Soon, they'll be sharing the stage with the one-time teen idol. The Young Singers of Ajax was one of four choirs to be chosen to appear in the upcoming Toronto production of Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat after an audition at Toronto's Pantages Theatre Tuesday. Ten choirs competed for four spots in the professional theatre production, with the 23 -member youth choir from Ajax earning the opportunity to sing in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical starring Osmond. A choral group from Oshawa also made the grade to appear in the production at the O'Keefe Centre. "We were very proud," says Ajax choir director Anna Lynn Murphy. "The children worked very bard on polishing their perfor- mance and learning new music." Mr. Harris pledged to immediately scrap the Interim Waste Authority (IWA) and consider alternatives to opening new dumps in the Toronto area such as incineration and hauling garbage by rail to landfills in northern Ontario or the United States. Mr. Harris drew applause from the 75 people attending when he said. "No municipality or region would be forced to accept waste from another municipal- ity. H o w e v e r, Pickering councillor Rick Johnson drew Mike Harris catcalls from his regional council col- leagues Wednesday when he said Mr. Harris would return garbage to the municipalities. In Durham, municipalities collect the garbage, but the Region is responsible for disposing of it. "I don't see too many happy hosts," regional chairman Gary Herrema said. Regional works committee chairman John Aker said, "I have a seven -word solution. Ship it south or ship it north." Mr. Harris said his party's waste management platform would -undo the damage of a flawed and politically - motivated pmcess " The IWA process of finding three landfill sites — including one in Pickering called E -11— has cost about $85 million so far and it could carry a price tag of $100 million before the next provincial election is called later this year, Mr. Harris said. When questioned on how his party could stop a process that's cost so much money, he said, "It's unfortunate $100 million will be wasted, but the system is flawed. I regret, and you're right it's a waste of $85 million, but we would have to write it off and move on. Massage parlor workers busted PICKERING — An undercover sting operation has resulted in prostitution - related charges against three area residents. Durham Regional Police say undercover officers were offered sexual favors in exchange for money at the Rouge Valley Therapy Centre Inc. A woman police officer posing as a job seeker was offered employment at the parlor, which performs tber- apeutic massages. Some customers were also offered sexual acts for money, according to Detective Sergeant Tom Cameron. "It was being operated as a bawdy house where sexual favors could be received for money,- Det. SgL Cameron says. "Our investigation involved undercover police officers who posed as cus- tomers and were offered sexual acts for money and an undercover police woman who posed as a job seeker.- As eeker "As a result of the investi- gation, police executed a search warrant at the mas- sage parlor and arrested three women on Monday night, according to police. A fourth woman is being sought by police. A 37 -year-old Ajax woman was charged with attempting to procure for the purposes of prostitution and keeping a common bawdy house. A 52 -year-old Ajacian and a 42 -year-old Pickering resident were charged with being inmates of a bawdy house. The accused have been released and will appear in Oshawa provincial court in April - Det. Sgt. Cameron says the business where the arrests were made is still in operation. The place is still operat- ing as a massage parlor. There is a registered mas- sage therapist employed there who is not charged. They can operate the mas- sage parlor legally provided they're giving therapeutic massages. It's the sexual acts which are illegal." Police were acting on a complaint from a Pickering man who was a customer at the massage parlor. Regional council Wednesday approved volun- tary Direct Bank Deposit (DBD) for wel- fare recipients getting monthly cheques. The new system should be in place by the end of 1995. "We're trying to be fair to our ratepayers. The public board will hold its next budget meeting at its Dew administration centre on Taunton Road in Whitby on March 23, when further cuts are expected. Meanwhile, the separate school board is inviting mem- bers of the public to its first mating, which will be held at the Catholic education centre in Oshawa. Albert Oegema, 29, was found guilty of robbery, two courts of possession of dan- gerous weapons and threatening death. Defence counsel Rachel Grinberg said a sentence of two to three years was appropn- years old when he and two others were involved in a murder in Pembroke on May 15, 1982. According to Ms. Grinberg, Mr. Oegema admitted to his involvement in the murder, while the others went to trial. She added he was drunk at the time of the offence and did Wildlife area memorial to slain gun store owner O Wetland a tribute to Roger Pardy, killed by gunmen who murdered Pickering's Ken Thomas By BRAD REAUME DURHAM STAFF DURHAM — Conservation group Ducks Unlimited will dedicate a site this spring as the Roger Pandy Memorial Wetland in mem- ory of an Oshawa gun shop co-owner killed by robbers who murdered a Pickering man whose vehicle they used as a getaway car. The group has been rehabilitating the property, which is only the second site devel- oped by Ducks Unlimited to be dedicated m a person's memory. Mr. Pandy, wbo was instrumental in the organization of the kcal chapter of Ducks Unlimited, was murdered Sept. 14, 1994 during a robbery at Gagnon Sports on Simcoe Street South in Oshawa. He was shot by gunmen who abducted and killed 55 - year -old Pickering resident Ken Thomas, whose vehide w4s found the next day not far from the crime scene. The organiraaon has national chapters in United States, Mexico, New Zealand and Canada They sponsor numerous redevelop- ment projects