Court grants National Sports
protection against creditors
PICKERING — It's business as usual at National
Sports Centre on Kingston Road after its parent com-
pany, National Gym Clothing Inc., filed for bankrupt-
cy protection from its creditors in court last week.
Despite the move by Norm Clements, president and
owner of the spacing goods company, there's no dan-
ger of the Pickering store closing, according to one
employee who would not give his name.
Mr. Clements could not be reached for comment.
Blair Davidson, senior vice-president of KPMG
Peat Marwick Thorne of Toronto, has been appointed
"monitor" in the case involving the Uxbridge -based
parent company.
Mr. Clements has been given until May 24 to come
up with a "plan of compromise" for creditors, accord-
ing to Mr. Davidson, who expressed optimism the
deadline could be reached.
National Sports has 12 stones employing a total of
600 people throughout the province.

Welfare rolls rise fourth month
DURHAM — March is
the fourth straight month the
Region's welfare rolls
increased.
Since February, 164 peo-
ple have joined the ranks of
Durham residents needing
social assistance.
Durham council health
and social services commit-
tee chairman and Whitby
mayor Tom Edwards says he
is concerned because there
has been a consistent
increase but notes "it's tradi-
tional for the numbers to rise
until the good weather
comes ..
Paul Cloutier, administra-
tor of income support in the
region, agrees. He expects
good weather will bring sea -
S0111311 employment.
The number of region resi-
dents on welfare in March
rose by 0.9 per cent or 164
people from the previous
month to 18,539. That total
includes 5,779 children.
"It is unfortunate, but it is
the after-effect of a recession
recovery," says Mr. Edwards.
However, the welfare rolls
have decreased by 11.2 per
cent since last March when
20,877 individuals collected
general welfare assistance.
The number of people get-
ting family benefit assistance,
which serves individuals for
a longer term, decreased
since February by seven.

tance caseload rose 1.1 per

Regular truck safety blitzes needed. dead woman's dad
By CHRIS BOVIE
DURHAM STAFF
DURHAM — Truck
safety blitzes need to con-
tinue on a regular basis,
says the father of a woman
killed near the Ajax -Whitby
border by a runaway truck
wheel.
The first day of a mass
inspection of transport
trucks on Hwy. 400 proved
to Angela Worona's father
Mike Worona the concerns
he's raised since the death
of his daughter on Hwy.
401 in January are valid.
The inspection resulted
in 66 per cent of trucks
being pulled off the roads
for repairs. The two-day
blitz Tuesday and
Wednesday saw police
cruisers and motorcycles
escorting trucks to Ministry
of Transportation stations
along a 40 -kilometre stretch
of the highway which
included Metro, York
Region and Innisfrl.
"I'm surprised the num-
bers are so high," Mr.
Worona said. "Truckers
knew about this safety blitz
well in advance."
Two more trucks lost
wheels while travelling
Hwy. 401 on Tuesday. No
one was hurt by the stray
wheels.
Transportation minister
come off.
"He said that when a
wheel is put on it has to be
tightened three or four
times," said Mr. Worona.
"When he's waiting for a
load of gravel he checks all
his wheels, but said that
many drivers sit and read
the paper. "
The concern is not only
over the condition of big
rigs, but also the dangerous
driving and speeding of cer-
Mike Farnan was on hand
during the safety inspec-
tions, but Mr. Worona
hopes it wasn't all show
and that the Province is sin-
cere in its efforts.
"They need to increase
the number of inspectors,"
Mr. Worona said. "One
truck driver complained
because he had to wait over
one hour. They should hire
more inspectors."
One truck driver took the
time to tell two of Mr.
Worona's children what a
driver should be doing to

Rougemount Drive.
While council members agreed on
the types of uses for the property
Monday night, they disagreed on bow
the development of the site should pro-

As a result, a request for a three-year
temporary zoning bylaw which would
have allowed for a Montessori school

north of the Rouge Hill Public Library,
was defeated by council. A motion for a
permanent zoning change to allow
development to go ahead suffered a
similar fate.
Ward 1 regional councillor Maurice

Pickering planners aim for varied downtown core
FROM PAGE 1
Pickering Civic Complex and Central
Library will be used as a foundation
to attract other elements of a "true"
downtown, which could include a
theatre and office buildings.
The Town's ultimate goal is to
provide a variety of activities and
uses in the downtown area to serve
all residents,
business people
and visitors.
"Pickering is
getting a real life
of its own. The
more you look at
where we want
to locate (devel-
opment), the
more you realize
you want to con-
centrate them
(in) the down-
town," he says.
Planners
believe the
future downtown
core must
include a num-
ber of key ele-
ments to make it
user-friendly for
members of the
public.
T h o s e
include:
O public
spaces for civic,
ceremonial and
recreational
activities and
functions.
0 routes for
pedestrians,
cyclists and tran-
sit buses con-
necting the pub-
lic open spaces.
O landmark
features, includ-
ing public art
that strengthens
the identity for
the downtown.
Town plan-
ners have drafted
some terms of
reference to
serve as guide-
lines for a
Downtown
Design Study, to
provide a future
vision for the
downtown core,
which is bound-
ed by Kingston
Road on the
north, a major
Hydro corridor
on the east,
Hwy. 401 on the
south and Pine
Creek on the
west.
A new design
and land -use
study for the
downtown core
could cost tax-
payers between
$25,000 and
$30,000.
The study will
review current
uses for the land,
as well as future
development
applications
which will have
ma or impact
I
on how the downtown develops.
The study's secondary focus will
include nearby developments which
have a close relationship to the
downtown, such as the Metro East
Trade Centre.
The Town will approach major
landowners in the study area for
funding in phase two of the study,

