The newsletter was sent to i all homes in the riding — about 56,()1X) — but only about 720, or one per cent, were returned. Mr. Mc Teague says national policies are set on polls o(ahx)ut 1,51)1) people. "One per cent of the riding responding isn't a heavy number, but it*s not insignificant. lt*s indicative of the rest of the riding," he says. Mr. Sellers, a member of the Pickering Rod and Gun Club and the Canadians for Crime Control, says it's "absolutely not true" that the newsletter was sent to all homes. There are 17 shooting clubs in Durham and "1 haven't heard from one person (with a club) about this'ques- tionnaire. Legitimate gun owners sup- Dan port increased McTeague sentences for criminals using firearms, Mr. Sellers says, but the four-year mandatory sentence only applies to 10 crimes and murder isn't one of them. Asking if people favor restrictions on handguns and military -assault weapons is a "media -type 'question" because the guns are already restrict- ed, Mr. Sellers says. Federal Justice Minister Allan Rock says a national gun registry system would cost about $85 million, but Mr. Sellers claims government estimates indicate it could cont S 1.4 billion to set up and run. "Registration wouldn't have stopped any of thane crimes, the mur- ders of Roger Pardy, Kenneth Thomas or :Norman Chow. Registration is after the fact," he says. Mr. Pardy was murdered during it robbery of his Oshawa sporting goods store last near and Mr. Thomas is believed to have been killed by the suspects involved in that case. Mr. Chow was shot during a robbery at an Ajax gun range. Mr. Sellers says. "There are seven million firearm owners in Canada. When you factor in their families, a lot of Canadians are exposed to firearms." New Durham 40 airline cleared for take -off By Brad Reaunre IRTMAM STAFF DURHAM - Air Oshawa has been cleared for take off. A local group of investors won a bid to provide passen- ger airline service from Oshawa beginning this sum- mer. The airline expects to service to Montreal, Ottawa and Windsor. In addition they are actively seeking connections to several American air hubs, such as Boston, Buffalo and Pittsburgh. The airline will bring with it 92 jobs to Oshawa, according to spokesman Steve Gilchrist. The City has agreed to maintain Air Oshawa's exclusive use of the Oshawa Airport facility as long as the airline satisfies conditions of their agreements. A second company, from Texooto, was in the bidding to operate a silindw service, though thew puposd mchhd- ed smaller airplanes. "Any company starting with akpime:s as big as Dash 8s is shooting itself in the foot," said competing com- pany principal Nieram Arieli. Air Oshawa will lease administration, man- agement facilities and bag- gage check spaces at the City -owned terminal. In addition, Air Oshawa has agreed to build an air- craft maintenance facility on leased land on the north side of the airfield within two years of the start of opera- tions. .We are designed to expand," said Mr. Gilchrist. .We will actively pursue intoes into the United States. We will have a tremendous advantage over Pearson for people in this area who want to travel east." " ILere are 700,000 people in Durham or who drive through Durham on their way to Pearson, who will be better served by this ser- vice," Mr. Gilchrist said. "When Hwy. 407 is com- pleted, there will be 100,000 more people from the Markham area with easier access to Oshawa than Peai a ." Cops warn of bank transaction scam DURHAM — Area business people should be wary of letters from individuals in foreign coun- tries asking for help transferring money into bank accounts in Canada. Durham Regional Police warn. Staff Sergeant Sandy Ryrie says police have received several reports of local business people receiving letters from Lagos, Nigeria asking for assistance in mov- ing millions of dollars into their accounts in Canada in the past Vcrfr. Business people are being offered up to 40 per cent in commission for their services. One Brooklin company received a letter offering 30 -per cent com- mission and 10 per cent for expenses to help a Lagos. Nigeria doctor transfer $38.5 million U.S. into its account. The letter also asks for the com- pany's bank infor- mation, including account number, invoices and let - "Members of the public, and in particular business people, should be wary of these let- ters and in doing business with peo- ple they don't know," says Staff Sgt. Ryrie. Another exam- ple of how local individuals are being duped is an ongoing phone scam originating in Montreal, Staff Sgt. Ryrie says. The victims, usually elderly people, are told they have won an expensive item like a car or boat and must pay a fee of between $600 and $4,000 in order to collect their prize. No, the signs haven't popped up on boulevards and lawns yet, but the electioneering has begun. ®r- N Durham Region has seen that Premier Bob Rae has his election face on. In the last week his government has handed out more than $100 mil - tion nor projects to e area. There are reports also that additional funding 1 is headed to the region for hospital services and y senior citizens, and you can expect even more J_ NDP representation at these announcements. In Oshawa, the New Democrats are clearly marking their territory, a socialist stronghold for the foundering party. Why else would Premier Rae be dropping all this money on Durham all of ° a sudden? QN' 3Durham is grateful, and the recipients of the grants must be ecstatic, but is it a rase of offering too little, too late. Eric Nagler, who's delighted children in concert and on television as a regular perforrner on Sharon. LALs and Bram's Elephant Show and on his own sitcom Eric's World. brings his unique brand of interactive music to Pine Ridge Secondary School Thursday. March 23 at 7 p.m. The bearded