Canada Ganes will ship $100 million worth of the little round paper discs in 1995, with a retail value twice that figure, says Michael Albert, vice-president of sales and marketing. Canada Games is the Canadian licensee for The World POG Foderaticn, head- quartded in California. POGs may seem like a new fas- cinationbut they bave been around since the 1920¢, before there wee TVs, CD players and video games — back to when milk and fruit juices were sold in glass bottles sealed with small wax -coated card- board discs. Back then, lads would collect them and invent simple "milkcap" games that everyone could play. Over a span of three decades, the minocaps were especially popular in Hawaii. But with the introduction of new disposable containers, the phenomena faded. That is, until 1991 when a teacher named Biossom Galbiso wen in search of the milkcaps she had played with as a child so she could share the games with her students. After a long search, she located the caps at Haleakala Dairy, atop a fent drink called POG - Passionfi ri Orange and Guava Hence, the name. Within 18 months, POGs had become so popular, two billion had been distributed throughout the Hawaiian Islands — an estimated 1,300 for every hamar being, says Mr. Albert. Apply the same ratio to the population of North America, and -you'd break the computer". Recognizing a big moneymaker, the phenomena attracted the atten- tion of many multi -national corpo- rations. But the dairy owner wasn't interested in selling the licensing rights to POG caps. Then along came Allan Rypinski, an American who had just sold his company, Armor -All, for S75 million. Instead of negotiating for the licensing rights, he bought the dairy. Then he headed back to California where be formed the World POG Federation. POG milkcaps were introduced to Canada in September, 1994, and Canada Games began shipping to retailers in November. The frenzy hasn't even begun, says Mr. Albert. "As soon as the sen starts to shine, it's going to be absolutely nuay" The games usually consist of a stack of milkcaps and a heavier disc called a kini (Hawaiian for 'king') or stammer. The kini is thrown on the top of the stack, and the object of the game is to see bow many POGs can be flipped over. "It's like flat marbles," Mr. Albert notes. The World POG Federation has also come out with POG: The Game, which includes a booklet entitled What Part of POG Don't You Understand?. " A special gift While area hospitals report varying levels of blood supplies, our regional stock is critically low. The Central Ontario Blood Centre, along with the Canadian Red Cross, is calling on residents to donate the gift of life before the situation becomes worse. Already, the centre has had to restrict some hospital orders so as to maintain a regional emer- gency stock for the area stretching from Oakville in the west to Napanee in the east and north to Huntsville. Community offices of the Red Cross call for blood on a regular basis. Too often, some of us don't get around to taking time out of our busy schedules to make a trip to the local blood donor clinic. Others might harbor irrational fears of somehow contaminating their own blood, despite the assur- ances of medical science. This season, according to officials, colds and flu have also kept donors away. And longer waiting periods at clinics, necessary because of today's more stringent screening process. have discouraged others. But consider this: the shortage of blood could suddenly become very important to you if you or someone you care about suddenly needs an emer- gency transfusion. It could also get to the point of affecting patients if non -emergency surgeries have to be postponed. Donations are solicitied every day from dozens of deserving organizations. But the gift of blood costs you nothing but time and could pay substantial dividends directly back to you. At the very least, you'll know you've helped save someone's life. And that is no small donation. Mr. McTeague", Mr. Sellers has left out several vital elements — unfor- unmiely, they involve the very facts he would like to debate. First, Mr. Sellers should have been aware why murder is not included among the 10 violent offeooes listed an Bill C-68. The new Stan control legislation provides for minimum mandatory sentences of four years imprisonment when a firearm is used in the commission of specifically identified violent PUD offences. Murder is not included because the existing penalty for this crime is far more serious than a mandatory four-year jail term. Secondly. Mr. Sellers obviously didn't do his homework when it comes to Bill C-236. That is my Private Member's Bill on reforming MP pensions. It may come as a shock to Mr. Sellers that I have opted out of the pension scheme offered in the new proposals. Instead of concerning himself with MP pensions, Mr. Sellers should have focused his study on Bill C-226, a bill conce=rning manda- lory 25 -year