose main function is often fund-raising. "Parents who think the councils are nothing more than PTAs are turned off," agrees Durham West MPP Jim Wise- man. "But the more they know about (councils), the more excited they get. Parents want to be involved in the schools. Their cynicism is quite high." Still, the advice councils offer will be just that — advice, noted Ministry of Education officer Naomi Gibson. "Some want that advice to be a decision, but it won't be." In the selection of a principal, for example, a school board must adhere to collective agreements and board policy. But it could, for instance, ask for a coun- cil's advice on three finalists before making a decision. A council should expect an explana- tion if their advice isn't followed, Ms. Gibson noted. Community councils will also have a say in: • curriculum and program goals and Priorities • the responses of the school or school board to achievement in provincial and board assessment programs • preparation of the school profile • school budget priorities, including local capital -improvement plans • school-community communication By LINDA WHITE STAFF REPORTER DURHAM — Controversy contin- ues to brew over the amount spent on coffee and meals for public school board bureaucrats, but it's nothing more than a tempest in a teapot, officials maintain. Trustees and staff receive "light meals" at meetings and seminars "of reasonable duration", but costs "are kept to an absolute minimum," assures Durham Board of Education communi- cations manager Mary Brown. But Oshawa trustee Mike Nicholson — who estimates the board's food bill at no less than $30,000 — believes that money could be better spent elsewhere. "When we have children going to school hungry, how can we feed staff who have a good salary?" he asks. "We could start a food program or milk pro- gram in low-income areas. "It's not a war between me and staff," Mr. Nicholson assures. "It's a war on policy." The debate has sparked rumors which have hurt staff morale, staff con- tend. But that practi often saves the board money in the to run, according to Mrs. Brown. Teachers, for example, may be ask to attend a training session after sch until about 8 p.m. If training took pla during the day, the board would faced with paying $110 a day for a su ply teacher. "If (teachers) are asked to come i for training on their own time, we gi them a sandwich and/or salad. School community councils were among the recommendations from the Royal Commission on Learning report released earlier this year. The ministry has told school boards to develop poli- cies directing schools in their jurisdic- tion to begin establishing councils in September and to have those councils in place by June 1996. Parents and guardians of students enrolled in the school must make up the majority of the council. Its members must also include community represen- tatives, school principal, teacher, and non -teaching staff member. She could "only guess" at the annual cost of meals and coffee, but says trustees will receive a report outlining the amount spent on meals and coffee by the end of this month. P MOE asked to probe complaints about Pickering recycling firm By SAL BOMMARITO SPECIAL To TM NEWS ADVER'J7.4ER PIC — Town coun- cil has asked the Ministry of Environment to look into com- plaints aimed at a recycling oper- ation on Toy Avenue. A set of resolutions asking the MOE to report back to the Town on the operation by Can -Sort Recycling Ltd. and Ever Green Recycle Canada Inc. was approved by councillors Tuesday night. The resolutions also requested the Town's chief building official take "aggressive" action to ensure buildings on the site con- form to the Ontario Building Code and the Town clerk take similar action to ensure the oper- ation conforms to Ajax's proper- ty standards bylaws. "Ibis issue has been ongoing for some time, Ward 2 local councillor Sherry Senis said "It's been let slide. We have to take aggressive action. We need to send a strong message." Tire resolutions were approved after business people located near the waste -disposal operation on Toy Avenue told council they were fed up with the Town's inaction on the issue. "We stand before you today, not to speak with regard to future positive development, but to lament the severe depredation of our collective properties, not by recession, not by natural disaster, but by the apparent inaction of Town council, which puts for- ward an excuse that in dealing with ventures that need a licence from the Ministry of Environ- ment, there is no standing poli- cy," said an angry John O'Haflo- ran, president of Sonic Automo- bile Enterprises. "In the final analysis, who will Speak for our collective land val- ues?" he asked. "Who is respon- sible for the fact that in the Region of Durham in excess of 40 per cent of the permits issued by the MOE reside on Toy Avenue?" But mayor Wayne Anhurs said senior Town staff have his- torically dealt with operations which require MOE approval, rather than council. Ihere's been no effort on the part of council to provide inap- propriate direction to staff. It's unfortunate that this type of thing has been dealt with at the admin- istration level, but council does feel an obligation that the appro- priate direction be provided." At the same time, mayor Arthurs said the Town feels an obligation to encourage recycling operations in fight of its ongoing court battle to keep a proposed landfill for Durham out of Pick- enng- "Coercil has the obligation to look at allernsative ways of waste disposal and there's a risk inher- ent in that," he said. But, he added, "There's work needed to tighten up these types of opera - Dom but there was no deliberate f h _ kad -I.5-F.