musician who uses everything from a banjo to a carpenter's saw to make music, will appear in Pickering as part of Project ASAP (Assist School Art% Programs) which. through his concerts, raises funds to enable schools to bring arts performers into their midst. A portion of the proceeds from the March 23 show goes to Fairport Beach Public School. In a telephone interview from his Sbelbtune. Ont. area home. Nagler says the seed to start Project ASAP was planted three years ago after reading a nlewspapt:r article which reported fund- ing for the arts in sdhools was declining. "I felt particularly concerned and upset by that." be says. "As a performer wbo started out playing in schools I know bow important it is to give cultur- al experiences to our kids. When every- thing is going a mile a minute. it's important to hang on to our culture and tradition. or we'll lose our identity ' Acting on his convictions, Project ASAP was born. While there were a few glitches in the beginning (one school used its proceeds to purchase bockry jacket.), Nagler says the fund- raising venture has proved useful to sctxx)L. acro%s the counay. "It's been highly successful. I've been happy with it. educatdxti have been happy with it as well. ICs also an oppor- tunity for me to go to small ccxnmuru- ties acid play." be says. Besides his accomplishments on the small screen. Nagler has recorded five popular children's albums, his latest effort being the Eric's World Record released last year. Ile's also been on the concert trail for most of his 20 vears as a children's entertainer. Happily, he has never tired of the genie. Children's music "has been an ever expanding and ever exciting fiebd," he says. ''Ibe live aspects of it are so rich and full of life that I could never tine of it. My songs are the vehicles for me having a musical communication with the atxliernce .. In addition to concerts for Project ASAP, Nagler is currently working on a CD-ROM game involving making tmusic. He's also in the process of working on a compilation album and may possi- bly be filming a television special in the near future. Nagler will be signing autographs, beginning at I p.m. on Saturday at Mastermind Educational in the Pickering Town Centre's lower level. Fifth -place finishers during the regular season, the Monarchs capped off a near - perfect post -season with a hard-earned 3-2 victory over the Denis O'Connor Chargers in the third -and -deciding game in the best -of -three final series. The contest was played at the Ajax Community Centre arena Tuesday afternoon. .We definitely peaked at the right time," says an elated St. Mary coach Mike O'Brien. "It's very exciting and the kids are very excited. It was just a matter of the guys believing in themselves. They rose to the occasion when they needed to. The defensive style of hockey which served the Monarchs well all season was the prime reason the club captured the LOSSA title. That, and solid goaltending from Kelly Roberts, who made some key saves when called upon. "One of the things that kept us in it was our defensive hockey," says O'Brien. By Bev McFarlane • a 2Y9109w lBB1 ■ i Spring is just around the corner, so staff at Durham Lawn Equipment are ready to help you get ready for your spring clean- up days. And if you're like most garden enthusiasts, you soon won't be able to resist the urge to start getting your lawn mower tuned for the season. Durham Lawn Equipment not only sells, it also services lawnmowers. As owner Peter Berry says, proper lawn motor maintenance is essential to doing a good job throughout the entire season. According to Peter, now is a good time to get ahead of the crowd, to have a mower tune-up. The South Ajax firm sells top quality mowers, as well as trimmers, leaf chippers, rototillers, shredders, chainsaws, and most equipment associated with lawn care. It is also well known for its sales and service of snowblowers. Ariens, Toro and Gravely are among the top selling lawnmowers sold at this local business. These, and other brands are also serviced by the firm, whose after-sales assistance is an important aspect of the business, according to Peter. Peter adds that a little prevention is the best remedy to ensure long life for such hard-working equipment. All repairs are done on the premises. It's also worth noting that both residential and commercial clients receive the very best in personalized attention at Durham Lawn Equipment. Whether your treed is for new lawn care equipment, or you need to service some that you already own, call or visit Durham Lawn Equipment to learn about their attractive retail prices and service rates. I"S PTCW HOmCm OLMUS 11Mt:erf 40Px*m Choose your builder carefully Many consumers become embroiled in the home buying frenzy that can overtake new home buyers. The purchase of a house is a significant investment requiring unhurried homework and the first and most important step a new home buyer can take is choosing a reputable builder. The Ontario New Home Warranty Program (ONHWP) defines a reputable builder as one who registers with ONHWP and enrolls every unit. A reputable builder oversees all the stages of construction and makes every effort to ensure a home buyer receives a home that is free of defects. The consumer should avoid rogue builders who try to circumvent ONHWR Although these builders are a minority, their unwillingness to adhere to legislation should send loud warning signals to consumers. A home built by an unregistered builder would still be protected by warranty but there would be fewer safeguards involving good after-sales service and receiving accurate warranty information. Locating a builder who has built both good houses and a reliable reputation begins by consulting the Home Buyer's Guide to After Sales Service. A free, annually updated publication