Easter baskets
The Easter Bunny should be making his way
toward your home in the next 24 hours. And, while
hi: basket will be brimming with all the dietary
excesses of the season, there are people in our com-
munities -- too many people -- whose homes will be
missed.
Those are the people both the Salvation Army and
the St. Paul's -On -The -Hill Community Food Bank
hope to reach this week with your help. There's still
time today to pack up some of extras you might have
in your kitchen cupboard or pantry for those who are
less fortunate.
And, the Easter season for them can mean not a
basket filled with treats, but one filled with basic food
necessities to help them through a lean period.
It doesn't take much; you can simply drop off a
bag of groceries at Ajax and Pickering fire halls or
some of the local grocery stores. From there, your
donations will be picked up and distributed to feed
the people who need it. But it's not a handout, it's a
hand up. Your generosity can also help stock the
shelves at the food banks.
Ajax and Pickering has shown in the past that its
benevolence, its compassion for others, its belief in
community is deeply held by its citizens. Through
your donations, you can be the Easter bunny to a
needy family this weekend. You can share, just a lit-
tle, and it will go a long way.
The local groups behind these food drives deserve
both a pat on the back and the efforts of area citizens
to make their work succeed.
Because, when you look at it closely enough
you'll find one constant and undeniable truth: We're
all in this together.

Airport would provide prosperity in the future
To the editor.
I had to write down my feel-
ings on the issue on your front
page on March 26.
Yes, 1 have always been in
favor of the Pickering
International Airport, totally
funded and managed by the pri-
vate sector and not our federal
and provincial governments.
Fred Beer and supporters
were, and still are, out in left
field on their anti -airport iobby-
ing. It's a shame some people are
so short of vision and selfish that
they fail to see a gold
nity which would
many.
Having an interna 'ora arrport
at our doorstep has, by far,
greater positive advantages than
shortcomings.
First and foremost, jobs would
be created with a choice in work
preference! Yes, real opportuni-
ties for our children and future
generations.
Durham Region continues to
reek with welfare. You name it
and you can be sure we collec-
tively subsidize it.
Our children's future cannot
rely on government handouts.
We must take charge to look
after our own or we shall never
clear our national and provincial
debt.
I don't wish to see my chil-
dren go miles away for work. I
believe all parents want to offer
our young adults some assurance
of job availability after finishing
school.
Also, the airport would help
promote a stable, steady equity
increase on our family residence
for an assured retirement cash
flow.
Durham Region needs growth
and, at present, Durham has a
long way to go on job creativity.
Work is crucial for self-reliance.
Most residents in the proposed
airport lands are professional
and, as such, would have a much
easier time of relocating, should
they desire to do so.
It's all well and good to fight
against ideas which inflict sor-
V FISHING DISPUTE
row, pain and hunger, but asinine
to fight against an idea which
could guarantee prosperity in a
tough economic climate.
So, Mr. Beer, open your mind
and your eyes.
Think and plan for your chil-
dren and for following genera-
tions.

.•°'" A turbot tune for Tobin
To the editor:
(A poem about the turbot wars, sung to the twee of
Gilligan's IskL"
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a Spanish ship,
That started from a Spanish port,
Aboard the Estai ship.
The mate was a mighty Armada man,
The skipper brave and sure,
16 trawlers went on a fishing trip,
For a 200 -mile tour,
A 200 -mile tour.
The Navy started getting rough,
The Spanish ship was shot, .
If not for the courage of Brian Tobin,
The turbot would be lost,
The turbot would be lost.
The Spanish crew woke up the very next day,
In some uncharted Newfie jail,
With the dock hands, the captain too,
The Ambassador and his wife,
The kitchen cook,
The fishing crew and all of their nets,
Here in New -found -land