•S M move by council to ignore these concems." Council adopted a new proce- dure to deal with MOEE circula- tions under the Environmental Protection Act, which will ensure future applications will be reviewed by council. Todd Hoffman, lawyer for Can -Sort Recycling Ltd., said the company "supports council's res- olution. They are confident that the MOE will confirm that all opera- tions at 1048 Toy Ave. are in total compliance with the certifr- Cate of approval. My clients also anticipate that this confirmation from the ministry will satisfy the concerns of neighboring busi- nesses." Mr. Hoffman also stated the company has taken steps to ensure its operation complies with building code, site plan and Property standards requirements. As part of the carne resolution, Council also deferred endorsing a request by P.G.R Septic Services Inc. on Toy Avenue for an amendment to its certificate of approval to permit the amount of hazardous and non -hazardous liquid waste it collects to be increased to 39,570 litres from the current 2,000 litres pending receipt of a report from the MOE. "Because we're dealing with hazardous and non -hazardous liquid waste, I feel morn comfort- able in taking this avenue," said councillor Senis. ON SAIL BEST AVAILABLE SAVEUP To $3, 350.le. The Deohaeko Support Net- work, a group of Durham -area parents with disabled adult chil- dren living on their own in the Rougemount Co -Op on Kingston Road, will receive $43.700 under the Province's Community Innovation Funding program, Mr. Wiseman announced. The provincial money will go to the Ajax -Pickering -Whitby Association for Community Liv- ing and the Durham Association for Family Respite Services to help fund the delivery of ser- vices to disabled adults living in the co-op housing project, he says. Deohaeko "is an innovative approach which will reduce costs associated with integrating disabled adults into the commu- nity. The funding will allow for the delivery of services within the building to help these peo- ple. "If this project works, we'll have a tax -saving model to help integrate the disabled into the community," Mr. Wiseman notes. Deohaeko was founded in 1989 by a group of parents who wanted to establish an integrated living environment for their dis- abled adult children. The Rougemount Co -Op allows their adult children with disabilities to live on their own with a support network on hand for them. Mr. Wiseman also announced $176,000 in annual funding for the Deohaeko Support Network housing project. The move between April 26 and April 29 to 555 Rossland Rd. W. in Oshawa will see the society's new offices open for regular business on Monday, May 1, says spokesperson Brenda McConnell. The Ajax CAS office at 15 Harwood Ave. S. won't close until 4:30 pm. on Wednesday, but only emergency calls will be handled that day. The main Oshawa office in the Midtown Mall on John Strut West will be open Wednes- day and Thai sday, but win be c1l sed to all but emergency business on Friday. Services provided by the CAS shouldn't be affected by closing the Ajax office, Ms. McConnell says. "It's not our intent to cut service. A lot of work is done in clients' horses. By no means are we intending to cut back on services.., she adds. The society needs more space and the new building provides an extra 11,200 square feet. As well, the CAS is trying to "keep our costs within the existing budget," Ms. McConnell says. Last year, the Durham CAS helped more than 3,400 families. It has a staff of 110, with 28 in Ajax, three in Uxbridge and the remainder in Oshawa Office hours at the new location will be 8:30 am. to 4:30 p.m. during the week. One of her favorite places was Wailea in Maui where she saw Lloyd Bridges give a speech for 'Save the Whales'. After leaving Hawaii, she was on her way to Australia to visit family and found a lot of friends among Australians. "Iite Australians were so generous they wouldn't let me spend any money." After reuniting with Alan and Shirley Kerr whom she'd met during a trip to Europe in 1989, they took her all over Mel- bourne, introducing her to other Aus- tralians who also befriended her. "Aus- tralians are very hospitable people," she says. While in Australia, she tried kanga- rov and crocodile meat. " bey marinated the kangaroo with red wine and black berries and it was very good But I didn't like crocodile at all." One of the highlights of her trip was a ride on the Indian Pacific train on its 25th anniversary in service. But, a cyclone almost kept her from her destination of Perth. 'Mere was a terrible rainstorm and when I looked outside there was a Young river. It's a good thing I didn't have to go back because the track was flooded " After Australia, Mrs. Rowley made bw way to southeast Asia and the island of Phuket, home to a hotel that pix her up in the royal wing. "Everything was there, including shampoo, a robe, cologne and on my bed there was a lovely orchid„ .An Singapore she was impressed with the underground restaurants, stores and r subway. "You never saw the train. You - Pickering resident Lorna Rowley got up close and personal with an Australian worker and newly found feathered -friend at a sanctuary in Melbourne. Mrs. Rowley is an avid globetrotter who has a host of memories from her trips. wait there, suddenly the doors open and you never see the actual train until you are on it." During her next stop in Thailand, a visit to the Rose Garden near Bangkok left her scrambling up steps with other people intent on escaping a crowd. "So, I followed them But when I got up there I saw that you had to ride an elephant tf get down. There was no other way." Mrs Rowley prefers camel rides like the she went on during a trip to Tunisia in the 1980s. The tail end of this trek was spent in England, where she stayed at the Savoy Hotel in London. "It was like liv- ing in a pre-war country house," she says. Mrs. Rowley wish she'd stayed longer in England because preparations were under way for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. "It would have been nice toat. be there for th" Now that Mrs. Rowley is home, she's I oing to catch up on all her volunteer work which keeps her busy. As for future travel plans, she says she'd like to visit the Northwest Territo- ies, Yukon and Alaska. The Diabetes Education Centre at APGH begins offering free one-hour evening information sessions Thurs- day, April 27. "Every month, we'll be speaking on a topic of interest to people with diabetes and their families," says Ms. Fyfe. Dietitians, doctors, nurses, social workers and pharmacists will speak in their areas of expertise. A question -and -answer period will fol- low each session. The switch from beef/pork insulin to human insulin is the topic of the April 27 session featuring Marlene Grass and Irma Carson, diabetes nurse educators at the hospital. Sessions run from 7 to 8 pm. in the conference rooms in the west wing of the hospital. Pre -registration isn't required but anyone interested should call 428- 5269 for more information or to con- firm their attendance. qUA 0%) of HUMRED DAYsOR Lsss THAN FUN F ICE OF Z THE PR vls.