compiled by ONHWP. the Guide rates several thousand builders on their after sale service and provides quick. alphabetical ized listings for home buyers to use as reference as they visit the subdivisions where they prefer to live. Checking out a builder's reputation is as simple as knocking on a door. New homeowners are normally very willing to crow or complain about their choice of a builder. These homeowners are living with the builders' successes and failures. The homeowners' experiences give insights into a builder's workmanship and after sales service. Discovering how quickly and efficiently a builder completed repairs should provide invaluable, first-hand information to prospective home buyers who want to make a wise decision. Once new home buyers begin their crucial research they quickly realize the quality of a home correlates to the quality of its builder. A builder should be willing to divulge where previous projects and homes are located and remain helpful to the home buyer who shows an interest in owning a well built home. A builder should also have a constantly evolving knowledge of the construction industry and be able to discuss housing needs with a neophyte home buyer. Single family homes are also . .• .ice .. .. BY AUBREY LEBLANC Ideally, the home buyer wants a builder who treats the Ontario Building Code as a minimum of construction standard while routinely going over and above the requirements. One method of determining the work ethic of a builder is to solicit comments from present owners, family and friends who have recently purchased a home. Compare the after sales service programs available from builders. Three and six month follow-up inspections and five year guarantees on materials and workmanship are some examples of after sales service packages offered by some builders. These after sales guarantees are a sign of reputable builders who are confident about their work. Local home builders' associations. bank and trust company seminars are another excellent source of information to the home buying public. Practical workshops on how to buy a new home, the importance of the pre -delivery inspection and how to maintain a new home are often advertised. Take the opportunity to have all your home buying questions answered by various experts in the home building industry. The marketplace can seem like a labyrinth of options to a new home buyer. Consumers should make every effort to attend information evenings and conduct their own inquiries to de- mystify the home buying process. Since purchasing a home is a major expense, consumers should never feel rushed into a decision when looking for a new home. Take the time to assess your needs against your wants. A room - by -room check list of your must have's and wants establishes your priorities. Educated consumers make sound decisions that they can live with. Ontario New Home Warranty Program information sheet F a The Government of Ontario passed the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act in 1976 making the then existing voluntary warranty program mandatory and ensuring that every new home and condominium unit built for sale in Ontario is covered by warranty. 0 The Ontario New Home Warranty Program is the only mandatory new home warranty program in Canada and one of the very few in the world. O The Ontario New Home Warranty Program was established as an independent, non-profit corporation to protect consumers by administering and enforcing the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act. D The goals of the Ontario New Home Warranty Program also include regulation of builders to ensure they comply with the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act. 0 Since it was established, the Ontario New Home Warranty Program has provided protection to more than 600,000 new homes in Ontario. Currently, more than 300,000 homes are covered. O Over the years, the Ontario New Home Warranty Program has expanded and enhanced its coverage. It has introduced the Home Builder's Guide to After Sales Service (a builder rating program), established the Ernest Assaly Award to annually recognize the province's best builder for after sales service and published the Code and Construction Guide to Housing. Before signing on the dotted line, however, you should do some research. This means contacting the Toronto Home Builders' Association for the names of builders in the greater Metro area. It also means visiting open houses and model homes with your list of must -haves versus nice -to -haves in hand, always balancing you needs and desires with your financial resources. Once you have decided on a builder and home style, you must then decide on the features that will ultimately result in your own unique home. That is why it is so important you select a professional builder, one who will help to make the entire process, from first offer to celebrating your first anniversary in your new home, run as smoothly and trouble-free as possible. Your and your professional builder will share a very important goal — making sure you will enjoy your new home long after you receive the keys to the front door. Constructing a house is a complex process that demands expert planning, knowledge of municipal bylaws and regulations. careful scheduling and skilled co-ordination by an experienced builder. A typical house contains more than 3.000 parts, all of which must be assembled carefully and in sequence. It takes approximately 30 different subtrades to carry out this work, from framers to roofers to finishing carpenters, all of whom must arrive at the building site in the right order at the right time. In fact, there are 109 workers involved in the construction of a new single-family home. The professional home builder stands at the centre of this process as the driving force