It's time to get

Golfers of all

can find a lay -out
that will suit both
their game and

which is why the
sport has managed
to continue to
grow despite tough
economic times.
Private golf
clubs used to dom-
inate the golfing
map across the
province. But in
recent vears the
trena is going
more towards pub-
lic courses, or at
least towards more
liberal membership
requirements at
most private clubs.
That means a
better choice for
golfers, with more
attractive member-
ship packages and
a better choice
(and better quali-
ty), of public facili-
ties now available.
Many private
clubs have decided
to take on more
corporate events
and outside touma-
ments, and some
have even opened
up their courses to
the public on a
part-time basis,
with specific tee -
off times for non
members.
A trend in the
industry (and it's a
definite trend in
Durham as well),
is towards the

more usual golfer,

sometimes be

Brian Fordham Sealing and
Patching: Your Asphalt Specialist
.
Visit Brian at the Oshawa Home Show at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium from
April 20 to 23 and at the Ajax Home Show at the Pickering Village Arena
from April 28 to 30.
The look of your home is
complimented by a freshly paved
driveway. However, with time, it becomes
a cracked, pitted, fading eyesore. That's
when you call Brian Fordham Sealing
and Patching, your asphalt specialist.
Three years in the business, Brian
attributes his success to top of the line
products and dedication to Customer
Satisfaction, this means you'll see Brian
for many more years. His services are
tailored to meet the needs of the
residential, commercial, or heavy industry
property owner. Each job, regardless of
size, is treated as if it was his own
property he was working on.
When asked about the little things,
Brian responded with "Neat and tidy, we
trim the edges around your driveway,
clean away any debris and use shields to
avoid unsightly overspray. I'm my own
worse critic, I have to be happy before I
would ask you to be. That's pride and the
sign at each job tells people how proud 1
am of my work."
What about product quality? Brian is
always looking at new products offering
his customers the best. That's an
"Environmentally Friendly" acrylic sealer
for residential property.
"The customer wins with this
product," says Brian. "It won't breakdown
and track into the house when exposed to
automotive fluids, and any leak can be
cleaned up with a little hot/soapy water
and the drying time is only about 30
minutes."
Need more? Brian offers rubberized
crack filling and hot asphalt patch work.
His patch work isn't just a little asphalt
placed over the damaged area. The
damaged area is cut out, filled with hot
asphalt from a heated storage unit, and
mechanically pressed into place.
Brian can even offer professional line
marking for commercial or industrial
property. Unlike others, Brian sprays 100
per cent paint so his work won't fade away
in the first year. Also, no thinners means
Brian can spray lines inside youfr
warehouse or factory.
You can meet Brian at the Oshawa
Home Show, Oshawa Civic Auditorium
between April 20 to 23, or at the Ajax
Home Show, Pickering Village Arena,
April 28 to 30. If you can't make it to the
show, feel free to call Brian at 725-7443.

KEEP YOUR COOL IF
YOU LOSE YOUR CARDS
Whoever said "time is money" might have been
thinking of credit cards - and what it can mean if
you lose them. I thought of this not long ago
when a very anxious customer came in to tell us
that her purse had disappeared in a restaurant
where she was having lunch. It had all her cash,
credit and charge cards in it.
In the heat of the moment, we went to work to
notify MasterCard immediately and to cancel and
replace her automated banking card. But, our
customer had no list of her other cards or
numbers to call to notify them of the loss.
As we presented her with her new banking
card, it seemed a good time to offer some helpful
advice that would remove some of the stress
should she ever lose her cards again. There are
now, a number of companies offering "card
registration" service which will take the worry
out of this trying experience.
Your Credit Card Issuer
Now, nearly all credit and charge card issuers
such as MasterCard, Visa or American Express,
make card registration service available to their
cardholders. So do department store and oil
company credit cards. And, if you are a member
of an organization carrying affinity cards such as
MasterCard or Visa, you may receive card
registration service free of charge as part of your
membership. You might also note that the
Canadian Automobile Association, as part of its
membership package, also offers a card
registration service.
Whether for a yearly fee or as part of a
membership package, if your cards are stolen,
you need only make one call to the card
registration service number. From there, the
service will contact all the card issuers on your
list and arrange to have replacement cards
prepared and sent to you.
Not only will this service protect you against
liability by notifying card issuers within the usual
twenty -four-hour time limit, but you will get
quick action on replacement of your cards
without having your life totally disrupted by the
i loss. It's important to note that this service
applies only to cards where there is the risk of
loss of funds. For your own records you should
also make a list of government -administered
cards such as your social insurance and
- provincial health plan card. Losing these can also
be a great inconvenience.
61wp Around <.
A card registration service will generally offer
Assistance locally, nationally or internationally
via a 24-hour toll-free hot line seven days a'
week. So, whether you're stranded in Madrid or
Montreal or Morden, Manitoba, help can be on
the way in minutes. Prices vary among packages
' of service as do add-on services so it's wise to
b shop and decide which is the best buy for you.
Ask the issuer of your card about their service
and how to enrol.
Additional card registration services could
include an advance of emergency cash if you are
stranded, or arranging with major card issuers to
,courier a new card to you wherever you happen
to be. Other services may include change -of -
address notification if you move or stickers for
all your cards warning prospective fraudulent
users of the risk of quick detection.
Lucky This Time
As for our customer, just after we had enrolled

her for credit card registration service, the head
waiter from the restaurant called. He had found
her purse. It seems that while moving the couple
next to her to another table, he mistakenly moved
our customer's bag with them. So, it was a happy
ending - especially happy, because we introduced
this customer to a service that she should not be
without.