prison terms. without parole, for anyone convicted of mur- der. If he had researched this bill, Mr. Sellers would have found that a was indeed drawn for debate in the Hoose. Moreover, on Dec. 13, 1994, I joined others to vote in favor of its passage at second reading. Finally, as far as debating Mr. Sellers, I would inform him of one more fact. Out of 726 responses to date from a questionnaire which I included in one of my reports to con- stituents of Ontario Riding, 65 per cent of respondees favored univer- sal firearm registration. In addition Wr TI 6o To SqoOL, I BWIIS HqT, • HEREs You WWEIi WEAR YOUR HAT. ► 73 per cent favored further restric- tions on handguns and military assault weapons; 75 per cent favored tighter restrictions on the sale of ammunition; 93 per cent said they favored increased border controls to combat gun smuggling; and 96 per cent favored tougher punishments far Stn -created crinnes As Bill C-68 contains measures which have the support of the vast majority of my coastiments, I will respect their wishes and vote for this bill. Durham is re -applying for a grant under the Municipal Assistance Program (MAP), which is administered by the Ontario Clean Water Agency. The agency had approved i giving Durham 511.5 million, but the Province held up the money until the Region had a water -conservation plan. If Durham gets 511.5 million, 58.82 million will be used to build the Ajax water plant and 54.68 million to start the water -conservation program. The S60 -million plant will provide water to Ajax and Pickering. Durham is waiting for final approval from provincial Environment Minister Bud Wildman before con- struction begins. Water levels of creeks and streams are expected to rise as a result of runoff from melting snow and precipitation. Localized flooding is also expect- ed when ice on streams and creeks begins to melt and break up. Icy, wet and slippery creek banks, combined with high flows and Cold- water temperatures, will make creek conditions very hazardous, accord- ing to a CLOCA release. Members of the public, and espe- cially small children, are advised to avoid these areas for the next few days. These days even a crystal ball might not help. One expert is predicting that there is still room for rates to drop. Another one thinks that they could skyrocket any day. I do know that whether you are contemplating buying your first home, or are about to renew your present mortgage, it does pay to shop around. There are some good options to consider that can help you cope with the uncertainties. A unique option offered by some financial institutions is a protected variable rate mortgage- "Variable" means that the interest rate charged on your mortgage can change, usually monthly, to correspond with the changes in the money market. "Protected- means that the mortgage also has a guaranteed maximum interest rate that is locked in for five years. You could say it's a chance to have the best of both worlds! On the one hand, you have the security of knowing that your mortgage rate will never exceed a predeterm rind rate and on the other hand, in a period of lower rates you also have the advantage of having your interest calculated on the variable trate. The variable interest raft on this type of mortgage is usually one percentage above the prevailing prime tate. So, if prime is six penxnt, the tate charged for dW month would be seven percent. So. how does this affect your payments? Your payments are based on the financial institution's five year fixed mortgage rate, (for example, 8.95%). and will be the same for the duration of the term. The interest you are paying is calculated once a month at the current rate, (for example 7%). The saving comes about this way: the difference between the actual mortgage payments and the interest at the variable rate, (that difference being 1.95% in this case), is applied to your principal each month. All mortgage holders that I know, want to pay off their mortgage as quickly as possible. On a $100,000 mortgage, amortized over twenty five years. you could save as much as $11,000 over a five year period. In fact. instead of the original twenty five years, your mortgage would be paid off in seventeen or eighteen years by taking advantage of a protected variable rate mortgage. Most of us have neither the time, nor the nerves, to monitor the rise and fall of interest rates. So, if you are looking for security and peace of mind, look into a protected variable rate mortgage. Shop around, ask questions, because features vary in different financial institutions. Make sure you find the plats that meets your comfort level. After all, it is yourmoirtSage! ►OHN ORT LAW 0MCI 30 Hunt SL, Ste. 1, Ajax L1 S 3M2 purchase - 5400 sale _ $350 refinancing $360 Plus G.S.T. and disbursements CALL 427=991 9 "PHONE FOR PRICES OUTSIDE OF DURHAM" r OME Only 2 left aBULDER 1p ! ceramics ttrouo" master on site with Jacuzri tub a seq. shower.