in getting together materials, labor and information, guiding the project through a schedule and packaging everything into an attractive quality product that will provide you, the home owner, with years of comfort and pleasure. Establishing a good working relationship with your builder at the outset will help both of you throughout the construction process. Find out who your ongoing contact will be. Your builder may have a representative such as a salesperson who is responsible for customer relations and who will be available for consultation during the actual construction of your home. If desired, your builder can provide you with information about financing your new home. Some builders arrange mortgages in order to facilitate the sale and make the purchasing process as easy as possible. Others can make suitable recommendations to their customers based on long-standing working relationships with one or several lending institutions in the community. Your builder may also be able to give you useful advice if you have to sell your existing home in order to buy a new home. Most builders have cultivated a good business relationship with resale brokers in the community. Before work can begin, your builder will need a firm offer that includes final specification of all features, options and changes. This requires you to consider your needs and wants carefully in light of the features and options offered by the builder. Most builders offer a number of choices for their standard finishing products, like color of the carpeting and style -of kitchen and bathroom tiles. Many builders also have full inventory of optional items such as upgraded kitchen cupboards and flooring. "Environmentally friendly option packages" are rapidly growing in popularity as more home buyers want to include energy- and water -conserving 'technology in their new home. Low -flow showerheads .and toilets, upgraded heating systems, high- performance windows, "recycling stations" in the kitchen and backyard composters help to reduce the use of resources and benefit the environment. Don't hesitate to discuss your concerns and questions with your builder who will be able to assist you in making the right decisions for your home. Your builder will keep a record on file of aq the selections you make. Nothing is left to chance! During construction of your home, you may be asked to make a few additional decisions, such as placement of electrical outlets. Be sure to give each matter adequate consideration, but don't delay unnecessarily or the schedule for the entire project may be affected. Try to stick to choices you made in the beginning. In many cases, the materials you select are ordered immediately to ensure delivery on time. Before requesting changes during construction, discuss the implications with your builder. Are your new choices readily available? How much time will you lose? How does the change affect the scheduling of subtrades? Your move -in date? And, finally, what is the cost of the suggested change? If the change is important to you ane you accept the implications, your builder will arrange tc make the change. Changes can often be accommodated. since your builder wants you to feel happy with your new home and satisfied with the service you receive. As construction heads into the final stages, it is important to maintain close contact with your builder until final closing. Mon o>r "smg=sl*o b drop utbmd nia. E i O.E. •~daft NO S4. PAGE a 21EW HODS a INTERIORS, 1995 N'ew Homes s=ad I M*.4"Aors Landscaping adds value to your home Start planning garden now: say experts With spring not far away, it is time to start thinking about landscaping your home. And. when it comes to landscaping especially a new home, the best advice is 'be prepared." Toronto Home Builders' Association member Alexander Budrevic. a leading landscape architect and president of his own landscaping firm, says new homes offer distinct advantages when it comes to planning your property's look. "Owning a new home enables you to design and implement your landscaping requirements to suit your particular lifestyle and taste," Budrevic says. "You don't have to cope with an existing garden that was designed for someone else." Budrevic suggests new home buyers negotiate a landscaping allowance with builders since features such as walks to both front and rear entrances and sod in both yards are often limited. Although a complete landscaping project may be financially impossible to undertake at one time, Budrevic recommends homeowners devise an entire plan to include patios, planting beds, shade trees. flower gardens, play areas and, perhaps, a swimming pool. A master plan means the finished product will be cohesive, he says. "Do the plan for your total property even if you can't afford to do everything at once," Budrevic says. "It is much more economical to spend extra time and effort in proper planning that to correct mistakes after the work and money is spent in your ,garden. " Proper grading of the property is vital to landscaping projects, he says. To avoid wet basements and puddles in the lawn, all hard surfaces such as patios, driveways and walks should slope at least one per cent away from the building. Lawn areas and planting beds should slope two per cent away, he adds, and remember not to block or alter existing municipal drainage plans. For patio construction, a 12'X12* area should suffice for the placement of outdoor garden furniture, Budrevic says. As well, paving materials may consist of reinforced concrete, precast concrete slabs, interlocking stones. flagstones or similar hard surface supplies that complement existing building :features. If possible, select a new home with a southern backyard so as to be exposed to more sun for the proper cultivation of grass, he says. And select planting