each year. The local chapter of Dudes Unlimited ini- tiated the memorial, according to chapter member Ted Rivett. The only other Ducks Unlimited site bear- ing a person's name is dedicated to a past president of the inianational organization, headquartered in Winnipeg. The site is between Hwy. 12 and Durham Regional Road 2, north of Port Perry in the Township of Scugog, adjacent to the Nonquon Riva. Two segments have been reworked into new wetlands while one arra, already a wetland, was simply enhanced. A further area was rettaned to wetland condition with pmdatar- poof nesting boxes, baskets and cylinders installed and another area was restored to a dry nesting ground. A river, ponds and wet- lands will allow all types of wildlife to thrive. Lane to invoke a Criminal Code provision which would ensure Mr. Oegema would serve at least half of his sentence before being eligi- ble for parole. Defence counsel objected, saying he was paroled from a life sentence and the parole board would automatically reconvene regarding his eligibility. Justice Lane denied the Crown's motion. "I don't think you intended to rob the establishment. The temptation was there and you took it," Justice Lane told Mr. Oegema. "It was a violent assault and you threatened death, which must be taken more seriously with your record. "I'm prepared to accept that when you're not drinking you are a good member of society and have something to contribute. However, this sentence must consider sev- eral elements: deterrence (because) the other sentence didn't deter you: and the number of violent robberies in this jurisdic- tion which have resulted in death, character of the convict: and the of the offence." But, for the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board, there's a lose -lose potential when it tables its own budgetary num- bers. The Catholic board is faced with this fiscal dilemma: If it tables a budget containing a tax increase greater than that of the public school board, it risks a flight of its separate school sup- porters. To the separate board's credit, it's on record as stating officials are fully cognizant that Durham Region ratepayers have hit the `tax wall' and will refuse to pay more. That practical realization must provide the motivation for rational and reasonable cuts to budgetary excesses. However, we caution that trustees shouldn't slash away for the sake of meeting arbitrary targets. The separate board has a smaller pool of tax- payers to draw from, making its job infinitely more difficult. But, there's room for movement when a clear and focused eye is drawn to the numbers. And, the budgetary process mustn't interfere with the quality of education students in Durham Region's Catholic schools are receiv- ing. Indeed, the separate school board has a daunt- ing task ahead. Taxpayers have made it clear prudent fiscal policies, combined with value for the money, are what they demand. The public board has succeeded so far in chopping $5 million from its budget, setting the stage for similar actions in the separate system. Taxpayers, meanwhile, await your next move. But winning the prestigious Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology and Mathematics in reeognkion of her work is icing on the cake. "It's gratifying to be recognized by your peers," says Ms. Sarparyk, who was nomunted for the award by a professor at the University of Toronto, where she serves as a part- time assistant instructor when she's not performing her duties as bead of the science deportment at Pickering High School in Ajax. "I was surprised and shocked," the 40 -year-old Ajax resident says of winning one of 87 Prime Minister's awards given to reacting professionals across the country. But Ms. Stuparyk readily admits her gtratesI satisfaction comes from Learn to swim acting as a role model for her female students who want to pursue a career in science and technology, two fields which historically have been dominated by men. "Encouraging female participa- tion in science and technology is something I've been working for through my entire career,,. says Ms. Stuparyk, who, at age 26, became the first female bead of science at the Durham Board of Education. "But we're teaching science for everyone. We have to teach a pro- gram that's meeting the needs of everyone," she adds. To that end, Ms. Stuparyk says high school science programs are placing more emphasis on teaching practical knowledge which sandents can apply to everydaylife. This years festival features 12 one - act Plays, presented by acting troupes from 10 Durham high schools. The festival also includes daytime drama workshops - The four plays performed Tuesday evening were a great start to the festi- val. First was a faatasy of a meeting of six of Shakespeare's heroines. When Shakespeare's Ladies Meet had Juliet, Portia. Desdemona, Cleopatra, Ophelia and Katherine in frank dis- cussions largely about the men m their lives, in a mixture of Shakespearean phrases and mod- em language. The players, from Brock High School in Cannington, gave elegant performances, assist- ed by equally elegant costumes, and set pieces. Next, from Port Perry High School, was a good performance of Impromptu, in which four players explore the often vague boundary between "real life" and theatre. JLq The third play was Merging, written and performed by 17 students from O'Neill Collegiate and vocational Institute in Oshawa. The Durham West Girls ockey Association is wcasing its talent during the DWGHA 1995 Inaugural Tournament, which kicked off at the Ajax Community Centre and Pickering Village arenas Thursday night. The event features 62 teams play- ing in 11 divisions from tykes (aged five to seven) right up to the ladies' catego- ry (19 and older) through to Sunday night_ The tournament is the crowning achievement in the short history of the DWGHA which provides female hock- ey for youths and adults in Ajax and Pickering. "It's definitely the high- light of our season," says Art Carefoote, president of the DWGHA. "We look forward to putting on a first-class tournament