For several years now, politicians at all levels of gov-
ernment have been making a lot of noise about cutting
fat from budgets, making do with less and fording cre-
ative solutions to ease the strain on taxpayers.

investors interested in stepping in and taking over ser-
vices currently provided by government. While there are
some services a municipality just won't want to give up,
there have been some good proposals made by investors
that result in a win-win situation for everyone. There's a
buck to be made by said investors, a money-losing pro-
gram taken off the shoulders of municipal taxpayers, and
a service provided to interested users. A rase in point
occurred in Pickering several years ago, when a private
fum took over the Town's recreational pottery classes,
renting space at the recreation cpmplex. The arrange-
ment provided customers for the business, revenue for
the Town, and gave residents the pottery classes that
might otherwise have been cancelled.
Loral goverrmnents do not run recreation programs
for profit; it's not unusual for sports facilities b operate
deeply in the red. It's expensive to build facilities and
expensive to run there. As a result, vowing mtniaipah-
ties are always short of recreational facilities, which are
filled to the rafters and booked b the limit.
Privatization provides an answer. An S18 -million
sports complex announced in Oshawa Friday is mother

MTRCA wants greenbacks
to keep Altona Forest green
PICKERING — The Metro Toronto and
Region Conservation Authority is looking for
$400,000 from the Region to buy a portion of
the Altona Forest in Pickering.
The 131 -acre forest in Pickering is bounded
roughly by Altona Road on the west, Sheppard
Avenue to the south, Rosebank Road on the east.

Buying the land, which will cost about $13.8
million, will save the environmentally -sensitive
area from residential development.
The Province gave the MTRCA S 10 million
to buy some of the land and Pickering has
chipped in $454,077. The MTRCA is also look-

chairperson for the Canadian

(CAMA), says the proposed $2 coin
will not have as significant an impact
as the public perceives.
The announcement of the new coin
was made during Paul Martin's federal
budget pregaaadou on Monday.
Mr. Fraser, who is also general
manger of Can Acceptors Canada,
says the concept of the $2 coin was
fast discussed in 1987.
"Yon would have to be blind not

are not going to have much buying
power in the fugue," he says. "Plethaps

to a fine art at a week-long Arts
Camp which features drama, art.
cooking, creative games, crafts and
special theme days. Or. they can be

and participate in a week-long
Sports Camp, featuring such team
events as indoor soccer. floor hock-
ey, basketball. as well as other
games and special theme days. A
daily swim is available at both
camps. The first is held at the
Pickering Recreation Complex,
Vallev Farm Rd., while the second
is held at Dunbarton High School,
655 Sheppard Ave. E.
Each camp runs from Monday,
March 6 to Friday. March 10 and
again from Monday. March 13 to
Friday. March 17. The cost is S86
for the "regular" camp, which runs
from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and
includes transportation, with pick-up
points at major intersections,
chrrchm schools and plazas.
The full-day program, which fea-
tures camp programs at the recre-
ation complex from 7 to 9 am. and

Durham asks towns to stop
collecting grass clippings

want communities
to push composting
DURHAM — The Region does-
n't want municipalities to pick up
grass clippings with their regular
leaf and yard waste collections.
But, Durham Region will contin-
ue to accept grass at its composting
facility in north Whitby if munici-
palities continue to collect grass
clippings.
The Region would prefer com-
munities promote the 'grasscy-
cling' program, in which clippings
are either left on the lawn to
decompose or placed in a house-
hold composter.
Durham began the grasscycling
program last year.
Regional council agreed
Wednesday to ask municipalities
not to collect grass but decided to
continue to accept deposits if they
do.

The Monarchs took the first game
over the Denis O'Connor Catholic
High School Chargers in the best -
of -three semi-final series 3-0 at the
Ajax Community Centre arena
Wednesday afternoon.
As in previous efforts this season,
St. Mary relied on flawless team
defence, limiting DO'C to only 12
shots in the game.
Goaltenders Kelly Roberts and
Lanny Hui shared the shutout.
Darren Farmer, Rick Macina and
Matt Sliwowicz scored for St. Mary.