material with future maintenance in mind, he adds. "Don't plant large flower beds or construct waterfalls, fountains or ponds if you can't properly maintain them or hire someone to look after them," :Budrevic says. Shrubs and trees eventually mature, therefore it is important to know their ultimate size beforehand, he adds. Budrevic recommends selecting planting material for all seasons, so as to have year-round color in the garden. Flowering shrubs are beautiful in both spring and early summer, he says. while some shrubs flower in late summer and the fall. While a colorful garden is pleasing, a healthy one is preferable, Budrevic says. In most new properties, he suggests homeowners prepare planting beds with additional topsoil consisting of 18 inches of sandy loam for flower beds, 24 inches of sandy loam and topsoil for vegetable gardens. "Well-planned and executed landscaping will add a great deal to the enjoyment and value of you new home, and will also increase the resale price of your Lproperty as it matures," Budrevic says. Some of the most often asked questions are: Which colors work together? Is aubergine in or out? Why does the paint on the wall never look like the paint in the can? How can I use color to make a room appear larger/smaller/brighter/cosier? For all those people who think a complementary color is a free can of paint, Color: A Stroke of Brilliance should help clarify a few things. This lavishly illustrated book, written by Leslie Harrington and published by B & E Publications of Mississauga, demystifies the whole mystery surrounding color. Energy tips There are a few things you can do to conserve energy. Here is a list of 20 things you can do to save energy and you hard-earned dollars. 1) Raise your air-conditioning thermostat in the summer. For each degree higher, you'll cut your energy use by eight per cent. 2) Turn off incandescent lights when you are not using them, especially in the summer when they produce unwanted heat. 3) Use low -wattage light bulbs in halls and other places where no close-up tasks occur. However using a single, high -wattage bulb is more cost- efficient than using two lower -wattage bulbs. 4) Long -life light bulbs usually use more electricity than regular bulbs of the same wattage. Use long - life bulbs only in locations where access is difficult. 5) Use high -efficiency light bulbs in your outside security lights. Put them on a time or photoelectric switch. 6) Light only the specific area where you are working. 7) Grime from cooking, smoking and dust can dirty a light bulb and reduce the light it puts out. Inspect and clean bulbs regularly. 8) Avoid checking on food while it cooks. Each time you open your oven door, 25 per cent of the heat is lost. 9) Cooking in oven -safe glass or ceramic pans allows you to lower your oven temperature 25 degrees from what the recipe calls for. 10) In an electric oven, turn off your oven 15 minutes before the end of the cooking time. The remaining heat will finish the job if you don't open the oven door. 10 Partially thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator before cooking them. In many cases, thawing foods lets you cut the cooking time by one third. 12) Use the automatic cycle on your clothes dryer. 13) Run your garbage disposal with cold water. 14) Use warm or cold water for washing clothes and always use a cold rinse. You also save more money by running full washer bods. 15) Keep heating and air conditioning filters clean. It's difficult to force air through dirty filters. 16) Use fans instead of air conditioning for coding whenever you can. Fans use only about 10 per cent of the energy air conditioners do. 17) Weatherstrip all doors and windows, even those in rooms you are not using. 18) Replace your old thermostat with a newer clock model. These devices can be set to automatically lower your home's temperature at bedtime and raise it again in the morning. 19) Keep your fireplace damper closed when the fireplace isn't being used. If you have glass them losed as well. 20)Scheduledoom, maanntecnance checkups for your heating and cooling system. By keeping your system in optimal working condition, you'll not only reduce energy costs. but also extend its service life. Color: A Stroke of Brilliance starts with color psychology — the basic reactions which everyone has to certain colors and why. Then, the book shows how this new-found knowledge can be used to create rooms treatments that are more functional, more comfortable and longer lasting. Harrington is a qualified designer who has made color her specialty. She also has a close understanding of the needs of do-it-yourself home decorators and brings to this book a grew deal of down-home practical experience that can help anyone do a better job of creating a unique home environment. Throughout the book. Harrington fully illustrates her suggestions — like a foolproof way of starting a color scheme. "Search through your belongings for something with the colors you really like — it may be a painting, a scarf, carpet or a set of pattern drapes," she says. "If you like the way the colors work together in your `inspiration piece,' you'll like them in the room." The next step is to acquire sample paint chips that match each color in your chosen piece as an aid in selecting wallpaper, carpet and other furnishings. Color: A Stroke of Brilliance explains how colors work together and can be applied to correct design defects, to highlight treasured possessions. to create an atmosphere appropriate to the way the room will be use and, even, to make the room appear larger or smaller than it really is. It also shows how to create dozens of room treatments based on the principles of color psychology. PP- UNDANCE EXECUTIVE HOMES One of the reasons you should consider a City Homes is famous for!