and we're look- ing to have it turn into an annual event. We hope it gets bigger and bigger every yew. ,. Durham West will be well represented at the tourney with the association icing teams in eight of the I1 age categories at the event. Carefoote says the Durham West Lightning squads have a chance to take as many as four or five titles in their respective divisions. "We're hoping to be com- petitive in all divisions. We've played a lot of these same teams and, head-to- head, we've done quite well against them. But, anything can happen at a tournament," says Carefoote. Girls' hockey has been a growing part of the local sports scene since it was fust introduced to Ajax and Pickering in 1993-94. Prior to that, girls who wanted to play hockey travelled to Scarborough. "We've had an over- whelming response to girls' hockey in this area " he says. "Ibe growth of girls' hock- ey, not only in Ajax and Pickering. but in Ontario has been enormcous " He notes that the world championship for women's hockey will be played in Kitcbe-ner next year. One of the highlights of the DWGHA tourney is a game between the NHL Oldtimers and the DWGHA senior ladies' team. The contest is at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Among those in the Oldtimers line-up are Bobby Lalonde, Pete Conacher, Bill Hassard, Ivan Irwin, Howie Manard and former Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Brian McFarlane. Carefoote notes it's the fust time the NJ Q_ Oldtimers have ever played a women's team. "They don't know quite what to expect. The women have commented 'well, they've never been beaten by a women's team before either'." The tournament continues today, Friday, and Saturday, with games at the Pickering Recreation Complex and Don Beer Arena. Playoff action begins on Sunday at 11:15 am. at the recreation complex. Shelley Carter, 16, blasted her way to a silver medal for Ontario in the women's pairs air rifle competition at the Games. Carter and partner Kim Sullivan of Stoney Creek posted a combined score of 730 in the target shooting event. Eariier, Carter placed fifth in the mdi- vidual women's air rifle event, with a score of 362. Carter was surprised to win a medal at the Games in her fust appearance at the high-level competition which Shelley Carter brings together the best women target shoxxers in the country. The Ontario New Home Warrantv Program encourages new homeowners to use this booklet as a source of practical information during the entire home buying process and after move -in day as a handy reference on maintaining a new home and its warranty. The 47 -page booklet was recently revised and enhanced to include a pre -delivery inspection checklist, specific advice to lawyers, mortgage lenders and real estate professionals and updated information about some of the new technologies used in today's home such as your new home's ventilation system. Several pages in the booklet explain what's covered by ONHWP's warranty and what's not. In this section new homeowners will discover ONHWP effectively safeguards new home buyers against many problems including deposit loss, delayed closing, major structural defects, Ontario Building Code violations and construction defects. Since it was created in 1976 by Ontario's home builders, ONHWP has provided comprehensive warranty protection to more than 730,000 new home and condominium units in the province. The ONHWP warranty coverage takes effect from the date of possession and remains in effect if the house or condominium unit is sold before the end of the warranty period. Hence, the warranty remains with the house not the owner. Your relationship with ONHWP begins the moment you sign your Agreement of Purchase and Sale. One of ONHWP's most important mandates is to ensure new homeowners receive the warranty protection they arc entitled to under the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act - The ONHWP suggests new home buyers can prevent many headaches if they acquaint themselves with the program prior to buying a home or condominium unit. A little home buyer homework would reveal the importance of selecting a reputable builder who abides by provincial law and registers with ONHWR What Every New Home Buyer Should Know alerts new home buyers to a small sector of rogue builders who try to side step registration with ONHWP and enrollment of each new home thev build for sale. These builders are often investigatcd and prosecuted by ONHWP's Enforcement Group, ultimately facing fines of up to $100,(X)0. Fortunately, new homes built by an unregistered builder are still protected by ONHWP. But new homeowners would miss out on all warranty mailings and the peace of mind during one of life's largest purchases. Should problems arise in a new home, homeowners can consult What Every New Home Buyer Should Know. In its annual National Housing Outlook. the CMHC forecasts housing starts at 141.000 units for 1995 — a drop of 8.5 per cent over 1994. The association expects the construction industry to rebound by 6.6 per cent in 1996, to a total of 150,300 units. Construction of single - detached units will see a relatively small decline this year with a more significant fecovcry next year," says Gilles Proulx. chief economist at the CMHC's !Market Analysis Centre. "Multiples construction, on the other hand, will drop more this year and recover slightly in 1996." Proulx says construction levels reflect a downward adjustment from the construction boom in British Columbia and the new international immigration targets. He'adds that rising mortgage rates in the latter part of 1994 contributed to the slowing of activity. "Rates are now expected to be close to their peak and ease gradually in the second half of the year," says Proulx. Over the forecast period, Ontario and Quebec housing markets are expected to remain near their 1994 levels in 1995 and show some improvement in 1996. British Columbia will see lower construction throughout the forecast period, while Prairie and Atlantic regions will drop slightly in 1995 and show offsetting advances in 1996.