AJAX-PICKERING — Annandale
Curling Club's bantam mixed rink
came agonizingly close to earning a
berth in the Ontario Winter Games in
Niagara Falls later this month.
However, it was not to be for the
bantam -age (up to 16) team skipped
by Matt Broga with Michelle Klepadlo
at vice, Andrew Roegele at second and
Tracee Nemeth at lead.
At the Southern Ontario finals at the
South Muskoka Curling Club last
weekend, the Annandale foursome
competed against seven other rinks
and compiled a record of four wins
and three losses in round-robin play.
That mark was good enough to give
the local team a second -place tie with
foursomes from Dixie and Bradford.
A rink from the Ottawa Granite Club
took top spot.
Since only three teams advance to
the Winter Games, a tie-breaker was
necessary. Bradford earned a spot in
the Games by virtue of its wins over
Dixie and Annandale in round-robin
play. This left Dixie and Annandale to
do battle in a one -game playoff with
the winner earning the third and final
spot at the Winter Games. The contest
ended 6-4 for Dixie.
The Annandale bantam team was
coached by Paul Bourque who also
accompanied the rink to the zone,

PICKERING — The seventh
annual Bay Ridges Hockey
Tournament will take to the ice next
month to raise funds for a worthy
cause.
Formerly the Kevin Shore
Memorial Hockey Tournament, the
event needs players age 23 and up
for the teams competing at Don Beer
Arena April 21 and 22.
A pre -tournament auction is set for
Dakota Bob's (formerly McGinnis
Landing) in the Pickering Home and
Design Centre (Hwy. 401 and Brock
Road) on Thursday, April 6.
The draft night for players is also
scheduled for Dakota Bob's on
Wednesday, April 12.
Entry forms are available at
Dakota Bob's, Mud Hen's (Hwy. 2
west of Liverpool Road) and Papp's
(Ilwy. 2 and Brock Road).
Proceeds from the tournament will
go to the Ajax -Pickering Women's
Centre Inc. to help fund a crisis
shelter and resource centre.

DURHAM - Durham Regional
Police want local residents to take a
stand against hate crime.
"It's out-and-out hatred," says
Detective John McLean of a stream of
racist leaflets that have been littering
neighborhoods across the region since
last summer. "A lot of people figure it's
just down in the States or in Toronto.
But it's right here in Durham Region."
The Street Crime Unit presented citi-
zens with the hard-hitting facts on hate
crime and youth violence in the region
at Durham College recently as part of
the police service's community educa-
tion series called, Get to Know Your
Police Service. "Hate crime is a serious
criminal offence," Constable Krish
Ganeshan told participants, and
explained that it is a crime committed
against a person, a group of people or
property that is based on race, religion,
nationality, ethnic origin, sexual orienta-
tion, gender or disability. Police have
been trying to combat the flood of hate
literature infiltrating communities.
However, it can only be stopped if they
see the culprits delivering the messages.
Leaflets sounding messages like
"Save the Land, Join the Klan" and
"White Warriors" and "Race Mixers Be
Warned" have been found throughout
the region, predominantly in the
Oshawa area.
"If you see someone putting these
leaflets on cars — get a good descrip-
tion of them and if you see them get into
a car, take down the licence plate num-
ber," Det. McLean said.
Const. Keith Mondesire added,
-People see this stuff and they find it
very offensive. Because it's so new,
there hasn't been a charge laid yet for
distribution."
The problem is that whoever is dis-
tributing the literature is dropping the
material off by the hundreds in the mid-
dle of the night. Police believe the
leaflets are being distributed randomly.
However, there have been some inci-
dents where specific people have been
targetted on a street.
Det. McLean said that many of the
white supremist groups actively recruit
young people, and added the leader of
the Heritage Front has been seen at
Dunbarwa High Sdool trying to roauh
students there.
Workshop ptnticipvnts viewed a film
on hate which showed, in one segment,
a toddler who was dressed in Klan attire
at a cross burning. In a slide pmsenta-
tion, citizens were shown the various
symbols of white supremist groups to
be able to mwguiae them in the com-
munity such as WAR (White Aryan
Resistance), NF (National Fronts HF
(Heritage Front), KKK (Ku Klux Klan
the Nazi swastika symbol as well as
symbols for Heil Hitler and Skinheads.
"(Being a victim of hate crime) can
happen to anyone," said Sergeant Bill
Temple, who co-ordinates the education
series for the public.
He told participants that if the com-
munity doesn't start to take a stand now,
the drive-by shootings we hear about in
the States may become a reality here.
Det. McLean left participants with
one final thought. "Hate is taught.
We're not born with hatred — it's
learned.
